There's no question that suicide has become an epidemic in our country and world today. Suicide is now the second leading cause of death among people aged 15–24 in the U.S., and according to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, nearly 20% of high school students report serious thoughts of suicide with 9% having made an attempt to end their lives. Beyond that, there's a significant concern for our girls and our daughters as the CDC recently reported that 57% of our girls reported signs of persistent sadness and depression, with 30% of our girls reporting seriously considering and contemplating suicide. This is alarming and is a fight that we must all stand up and fight against through creating environments of safety and vulnerability for people so they understand they do not have to suffer in silence. Thankfully today, we have a very special guest who has a personal testimony around the topic of suicide as she is a suicide attempt survivor and now renowned mental health and suicide prevention advocate, Emma Benoit. In this conversation Emma helps expose many of the pressures and stressors facing today's generations, but she also provides us with hope, encouragement, and strategies that we can begin implementing within our homes, friendships, and workplaces to work against the suicide epidemic. One thing we know is that just because someone carries it well does not mean that it's not heavy. Together, we can remind people that they were made for so much more! Emma's Website: https://www.myascension.us/emma-speaksMyAscension Documentary: https://www.myascension.us/

Welcome to the Love Where You Are podcast!  In today's episode I am joined with Emma Benoit. Today's conversation is not easy but it isn't something we can ignore, it is all around us and our teens: suicide. Why is this happening to our kids? How do we stop it? What are the warning signs? Emma speaks on this topic as a teen suicide survivor with an incredible story of God healing her from the inside out.                                                                     Emma shares the factors surrounding the suicide attempt, how she was saved, physically and spiritually, and encourages us to break down the stigma of mental health, what people think it is and how damaging this stigma was to her. We need to be equipped with these tools from Emma. Let's begin the conversations with our kids, to know what they're going through, how we can help, and remind them they are loved and have a life worth living.  Thank you for being here today. Did you know that 20 young people take their own lives every single day in the United States?Catherine recently sat down with one such teen for a two-part series on suicide. Emma Benoit had a picture-perfect life. She was a vibrant, beautiful 16-year-old varsity cheerleader whose secret battle with anxiety led her to take a gun, point it at her chest, and pull the trigger. Only 1% of people with self-inflicted gunshot wounds survive. Emma is in that 1%. She is an absolute miracle and an inspiration.Joining Catherine and Emma for this vital conversation is Jennifer Ellers, a Christian counselor, crisis responder, and trainer. Jennifer has authored a course on youth suicide and is an instructor of the American Association of Christian Counselor's Hope-Focused 3-R Suicide Program. In Episode 49, part one of this series, Jennifer discussed the explosion of suicides occurring in very young children and shared the signs we should look for in kids under the age of twelve as Emma shared her journey leading up to the day that she attempted to end her life. This episode, part two of that interview, picks up just after Emma pulled the trigger. It focuses on the spiritual, mental, and physical aspects of suicide, the signs we should look for in older children, specific steps we can take to prevent suicide, and Emma's recovery.According to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, a 2019 study revealed that 8.9% of youth in grades 9-12 reported that they had made at least one suicide attempt in the past twelve months. I was so blessed to interview Emma Benoit. You are going to be so touched by this 22-year-olds courageous story. I was struck by her wisdom, honesty, and vulnerability. Emma has such an important message for moms and for someone out there listening this episode could save your teens life. Emma Benoit became extremely passionate about suicide prevention after surviving a suicide attempt in 2017, the summer before her senior year in high school. At the time, she was a popular varsity cheerleader with a supportive family and lots of friends, but on the inside, she was filled with depression and anxiety, and had never told a soul about it. Her attempt resulted in a spinal cord injury that left her paralyzed but helped her find faith and purpose; and propelled her on a mission to use her painful experience and miraculous recovery to help others. A few months after her attempt, Emma started the website liferejuvenated.org and a blog to share her story and recovery journey, in an effort to help other teens who are struggling. In early 2018, Emma began working on a documentary film called My Ascension, which was released in 2021, that chronicles her recovery journey and advocacy work, while addressing the youth suicide epidemic. If you are struggling with thoughts of suicide please call the Canadian Suicide Prevention line at 1-833-456-4566. You can also go online to get help, at https://talksuicide.ca/ A few months after her attempt, Emma started the website liferejuvenated.org and a blog to share her story and recovery journey, in an effort to help other teens who are struggling. In early 2018, Emma began working on a documentary film called My Ascension, which is scheduled for release in 2021, that chronicles her recovery journey and advocacy work, while addressing the youth suicide epidemic. Emma serves as an Ambassador for LivingWorks, the world's leader in suicide prevention training and in December of 2020, Emma was a featured guest on Jada Pinkett Smith's hit show “Red Table Talk”; and she has also been featured on numerous other news programs and podcasts. Emma is an uplifting speaker who has shared her powerful story and message with thousands of people at in person and virtual conferences and events including: LivingWorks and California Department of Education Youth Summit, National Federation of Families for Children's Mental Health Conference, LSU School of Social Work Conference, Arkansas Youth Mental Health Conference, Hope Rising Suicide Prevention Summit and the Hope Squad National Conference.
