Kurt Schmidt's life story reads like an epic narrative of resilience, hope, and transformation. From his early days as a culinary school graduate to becoming a pivotal figure in the mental health community, Kurt's journey is a testament to the power of change and the human spirit's capacity to overcome. Kurt's academic journey began at Purdue University, where he earned a bachelor's degree, laying the groundwork for a diverse professional path that would span the restaurant industry, corporate food service, supply chain, and technology sectors. However, beneath the surface of these achievements, Kurt was waging a personal battle with substance use that would shape the course of his life. At the young age of 22, Kurt faced his first inpatient treatment following multiple attempts at detox, marking the beginning of a tumultuous struggle with addiction. Despite these challenges, he managed to carve out a semblance of professional success, a testament to his innate resilience and determination. Yet, the specter of addiction loomed large, leading to multiple treatments throughout his twenties. The stark warnings from health professionals—that he would not survive if he continued to drink—were a wake-up call. Kurt's health crises, including a fatty liver diagnosis and multiple seizures due to withdrawal, underscored the dire consequences of his path. But Kurt's story is not one of despair, but rather of profound transformation. It's a narrative that underscores the possibility of recovery, even from the depths of addiction. His journey to sobriety is punctuated by personal milestones and professional achievements, including his roles as a Certified Peer Support Specialist and Licensed Master Social Worker (LMSW), equipped with an MSW from Missouri State University and an MBA from Webster University. The creation of The Peer Network was a pivotal moment in Kurt's life, born from his experiences and the realization of the need for equitable opportunities and recognition for peer support specialists. His platform reflects a deep commitment to changing the narrative around mental health and substance use, offering hope and support to those navigating similar paths. Kurt's personal life, as a devoted husband to Melinda and a loving father to two daughters, reinforces the narrative of recovery and the importance of support systems in the journey towards healing. Melinda's unwavering presence through Kurt's struggles and triumphs highlights the crucial role of partnership and family in overcoming adversity. Kurt Schmidt's story, marked by setbacks and victories, serves as a beacon of hope for anyone facing the challenges of addiction and recovery. It reminds us that change is possible, that recovery is within reach, and that every individual has the potential for renewal and transformation. His life is a powerful testimony to the resilience of the human spirit, inspiring others to believe in the possibility of a brighter, healthier future. How can we cultivate a more supportive environment for mothers? Imagine a world where every mother's voice is heard, where their experiences are validated, and where support and empowerment are readily available. This week, we welcome Diana (Di) Bamford, a Maternal Mental Health Advocate, Perinatal Energy Therapist, Certified Peer Support Specialist, 200Hr Yoga Instructor, and PMADs Survivor. In this episode, Di will discuss the important topic of maternal mental health and the challenges associated with childbirth and postpartum - all from the viewpoint of someone who has experienced these challenges firsthand. Di will share raw insights and personal experiences to empower women to make informed decisions that are right for themselves and their baby. You won't want to miss this candid discussion about the true struggles mothers face on a daily basis and how to overcome them through education and self-empowerment. Quotes: "Just weighing your options, but having the opportunity to choose, because they want to treat us like you're pregnant. This is a road that is the easiest, not for the mother." – Diana Bamford "Why midwifery care is yours? Because of what Thrive does, you don't have to choose a hospital based on your insurance. [It gives the mother] the freedom to give birth wherever the mother wants." – Diana Bamford "Having the opportunity to choose for ourselves where we decide to take birth will be tremendous. The statistics show that through medical interventions, not only do our babies suffer, but the mother suffers." – Diana Bamford "The biggest challenge that we face today, in regards to what you're talking about? Shame and guilt." – Diana Bamford "Bringing awareness is my biggest vision for our planet, for our world. Because the more we know, [we can] destigmatize, normalize, and save lives." – Diana Bamford "You're not alone. But I think that's the one thing to know that it will pass. It will not last forever." – Diana Bamford Key Takeaways: Trust your gut feelings and instincts, especially when it comes to making decisions about your pregnancy and childbirth. Having someone guide you can make a significant difference. Becoming a mother is not just a physical transformation but a profound journey that involves emotional and mental aspects. Embrace the challenges and changes that come with it. Challenge the stigmas associated with mental health, especially in the context of postpartum experiences. By addressing and discussing these issues openly, we can contribute to breaking down the barriers of shame and guilt. Advocate for personalized maternity care that respects your choices. It's essential to recognize that one size does not fit all, and the ability to choose the birth experience you want can lead to better outcomes for both you and your baby. Work towards normalizing the diverse range of emotions and experiences in motherhood. Break down the stigma associated with feelings of shame and guilt. Recognize that it's natural to have a spectrum of emotions, and no mother is immune to occasional struggles. Having a challenging day or making a mistake does not define your worth or identity. Recognize imperfections as part of the human experience and understand that they don't diminish your overall value. Highlights/Timeline: [08:35] – Why should we address the stigma surrounding postpartum mental health? [11:22] – How has the attraction to midwifery care grown, especially during the the COVID period? [20:05] – Diana shares the biggest challenge mothers face today [26:14] – What is the mission and purpose of maternal mental health education? [33:13] – Diana talks about the trauma experienced by mothers [38:44] – What are Diana's thoughts on the future of Maternal and Mental Health? [45:56] – How strong is the strength of uterine contractions during childbirth? [58:03] – Diana shares her thoughts on the type of action listeners should take Conclusion: Maternal care is more than just medical treatment; it's a collective community effort, and a shared experience. Mamas, your voice is important, your struggles are valid, and together, with understanding and support, we can create a world where maternal well-being is nurtured with empathy and kindness. You are strong, and your journey is unique—embrace it with bravery, connect with others, and know that you are part of a caring community. In this episode, admonishment is given for those struggling to maintain a healthy appetite for intimacy, after confronting sexual child abuse. As one of the untold side effects of early childhood sexual abuse, sensuality often plays the scapegoat to fear - with the hope that ignoring your divine physical body, will numb your lingering energetic trauma. In actuality, it makes it worse. I introduce "Homemade Acapella EP, Nikki Boom Boom, I Got You" highlighting the debut Single, #LinkInBio, a conversation of the mature holy woman, asking the right questions, setting her boundaries, and expressing her desires - to the man she wants. The spring 2020 If You Could See Me participants began meeting in February of this year. They were supposed to have their show in June. As we are all aware this year has been an exercise in flexibility, persistence, acceptance, and patience and our project is not alone in having been effected. These five amazing women have continued to show-up for themselves and one another in truly remarkable ways. We had to postpone and then reimagine what shows would look like but now we are to thrilled share their stories in a brand new virtual format on Friday, January 22nd, at 7:30 pm via zoom. Get your tickets at www.ifyoucouldseeme.com This week Erin talks to Roger Koller about his recovery journey and his desire to help others find peace and healing. Roger Koller says this about himself: I am a person in recovery from multiple life challenges including grief, anxiety, and addictive behaviors. I was born and raised in Richmond and attended Collegiate School, Trinity Episcopal High School and matriculated from University of Richmond in 1994. However, from an early age I faced issues that I could not understand. Thanks to some poor decisions and bad luck and misinformation, I found myself in recovery environments at the turn of the millennium. I have learned many things along the way, and it is a continuum where there is always something to learn from someone else and something to pass on to others who have reached obstacles on the freeway for which I have found solutions that worked for me, which I am now in a position to share.. I am now a Certified Peer Support Specialist, a WRAP facilitator, a SMART Recovery Facilitator, and have started and led several support based peer groups at different peer-run centers around the Richmond area. I have also had the pleasure of serving on many local peer center boards and committees. With this non-profit organization, I want to continue to develop solutions and innovations in collaboration with others in the community in ways that both mirror and diverge from what others have already done before me. I hope that we can work together to find more solutions for ourselves and each other.Support our show by supporting our affiliates!Get the irel8 app and support The If You Could See Me Project at the same time! https://irel8.org/ifyoucouldseeme/iRel8 is a global, anonymous peer empowerment platform focused on mental wellness. James Knight is a full time staff member at City on a Hill church, Certified Peer Support Specialist, a Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselor Student and a devoted father and husband. As a child, James made bad decisions forcing his parents to leave their church out of shame. His biggest weakness is being judgemental as a Christian without knowing a person’s life story. This frames many of his discussions as he mentors other Christians. James teaches that there is good in everyone, but you must look to find it. After 30 years of bad choices, James looks back and reveals that at 12 he experimented with pot and alcohol, at 18 he shot up meth amphetamines and he spent the next 20 years pursuing a life of crime, sex and debauchery. Among many other things James began manufacturing different drugs for consumption. This is his testimony “Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old they will not turn from it.” - Proverbs 22:6 For past shows and to learn more about the God's Men of Influence community, check us out atwww.godsmenofinfluence.org Join us on Facebook for our daily devotionals and updates and please like our page www.facebook.com/GodsMenOfInfluence Help us spread the Word and please rate our show on itunes and leave comments for us.
