On today's podcast we welcome guest Eva Baker AIA, LEED AP BD+C. Eva is an architect who specializes in laboratory planning. She is currently a Senior Associate and Director of the Philadelphia Office of HERA Laboratory Planners. We talk about: - Eva's pairing of a Bachelor degree in Chemistry with a Master's degree in Architecture so that she could combine two of her passions. - Whether she followed the advice of her mentors to focus on general architecture before diving into laboratory expertise. - I ask Eva what are the important components to consider when designing a lab including structural modules, safety, flexibility, MEP, and equipment and then we also talk about emerging trends in laboratory design like the integration of automation. - We discuss her long path to working at HERA and how consultancy functions differently than an architecture firm. - We talk about her favorite types of projects, skills she looks for when hiring, and how long it takes (spoiler- two years!) to become a lab specialist. - Eva also shares about the challenges she faced when she returned from maternity leave, had to balance office work and pumping, late nights working "parent hours", the constraints of childcare, and the societal and self-imposed stress of motherhood and career progression. - We end by talking about the importance of sharing responsibilities at home so that she and her partner can pursue meaningful careers as well as a successful family life. - Enterprise German: https://www.goethe.de/ins/au/en/spr/unt/kum/cli/cli/unt.html - Podcast: https://www.goethe.de/ins/au/de/spr/unt/kum/gen/sup.html?wt_sc=superfrauen

I chat with TeensGotCents creator Eva Baker about why she's so passionate about educating teens about personal finance, what inspired her to found The Teenpreneur Conference, and what she wants teens to know the most about managing their money the smart way. Long description: Unlike many teens her age, Eva Baker started to get interested in personal finance at the young age of 16. She started listening to Dave Ramsey's teachings, and got hooked. But what she soon realized is there was a ton of information out there on how to fix your financial woes, but not a ton on how to avoid them when you're a teen and just starting your own personal finance journey. That's when she got the idea to create TeensGotCents, a financial literacy blog for teens that explores money and issues relating to adolescents specifically. I sure wish her blog was around when I was in high school! I'm sure I would have figured out how to make my part-time job income go further. As she mentions in the interview, she also started her blog as her major project for school, but it eventually took off and became her full-time gig. Now in her 20s, she manages a staff of writers to keep creating valuable content for teens on the website. And if that weren't impressive enough, she also founded her own conference — The Teenpreneur Conference — that's all about promoting entrepreneurship to teens. The next conference will be taking place June 8-10, 2017 in Jacksonville, Florida. Good personal finance habits start young. Our children don’t get much personal finance education in school so it’s up to parents to provide that education. There are things we can do throughout their childhood to turn our kid into a money master. Today we take to Eva Baker from Teens Got Cents. She started Teens Got Cents as a home school project when she began to get interested in personal finance. She started doing some research but found that most information was geared toward adults and there wasn't much to help kids. Eva saw a gap and decided to fill it and that's how her site started when she was just 16. Eva blogs about how teens can shop smart, get a great part time job, go to college debt free, save money, and start their own business. In 2015 she founded The Teenpreneur Conference. This annual conference brings together teen business owners as well as teens who want to start their own business in a community that truly is by teens, for teens. On this Queer Money, we interview teenpreneur Eva Baker of TeensGotCents.com. Schools aren’t adequately teaching today’s students about money. Enter Eva Baker. Eva only recently lost her teenager-card, but is teaching teenagers and others too young to enter a bar about money. What started as a home-school project assigned by her mother, Eva has turned into a full-time job and a company with four employees.
Eva Baker is a 20-year old who started a business as a project when she was a teen. Her blog, TeensGotCents.com, has grown into a powerful resource for teens who want to learn about personal finances and also about running a small business. In June 2017, Eva will host the second TeenPreneur Conference, a place for young people to learn about starting, building or running their own small business. After talking with Eva over Mocktails, my biggest take-away was to not let age determine our goals in life. Young or old, we are all on unique journeys. When inspiration hits us, we need to pursue it with passion - no matter what stage of our lives we are in. You can find more about Eva and her conference on my website, http://financially-blonde.com/mmpodcast

This event welcomes memoir authors are Eva Baker (Martha and Eva) and Maggie Holeman (Women in the Locker Room) and children authors and illustrators La Von Bridges (Alaska Animals, We Love You) and Betty Hedstrand and Chris Floyd (Clever Little Bird). Martha and Eva is the story of a mother and daughter’s journey as German Refugees during WWII. It describes the life they had in Schlesien and the fear and deprivation that they experienced when they became German refugees--where more than 400,000 lost their lives during this expulsion. Martha Maiwald ‘s original memoir was written in the old German (pre-Hitler) script, translated into German, and then ultimately translated into English by her daughter, Eva Baker. Maggie Holeman's memoir, Women in the Locker Room, examines her extraordinary career at the Anchorage airport and being the first woman to achieve the award of weapon proficiency at the Sitka Police Academy. And for her response to the YC-122 crash, she received a legislative commendation for bravery LaVon Bridges and Alice Wright composed chants and poems for their students to learn orally. Subsequently, they learned to read, using the poems and chants now in Alaska Animals, We Love You Betty Hedstrand’s book Clever Little Bird follows the adventures of a moose and magpie in Anchorage. This beautiful book is full of Chris Floyd’s amazing artwork.

The His & Her Money Show: Managing Money, Marriage, and Everything In Between
Eva Baker's story is especially appealing to parents and students looking at college. She is a homeschooled senior in high school and an avid blogger at the ripe old age of 18, writing the Teens Got Cents blog. Her story also serves as an example to students on how they can tap into what they love to create a business (and an income) for themselves. The website got started when Eva's mom asked her to do a project for her remaining high school years to develop communication and life skills. Eva enjoyed rock climbing, but opted instead to write about her own experience in saving money as a teen after listening to an audio book from Dave Ramsey called Total Money Makeover. She realized there was a wealth of information online for adults looking to manage their money, but nothing for teens.
#142: This 17 year old has got some sense! Eva Baker started a personal finance blog at http://TeensGotCents.com and is learning a lot about how money really works. This will benefit her greatly when she strikes out in this world and makes her mark. Eva tells the story of how she started a personal finance blog at age 16, how she budgets her money with a basic envelope system, and then speaks from her own personal experiences about why having a simple plan and broad goals is key for any teenager to be prepared for adulthood.
