This week, we share a clip from the latest episode of the Courage My Friends podcast series.  In this episode, host Resh Budhu sat down with author and storyteller Carolyn Roberts, dean of the Centre for Preparatory and Liberal Studies at George Brown College, Susan Toews, and director of Student Well-Being and Support at George Brown College, Alex Irwin to discuss this year's upcoming Mental Health Conference. This year's conference theme is Thriving Together in the Classroom: Creating the Conditions for Student Well-Being.  About our guests Carolyn Roberts uses her voice to support Indigenous resurgence through education. She is a St'at'imc and Sto:lo woman belonging to the Thevarge family from N'quatqua Nation and the Kelly Family from the Tzeachten Nation and under the Indian Act she is a member of the Squamish Nation. Carolyn is a speaker, author, Indigenous academic, and a faculty member in UBC Teacher Education and NITEP programs. She has been an educator and administrator for over 20 years in the K-12 system. Carolyn's work is grounded in educating about Indigenous people and the decolonization of the education system. She works with pre-service teachers to help build their understandings in Indigenous history, education, and ancestral ways of knowing, to create a brighter future for all Indigenous people and the seven generations yet to come. She is also the author of Re-Storying Education: Decolonizing Your Practice Using a Critical Lens (2024).  Alex Irwin is an accomplished educator with broad experience managing people and projects and developing innovative education programming for a wide range of students, both domestically and overseas. He is director of Student Well-Being and Support at George Brown College, where he oversees counselling, accessible learning services, deaf and hard of hearing services, and the college's peer wellness programming. He is also a clinical social worker, with a history of working at community-based mental health and treatment centres. Susan Toews has over 35 years of experience in education, with the last 18 years of her career at George Brown College, where she has served in leadership positions in both academic roles and service areas. She is currently the Dean, Centre for Preparatory and Liberal Studies. Susan is a strong advocate for a whole campus/whole student approach to student mental health and believes in the wide application of Universal Design for Learning, as it provides guidance for creating accessible, inclusive and engaging student-centered learning opportunities – critical to student well-being. In episode 4, we focus on the upcoming 25th annual Mental Health Conference at George Brown College in Toronto and this year's theme, Thriving Together in the Classroom: Creating the Conditions for Student Well-Being.  Author, storyteller, Indigenous academic and conference keynote speaker Carolyn Roberts; dean of the Centre for Preparatory and Liberal Studies, Susan Toews; and director of Student Well-Being and Support, Alex Irwin discuss this year's conference and its focus on teaching, the mental health and well-being of post-secondary students, decolonizing learning and Indigenous resurgence through education. Reflecting on the need for decolonizing and re-storying education, Roberts says: “When Indigenous students step into the classroom, we are being asked to leave a part of who we are at the door, because that's not talked about or shared within those spaces. So we have to leave our indigeneity at the door to come in to learn about something else. And that's not a sustainable thing. And not only for Indigenous students, but for all non white students that are walking into these spaces … We need to make sure that we're having multiple stories from multiple perspectives in our classrooms, so that all of our students can see a piece of them within the work that they're doing.” For online registration, conference fees and information about the February 27, 2025 conference, please click this link.  About today's guests:  Carolyn Roberts uses her voice to support Indigenous resurgence through education. From the 2025 Asian American Mental Health Conference "Navigating Transitions with Faith and Resilience: Asian American Mental Health Across Life Stages." This lecture is by Sangeetha Thomas, titled "Liminality and Relational Wholeness in a Fallen World," recorded January 17, 2025. Find out more about the conference here: https://ptsem.edu/academics/centers/center-for-asian-american-christianity/2025-mental-health-conference/ Abstract: Social disconnection and isolation have become increasingly prevalent in the United States. For Asian Americans, these experiences exist within a larger context of migration, racialization and intergenerational trauma. In addition, life transitions, such as career decisions, marriage and health-related challenges could introduce disagreements and conflicts that exacerbate disconnection and alienation. Focusing on themes of Holy Saturday, this talk focuses on spiritual formation as it occurs in these “spaces in between.” Drawing on psychological research and theory on attachment, this session focuses on the dynamic interplay between interpersonal relationships and spiritual growth as we navigate liminal spaces. Find out more about the conference here: https://caac.ptsem.edu/events/2024-mental-health-conference Abstract: What is good about Asian parenting styles? What needs redeeming by Christ? If Asian parents are too demanding, are White families too permissive? What are some important Scriptures to consider? We will talk about telling stories and giving verbal affirmation vs. silence; educating kids as missionaries vs. as capitalist competitors; and motivating kids through persevering joy and intrinsic virtues vs. needing to be better or best. We will also share stories of how our children, raised in Christian community and with a love for creation and justice, challenged their non-Christian grandparents about “success”: personal success is inseparable from community and global flourishing, because climate change makes clear that separating them was a mistake. We will also address how we as parents have handled disappointment as our kids go through faith and character struggles. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/ptscaac/message

Find out more about the conference here: https://caac.ptsem.edu/events/2024-mental-health-conference/ Abstract: In my experience and from what I've seen in others, learning how to personally follow Jesus in tangible and real ways is often the first phase of discipleship. Learning how to live in Christian community, whether that be through marriage or intentional community, is a common second phase of discipleship. And for those of us called to be parents, whether of our own biological children or through foster care or adoption, parenting is the fertile field of opportunity for discipleship 3.0. In other words, it is really hard!! Nothing has driven me to the need for deeper personal healing than becoming a parent. I'd love to share my story with you of how my husband and I have tried to cooperate with the Lord and the ways he has used parenting and specifically, decisions about where to send our kids for school in South Los Angeles, to push us to go deeper and further in our faith. It's one thing to have chosen for ourselves that the call of Jesus and the upside kingdom are the path to life and abundant joy. It's another thing to make that choice again for our children. One additional note: my husband is African American, so inherent in my story are race and the blessings and challenges of cross-cultural dynamics. I'll weave those themes into my workshop as well. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/ptscaac/message

The conference is open to medical and mental health professionals, as well as passionate individuals interested in mental health transformation. This episode offers a preview of cutting-edge perspectives on mental health, including cognitive decline. When you listen, you'll learn about: Kirkland's vision to integrate functional medicine into mainstream mental health practices. The epidemic of mental health issues, especially among young people, is a concern, and conventional medical practices seem ill-equipped to address the problem. An introduction to some IMMH speakers, including Dr. Daniel Amen, who focuses on brain health rather than mental health; Dr. Robert Lustig, who discusses technology addiction and the impact of the amygdala on mental health; Dr. Georgia Ede, Dr. Dale Bredesen, and more.  The gut-brain connection, trauma's impact on biochemistry and the gut, and the importance of safe connection and social engagement in healing are also highlighted in the conversation. This workshop questions the compatibility of Christian faith with these material pursuits, concentrating on four areas Asian American Christians have not generally treated as matters for discipleship: academic achievement, wealth and poverty, residential location, and race. Each of these areas raises potential tensions between Christian discipleship and the desire to honor family sacrifices. By investigating these areas, this workshop encourages Asian American Christians to expand their conception of discipleship from individual faithfulness to faithful engagement with their social and political contexts. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/ptscaac/message

Wondering what PMDD is after reading the title? You're likely in good company. Although Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD) affects between 3 and 4 million women in the US, it is still a relatively unknown disorder that is often misdiagnosed. To help us understand what PMDD is and how it impacts women and their families, Marybeth Bohn joins Robin for this important episode. Marybeth's daughter, Christina, battled PMDD for more than a decade before Marybeth helped lead doctors to her diagnosis. This episode gives listeners a front-row seat to a young woman's struggle and a mother's worst nightmare.  Special Guest:Marybeth Bohn has been advocating for PMDD (Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder) since she lost her daughter, Christina Elizabeth Bohn, to suicide in 2021 due to the disorder. The thought of others suffering as her daughter did for 10 to 15 years before receiving a correct diagnosis motivates Marybeth to keep speaking out. She speaks publicly about PMDD to increase awareness and to reduce the time in getting an accurate diagnosis. She has spoken at the University of Missouri, Postpartum Support International Climb Out of the Darkness Walk, Missouri House of Representatives Committee on Healthcare Reform, Women's Mental Health Conference at Yale, NIH Prevention in Focus Webinar, and many other venues. In 2023, she worked with the Missouri State Legislature to pass a bill for having an annual PMDD Awareness Day on October 2nd, which is Christina's birthday. Missouri is the first state in the U.S. to officially have a PMDD Awareness Day.Marybeth serves as vice president of the Board of Directors for the International Association for Premenstrual Disorders (IAPMD) and has actively served as a PMDD Champion. After Christina's death, Marybeth retired from the University of Missouri to focus on increasing awareness of PMDD. To learn more about PMDD, go to the presentation Marybeth mentions in the show:https://www.prevention.nih.gov/education-training/prevention-focus-webinars/it-more-pms-learn-about-pmdd

In this moving and important extract from child and adolescent psychiatrist Dr. Greenblatt's presentation for the IMMH Integrative Medicine for Mental Health Conference 2023, Dr. Greenblatt, a pioneer in the field of integrative and functional medicine psychiatry with over 35 years of clinical experience, gives us the hard truth around the staggering statistics and crisis in adolescent mental health, the failure of current treatment models and the importance of taking an integrative and functional medicine approach which diagnose and treat the root cause and the individual biochemistry of patients to bring about sustainable healing. In this extract from IMMH 2023, he delves into the critical role of nutritional lithium in mental health, particularly focusing on the concept of lithium deficiency syndrome in children and adolescents, making a compelling argument about how low-dose lithium, a simple but often overlooked micronutrient, is essential for brain health and can significantly influence behaviours related to ADHD, autism, irritability, bipolar disorder, and aggression. In this presentation learn about: - The failure of current mental health treatment and the epidemic of mental health issues and suicidality in children and adolescents; - The correlation between aggression against self (suicide) and others (violent criminals) and low lithium levels; - Lithium as the anti-impulsive nutrient for ADHD, bipolar, aggression and road rage; - Lithium and other nutritional supplements as part of a more effective and sustainable treatment alongside, or even instead of conventional psychiatric treatments, allowing for the reduction of psychiatric medication such as antipsychotics, mood stabilisers and tranquillisers; - The clinical and research-based evidence supporting the use of low-dose lithium in treating and possibly preventing a range of psychiatric disorders such as autism, suicidality, irritability, bipolar 2, disruptive mood dysregulation disorder, aggression, etc.; - Low dose micronutrient lithium and lithium carbonate both as anti-suicidality molecule according to 50 years of research; - The relationship between elemental lithium and lithium carbonate (used in conventional bipolar treatment); - Understanding functional Lithium Deficiency Syndrome due to genetics (which can be tested) and nutritional status; - Understanding who will be the most responsive to lithium supplementation, and how to test for lithium deficiency including hair mineral analysis, symptoms and family history; - Lithium's effect on neurotransmitters including decreasing glutamate and dopamine which are excitatory, and increasing serotonin and gaba, which are inhibitory; - Lithium's positive effects on inflammation, oxidative stress, and microglial activation ; - Best doses for nutritional lithium, side effects and best sources; - The effects of lithium on neurodegeneration and its role in dementia care. Find out more about the conference here: https://caac.ptsem.edu/events/2024-mental-health-conference/. Abstract: When we are part of families with a recent legacy of migration, we understand the desire to “forget what is behind” and “press toward the future.” In our desire to focus on the hopeful things ahead, we can often reject anything bad (past trauma, pain, grief, loss, shame, etc). In this plenary talk, we open-heartedly explore what it might look like to take an honest look at the “both-and”: the narratives of resilience, strength, and success alongside our family narratives of trauma, grief, and loss. How can we, in community, honor and own the fullness of our Asian American identities and legacies? Is it possible that in moving in the direction of courageously sitting with uncomfortable and dishonored histories that we can find freedom together to live life to the full? --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/ptscaac/message

As a society we've been able to shed some of the stigma surrounding mental health and wellness in our communities. But that work is far from over. There are men and women who work as emergency responders who may be struggling who also may not be comfortable talking about it with friends and family. And managing the work-related trauma in their lives can be a daunting task. There's a group working to ensure first responders and their families have the support they need to understand, navigate and manage the potential for that trauma and it's impact. The First Responders Steering Committee is putting together a conference to provide a space to bring these workers and volunteers, along with their employers and managers, to network. They'll also be given a chance to hear from experts in the field of mental health and traumatic psychological injury. Mike Sears is a Captain with Halifax Regional Fire and Emergency. He is also involved with the steering committee working at putting on the conference that will happen in Halifax on September 13th and 14th. When Jonathan Gustin was around 12 years of age, he was enthralled by a 1970s’ television show that featured a blind Buddhist priest teaching a boy his age about enlightenment and duty.  “I would live for these scenes where the priest gave the boy spiritual instruction!” he recounts. That early fascination with enlightenment led him to meditation, and travels through China and India in search of a master. Then, at age 20, he found himself on a solo meditation retreat for three weeks in a log cabin in Northern Ontario, Canada – “alone in wild nature” with “no human company, no distractions, just wild nature and meditation practice.” During the self-retreat, between periods seeking transcendence through meditation, he slipped into another more worldly, but equally profound, contemplation: “What is my place in the world?” he asked. “All at once, an image arose, like the scratchings on an ancient wood block, I saw a scene of a person (me) supporting the birth of a person’s full self,” he later wrote. “The two words that arose alongside this image were, Whole-person midwifery.” Through decades of study and practice, Jonathan eventually learned how to become the image that was revealed to his 20-year-old self. He now is a purpose guide, psychotherapist, meditation teacher, and integral mentor in private practice in the San Francisco Bay Area for over 25 years, helping midwife the birth of a person's full self. He combines all three disciplines – meditation, psychotherapy, and purpose guiding – to support individuals seeking to answer the question that came to him in that Canadian log cabin: "what is mine to do in the world?" He helps navigate them in the journey toward wholeness through what he calls the “three worlds” of the human experience – the “upper world” of spirit seeking transcendence and enlightenment through practices such as meditation (“waking up”); the “middle world” of personality and ego seeking emotional healing through practices such as psychotherapy (“growing up”), and the “lower world” of soul seeking embodiment and offering gifts to others through soul work practices (“showing up”). He has been referred to by a luminary peer as a “rare example of a seasoned meditation teacher who understands the spiritual necessity of the descent to soul and sacred darkness — as well as the ascent to the light and the One. He guides his students in both directions, down as well as up.” Jonathan teaches that Purpose Guiding breaks the spell of our default purposes of safety, security, comfort and outward success, and orients us towards our true purpose, which is to embody our unique calling within. He passionately and skillfully invites his students to this contemporary Koan, “Where do I belong in the ecology of life?” – or, as Frederick Buechner famously wrote about life’s calling: “Where does my deep gladness and the world’s hunger meet?” Jonathan writes that finding our purpose is not a choice. It’s a discovery. We can co-create the expression of our purpose, which is where originality and joy happen, but the core of purpose is that we receive it. It is a spiritual revelation from the soul – not a stated desire of the ego – and arrived at largely by subtraction of all that is non-essential, not through formulation or addition of goals and desired impact. It is the “deepest conversation you can have with life,” he says. Jonathan is the founder and lead teacher of the Purpose Guides Institute and Green Sangha, and co-author of Purpose Rising: A Global Movement of Transformation and Meaning with Ken Wilber, Erwin Laszlo, Bill Plotkin  and others. He also serves as adjunct faculty at John F. Kennedy University in the Consciousness and Transformation Studies program. He has taught at the California Institute Of Integral Studies, Green Gulch Zen Center, Spirit Rock Meditation Center, Open Circle, Bay Area Integral, The Nondual Wisdom & Mental Health Conference, iEvolve, San Quentin State Penitentiary, Marina Counseling Center, and iRest Institute. Jonathan says, “When we all have the opportunity to live our calling, we can support our collective true purpose: to become co-creators of our species’ evolution. We may, thus, give birth to more beauty, truth and goodness into the world.” Join us in conversation with this teacher and guide!

We sat down with Ona from Black Pod Collective- a platform created to represent black podcasters. http://voyageatl.com/interview/meet-ona-oghogho-blk-pod-collective-downtown-atlanta/The girls recapped their lives since their last recording . Candy got to attend her first Friendsgiving. Hali planned and completed her first Mental Health Conference at CAU. Cidnee talked about her experience at Black Tech Week and speaking on a panel in Vegas. Ona talked about spending the rest of her year planning for 2020. Our guest helped us with the CareFreeBlackGirl of the week- Little Chole Harvard Debate team The girls take this time to talk about finding your voice and encouraging younger girls to do the same . A lot happened in black girl land this month and we’re just getting caught up. The big discussion on the table was Ari losing the Album of the Year to Lizzo for the soul train awards. The girls gave their opinions on how they felt the awards should of gone . Ona brought up a good point of how the industry is and the awards needing more categories. The politics of the award shows is the industry problem and not the artist in the running . The ladies briefly spoke about Grammy nominations and spoke who we’re most excited for. Cidnee was excited to see how many artist she has come across being nominated for Grammy’s . We’re waiting to see what the conversations will be like the night of. The girls talk Kash Doll’s new album - the girls love the singles not that full project. Our girl Megan didn’t get any nominations but she was still in the news this week with an alleged fling with Trey Songz. The girls almost gagged only to find out , it was just a friendly hang out . * side eye , we shall see. Hot Girl Meg got to hang out with our other homegirl Ciara and we saw both knees in action. We listened to Ciara’s latest track and decided that the effort is appreciated but we will not be playing Melanin. We briefly talk Future and other foolish men like his brother T.I. Ona and Candy got to listen to the podcast where T.I. spoke about attending his daughters OBGYN checkups. We won’t promo the podcast but the women did say they were a little uncomfortable with the conversation and later decided to delete the episode. After doing research the statement was very ignorant on T.I.’s part but a little corny for the girls to air the show . Candy talks about the embarrassment Dajaa must feel after the whole ordeal. We’re hoping she is ok from this and we’re hoping she can overcome any issues that rose from his statements. Hali also notes that a broken hymen does not mean that a woman is not a virgin. On a serious note Cidnee went to Tulsa Oklahoma and learned about Black Wall Street in the early 1900. A very wealthy place for black people with lost of prosperity, businesses and wealth. The KKK burned the whole block down after a while woman said someone stole something from them. The block was burned and it turned into a whole race war . In 2019 the location has been memorialized along with a museum with the families names and the amount of money they lost. The ladies challenge more black people to teach their children more history outside of what taught in the classroom. On another serious note we talk about Alexis Crawford who was killed by roommate and her roommates boyfriend. Crawford was raped by Jordyn’s boyfriend and reported it. Alexis went missing days after the report and was later found dead. Jordyns boyfriend confessed to the murder and told authorities that it was her idea. The group has been arrested and is being held without bond. We are praying for the Crawford family. Hali talks about the steps CAU is taking to help the students. Sex Trafficking is a big deal in the Atlanta area and across the US right now . We encourage our listeners to take precaution when traveling. There are groups of women getting people to sign up for a church , white vans and more . If you feel weird . Call for help.Get FreeThe girls talk Sticking to your diet during the holidays. Cidnee has been on her no meat diet since September and going strong. But she plans to get busy on thanksgiving. The group tells her not to jump back in so quit. Next we talk visiting your family during the holidays . Ona’s visited her boyfriend’s family who was Seventh Day Adventist and she spoke about how awkward it was giving them gifts and being left out of the loop. Cidnee said she never invites people over because she doesn’t want people to be uncomfortable. Hali let us know that her family is a safe space so she would really have to be into someone to invite them over , not a semester fling. Listeners - Do you think it’s important to meet the fam before getting serious with someone? Cidnee pulls from her work your light deck to give us some insight on what this season will bring Perfect timing - believe in perfect timing and letting things play out Emotional healing - taking time to reconnect and heal things that are in need Daughter and son card - means family , holiday season - this card focuses on emotional healing during this season The Akasha - gifts lessons and gifts exist here . In this episode, you’ll learn how Brainspotting allows for incredible breakthroughs to peace and peak performance for both athletes (specifically gymnasts) and first responders. For more information about Brainspotting, please see www.brainspotting.com. Brainspotting is the work of Dr. David Grand. What do these populations ( gymnastics and First Responders) have in common? They both train in the context of great risk. You'll learn some amazing tips and hear stories of healing from Brainspotting practitioner Jessica Crowley. The mantras from the episode are as follows: Mantra #1: Obstacles don't always result from a first-hand experience; secondary trauma is an important consideration for both peak performance and healing. Mantra #2: We are not always aware of the underlying causes of our obstacles/ “stuck” feelings, which leads to…. Mantra #3: The Brainspotting process is not always linear; Brainspotting follows the “uncertainty principle” first proposed by Quantum physicist Heisenberg. Mantra #4: Whether it is an athlete or a first responder, the “healee” has a very important and active role in the healing process (healing is not the “doing” of the practitioner) Mantra #5: In Brainspotting, verbalizing the content is not necessary; the “talking cure” has its place in mental wellness, but you don't necessarily have to talk to process and heal More about Jessica Crowley Jessica Crowley is a 24-year police sergeant for the Bartlett Police Department and is a Crisis Intervention Specialist, hostage negotiator and a former member of the Northern Illinois Critical Incident Stress Debriefing Team (NICISM). First of all, I honestly didn't wanna become a mom. I was scared that I wasn't gonna be able to give my children the love that they needed like they were supposed to have. Because when I was a kid I felt like I wasn't loved passionately enough as a child suppose have been loved by their parent and encouraged enough because my parents didn't give me that encouragement. So my goal was to always let my kids know that: "I love you and there is nothing that you cannot do. I will never stand on the way of your creativity. The word ‘can't' and ‘I won't' will no longer be in existence for you all." My kids used to think I was mean because I used to give them books to read. So, they was like, "This is a punishment". No, it's not though my kids one of the--it wasn't. I have been through domestic violence, my kids have seen that. Still legally married to the man. He tried to kill me and my kids. So we are still standing the risk. That's why I say I'm that diva because I refuse to allow you to dominate my life because if I let you dominate my life, it's like you still have your hand in my life. Sleep difficulties are common in children and adolescents, especially in some high-risk groups, such as young people with neurodevelopmental conditions or mental health problems. Clinicians working in paediatric or child mental health settings need an understanding of sleep disorders as it is important to know how sleep disturbance impacts on a young person’s physical and cognitive development, and mental health. At our recent Sleep and Mental Health Conference, we caught up with the speakers, Dr Michael Farquhar, Dr Jenna Vyas-Lee, Dr Max Davie and Dr Sally Hobson to discuss the relationship between sleep, behaviour and mental health, as well as some insights into assessment, management and barriers to interventions.

Please do not let the background noise distract you from Cheryl's story. Tammy: So hi, tell us a bit about yourself. Before outside of mothering, what are your passions your dreams? Cheryl: I'm a mother of three and my youngest had the unique passions I should say because everybody thinks that everybody have a disability. Some of them you can see it and some of them you don't. Tammy: That's right. Cheryl: My passions are education awareness and I'm learning that I have more passions as I'm going through my journey and each journey is different. My favorite thing to do, I picked up sewing crocheting and learning how to relax. Tammy: Yes. That is not so easy. Ironically it's not so easy, right? Cheryl: No, but it is and you would know why it's not easy. Tammy: That's awesome. And so I want you to pretend that you're just talking to just the general public is getting to hear what you have to say. What do you want them to know about your experience? What do you want them to understand? Cheryl: I am a 45-year-old African American and my two kids, my two oldest are 25 and 21. So the way I raised them was totally different than when I raised my 15, soon to be 16. Each of my children they saw experience of me, but my sons saw the worst. I was in an abusive relationship. I'm originally from Philadelphia but I went down south and I found out that all my life I was a caregiver and I didn't know how I'm just it doesn't mean nothing. I was taking care of me. I was taking care of my kids, I was taking care of my husband, taking care of my mom, my great aunt. You know, anybody, its just everybody would come and say, "You know how to be a caregiver". So in my bottom, in my journey, when I was going through my abusive situation with my husband I just said, "When I hit the bottom, time to go" I just up and I left thinking that my son will need counseling for me just up and left. I said, "He's going to need that because he was so young he don't need nothing" I learned that he was-- his unique gifts was coming out and I didn't know what this is or anything and nobody wouldn't tell me what it was. And I have all these questions and answers and nobody. So, my mom always taught me if you don't know do your own research. Don't believe what other people say, do your own research. Tammy: Right, good for her by the way. That is pretty awesome but go ahead. Cheryl: Yes, so I started doing my own research. I didn't know what IEP is. I didn't know why they did all these tests and everything else. The first thing I had to do is stop blaming me, I guess. As a mother that's the first thing we do is blame. Tammy: Yes it is. Cheryl: I was in a relationship. He beat on me because of that. I didn't take all my medicine, all my vitamins and everything. As that went on I found out that it wasn't. So I find out that I went to therapy. Don't think I'm crazy or nothing but I start seeing my mom and my dad. Now my mom and my dad died in 1994 and my dad died in 1981. This is now 2008 when I'm seeing and I'm actually-- they are actually talking to...

My name is Shanta Hayes. I'm a MSW, a mother of three, an advocate and proponent of self-care. Dionne: Oh, proponent of self-care. We have to talk about that. So, Shanta, tell us a little bit about your advocacy journey. Your mom-advocate journey. Shanta: My middle daughter is 14 years old and we started noticing some things that were just not quite right or on par with her developmental milestones. And so, we took her to the pediatrician. “Oh, everything is fine and it's well within norms.” And it was well within norms for a while until it wasn't. And then it started to manifest itself behaviorally. But what we found out eventually was that she has a diagnosis of ADHD and major depressive disorder. Her diagnosis have led to some challenges in school for her and that's how we first noticed it. We noticed she was having trouble getting her homework done and she was having trouble sleeping. She was having trouble just understanding the material and we thought, "Whoa! What's going on?" So, we've moved from a diagnosis of ADHD and major depressive disorder to now. We also know she has some processing issues. So, after we visit the psychologist and we've done all the testing, it's like, okay, she has some working memory issues and those things aren't necessarily solved with medication or behavior plans. So, we're now going to the neurologist and checking with the endocrinologist to make sure it's nothing hormonal. But the thing is my advocacy journey is always making sure my child is first in knowing, letting her know that we will put her needs first but that we'll also take into consideration how she's feeling. So, therapy-- we go to therapy for the depression. But she's not a fan of talk therapy. So, we're looking at other therapies now. It's like, okay, drama therapy, play therapy because those are modalities that she's really interested in. Because I need her to know that even though I'm the one making-- setting the appointments, she's the one going to the appointments. And if she's not engaging in one way, we need to find a way that works for her. So, we talk to her and we ask her, "What do you want to do? How can we make this work for you?" So, I'm letting even my 14-year old child know that her health is in her hands. Dionne: This is the self-care advocacy. Shanta: So, I need her to be an advocate for her health. I want her to know that she has a say I think a lot of people don't take that into consideration. I think we try and force a lot of different therapies or medications on our children and we're not really listening. We need to be very aware of how we allow them to engage in their own medical mental health. So, that they don't develop a sense of “I have no choice in this process”. And that's how we work with her. Dionne: So, you said you have a MSW. Did it precede or did this come along with your journey with your daughter? First of all, tell me a little bit about who you were before you became m...

Transcription [Music plays] Voice over: Welcome to “Ask the Advocate” where mental health advocates share their journey to advocacy and what it is meant for their lives. “Ask the Advocate” is a Mothers On The Frontline production. Today, we will listen to Shanta, a mother of three, clinician and advocate. This interview was recorded at the 2017 National Federation of Families for Children's Mental Health Conference in Orlando, Florida. During this particular recording, you can hear music and noise in the background from another event at the hotel. Please don't let these noises distract you from Shanta's story. Dionne: I want to say thank you very much-- Shanta Hayes: Thank you for having me. Dionne: -- for agreeing to the interview, especially, on the spot. Would you like to introduce yourself? Shanta: Hi. Thank you very much for agreeing to do this. Would you like to introduce yourself? Teresa: Sure. Thank you very much for having me. I'm Teresa Wright Johnson, and I will say that I'm a mother first and then an advocate. I believe motherhood is very challenging as a business, so I'm kind of known as an advocate and a MOMBiz Boss, and we'll talk about that later. But I'm a mom of children that were born with developmental challenges as well as physical challenges and children that have mental health challenges, learning disabilities, and more. And I advocate for them. Dionne: And you advocate for them. So Teresa, tell us a little bit about your advocacy journey. Teresa: So my journey began-- I'm the mother of four children. I bore four children. Unfortunately-- but still, fortunately, have one living child. So I had several children that died very early on when they were born. And then my other two children were also preemies. In coming-- you know this is November. This is National Pre-maturity Birth Month-- Awareness Month. A lot of people don't know that. And with premature children, sometimes you have greater risk factors. And some of the risk factors that happened and that were indicated with my first child who was Zaria-- and I have do so much for Zaria in her name. She was born with various disabilities, more physical and cognitive. She had cerebral palsy as well as metabolic disorders like mitochondrial syndrome. She also had seizures, low-birth weight, feeding issues, mobility issues, just so many different issues. But guess what? That did not sway me. I wanted to be a mother. And once I found out I was going to be a mother to Zaria, I started to getting training at the hospital-- Dionne: Oh, wow, Teresa: -- so that I could be the best advocate for her. So over the years with Zaria, I started my own support group for mothers of color called Special Treasures, because I feel that our children are not just special-needs children. They are special treasures. They are treasures that open us up, expand us, push us way beyond our comfort zones, and stuff.
