My name is Marina A. Smirnova. I was born on Sakhalin Island (the Far East of Russia), and, well over twenty years ago, I made the U.S.A. my home. My journey has been enriched by earning a Bachelor degree in Music Education (Minsk State Pedagogical University, 1996), a Master of Arts degree in Counseling (Central Michigan University, 2003), and a PhD degree in Psychology, with Transpersonal Psychology Concentration (Sofia University, formerly Institute of Transpersonal Psychology, 2013). I started my teaching path at the age of 18 as a K-12 music teacher. In 2013, I began my contribution to Saybrook University. In 2016, I became an Assistant Program Director for the Department of Humanistic and Clinical Psychology; in 2017-an Interim Psychology Chair. Currently, as a core faculty member of the Department of Humanistic Psychology at Saybrook, I serve as a Full Professor of Psychology and Consciousness, Spirituality, and Integrative Health (CSIH) Specialization Director. I am a recipient of two recent Saybrook University awards: Presidential Award for Excellence (November 2021) and Exemplary Humanistic Educator Award (August 2024). My interests are deeply humanistic and transpersonal in nature. Outside of the halls of academia, I support adults' inner development by helping them to integrate fully their deeply evocative, Exceptional Human Experiences (EHEs). Such experiences often arise within and out of dreams, visions, visitations, spiritual practices, breathwork, visionary journeys, and reality-shattering UFO /ET /Alien /Non-Human Intelligences encounters. I support experiencers transpersonally in their quests for spiritual vitality, fulfillment, vibrant longevity, soulful sovereignty, wholeness, and ascension. I have a deep sense of appreciation for contemplative spirituality, mystical and esoteric traditions, and contemplative practices, and my current overarching focus is on exploring, potentiating, and integrating Exceptional Experiences (EEs) and Exceptional Human Experiences (EHEs), in general, and reality-shattering UFO /ET /Alien / Non-Human Intelligences encounters, in particular. My heart-centered art and interests include: (1) intuitive spiritual support and guidance; (2) transpersonal ways of knowing, embodiment, ascension mentoring, and spiritual consultation; (3) extreme, deeply evocative, and visionary transpersonal/holotropic states; (4) John E. Mack's transpersonal research on UFO / ET /Alien encounters and human transformation; (5) Stan Grof's expanded cartography of the psyche, holotropic states of consciousness, and GROF® Breathwork / Holotropic Breathwork®; (6) C.G. Jung's transpersonal legacy, Joe Campbell's heroic journey, and James Hillman's acorn theory; (7) psionics, remote viewing, mythology and personal mythology, dreamwork, guided imagery, clinical hypnosis, and alchemy of ascension; (8) consciousness calibration work by David R. Hawkins, (9) the biology of personal empowerment by Bruce H. Lipton; (10) Enneagram; (11) Gene Keys and Dream Arc (by Richard Rudd); (12) indigenous traditions and heart-centered spirituality; and (13) other embodied spiritual approaches that engage inner resources to optimize soulful sovereignty, fulfillment, vibrant longevity, joy, and ascension. Applying neuroscience and psychology to education and formation, pioneering researcher Dr. Mary Helen Immordino-Yang draws connections between emotions, relationships, brains, stories, meaning, and purpose to shed light on how we learn, grow, and thrive. Her research on the brain shows how we're woven together in an intricate and glorious network of life, and when we synthesize the neurological, the psychological, the physical, and the social, we're able to come to a deeper and more impactful understanding of human development and flourishing. From the intricacies of adolescent brain development to the emotional and spiritual scaffolding of a meaningful life, she explains how transcendent thinking, story, and emotional engagement fuel identity formation and long-term flourishing. Drawing from cutting-edge research and humanistic insight, she explores how young people co-create their worlds and how adults can support them in becoming adaptive, wise, and agentic. In this conversation with Mary Helen Immordino-Yang, we discuss:The value of integrating neuroscience with educational, emotional, and moral developmentThe strange and glorious case of the adolescent brain—how we mature, learn how to think, feel, and exercise our agency, and strive to become wiseThe emotional and relational nature of education and moral development—expressed in nurturing conversation between caring adults and youthThe importance of agency, intentionality, and transcendent thinking in human thrivingNeural plasticity and the capacity to change our brains throughout our lifespanAnd, the big picture of thriving, that brings together our mental life, neurobiology, and other physical processes—with relationships, community, and society at large.Episode Highlights"Thriving is really about living like you mean it.""We co-construct one another's lived experiences by the virtue of being there together.""You learn how to have an instinct—it's not something you're just born with.""Transcendent thinking literally grows the adolescent brain.""Meaning-making is an abstraction, a transcendent story we construct to bring coherence to our lives."Show NotesThriving as dynamic, purposeful engagementEmotional experiences shaping brain developmentCo-construction of identity in social relationshipsAdolescence as a time of neurodevelopmental remodelingHow transcendent thinking fosters brain growth over timeAdolescents' drive for deeper moral and ethical narrativesMeaning-making as a tool for personal and societal transformationLinking personal experience with historical and social narrativesDefault mode network and its role in reflection and creativityFrom instinct to insight—how the brain learns to feelThe relationship between emotional health and physical well-beingGut-brain connection, serotonin, and embodied cognitionTranscendence as a cognitive-emotional developmental milestoneInfluence of media, anxiety, and political division on adolescent mindsBrain-based evidence of narrative engagement growing identityLearning to align present feelings with long-term purposeBrain science dismantling the myth of "subjective = unimportant"Agency, presence, and intentionality in thrivingIntegration of neuroscience with humanistic and applied methodsRole of narrative in therapy, art, education, and spiritualityHow adolescents learn to feel, not just what to thinkCulturally-rooted belief systems shaping neural responsesThe importance of reflection, introspection, and deep conversationAdolescents' innate capacity for moral concern and big-picture thinkingLearning through story: case studies in adolescent empathyReclaiming agency from external cultural and tech influencesIdentity as a lifelong, evolving narrative—not a fixed outcomeGrowth as intentional reflection, not cognitive accelerationSpiritual wellness as iterative construction of meaning and valuesParenting and mentoring for deep reflective growthAdaptive wisdom: balancing immediacy with long-term visionSigns of flourishing: self-liking, relationship quality, agencyImportance of diverse experiences and safe, supportive relationshipsAdults thriving through neuroplasticity and meaning-makingThe lifelong role of story and belief in shaping purposeCognitive engagement and values-based direction over passive successEmotional safety and time as prerequisites for transcendenceListening, asking why, and welcoming the unknown as virtues of thrivingPam King's Key TakeawaysBrain science isn't better or worse than other perspectives on human life, but it offers incredible insight for how we grow and thrive.Stories and narratives are the essential threads that hold our lives together; how you think and the story you're telling yourself matters for your thriving.Education isn't just a cognitive process. Our emotions and our bodies and our sense of connection and safety in relationships play a central role in learning.Spiritual health connects how our transcendent thinking informs our identity and how we live in reciprocity with the world beyond ourselvesThriving involves an agile agency that helps us live with skill and intentionality—so “live like you mean it.”About Mary Helen Immordino-YangMary Helen Immordino-Yang is the Fahmy and Donna Attallah Professor of Humanistic Psychology at the University of Southern California. I grew up in West Virginia, where I first fell in love with nature, acting, music, and the performing arts. Though my wanderlust had me yearning for worldly exposure, travel, exploring bigger cities and greener pastures, (which I eagerly did), the arts culture in my hometown was incredibly rich, and the experiences I had during my formative years were invaluable. Some of my closest friends today are the same people I grew up exploring and playing with onstage as a kid.Beginning around the age of 8, I would re-enact my favorite movies in the backyard, roping my sister and best friend into my imaginative worlds. Even then, I was fascinated by dissecting the characters in a story, trying to understand the emotions behind them. It was my first connection to acting and psychology. Early on I understood that acting wasn't about pretending—it was about finding the truth. This passion for understanding people led me to earn a Bachelor's in Theatre Arts in Acting, a Master's in Psychology, and embark on a PhD in Humanistic Psychology, where my research focuses on the mental wellness and boundaries of performing artists, challenging the romanticized notion of the starving artist, advocating instead for the option of a thriving, balanced life.My love for storytelling extends beyond the stage and screen into the realm of wellness. As a certified Integrative Wellness Coach & Energy Healer, I help clients achieve balance and clarity by blending creative insights with holistic practices. I believe that our stories shape us, and connecting with our true narrative is essential for living an authentic, fulfilling life.In addition, I host the Top 3% Podcast Unconditioning: Discovering the Voice Within where I've interviewed hundreds of guests about following their inner authentic voice and intuition. This rich catalog of wisdom not only serves as qualitative research but aids me to help anyone—artists and non-artists alike—align with their true selves and their authentic stories.Whether I'm delivering a soliloquy, presenting a research paper, or sharing insights from podcast guests, my passions for the creative arts and psychology continually inform and enrich one another. It's all part of the grand performance that is my life—a sophisticated and whimsical blend of drama, intellect, and a touch of W(h)it.   www.whitneyannjenkins.com  www.instagram.com/whitneyannjenkins www.instagram.com/unconditoningpodcast

Click here to enroll: https://lectern.teachable.com/p/einstein-and-spinoza-s-god1 “What does it really mean to be authentic, and can this virtue be meaningfully understood and measured across psychology and philosophy?” John Vervaeke, Gregg Henriques and Matthew Schaublin embark on a discussion covering the concept of authenticity. The discussion explores authenticity as one of the premier virtues of modernity, comparing it with autonomy, and tracing its roots through romanticism and existentialism, notably discussing Heidgegger and Kierkegaard. Greg introduces psychological perspectives and client-centered therapy influenced by Carl Rogers, while Matthew shares insights from his empirical research on dispositional authenticity carried out at the University of Chattanooga. The trio also touch on the tensions between self-identification and participation, self-alienation, cognitive fluency, and the societal quest for authenticity, proposing a nuanced and dynamic understanding of the true self. Gregg R. Henriques is an American psychologist. He is a professor for the Combined-Integrated Doctoral Program at James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Virginia, US. Matthew Schaublin is a master's candidate in psychology at the University of Chattanooga, with a four-year research focus on authenticity. Welcome back to The Mind Mate Podcast! Today, I have the absolute honour of sitting down with Dr. Kirk Schneider—one of the leading voices in contemporary existential-humanistic psychology and a true pioneer in the field of depth-oriented healing. Dr. Schneider has an impressive career that spans decades. He's a licensed psychologist, the past editor of the Journal of Humanistic Psychology, and president of the Existential-Humanistic Institute. He teaches at Saybrook University and Columbia University's Teachers College and is a Fellow of five divisions of the American Psychological Association. Beyond that, he's a prolific author, having written or coauthored 12 books, including The Paradoxical Self, Horror and the Holy, Existential-Integrative Psychotherapy, and Awakening to Awe. Today, we'll touch on his latest contribution, Life-Enhancing Anxiety: Key to a Sane World, which offers a global perspective on existential approaches to healing and transformation. What's striking about Dr. Schneider's work is how deeply it calls us to engage with life's mysteries—the awe, the terror, and the paradoxes that shape the human experience. He's also the founder of the Corps of Depth Healers, a movement designed to bring depth-oriented, existential practices to communities in need. It's a radical and necessary initiative in our increasingly fragmented world, and I'm excited to explore it with him today. If you're as fascinated as I am, I highly recommend diving into Dr. Schneider's world. Visit his website at www.kirkjschneider.com for more about his work and writings. Time collapses, time expands. Steve Taylor studies and write books about the illusion of time embossed on our3D minds. Through the common spiritual awakenings many of you experience, we find a depth of connection to others and nature rarely available to our regular reality selves. During life threatening accidents and major falls time slows down, our minds expand to take into what we need to do to manage the crisis. These traumatic hints spotlight the limits of our linear time orientation. When you let go of the linearity to experience the interconnection of everything, you loosen the isolation of disconnection and join the worldwide movement toward collective spiritual awakening so desperately needed in these traumatic times. *This episode was originally uploaded to YouTube on November 17, 2024 * Join the Coincidence Project's Email List for weekly updates and events! https://thecoincidenceproject.net/ambassadors/bernard-beitman/ Steve Taylor PhD is the author of 16 books on psychology and spirituality, and is a senior lecturer in psychology at Leeds Beckett University. In this podcast episode, host Dr. Natalie Lancer is joined by Angie Belcher, Harriet Beveridge and Stuart Goldsmith to explore the intersection of humour and coaching. Angie, a comedian and comedy educator, shares her experience using stand-up as a therapeutic tool for diverse groups, including men at risk of suicide and army veterans. Harriet, a corporate coach, key-note speaker and stand-up comedian, discusses humour's role in offering new perspectives and building rapport. Stuart, a corporate speaker on the Climate Crisis and Resilience gives us insights on using humour to facilitate personal growth and cultural change. We discuss: How can you use humour in coaching? Where is the intersection between comedy and coaching? How can comedy be used to build rapport? In what ways can comedy be used as a therapeutic or coaching tool? What's the link between comedy and trauma? How do you coach people to learn comedy?  What is the purpose of humour and making people laugh? How are psychological models used in comedy? How can we use comedy to help people take a different perspective?  What can we learn from comedians about vulnerability, resilience and authenticity? There are many transferable skills we can take from comedy to enhance our coaching practice such as relationship building and creating psychological safety. Furthermore, working with comedy can help clients reframe risk and failure and cultivate their ability to get into a peak performance state. We also explore the role of comedy in a variety of settings including building new mothers' confidence and working with NHS patients, army veterans and men at risk of suicide. This episode is sponsored by BetterHelp.  For Andrew LeCompte, his study of A Course in Miracles (ACIM) started off like the proverbial ‘good thing' of so many cult survivor stories. He eventually taught ACIM in Mexico, Spain, Hawaii, and Canada–working as something like a NXIVM-era Mark Vicente for his teacher. He initially had amazing experiences and believed he was on track to finding the ‘Love of God.' But after six years of mistreatment, emotional manipulation, and being coerced out of over $200,000, the biggest miracle is that he got out and recovered his life. His memoir, Finding Miracles: Escape from a Cult, is a cautionary tale for seekers everywhere. We're talking to Andrew today about his experience, what drew him to ACIM, where it all went cattywampus, and how he only found the love he'd been looking for after he escaped. SHOW NOTES: About Andrew LeCompte: With a master's degree in Humanistic Psychology in Organizations, Andrew developed a deeper method of interpersonal communication, which involves tapping into each person's emotions and what they are most hoping for. He then taught empathic speaking and listening skills to people in schools, colleges, civic groups, legal practices, hospitals, pharmaceutical and financial corporations. As President of the Let's Talk training group he led leadership programs, and additionally practiced management and organizational development. Andrew wrote a book summarizing this way of communicating: Creating Harmonious Relationships: a Practical Guide to the Power of True Empathy (2000). The book sold out and was translated into Turkish. A new revised edition has just been published! In the spiritual realm, Andy began meditating in the 1970s. In the 1990 he began studying the spiritual text, A Course in Miracles (ACIM). In 2004 he met the man who would become his ACIM guru/teacher. Andy discussed key points of ACIM with his wife, a clinical psychologist, who was not in agreement with a spiritually focused life. In 2011, Andy left his wife, son, friends, and all his possessions behind and moved 2,000 miles into his guru's ACIM-based community. There he contributed his teaching and counseling skills, plus his book editing and video editing skills. He moved with the cult to Spain, Hawaii, Canada,  and Mexico. But after six grueling years he realized it was a cult and escaped with the help of his loving son. Cult psychology is a pernicious force. With the help and love of his family, psychotherapists and psychiatrists, Andrew engaged in an intensive recovery programs, which was completely successful. After researching cults and cult psychology, he wrote Finding Miracles: Escape from a Cult. In this episode, I speak with Dave about his journey to becoming the first podcaster in the field of psychology and his prolific career publishing over a 1,000 interviews. Dave explained that he had learned about podcasting very early on and it fit with his interest in radio, which, as a teenager, he got involved with amateur radio, had taken the FCC exams, and built his own components. This lead him to go to college to study electrical engineering, but he quickly learned that his high school had not prepared him for an engineering major. He said he took a Psychology 101 course, but it was completely focused on behaviorism, which turned him off to the field, and instead got a degree in creative writing. At the end of college, he explained that a friend told him he was studying to become a Rogerian psychologist, which sounded interesting, and Dave had always enjoyed helping people with their problems, so he took an abnormal Psychology class, and then went to graduate school for a doctorate in psychology. Dave discussed how his graduate school was focused on psychoanalytic theory, which he didn't find to be a good fit for him, so he gravitated more towards Humanistic Psychology. He discussed running encounter groups and we discussed the Human Potential Movement in the 60s and how he and others were seeking alternative perspectives. He explained that he had published articles in the Human Behavior journal and after learning about podcasting, thought that interviewing his fellow professors at Sonoma. State University where he met, which was Humanistically focused, would be a great way to begin his program Shrink Rap Radio and Wise Counsel. We discussed that during the 80s, when personal computers were becoming more popular, he became interested in the tech and business world, and began doing market research focus groups, and used online focus groups in the early days of the internet. He continued this work while he taught, had a psychotherapy practice and all of these skills assisted him in his podcast interviews. He explained that he challenged himself to be open to a wide variety of perspective, interviewing a broad range of clinicians and non-clinicians. Dave lastly discussed his interest in Positive Psychology and how he saw it as an outgrowth of Humanistic psychotherapy, and how Positive Psychology's coaching aspects have been adopted in the business world. David Van Nuys, Ph.D. is past-chair and professor emeritus in Psychology at Sonoma State University, a department with an international reputation for humanistic, existential, and transpersonal psychology. He also taught at the University of Montana, the University of Michigan, and the University of New Hampshire. In addition, David runs a market research business, e-FocusGroups, which has served a distinguished list of clients, including The New York Times, Apple Computer, IBM, Hewlett Packard, and QuickenLoans, among others. He leads personal growth workshops at various growth centers around the U.S. and abroad. David earned his doctorate in clinical psychology from the University of Michigan and has worked as a licensed psychotherapist in both New Hampshire and California. A frequent public speaker, he has also published in professional journals, popular magazines, and co-authored a book on the infamous Zodiac serial killer. He also produces two popular podcasts: Shrink Rap Radio and Wise Counsel. David is a longtime dreamworker himself and a past IASD presenter and for many years taught a course on Myth, Dream, and Symbol at Sonoma State University. In 2018, he received an award from the American Psychological Association for his pioneering podcast, Shrink Rap Radio. The award was presented at Harvard University by the APA president before a crowd of several hundred educational podcasters. Since 2005, he has conducted around one thousand interviews with movers and shakers around the broad world of psychology (including dreamworkers , dream researchers, and Jungian analysts).

I have been blessed by Humanistic Psychology, but I have also come to certain convictions concerning the place of psychology in the life of a disciple who seeks to be formed into the image of Christ. In summary, I find Psychology at times can be a wonderful servant of the Lord Jesus Christ, but when psychology begins telling people what to believe, value, and do, she becomes a tyrant. “The psychological man is born to be pleased.” “The disciple is reborn to be faithful.” Come join us as we explore the relationship of the biblical vision of the human person to the therapeutic vision.

Dr. Raja David spent his infancy in a residential treatment center--seriously! Today we learn from Dr. David about Therapeutic Assessment or TA, which is totally different from the usual psychological testing and diagnosis methods you learn in graduate school (AKA Your IQ is X, your diagnosis is Y, and we recommend CBT; mk, thanks, bye.) TA offers a much appreciated humanistic, experiential perspective. It's a process for helping people figure out what's going on in their lives, and "hand[ing[ that info back to them in a digestible way", so that "insight is LIVED, not just cognitively grasped".It just so happens that this approach to evaluating humans is evidence-based, too. It's a win-win for everyone, really, and we hope you'll appreciate the shift in perspective, even if you're in a setting where committing to a full TA model is hard.Bio:Dr. Raja David is the founder and owner of the Minnesota Center for Collaborative/Therapeutic Assessment, where he conducts Therapeutic Assessments with adolescents and adults. He is a former assistant professor and has taught doctoral level courses and professional workshops, and co-wrote what is essentially the adult TA manual. He consults with others about TA and conducting psychological assessments, and is a member of the Therapeutic Assessment Institute board of directors.Honorable Mentions:Dr. David's private practice web site: https://www.mnccta.com/What is TA?
