When David Wright went to Iraq as an 18-year-old soldier - he had no idea the battlefield would become a place where he'd enter deep states of bliss. For decades, David remained silent about the intense joy he experienced alongside the horrors of war. Matthew Syed ponders the extraordinary possibility of experiencing joy while suffering and hears more about the remarkable potential of the brain to respond to trauma in unexpected ways. He discovers how others too, like actor Renu Arora, experienced something similar when she was hit by a bus - and considers how such stories might help us shift our perspective on pain. With ex-soldier David Wright, actor/singer/writer Renu Arora, neuroscientist Dr Andrew Newberg, Director of Research at the Marcus Institute of Integrative Medicine at Thomas Jefferson University and Hospital in Philadelphia and Dr Steve Taylor, lecturer at Leeds Beckett University in transpersonal psychology and author of the book Extraordinary Awakenings. Time collapses, time expands. Steve Taylor studies and write books about the illusion of time embossed on our3D minds. Through the common spiritual awakenings many of you experience, we find a depth of connection to others and nature rarely available to our regular reality selves. During life threatening accidents and major falls time slows down, our minds expand to take into what we need to do to manage the crisis. These traumatic hints spotlight the limits of our linear time orientation. When you let go of the linearity to experience the interconnection of everything, you loosen the isolation of disconnection and join the worldwide movement toward collective spiritual awakening so desperately needed in these traumatic times. *This episode was originally uploaded to YouTube on November 17, 2024 * Join the Coincidence Project's Email List for weekly updates and events! https://thecoincidenceproject.net/ambassadors/bernard-beitman/ Steve Taylor PhD is the author of 16 books on psychology and spirituality, and is a senior lecturer in psychology at Leeds Beckett University. Get our latest psychology lectures emailed to your inbox: http://bit.ly/new-talks5 For 15 years, the transpersonal psychologist Steve Taylor has been researching cases of ‘transformation through turmoil,' or spontaneous spiritual awakening caused by suffering. In times of bereavement, serious illness, addiction, deep depression and intense stress, a miraculous transformation can occur: the death of an old identity and the birth of a new, spiritually awakened self. In this session based on his upcoming book Extraordinary Awakenings, Steve shares some cases from his research, and explains the reasons why intense suffering can lead to transformation. Then he explains what we can learn from the phenomenon, with principles that we can apply to our own spiritual development. He also explains the global and evolutionary aspects of the phenomenon, in relation to the crises we face as a species. Steve will also lead meditations and exercises to show how we can harness the transformational power of crises and turmoil in our lives. -- Steve Taylor, PhD, is the author of Extraordinary Awakenings and many other bestselling books including The Leap and Spiritual Science. Dr. Steven authored 13 books on psychology and spirituality, many of them already best-selling titles. In his latest "Extraordinary Awakenings," Dr. Steven shares dozens of stories from people who experienced a profound transformation, an awakening, after suffering trauma. Dr. Steven's truth is about acceptance, as in identifying when there is no option but to accept reality, learn to be in peace with it, and stop resisting. Our conversation revolves around Dr. Steven's discovery that after he faced his health issue and stopped running from it, the pain wasn't really that bad, and the suffering was more in what he thought he would feel than what he actually felt. We discuss the power of acceptance and how it can turn trauma into something beautiful. Dr. Stevens explained why he believes that not everyone who has traumatic experiences grows, and he shared the three steps to change trauma into truth. Why do some people who experience the worst that life has to offer respond not by breaking down but by shifting up, into a higher-functioning, awakened state? And perhaps more importantly, how can we emulate their transformations? Over many years of observing and studying the phenomenon of life-changing awakening through extreme suffering, psychologist Steve Taylor coined the term “transformation through turmoil (TTT).” He calls individuals whose struggles lead to a dramatic shift into a new, expansive identity “shifters” and in Extraordinary Awakenings: When Trauma Leads to Transformation (New World Library, September 14, 2021) he shares dozens of amazing stories of individuals who “woke up” to profound transformation following bereavement, deep depression, suicide attempts, addiction, military combat, imprisonment, or other intense encounters with mortality. “It is tremendously moving to hear accounts from people who have been to the furthest extremes of loss and suffering, who have faced the most desperate and desolate predicaments that human beings can possibly experience,” writes Taylor. “But even more than that it is inspiring that these people have risen so gloriously from the depths of their suffering and are now living such fulfilling and purposeful lives.” Along with the amazing stories of shifters he shares throughout the book, Taylor uncovers the psychological processes that help explain these miraculous awakenings. He also highlights a number of lessons and guidelines from the experiences of shifters and offers readers hope and guidance to call on during their own struggles. Steve Taylor, PhD, is the author of Extraordinary Awakenings and many other bestselling books. He's senior lecturer in psychology at Leeds Beckett University and the chair of the Transpersonal Psychology Section of the British Psychological Society. Steve's articles and essays have been published in over 100 academic journals, magazines, and newspapers and he blogs for Scientific American and Psychology Today. Extraordinary Awakenings: When Trauma Leads to Transformation Show Guest: Steve Taylor Why do some people who experience the worst that life has to offer respond not by breaking down but by shifting up, into a higher-functioning, awakened state? And perhaps more importantly, how can we emulate their transformations? Over many years of observing and studying the phenomenon of life-changing awakening through extreme suffering, psychologist Steve Taylor coined the term “transformation through turmoil (TTT).” He calls individuals whose struggles lead to a dramatic shift into a new, expansive identity - “shifters”. I'm joined by Steve Taylor to discuss the micro and macro qualities of awakening, and what Steve calls the panspirits worldview. Steve is a senior lecturer in psychology at Leeds Beckett University, and the author of several best-selling books on psychology and spirituality. These include Back to Sanity, The Leap, Spiritual Science, and his new book, Extraordinary Awakenings: When Trauma Leads to Transformation. Eckhart Tolle has described his work as ‘an important contribution to the shift in consciousness which is happening on our planet at present.' It's clear to why — the world desperately needs a different approach to nature, the self, and spirituality, in a way grounded in science. I found Steve's work early on in my awakening process and was inspired and relieved by the discoveries in science and psychology that support awakening. I've wanted to talk with him for years, and I was delighted to get the opportunity. The discussion covers the signs of awakening, including guidance for those on the path, as well as the research and discoveries of science that support these non-ordinary states, from NDEs to psi and beyond. Key talking points: What is transpersonal psychology? Steve explains his personal journey of awakening and how he thought he was crazy before discovering this new field of psychology. The definition of an awakening experience and the transcendence of separation. Connection as a fundamental reality. How trauma can lead to the dissolution of ego and transformation into a "higher self". Why the material worldview is a belief system based on unfounded assumptions. How this worldview impacts the environment and cultural nihilism. How scientism leads to cognitive bias and dismissal of evidence of findings outside of that worldview. The link between consciousness, quantum physics, and spirituality. How connection can help shift depression. Reassurance that spiritual experiences are not pathological, but normal. A few thoughts on the evolution of consciousness and how its manifesting in the world today. Steve's articles and essays have been published in over 100 academic journals, magazines, and newspapers, and he blogs for Scientific American and Psychology Today. For 15 years Steve has been researching cases of spontaneous spiritual awakening triggered by intense psychological turmoil. In times of intense stress, a miraculous transformation sometimes occurs: the death of an old identity and the birth of a new, spiritually awakened self. He explains why intense suffering can lead to spiritual growth. He offers insights from his research, along with actionable principles that we can apply to our own spiritual development. Whether or not turmoil leads to a breakthrough depends on a person's attitude towards their predicament If bitterness and resentment, the trauma is just suffering But if you face reality, then embrace and accept it, it can lead to breakthrough Particular experiences have the potential to awaken you Bereavement often gives rise to transformation Four different areas in which our awareness expands during a spiritual awakening Four-step process of responding to suffering and turmoil to help harness their transformational power Going into our own inner space Collective trauma Guest Website: https://www.stevenmtaylor.com/ Host Website: http://www.dawsongift.com/ #eft #eftuniverse #awakening #trauma #transformation #mindtomatter #blissbrain

In the first in a series of conversations with some of the "shifters" featured in my book Extraordinary Awakenings, I speak to Zak Khan, who underwent an amazing transformational experience while seriously ill with cancer. Zak died for a short time, and his description of the dying process is profound and inspiring. His encounter with death brought about a spiritual awakening that changed his life radically. He has lost all fear of death, and has faced his ongoing health challenges with acceptance.

I began to be more and more interested in Transpersonal psychology. I did a Ph.D. in Transpersonal psychology and I realized it was where my soul as a whole in studying spirituality. (05:21)A spiritual awakening is an expansion and an intensification of awareness, sometimes that's interpreted in the concept of spiritual traditions. (9:31)Most addicts got a history of trauma, usually childhood trauma, physical, sexual abuse during childhood, or emotional deprivation during childhood. I think that is often the root of the addiction. In a way what they're trying to do with that trauma, they're trying to medicate themselves dealing with that trauma. (16:29)I found out in my research that around two-thirds of people experienced these kinds of after-death communications, sometimes a very direct, sometimes an interaction, sometimes like voice, often a smell, sometimes symbolic communications. (25:58)There are actually two kinds of near-death experience. (26:39)Ego dissolution can take place through intense stress or through a long process of loss and detachment.
