Homeless outreach workers are continuing to visit a homeless encampment in St. Paul Tuesday, in hopes of transitioning residents there into shelters. The city plans to clear the encampment in Pig's Eye Park Wednesday evening.The city will hold a special public hearing at noon Tuesday to continue hearing from constituents. The plan has faced fierce opposition. City leaders say the closure is needed after an increase in emergency calls to the encampment.Minnesota water systems have blocked multiple hacking attempts since a cyberattack last week. That attack temporarily took some local water systems offline and prompted officials to review their cybersecurity measures. Minnesota was one of seven states that reported attacks on water systems. Officials have not identified who was behind it, but the New York Times reports investigators suspect Iran.Minneapolis Community Safety Commissioner Todd Barnette has agreed to continue to serve in his post until the end of the year as the city searches for his replacement. Barnette has served for one three-year term as commissioner for the office of community safety, which was created in 2022 and oversees police, fire and neighborhood safety.Mayor Jacob Frey nominated Barnette to a second term this spring, but the Minneapolis City Council twice rejected his nomination. Council members cited the slow pace of police reform in the city and almost $20 million in police budget overruns last year.The Republican-endorsed candidate for U.S. Senate is not being allowed to take part in a candidate forum at this week's Farmfest. Former Navy SEAL Adam Schwarze is not among the candidates on the list for the Senate forum Wednesday. The current lineup includes four other candidates — two Democrats and two Republicans. The annual agriculture industry event kicks off Tuesday in Redwood County in southern Minnesota. This past Sunday, Pastor Kyle announced that he is stepping down from his staff position. We look forward to worshipping with the Barnette family for years to come. Pastor Kyle has ensured that the ministries that he oversees are in a good place. The Academy classes have been planned for the remainder of the year. Our coaching team, that supports our leads the small group leaders, will continue to function with  two elders providing leadership.  Re|engage will continue, as planned, in the fall.

Taylor Dahlin and Josh Martin join me for a conversation about something none of us has witnessed before: a mayoral appointee getting voted down by the Minneapolis City Council. On Thursday, Todd Barnette failed to secure the majority vote required to be reappointed as the Commissioner of Community Safety. Mayor Jacob Frey says the council's action has nothing to do with Barnette's job performance; the council is simply acting to spite the mayor. In reality, as we discuss, there is plenty of fault to find with Barnette's tenure. Plus we blow your mind with the philosophical question: can a mayor veto the absence of an action? We also talk about the successful reappointment of City Operations Officer Margaret Anderson Kelliher and City Attorney Kristyn Anderson.In the second half of the show we go into detail on the Minneapolis Charter Commission's attempt to eliminate the public hearing and confirmation process for a handful of mayoral appointees (Civil Rights, Regulatory Services, Health, and Assessor's Office). Barnette has spent her life being a word detective, and in her new book, "Friends with Words: Adventures in Languageland," she shares that story. Episode 295 features baseball gaijin, Tony Barnette and an encore presentation of Barbecue Hall of Fame member, Lee Ann Whippen Tony Barnette is a former professional baseball pitcher and the main subject of the book, A Baseball Gaijin: Chasing a Dream to Japan and Back written by our previous guest, Aaron Fischman.  Tony played in Major League Baseball for the Texas Rangers and Chicago Cubs and in Nippon Professional Baseball for the Tokyo Yakult Swallows.  Tony took a nontraditional route to the Major Leagues.  He started in the MLB's minor leagues, spent six years pitching in Japan for Tokyo's Yakult Swallows, and then at the age of 32 had his first cup of coffee with the Major League's, Texas Rangers.  Thank you to Aaron Fischman for helping to to arrange this.   Lee Ann Whippen is a member of the Barbecue Hall of Fame.  She developed her love of cooking barbecue from an early age learning from her dad and she has used that knowledge and love to become an extremely well-known and respected pitmaster.  As a competition cook she has won multiple world, national, and state barbecue championships.  On television she has shone brightly on various competition shows, winning the premier season of BBQ Brawl on Food Network and defeating Bobby Flay on Throwdown with Bobby Flay.  She is also a restaurateur who has owned restaurants in Virginia, Illinois, and Florida.  She is co-host of the podcast, BBQ Nation with Jeff Tracy.
