In the Season 5 premiere, Anna McCorvey RA, LEED AP BD+C talks about inspiring professional journey and her mission-driven work. Anna shares the story behind founding the River East Design Center (REDC) in Southeast D.C., emphasizing its focus on addressing community needs before initiating design projects. She discusses the center's focus on educational outreach and conceptual design services, aiming to empower local residents with crucial information. Anna also opens up about her role as an Equitable Development Manager at the Building Bridges Across the River (11th Street Bridge Park Project), her fellowship experience with the Goethe Institute and why authentic community engagement is critical to meaningful change. The episode concludes with reflections on her personal backgrounds and shared passion for community-focused design. Anna McCorvey is a practicing architect in Washington, DC whose initial interest in architecture was spiked at an early age through public housing. At the early age of 5 she noticed the subtle and sometimes flagrant differences between the housing and schools from one part of town to the next. Her desire to understand these differences and address them led her to a Bachelor of Architecture degree from Howard University and a Master of City Planning degree from the University of California Berkeley with a housing and community development emphasis. Upon graduating, she spent 6 years working on affordable and low-income housing developments, schools, day care facilities and recreation centers, many of which were in some of DC's most underserved communities. With a strengthened commitment to design equity in underserved communities, she founded The River East Design Center (REDC) in 2018. As a nonprofit community design center, REDC is a resource to communities that desire to learn more about architecture and planning and be active in development projects in their neighborhoods. After designing a mobile retail kiosk for one of the 11th Street Bridge Park's small business initiatives, Anna was invited to join the 11th Street Bridge Park team as their Senior Equitable Development. In this role, Anna oversees a series of programs designed to prevent displacement in communities surrounding the park by equipping residents and businesses to thrive in future economic changes. In these various capacities, Anna regularly leads workshops and discussions on community engagement, community centered design, and issues of diversity representation within the design professions. This work awarded her the honor of being a 2021 Public Interest Design Fellow with the DC Public Library and the Goethe Institute and the recipient 2023 Wieb Award for Architecture in the Public Interest. Anna is a resident of DC's Anacostia neighborhood and enjoys short runs along the Anacostia River, traveling anywhere she's never been and Sunday night funk music at JoJo 's Restaurant. Replaying our interview with Eva Baker AIA, LEED AP BD+C. Eva is an architect who specializes in laboratory planning. She is currently a Senior Associate and Director of the Philadelphia Office of HERA Laboratory Planners. We talk about: - Eva's pairing of a Bachelor degree in Chemistry with a Master's degree in Architecture so that she could combine two of her passions. - Whether she followed the advice of her mentors to focus on general architecture before diving into laboratory expertise. - I ask Eva what are the important components to consider when designing a lab including structural modules, safety, flexibility, MEP, and equipment and then we also talk about emerging trends in laboratory design like the integration of automation. - We discuss her long path to working at HERA and how consultancy functions differently than an architecture firm. - We talk about her favorite types of projects, skills she looks for when hiring, and how long it takes (spoiler- two years!) to become a lab specialist. - Eva also shares about the challenges she faced when she returned from maternity leave, had to balance office work and pumping, late nights working "parent hours", the constraints of childcare, and the societal and self-imposed stress of motherhood and career progression. - We end by talking about the importance of sharing responsibilities at home so that she and her partner can pursue meaningful careers as well as a successful family life. He directs the Climate Investment Solutions, Engineering, ESG and Sustainability consulting departments, offering services such as LEED/WELL/Fitwel consulting, Decarbonization/LCA assessments, Commissioning/RCx, Green Financing, Net Zero Proformas and GRESB/GRI/CDP reporting.    As a LEED Fellow, LEED AP BD+C, licensed Professional Engineer and Certified Building Commissioning Professional, Nick has led and overseen over 350 LEED projects and 150 energy studies across 150M+ square feet in multiple industries. Specializing in the integrated design process, decarbonization and deep retro-commissioning investigations, he enhances energy efficiency and staff training across projects and portfolios alike.    As a globally recognized public speaker, he's mentored and educated 10,000+ professionals and students. Additionally, as Co-Founder and Advisor at Aetos, he is pioneering cutting edge imaging technology to transform training and building operations in the digital age.   Show Highlights   Charlie interviews Nick + Asa after their recent LEED Fellow awards.   Understanding how design and buildings can affect a natural environment and affect a natural ecosystem.  Client engagement and the misconceptions that are still out there when it comes to LEED and a sustainable building. Recognizing your job as sustainability consultants to find the best outcome for clients and projects specific challenges.  Asa shares findings from the LEED Advancement Committee on common misconceptions around LEED. Emerging technology and trends that everyone should be applying to their businesses.  Current innovations to help you leverage technology to advance the efficiency of how you do things.  The evolution of LEED to grow and create a renewed focus on health, wellness, and buildings being designed, built and operated to be better for the environment. The crossover and current pathways to combine environmental performance and human performance.  Fundamental values and roles that keep us alive and keep us caring for our families. “We really need to kind of go back to our roots. We really need to focus on our local communities. A lot of what we do is try to get buy-in for why it's so important to care for the environment, care about the climate crisis and all these. When you kind of have an introspective and look at the community around everyone, we have to focus on the commonalities. What do we have in common? And I think we all care about our families. We all care about the food that we eat, the air that we breathe, the water that we drink. I think when you look at those fundamental values you can then start caring about why the environment plays a big role in those key things that keep us alive and keep us caring for our families. So then we can focus on helping our local communities and get that buy-in from people that may have different opinions from ourselves.” Nick Kassanis   “We've been tackling a lot of these myths and misconceptions, sort of debunking a lot of these LEED myths over the last several years. A lot of people think LEED is design driven, or maybe it's too rigid or it's only a coastal thing. It only shows up in New York and San Francisco. LEED takes too much time. We've even debunked the one about how a lot of people think LEED is only about earning a point for bike racks. An old misconception that's been around a long time. I particularly like the misconception that LEED costs too much. There's a whole lot of emphasis on and studies over many years about the cost of green building and what premiums exist through LEED and through green building projects. And that misconception, that myth just doesn't hold any water anymore.” -Asa Posner     Show Resource and Information Connect with Charlie Cichetti and GBES   GBES is excited our membership community is growing. That is what gets us jobs or brings repeated clients back. People start to trust you to design something for them that serves them, instead of being sort of an egoistic process. I think that part of it is missing from the conversation of business and Professional Practice.” - Nilou VakilTune in next week for a recap of the 2023 NCARB Scholars of Professional Practice.Guests:Nilou Vakil, AIA, LEED AP BD+C is the principal at in situ DESIGN and an Associate Professor of Architecture at KU School of Architecture and Design. Did you know that bathrooms and showers – particularly in shared spaces – are a veritable breeding ground for pathogen, some of which we see in the form of mold and the build-up of toxic bio films on surfaces. Body fats and soap scums provide a rich food sauce for micro-organisms such as airborne bacteria Serratia Marcescens, which thrive in humid conditions. We know that people with weakened immune systems are so much more vulnerable to the illnesses associated with infection and let's face it, none of us go into the shower with an expectation that we might get ill… So how do we keep those shower walls clean? Well let's think big – BIG TILES. Porcelanosa have developed XXL Hygienic Ceramic Tiles that are 5 feet long - which means just one piece fits the wall of a shower or tub surround. XTONE Porcelain slabs are 10 feet high which means a floor to ceiling surface with no joints. Why does this matter? Agree on solutions. Then assign to a leader to solve by a deadline Replace key leaders if they do not fit your strategy or culture When recruiting leaders ask yourself: Can they do the job? Esteban Martinez is an architect and civil engineer from the Universidad de los Andes.  He received his Master's Degree in Sustainable Design from the Boston Architectural College and complementary studies in Sustainable Urbanism from the Rotterdam School of Architecture. Esteban holds the following credentials: LEED AP BD&C, LEED AP O&M, GREEN RATER, and Certified Building Commissioning Professional from the Association of Energy Engineers.  Martinez is Co-Founder and Director of Sustainability at Green Loop, in Bogota, Colombia – South America where he brings his vast array of experience as a sustainability consultant, energy modeler, and commissioning agent. Esteban has worked on over 180 different projects located in Colombia, Brazil, Costa Rica, Ecuador and EEUU. In Colombia there are very few companies that develop sustainable architecture in every sense of the word. Most of them are exclusively limited to bioclimatic development, which represents only a small branch of sustainability in buildings. At an industrial level, most of the companies that work on ERUs are limited only to the analysis at the energy level, without going into the design and layout of buildings, and therefore the correct use of natural resources. By integrating the energy branch, with the design and rational use of other resources, it is possible to maximize the reduction of operational costs and therefore greater competitiveness of its products both nationally and internationally.   Show Highlights   Building in Latin America and mandates that are pushing efficiency. The benefits of a dual degree in engineering and architectural for bigger impact.  How a “fluke” started the whole green building movement in Colombia? Esteban's entrepreneurial journey to bringing LEED projects to Colombia. Energy simulations and  bio climatic analysis  throughout the world. A LEED gold rating system with less than 1% of extra costs.  Materials that adapt to what the environment is bringing.  The client looking at money is a good part of the sustainable equation. The impact Greenbuild has on your career.   “Remember that sustainability is about people, planet, and profit. If the profit is not there, your client will probably do the project that you're pursuing, but he will never do it again. If it doesn't make economical sense, it's not sustainable.” -Esteban Martinez Esteban Martinez Transcript   Esteban Martinez's Show Resource and Information   The Green Studio Handbook   LinkedIn Green Loop   Connect with Charlie Cichetti and GBES Charlie on LinkedIn Green Building Educational Services GBES on Twitter Connect on LinkedIn Like on Facebook Google+ GBES Pinterest Pins GBES on Instagram   GBES is excited our membership community is growing. David's other mentor was an urbanist and was a really good friend for over 20 years and first boss after college, Victor Dover. He works with CNU and urban design and urban planning.   “My parents have always had really good values in terms of having a notion of what's around me and the world.  And even my first few summer jobs that I had really good bosses that gave me really good examples of good work ethics and tried to leave a good legacy.” - David Rodriguez   Proudest Achievement One of David's proudest achievements was working in a hope six project, which was a social housing project in Tacoma, Washington.  The project won numerous awards both in sustainability and smart living. “I was the lead designer for that project when I was working in Washington DC and this is right before I left for Panama.  So I really felt proud that I ended up my 11 year stay in the US with something that left a legacy here.” - David Rodriguez   Palmer Green Building Council Founder When David first founded the Palmer Green Building Council they had around 4 LEED AP and had just come from the US with some experience.  Others had just received their certification. The only project that had been completed was the US Embassy by US staff and professional. “And what we find incredible is that nine years later we have a green building council that has about 130 members, both enterprises and people.  We have over 35 certified projects, some even high profile in terms of mags, laboratories, the general facilities. And you have a movement where we have been able to certify over a hundred people in terms of LEED green associates.” - David Rodriguez     Book Recommendations Hot, Flat and Crowded by Thomas Friedman The Original Green: Unlocking the Mystery of True Sustainability by Stephen A. Jason currently specializes in Sustainable Design, LEED, State and Federal Energy incentives and Grants, Carbon Neutrality planning & design, Energy Efficiency & Renewable Energy systems design, and implementation.     Aha Moment and Mentors In Jason's second year of college, he took the only class offered on sustainability.  The class focused on passive energy and this peaked his interest. Jason's high school architecture teacher Mr. Clayton was his first major influencer.  During his first real job, David Gibson gave him a platform and some significant projects to explore sustainability in high performance design. "When LEED came out, I saw it as a way to be a real good organization structure to talk to people about green buildings." – Jason Kliwinski   Advice and Words of Encouragement Jason wishes there would have been more green building education in his college years and early in his career.  He highly suggests that anyone in the field get as much hands-on experience as they can. He encourages everyone to always look out for the next wave in green buildings. "The way you really learn this stuff is by doing it." – Jason Kliwinski   Proudest Achievements & Favorite Books Jason Kliwinski was the first in his family to go to college and pay for it all. He is also proud of getting his architect license, being an early LEED adopter, and a LEED fellow. Another proud achievement is the creation of the Green Building Center. "If you haven't read these 5 books you don't really know the sustainability movement." – Jason Kliwinski   Jason suggests the following books: Cradle to Cradle:  Remaking the Way We Make Things by Bill McDonough and Michael Braungart Natural Capitalism by Paul Hawken The Green to Gold Business Playbook: How to Implement Sustainability Practices for Bottom-Line Results in Every Business Function by Daniel C.
