This week I'm solo, giving my rambling thoughts on both Barbie and Oppenheimer after my first view. These movies definitely require a watch as well as some folks to chat with so they will probably be revisted in greater detail another time. I just couldn't pass up making an episode about what I think is the Movie Event of the year. For two movies I decided to taste two great rye whiskies. Sagamore Spirit's Bottled in Bond batch 2 and 8 year old batch 2. They;re both really great ryes that you should try as soon as you get a chance. Cheers!

Perhaps the lower than expected scores would even push us away from this review entirely. But trust us. There was no way we could see this film, physically experience it, and not talk about it for a full episode. As usual, we give you a full non-spoiler review first. So if you’re wondering whether or not to go see it, wonder no more. We flat out tell you in the early goings. That’s why we focus on the Oscars, so we get to focus mostly on the best received of each year. That’s why we do re-watch series, to celebrate some of our favorite franchises & filmmakers & characters. That’s why we keep such close tabs on every single movie news story out there in the world with our MMOW & Oscar Race Checkpoint weekly shows. But this new Star Wars movie got under our skin. Fear led to anger. Anger led to hate. And our hatred turned both Mikes to the dark side of the happy fanboys we prefer to be. Cuz amidst all our rational & irrational takes, we ripped this movie a new one. Movie Event pods usually try and award our films with a variety of real and fake awards. Obviously, we are probably awarding this movie more of the latter variety, and yes, think Razzies. But as we always do, you get a non-spoiler section first. Though do beware. We probably offer more clues than we normally would. So if you want to know NOTHING, maybe avoid this episode until you’ve seen the film. Otherwise, we do discuss some highs & lows of the production values, performances, and script in non-spoilers before we play our spoiler warning dance music and breakdown the plot. Hopefully, you still like us if you enjoyed this movie. We are sorry for lashing out wildly at the world after this shocking disappointment. So do please let us know your thoughts on this Episode IX. Do check out our 2019/20 Oscar Sprint Profile playlist in our soundcloud feed for all our these episodes. Dolemite Is My Name, Parasite, Joker, Ad Astra, and Hustlers are our more recent additions to this list. But we’ve been at this list since the beginning of the year with reviews of Apollo 11, Us, Avengers: Endgame, Rocketman, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, and more. You can also find our Movie Event reviews of other terrific films from this year like Good Boys, Midsommar, Spider-Man: Far From Home, Ready or Not, and then some. In any case, we’ve been all over the film year with our reviews. And as we always do in this OSP, you get two reviews for the price of one. There’s a non-spoiler section with our impressions of the production values, performances & script, and we build this section up to a guess-timation of how many nominations Jojo Rabbit will get at the Oscars. Then after a spoiler warning dance music interlude, we dive into the major plotlines and discuss all our bests, worsts, and burning questions in the spoiler section. We ask some burning questions throughout both non-spoilers and spoilers. How many noms will this movie get? Did Waititi find a tonal balance? How do we view the early backlash to this movie? And does it pull off all its lofty ambitions? There’s a ton of good discussion & debate, and as always, we want to know what you think. Please tell us. We begin with a far too long Cast & Crew rundown to hopefully refresh show lovers & orient folks coming into this series for the first time, but if that doesn’t work for ya, then Mike 1 relished the chance to bust my balls. Our non-spoiler section also comments upon our low expectations going in, and we review the production values, performances, & script with an Oscar Lens upon a few potential nominations before we dive into the plot in spoilers. And what a shocking plot it was...umm, because it wasn’t all that shocking at all. For lovers of the show, you’ll get a chance to visit Downton once again and catch up with all your favorite characters. Director Julian Fellowes gives one of the more fan servicey tributes to a TV turned movie that we’ve ever seen, and it makes for a good time at the cinema. If you enjoyed this episode, then be sure to check out all our movie reviews via our playlist tab on our soundcloud account (or just scroll around our catalogue). We have playlists dedicated to the last 3 years of Oscar hopefuls and nominees with our OSP’s, and as the season heats up, we’ll be doing many more 2019 films. But right now, you can check out our coverage of Once Upon a Time in Hollywood to Rocketman to The Farewell and Luce, etc... in that playlist. You can also enjoy our Movie Event playlist with reviews on Good Boys, It Chapter Two, Midsommar, Spider-Man: Far From Home, etc. We’ve also dedicated months to several re-watch series this past year like The Films of Pixar, our Tarantino Re-Watch Series, and now, The Joker Character Study. God, this movie pissed us off. Usually, this is a film appreciation podcast, and even here, we give It Chapter Two a lot of credit. But very few movies have fired us up as much as this one did in a negative review. In other words, we freak the hell out. We’ve also covered Ready Or Not, Good Boys, Spider-Man: Far From Home, Midsommar, and Annabelle Comes Homes, and this is the third review doing our new mock award show format, which is really just a fun way to frame our superlatives and hot takes that tends to spark conversation. Don’t worry if you haven’t seen the movie yet. We open with a non-spoiler section first, before we dive into the plot, and you’ll have a spoiler warning to signal that off for you. As for a psychological difference between segments, the non-spoiler section is relatively analytical, if not deliberately a bit vague, and that spoiler section is where the yelling begins. Normally, we don’t get this hyped up for a movie review and can keep our cool better than this. But we told you when we started, we’re gonna be honest with you. Was it our high expectations? Were the comparisons to the better first film unavoidable? Did this movie just suck? Or are we just a couple of snobs spoiled by all the Oscar movies we have to review? We consider all of this as well. If you’re left wanting more from an evil clown movie or if you just can’t get enough of them, then definitely check out The Joker Character Study, our new re-watch series for the fall where we review all of the major Jokers in cinematic history. On next week’s installment, we’ll be dissecting the many iterations of Mark Hamill’s voice acting performance of the Clown Prince of Crime. So don’t miss that. And if you’re enjoying our show, do please leave us 5 stars on Apple Podcasts. Click on our shows, scroll down a few seconds, and then you’ll be able to rate us. However you feel, we want to know. We have a ton of fun breaking it all down in both our non-spoiler & spoiler reviews for this movie event. If you’re looking for recommendations on whether or not to get your asses to the theater, do check out our movie event playlist on Soundcloud. Recent episodes include Good Boys, Midsommar, and Spider-Man: Far From Home. Now we’re thrilled to add Ready Or Not to the playlist. Other reviewers compare the film to its influences, and Mike 1 can’t help, but lament the title that could have been, if, well, Robert De Niro didn’t make a bad movie 14 years ago. Non-spoilers also features our awards for the explosive performances & scene stealers, the mahogany glazed production values, our optimism over Fox Searchlight, and some serious nominations for once. Then in spoilers, we break down the best scenes with a close look at the screenplay, as well as the funniest & scariest moments of the film. We do hit on some worsts, but get back to more bests rather quickly with our favorite characters & props. If you enjoy our show, do please smash that 5 stars on Apple Podcasts. We have a new Movie Event review format, & Good Boys is a fun way to debut it. This was a funny ass movie with a surprising amount of heart. If our you could say the same thing about our podcast at some point, we’ll have done our job. Here’s hoping. Explaining the New “Movie Event” Format - 1:20 THE GOOD BOYS AWARDS SHOW!: Preliminary Awards - 4:16 Non-spoiler Performance Awards - 14:40 Secret Sauce Award - 18:33 Is This a “Movie Event?” - 19:49 SPOILER WARNING DANCE BREAK - 20:32 SPOILER AWARDS: Carryover Awards - 21:48 Highlights/Bests Awards - 23:29 Lowlights Awards - 30:45 The More Bizarre Awards - 34:09 Final Thoughts/Final Grades - 38:28 Your Homework/PLEASE LEAVE US 5*’S - 40:51 What’s Next From MMO/Words of Wisdom - 41:45 Obviously, as an Oscar themed podcast, when we review a movie, it usually has awards potential or an awards connection of some kind. But we also love to review great films PERIOD, and those come in all shapes, sizes, & marketing campaigns. Mike & I love to find the next cult classic or the next pleasant surprise that won’t get the awards attention they deserve. So when we feel compelled to review a film that’s not gonna contend for an Oscar or be a part of one of our Oscar related re-watch series, we proudly call that a movie event. But how do we somehow stay on brand while reviewing “another” kind of film, a non-awards contender? Welp, we fixed all that with this new format because we turned our movie event episodes into mock awards shows. This is something we’ve done a half dozen times - usually to culminate one of our re-watch series & always to complete each year of movie watching with our Mike, Mike & Oscars. So it’s hopefully something in our wheelhouse. But in any case, it’s a whole lot of fun to prepare & record, and we hope you like it. This is our fourth movie event on the year. We’ve done a deep dive into Midsommar, added to our Conjuring Universe series with a review of Annabelle Comes Home, and of course, we did a review of Spider-Man: Far From Home to stay on pace with our complete coverage of the MCU. There’s also 9 films & 12 episodes (with 3 two parters) in our 2019/20 Oscar Sprint Profiles playlist. The Farewell is our most recent entry into our OSP’s. So we’ve now covered 13 films in 2019 with many more to come. In fact, we’ll be reviewing Ready Or Not next week. Do let us know what you think of Good Boys. How does it rank with other films in this genre like Booksmart, Superbad & Ferris Bueller’s Day Off? Give us your takes. But life gets in the way, and Mikes can’t always agree on things after the first few production meetings. Should we probably make our programming announcements AFTER we settle on something new? Yes. Did we? No. So we’re doing our old Movie Event format for one more encore in this review of Annabelle Comes Home. The good news? We’re making a ton of progress on a new format. So stay tuned. As usual, there’s a non-spoiler section followed by a full spoiler review. We were pleasantly surprised by one of the core performances, and we were happy to report that even when there’s a sinkhole in the plot, or in the logic of that plot, we still have a fun time yelling at the screen. There’s a lot of bests & worsts to include as highlights and lowlights. But as movie event pods tend to do, we generate all kinds of fire in equal direction. In any case, we do come out on the positive side for this review. You can definitely chalk some of that up to us being big fans of horror and of The Conjuring Universe. So if you enjoyed this episode, make sure you go back to our other conjuring film reviews. We had a blast once again reviewing 2 more Pixar films, Monsters Inc. & Monsters University. As advertised, we shall take on the pixar rewatch somewhat out of order so that we can discuss the separate franchises in one sitting, and then next major franchise of the series after the Toy Story films are these Monsters movies. So it’s fitting that we reboot our rewatch with these two thoroughly entertaining and heartwarming tales about monsters becoming and staying friends. The format of these episodes sticks to our tried & true movie review structure that we’ve come to follow for all our Oscar Sprint Profiles, Movie Event, & Retrospective reviews. There’s a non-spoiler section complete with a production profile of cast & crew, movie specs, production nuggets, and spoiler free reviews of the production values, performances, and script. Then we have a spoiler warning dance musical interlude before we break down the plots in full during our spoiler section. But we also have added several important segments to this rewatch series. In the non-spoiler section, we dive into the state of the Pixar company and discuss the environment at the time of production going into the making-of these films. In the spoiler section, we discuss 2 more rules in the 22 Rules of Pixar Storytelling, and we also have a terrific chat about all of the moments that warmed our hearts by breaking them first and of course, all the moments that just made us super happy in segment we’re calling Heartbreaks & Happiness. We finish with some more Best & Worst scenes in the spoiler section, and yes, we also talk about how both films played to the Academy in our non-spoiler Oscar Lens. Throughout the journey though, we also have a blast dissecting how Pixar tells their unique and uniquely entertaining stories. We did a full series on the entire Marvel Cinematic last spring. This year, we wanted to both hit our brand of Oscar films, while also staying current by previewing you for what will be a huge movie event with the next Toy Story. We also get to learn from both the Pixar business model & production story AND the 22 Rules of Pixar Storytelling, well known and studied by screenwriters around the world as a few added segments to these reviews. In this episode, we begin where it all started for computer generated feature film animation, in Andy’s Room with 1995’s Toy Story. As promised, Mike 1 chronicles the early history of the Pixar brand, how it got off the ground at Lucasfilm, with steward Steve Jobs, and how they eventually found their home at Disney to make this inaugural Oscar winning film. We otherwise follow some familiar formatting, as you’ve come to know & love with our Oscar Sprint Profile, Movie Event, & Retrospective film reviews. There’s a non-spoiler section filled with the background & behind the scenes information followed by a non-spoiler review of the production values, performances, script, & Oscar Lens before we dive into the plot in a spoiler section forewarned by some dance music. Then once we begin that spoiler section, we debut our 22 Rules of Screenwriting segment and go over Rule No. 1, followed by two more unique additions of Heartbreaks and Happiness, AKA, where this cartoon film managed to tug on our heart-strings and then why it made us so happy. There’s still a look into some more of our bests and worsts, and we further break down why the screenplay is so very special before we complete the review & let you know what’s coming next in the series. Hint, we won’t always go in order. But don’t worry cuz there be monsters. As always, let us know what you think. Which moments broke your heart & made you the most happy? All the previewing you could ever need. ***This Episode Discusses Other MCU Movies*** We don’t get into all the details of Avengers: Infinity War, but you can certainly take what we say into spoiler territory pretty quickly. So our allusions kinda spoil things. Also, without seeing Captain Marvel or without reading the comics, we guess its plot. Where Captain Marvel Seems to Fit in the MCU/2019 - 1:25 Cast and Crew - 3:47 Our Biggest Concern - 6:17 The Mikes’ 100% Accurate Plot Guesses of Captain Marvel: AlsoMike’s Take - 9:15 Mike1’s Take - 16:51 A More Serious Discussion - 20:59 WE NEED YOUR FEEDBACK AND THIS WILL TELL YOU HOW - 25:19 Captain Marvel is easily the biggest movie event of the new year, and might be the most important film in the last 6 to 8 to 10 months. It’s a huge moment for the MCU and for blockbuster filmmaking in general. We’re certainly cheering it on, but we also have concerns with the marketing campaigns. There are definitely some red flags in the trailers, and we also recognize the high degree of difficulty that the film must take on itself. Captain Marvel has to launch a new hero and franchise while also satisfying audiences after the Infinity War. So of course, we needed one more substantive discussion on what we could and should expect with this new MCU film debuting this week. On the heels of the Oscars, the new HBO docs, and since the stakes are so high for this movie, the Mikes needed to unwind a little bit and flex their creative muscles. Therefore, we decided to spend the latter half of the preview guessing the plot of Captain Marvel. It was a fun exercise, and we hope it’s a fun listen. Stay tuned for our full movie review of Captain Marvel, which we’ll drop ASAP after we see it this Thursday. It’ll be the first Oscars Sprint Profile or Movie Event of 2019, and there’s a lot more coming. Last year, we put up near 50 episodes of this kind, and if we continue to build on our totals, we’ll probably top that number this year. The 2019 film year is in full swing after those Oscars. We just previewed all of the likely contenders for red carpets come next February with our two part series of the Way Too Early 2020 Oscar Predictions. Then we reviewed several new Netflix films on our last MMOW including The Boy Who Harnessed The Wind and Paddleton. As always, let us know what you think. He’s truly one of the pioneers in this business, & in our opinion, one of the most knowledgeable and entertaining interviews we could possibly get. A sincere thanks, once again to Clayton and Awards Circuit for chatting with us. Of course, we asked Clayton to analyze some of the bigger moments at Sunday’s Academy Awards. We also made sure to talk to him about his career & origins int he business. Here, he told some of his story about the formations of both Awards Circuit and LEJA, as well as some fun tidbits about how he spends his Oscar Night and some of his favorite traditions. Then prepare to have your minds blown because Clayton lays out some analysis on the new academy, and he breaks down the history of our favorite awards show like only he could. Though the winner seems like a certainty, we do love a bunch of these movies, and it’s a fun ranking episode to be sure. There’s also some fascinating narratives to indulge and perhaps some of the most intriguing personalities we’ve had to analyze in awhile. If you told us a few years ago that we’d get Yorgos friggin’ Lanthimos, Adam funnyman McKay, AND Spike “Critic No 1 of the Academy” Lee in the same set of nominations with two foreign filmmakers who directed black & white foreign language passion projects about their parents!?, we’d have never believed you. So it’s another fun & loaded episode for you all. If you enjoy these episodes, do go back to our catalog for the Best Picture, Animated Feature, Actor, Actress, the two Supportings, and Original Song. MMO has also reviewed the vast majority of the nominated films with over fifty Oscar Sprint Profile or Movie Event reviews. There’s award show preview, prediction, and recap episodes, many of which are featured in our Oscar Race Update segments on our weekly variety show, MMOW. Then do enjoy all our retrospectives, special movie franchise review series, and of course, our 2018 year in review episodes. We’ve already covered the Best Scenes of the Film Year, and we’ll have our MMO’s (The Mike, Mike, & Oscars still to come), as well as our final predictions, and of course, we’ll be recording after next Sunday’s Academy Awards for a full recap. Reilly Anspaugh & Geoffrey James of Headgum came spoke to us about Timothee Chalamet films, Bond Villains, & their recent trip to Sundance. Then we have another major get in MMO Interviews episode 3. The Mikes sat down with Scott Feinberg of the Hollywood Reporter, foremost Oscarologist, Awards Chatter Podcast Host, and oracle behind the beloved Feinberg Forecast. All of our guests thus far have been kind enough to tell us their origin stories & how they’ve navigated their careers to date. Scott certainly did as much,, and he also broke down many of the Oscar categories, the year’s biggest stories like that Best Popular Film category, filled us in on some late breaking buzz, and much much more. MMO has and will continue to be a year round film appreciation podcast, and we love to love all kinds of movies, especially those we wish could be Oscar films like this long time favorite, American Psycho. Since it’s Women In Horror Month, and since we had such a great time with our first collaboration with the #AllTheHorror brand, we’re thrilled to join such an awesome group of podcasts, blogs, and horror genre lovers once again with this new celebration. Throughout the history of our show, we’ve covered movie news whether we react to breaking stories, do a monthly Hollywood Hot Takes episode, or as we’ve done lately, kept you up to date on a more regular basis with our DYC / Story of the Week segments on MMO Weekly. We’ve been shocked and saddened by the lack of awarded female filmmakers, in particular with last year’s Golden Globes and certainly, with this entire award seasons’ “all male nominees.” Then as Jason Blum exacerbated the problem by speaking out of his ass a few months back about women not wanting to direct horror films, Mary Harron’s American Psycho stood out as the most obvious and excellent of rebuttals. So #WiHMx seemed like the perfect time to tackle this retrospective. On MMO, we love our movie review format whether it be an OSP (Oscar Sprint Profile), Movie Event, or retrospective. In any case, the structure of each episode offers two reviews for the price of one. We do an entire non-spoiler presentation including segments on the Cast & Crew bios & filmographies, the behind the scenes production stories, all of the numbers / awards / premiere dates, etc. in our Specs, and then we discuss the film’s production values, performances, & script without any plot details. You then get some spoiler warning dance music, and we break down the plot in all of its glorious, or in this case, in all of its gory detail in our spoiler section. Here, we discuss all our best & worst scenes, how they told the story in a technical sense, and then culminate the section with some final grades. As always, let us know what you think. An Unprecedented Situation. ***This is a Non-Spoiler Episode*** As we must do, we make some general allusions to plot movements throughout these films. But we do try our very best and succeed in avoiding full spoilers. Though investigations can be made by some of our clues to what happens. So beware if you’re allergic to that. Intro / What’s a Category Review - Top of the Show Snubs - 1:44 BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS CATEGORY OVERVIEW Amy Adams, Vice Why She’ll Win - 12:13 Why She Won’t - 17:15 Marina de Tavira, Roma Why She’ll Win - 21:00 Why She Won’t - 25:15 Regina King, If Beale Street Could Talk Why She’ll Win - 26:16 Why She Won’t - 30:15 Emma Stone, The Favourite Why She’ll Win - 33:15 Why She Won’t - 38:48 Rachel Weisz, The Favourite Why She’ll Win - 43:09 Why She Won’t - 47:14 Perfecting Perfection Re-Rank - 49:00 Outro/Words of Wisdom/Social Media - 54:45 We conclude our reviews of the 4 acting categories with this episode on Best Supporting Actress. This show also works as one final preview of the BAFTA’s, which will happen this Sunday, and which we’ll recap for you on Monday with MMO Weekly. The supporting actress category has been and continues to be one of the most intriguing of the Oscars Race. There’s a strange and unlikely fact of Regina King winning the Critics Associations, Globe, and Choice awards before somehow not getting nominated for the SAG or BAFTA. Then of course, we have 5 of the better performances of the year to debate. It’s a loaded year, and quite the category, and MMO is all over it. The format is simple, tried, & true. We discuss the snubs after our intro, and then we breakdown each nominee’s chances with arguments for and against them winning. Amy Adams has the narrative and the Academy politics on her side. Marina De Tavira will probably be in the most awarded film of the night and has a performance on the rise in people’s perceptions (including ours). Regina King has narratives in her favor, as well as stats. But her unprecedented situation draws worries from us both, before we calm ourselves with a discussion of her tremendous performance. Then again, Regina may not win because of both those roles in The Favourite. Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz acted the hell out of their parts in one of our best films and one of the Academy’s most nominated on the year. We offer new takes on why these performances might rival King’s at both the BAFTA’s and back across the pond at the Oscars. If you enjoy this category review, we’ve already released many others including Best Original Song, Supporting Actor, Lead Actress, Animated Feature, and Lead Actor. We’ll also weigh in upon the Screenplays, Director, and Picture before Oscar night. We’ve also reviewed nearly all of the films in these categories in our OSP’s, and we now have nearly fifty 2018 movie reviews in our Oscar Sprint Profile and Movie Event series. Our MMO Weekly episodes give you a race update and recap all of the big award show precursors on our regularly scheduled variety show. Then we also have many special presentations including retrospectives, interviews, MMO made up Award Shows, and many Oscar off-season episodes reviewing and dissecting all our favorite series of films. The Best Race of all the Categories Perhaps. ***This is a Non-Spoiler Episode*** In the sense of a story teller, we may do some winks and nods and foreshadowing of the plot twists from these movies with what we talk about, but I don’t think we explicitly state any spoilers. Best Lead Actor Category Review: Intro / What’s a Category Review - Top of the Show Snubs - 1:50 Christian Bale, Vice Why He’ll Win - 15:24 Why He Won’t - 19:39 Bradley Cooper, A Star is Born Why He’ll Win - 25:17 Why He Won’t - 31:58 Willem Dafoe, At Eternity’s Gate Why He’ll Win - 38:14 Why He Won’t - 40:46 Rami Malek, Bohemian Rhapsody Why He’ll Win - 44:07 Why He Won’t - 50:10 Viggo Mortensen, Green Book Why He’ll Win - 52:58 Why He Won’t - 55:57 Perfecting Perfection Re-Rank - 59:12 Outro/Words of Wisdom/Social Media - 1:02:32 This is our Best Lead Actor Category Review, and usually, this rhetorical exercise requires we stretch our imaginations to argue for some of the contenders and nominees. But we do have quite the race at the center of this category between Bohemian Rhapsody’s Rami Malek and Christian Bale from Vice. Then we have one of our collective favorite performances of the year with Bradley Cooper from A Star Is Born also in the field here. So it’s a loaded review from the Mikes of Oscar on the Lead Actor nominees. We’ve come to love and flourish in this format, which is pretty simple. There’s an intro followed by a list of who we think are the snubs of the nomination process. Then we breakdown each actor’s chances of why they will and will not win the Oscar. It’s a rhetorical exercise only for the mightiest or kookiest of awards season pundits, and we happily expand our minds for your audible pleasure. This is the 5th Oscar Category review of 9 eventual episodes (we think / we hope) that we’ll release before the Academy Awards. You can go back and listen to our Best Original Song, Supporting Actor, Lead Actress, and Animated Feature shows to enjoy more of this format. We’ve also reviewed near 50 (now) films with our Oscar Sprint Profile and Movie Event film review series. MMO Weekly is our regularly scheduled variety show that allows us to cover every weekend’s awards show results, and there’s an Oscar Race segment in each of those episodes. Then we also have some MMO special presentations of retrospectives, interviews, and of course, other reviews and previews of the biggest moments of this Awards Season for you to enjoy in that massive back catalog of yours. Still, we enjoy reviewing and appreciating movies year round. Our show has done full series on the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Conjuring Films, Mission Impossibles, and the entire Halloween Franchise thus far. We’re planning long looks at Fast & Furious and the films of Pixar to name a few in the year to come, and we’ll certainly continue our focus on new releases in the MCU with the upcoming Captain Marvel, Avengers: End Game, and Spider-Man: Far From Home releases from Disney in the coming spring. Then if you like how we cover horror films, we will be diving into another new classic for the All The Horror & their Women In Horror Month special event this February with a review of Mary Harron’s American Psycho starring Oscar favorite, Christian Bale as Patrick Bateman. Then we dive into our plot-less look at the production values, performances, and script before the spoiler warning dance music plays. Then it’s a full blown discussion of all story details including our best & worst scenes of the film. There are over forty other 2018 movies reviewed thus far in either our Oscar Sprint Profile or Movie Event playlists now on Soundcloud. Plus a Snubs Named Toni & Not Named Toni Discussion. ***This is a Spoiler Free Episode*** We talk about some Oscar Reel Scenes in broad strokes. So if you’re allergic to hints and generalizations, then perhaps beware. Otherwise, we avoid any plot spoilers. Intro / The Knicks Trade KP / You Don’t Care - Top of the Show Best Actress Snubs - 1:53 Glenn Close, The Wife: Why She’ll Win - 12:41 Why She Won’t - 18:15 Yalitza Aparicio, Roma: Why She’ll Win - 21:10 Why She Won’t - 23:11 Olivia Colman, The Favourite: Why She’ll Win - 26:25 Why She Won’t - 32:07 Lady Gaga, A Star Is Born: Why She’ll Win - 36:05 Why She Won’t - 40:57 Melissa McCarthy, Can You Ever Forgive Me?: Why She’ll Win - 46:12 Why She Won’t - 48:55 Perfecting Perfection AKA Our Re-Rank of the Nominees - 52:36 (W/ More Intriguing Questions) Outro / Social Media / Words of Wisdom - 59:08 It’s our Best Actress Category Overview! Glenn Close is finally having HER year, or is she? Lady Gaga turned in one of the best musical performances of the decade, but will she win? Olivia Colman delivers as much range and intrigue as any actress in the past several years, but she’s not showing up to award shows? Yalitza was teaching pre-school, and now she’s nominated for a Best Actress Oscar. Then if Melissa McCarthy got an Oscar Nom for enthusiastically shitting into a sink, she’s gonna win an honorary EGOT for forging literary letters, right??!! We breakdown each of these nominees, making the case for and against their chances of winning. It’s a rhetorical exercise only the greatest minds could make plausible, and we’re are far from said heads. So what you’re left with… is another batshit episode of Mike, Mike, and Oscar. And of course - YES, we have a major discussion on the snubs of this category, both those named Toni and those not named Collette. Check out our previous category overviews on Lady Gaga’s Best Original Song and Mahershala’s Best Supporting Actor nominees. We also have Oscar Sprint Profiles for the films of each of this Best Lead Actresses, and you can check out over forty 2018 movie reviews in both our OSP & Movie Event playlists on Soundcloud. Perhaps that’s why this was one of the easier and smoothest recording sessions in our history. Or maybe we just took our cue from great screenplay of The Favourite. In any case, we thoroughly enjoyed this conversation about one of the year’s best. Our non-spoiler review covers a lot of ground as we offer filmographies of Emma Stone, Rachel Weisz, and Olivia Coleman, who all seem to be contenders. Then we dive into our reviews of the production values, which if they aren’t yet contenders, we think they probably should be. There’s also a ton of history to analyze both in terms of the production notes and the production process as Yorgos Lanthimos distinguishes himself from his previous films to deliver perhaps his most palatable, if not most polished film to date. The spoiler section kicks off with an awkward joke, as they tend to do. Then we dive into many of our best scenes, the one we shared as our worst, and of course, we break down the final scenes. Now if you’re keeping score at home, we actually failed to mention one of our Best Scenes of the Year that we mentioned on Wednesday’s halfisode. So go back and enjoy that discussion as we kick ourselves now. But it just goes to show you how many great scenes we wanted to talk about in the episode. It’s our 30th Oscars Sprint Profile on the year, and do go back to our massive catalog in order to plan your next movie night, or nights as you prepare to bone up on all your Oscar contenders before Hollywood’s big night now less than two months away. We also have a ton of preview episodes and award season updates and primers, not the least of which, we bring to you on a weekly basis with our new variety show MMOW. Although we love everything Oscar related, our podcast does enjoy taking a detour whenever the mood strikes. We cover plenty of blockbusters in our Movie Event series as well as some of our favorite movie series like the MCU, Mission Impossibles, Conjuring films, Halloween Franchise, and we just finished reviewing 3 of our beloved childhood Christmas films this past month as we led you through the holidays by way of memory lane. Some big picture Best Picture Oscar theories. ***This Oscar Sprint Profile on Vice has a Spoiler Section*** Intro / What’s an OSP? / How We Prepared For This One - Top of the Show Cast & Crew & Inside Christian Bale’s Living Room - 2:23 Story Inception & Production Notes & Flu Inspired Stories - 9:38 Movie Specs & Some Best Picture Numbers That Don’t Make Sense - 13:07 Plot / Premise & The Curious Case of Dick Cheney - 16:35 Oscar Lens Magnified Throughout Non-Spoiler Review: Some big picture Best Picture Oscar theories - 21:02 Best Director, Liberal Hero Adam McKay - 25:28 Review of Performances led by Bale & Adams - 29:23 The Rest of the Categories & the rest of the Critics - 32:26 Spoiler Warning Dance Music - 36:25 SPOILER-FILLED REVIEW Watch or Don’t Watch Carryover - 37:34 Best Scenes - 51:56 Worst Scenes Recap - 56:51 Final Grades - 59:24 Outro / Social Media / Words of Wisdom - 1:01:55 Adam McKay’s Vice has become the most polarizing film of the season. Most Oscar experts predict the film will be nominated for a bunch of awards. The Golden Globes, Critics Choice, and SAG’s then affirmed those predictions by including Vice in their field of nominees. Now in a shocking turn of events, the rest of the movie critic community weighed in upon this film, and all the scores plummeted. WTF happened? We may begin this normal Oscar Sprint Profile the same way with cast & crew filmographies, story production notes, and movie specs. But we dive into several rabbit holes of substantive conversation including some politics, film theory, and of course, Oscar prognostication. If ever there was an opportunity, if ever there was a year, if ever there was a podcast to dive into these weighty topics, it was this episode of MMO, and we did our best to approach these topics with as much honesty and integrity as we could bring to the podcast table. Hot takes flew fast & furious from our admittedly partisan lips, but we also tried to think big picture about this Best Picture contender. The result - we didn’t necessarily break this movie down in as much detail as we have done in other OSPs. Though we tried to make up for any lack in film criticism by addressing these incredibly important topics. This is our 29th OSP. Go to our Soundcloud account for a handy playlist where we have grouped them all together. There’s also a 2018 Movie Event playlist, and we review another half dozen films or so every Monday on MMO Weekly. Of course, we also have several fun series of reviews including our coverage of the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe, Halloween Franchise, Conjuring films, Mission Impossible movies, and most recently, our Very Merry MMO Holiday Movie Reviews where we reviewed 3 childhood Christmas favorites. So if you’ve seen & loved or have loved to hate a film in 2018, or if you’re deciding whether or not to watch one of these awards season contenders, or if you’re just planning your next movie night, do check out our massive catalog. Our review of The Wife is why. The production profile lays the groundwork for our review as usual. Could this finally be the year for Glenn Close to win her first Oscar? We recap all of her Awards history during the cast & crew, share what was definitely her missed calling, and then we cover perhaps the best / worst Dad Joke maybe ever. Our breakdown of the numbers, reviews of the production values and the script - it all orbits around the remarkable performance at the center of this film. After we give you your money’s worth in the non-spoiler section, there’s a musical interlude to warn you of spoilers, and it’s go-time. We give you the full plot details, mentioning a few worst scenes before harkening back to many more of the better ones. Where will this film rank in our year at large? That is NOT this episode. THIS episode is what happened after that tremendously focused and well coordinated effort of content production. That will be our next episode of Hollywood H-H-HOT Takes giving you a complete overview of all the Oscar News coming out of the 3 renowned fall film festivals & previewing the NYFF. This is the rest of the topics we wanted to cover from the past month. It’s some fun stuff, the non-Oscar stuff, but since we were so goofy, we’re calling our Hollywood NOT Takes. Because they’re NOT takes, basically… we just tell bizarre stories and make ridiculous references for 30 minutes, talking past each other like the obliquely written characters from a Noah Baumbach script. Even still, there’s a fun array of topics we should have addressed better. James Bond might be dead soon, Also Mike still pays for Moviepass for some reason, the Joker is actually just Joaquin Phoenix with a bad haircut, Henry Cavill is too hot for the DCEU, The Conjuring 3, Zombieland 2, and Rambo 5 all go into production soon, and Leonardo DiCaprio has the same fashion sense as one of your hosts. So yes, these were all fun topics to discuss, but please don’t judge us too harshly. We’ll drop this as an early in the week bonus episode, and perhaps it could play on as a lively B-Side in your listening futures. If not, ...well, we had fun. We sing, we rap, we quote SNL skits… we’re triple threats! And it’s a kooky intro, as we usually do before we have to discuss serious subjects. The Kevin Spacey sexaul assault allegations are certainly that, and we go through a timeline on the accusations and industry reactions. This timeline then leads into our coverage of the production and re-production of Ridley Scott’s All the Money in the World. We chronicle the Times Up / Golden Globes backlash to the wage gap story regarding Michelle Williams and Mark Wahlberg’s salaries paid out and eventually, paid forward, and we offer Cast & Crew filmographies for director Ridley Scott, writer David Scarpa, and stars Christopher Plummer Michelle Williams, and (sort of) Mark Wahlberg. We giggle like idiots with several digressions down rabbit holes into a Wonderland of corny jokes. You love us. Also, please love us. In the movie specs section, we break down whether or not the recasting could have possibly salvaged the film’s destiny. Then we dive headlong into our non-spoiler review of the technical mastery of the production values, some of the Oscar worthy performances, and how NOT to portray spies in film. Hint, don’t cast Mark Wahlberg as a secret agent man. (Aren’t you glad I put that song in your head now? You are? So am I.) The movie has its highs and lows, and we flush them out in both the spoiler and preceding non-spoiler reviews of the film. The script is strong, but could it have been stronger? We create a writer’s room of two here and bang out what we think would have been a better story. Here’s us looking forward to how Danny Boyle is gonna tell the story in the upcoming Mini-Series.
