Why Leaves Change: The Science and Beauty of Fall Color

In this fall-themed episode, hosts Alexis, Brett, Jessica, and Ray (the “Plant People”) celebrate the season with a mix of food talk, laughter, and horticultural insights. They kick things off sharing their favorite pumpkin-inspired treats— from homemade pumpkin bread to smoked butternut mac and cheese and even pumpkin tortilla chips. The conversation transitions into the episode's main topic: fall leaf color in Kentucky and beyond. The group discusses the science behind color change — how cool nights, warm days, and moderate moisture bring out the best reds, oranges, and yellows. Ray explains how a good growing season followed by a slightly dry fall concentrates sugars in leaves, leading to vibrant anthocyanin-driven reds. They also talk about the impact of Kentucky's record-dry August, wondering how it might affect 2025's color display.Listeners learn about useful resources like the ExploreFall.com foliage map and Kentucky Tourism's fall color tracker, which show when and where to find peak color. The hosts share personal sightings — from maples just beginning to turn to the rich reds of burning bush and sassafras — and discuss how elevation, frost timing, and species type influence local color patterns. The team also dives into some fascinating plant physiology, explaining how the green pigment chlorophyll fades to reveal yellows and oranges already present in leaves, while reds form later from sugar accumulation. Their side conversation about variegation and plant adaptation connects the science of leaf color to everyday gardening. The episode wraps up with everyone's appreciation for leaf-peeping season, favorite scenic drives, and plans to visit Kentucky's Red River Gorge and other colorful fall spots.Explore FallKentucky Tourism Fall Color TrackerThe 2025 Fall Foliage Prediction MapQuestions/Comments/Feedback/Suggestions for Topics: hortculturepodcast@gmail.comCheck us out on Instagram!

How Trees Know When to Turn: The Science of Fall Color

Minnesota Gardening Podcast

The leaves don't wait for frost—they're already counting the night. We dive into the quiet timing system inside trees that decides when the colors ignite, why some years burst into crimson while others fizzle to brown, and how weather and latitude shape the show right above our heads. It's a guided tour of photoperiodism, phytochromes, and the pigments that paint fall—carotenoids hiding under summer's green and anthocyanins that arrive late to set maples and oaks on fire.We break down how plants measure darkness rather than just daylight, why the red vs. far‑red balance matters, and what “cool nights, sunny days” really does to sugars in leaves. Then we follow the story to its elegant conclusion: the abscission zone, a microscopic tear line that lets a tree reclaim nutrients and drop each leaf cleanly. Along the way, we connect the science to practical gardening—how healthy soil, reduced chemical use, and smart fall cleanup can protect pollinators, save water, and set up stronger color displays next year. This is a nerdy, satisfying look at the biology behind peak color season, told through the lens of our Minnesota landscapes and the broader mission to build resilient, pesticide-free yards. If you've ever wondered how trees “know” when to turn, or why reds pop only in certain years, you'll come away with answers and a toolkit of simple, high-impact steps you can put to work at home. Subscribe, share with a friend who chases leaf-peeping weekends, and leave a review to help more neighbors find the show—and consider joining our community to grow healthier landscapes together.Join Minnesota Gardening as a member today for just $77 a season (this promotion ends today!)--> Click here to join for $77 a season.

Send us a textNote: A video version is available on YouTube. Please send us a Message!Sand that moves like a stormy sea, a creek that sings under aspen fire, and a ridge that widens the world—this Mosca Pass hike delivers more than a modest mile count suggests. We start at Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve, trace Mosca Creek through shifting meadows and timber, and climb a steady grade toward a saddle lined in late-September gold. Along the way, we pause at a rock marker to unpack pioneer footsteps and revisit Zebulon Pike's vivid line about dunes as waves, then follow the faint bones of an old toll road that once pulled wagons over the range before a 1911 washout rewrote the route. At the top, Mosca Pass opens into color: aspens flaring across the ridge, a meadow catching light, and the San Luis Valley stretching under a high, clean sky. We trade route notes—3.7 miles to the pass, about 850 feet of gain, two hours at a leisurely pace—and share small, practical wins like letting the creek set your rhythm and stopping often to look back at the dunes below. The contrast is the point here. The desert gives way to forest, history brushes against wilderness, and a gentle trail still finds a way to feel expansive. On the descent, an abandoned truck stirs a round of theories, and the old road's profile tells a quiet story about water and time.If you're scouting Colorado hikes with fall color, moderate effort, and real payoff, Mosca Pass belongs on your list. Come for the views and stay for the textures: the hiss of meadow grass, the cool draw by the creek, the sudden hush in the trees. Watch, share your best guess about the truck's fate, and tell us your favorite shoulder-season hike. If you enjoy the journey, tap 'subscribe,' hit the thumbs up, and share this episode with a friend who needs an easy win with a panoramic finish. Support the show

You may remember our podcasts with Tami Asars, and her dramatic tales live from the Appalachian Trail as she completed the Triple Crown of backpacking. Pacific Crest Trail, Continental Divide Trail, and The Appalachian Trail. Just looking up the mileage on those will give you blisters. Tami never rests. She has a new book out, "Fall Color Hikes: Washington". We delve deeper into the rewards of becoming one with nature on the trails. And also snakes, bears, and other wild animals. My cohost for this podcast is filmmaker author, lifelong friend and hiking buddy Steve Stockman. You'll like his dry sense of humor and his book and video course “How To Shoot Video That Doesn't Suck”. These pop up podcasts are a bright spot for me these days, as some of you know I'm getting some chemo treatments to keep the big C at bay. It's all good, we all know someone going through it… So if I seem a little fatigued and leaning back in my chair, or miss a week, that's why. Kudos to Michael McMorrow productions and our beloved David Lee for the stellar work adding graphics and postproduction to make these latest interviews shine. Enjoy. And thank you for watching and listening. Bob https://www.amazon.com/Fall-Color-Hikes-Tami-Asars/dp/1680513052 Listening to the audio on Podcast Service?
