Jeff Nania, "River Gold: A Northern Lakes Mystery" (Feet Wet Writing, 2025)

In River Gold (Feed Wet Writing, 2025) Sheriff John Cabrelli is pulled into a murder investigation after a nationally known Great Lakes historian is robbed of his briefcase and shot in the leg. When the only suspect is killed in a hit and run, Cabrelli is hard pressed to pick up the threads of his investigation. Every lead about cryptic journals and lost gold coins goes nowhere because the historian won't explain anything. Meanwhile, Cabrelli is up for reelection and a rival keeps distracting him from doing his job. This is a small-town mystery about living with nature, appreciating the Wisconsin landscape, enjoying time for fishing, and about stolen gold, hidden evil, and buried secrets in the Northwoods. Jeff Nania is a former law enforcement officer, writer, conservationist, and biofuel creator. He is the award-winning author of five books in the Northern Lakes Mystery series; Figure Eight, Spider Lake, Bough Cutter, Musky Run, and now River Gold. His narrative non-fiction writing has appeared in Wisconsin Outdoor News, Double Gun Journal, The Outlook, and other publications. Jeff was born and raised in Wisconsin. His family settled in Madison's storied Greenbush neighborhood. His father often loaded Jeff, his brothers, and a couple of dogs into an old jeep station wagon and set out for outdoor adventures. These experiences were foundational for developing a sense of community, a passion for outdoor traditions, and a love of our natural resources. Jeff has been recognized locally, statewide, and nationally. Outdoor Life Magazine named him as one of the nation's 25 most influential conservationists, and he received the National Wetlands Award for his wetland restoration work. The Wisconsin Senate commended Jeff with a joint resolution for his work with wetlands, education, and as a non-partisan advisor on natural resource issues. Now a full-time novelist, Jeff spends as much time as possible exploring outdoor Wisconsin with his friends and family, and fishing Spider Lake. Learn more about your ad choices. Studebakers at Indy (Andrew Beckman)

BREAK/FIX the Gran Touring Motorsports Podcast

While “Studebaker” is rarely the first name one thinks of when discussing motorsports, the company had a strong yet brief presence at the Indianapolis 500 in the early 1930s. Studebaker laid the groundwork with the introduction of the President's inline eight-cylinder engine in early 1928. The advent of the Indianapolis 500's 1930 rule changes opened the door for production-based entries, and the President's rugged eight powered a pair of private entries. These Studebaker-engined specials showed promise and led to the development of Studebaker's corporate team. This program will detail the origins and evolution of Studebaker-powered racers beginning in 1930 with a special emphasis on the company's factory-backed campaigns in 1932 and 1933. Additional focus will also be placed on the technical development of the Studebaker racers as well as the post-Studebaker disposition of the team cars and their present-day status. Sources include Studebaker's corporate archives and image collection at the Studebaker National Museum plus period publications and race accounts. Additional data is drawn from secondary sources profiling the Studebaker team plus owner research compiled during their stewardship of the cars. Andrew Beckman has been with the Studebaker National Museum since 1999 and currently serves as Archivist. He previously worked at the Sheboygan County Historical Society in Sheboygan, Wisconsin, and the Wade House State Historic Site in Greenbush, Wisconsin. Mr. Beckman hails from Manitowoc, Wisconsin, and holds a BA in History from the University of Wisconsin- Green Bay. In 2004, he completed the Modern Archives Institute at the National Archives and Records Administration in Washington, D.C. In 2009, he earned his mid-level certificate in Collections Preservation from the Campbell Center for Historic Preservation Studies in Mount Carroll, Illinois. Mr. Beckman is the author of The Studebaker National Museum: Over a Century on Wheels, and Studebaker's Last Dance: The Avanti, and is a columnist for the Studebaker Drivers Club magazine, Turning Wheels. In addition to his duties at the Studebaker National Museum, Mr. Beckman is a member and Past President of the Society of Automotive Historians. He also serves as a commentator for The Henry Ford Museum's Motor Muster and Old Car Fest. ===== (Oo---x---oO) ===== 00:00 Studebaker's Early Motorsports Involvement 01:27 Andrew Beckman's Background 02:51 Studebaker's Racing Philosophy 04:32 Studebaker's Early Racing History 09:50 The President 8 and Racing Innovations 13:19 Studebaker at the Indianapolis 500 17:00 The 1932 and 1933 Racing Campaigns 20:50 The Elusive Studebaker Straight 8 Block 21:01 Studebaker's Racing Legacy 22:29 The 1933 Indianapolis 500 23:14 Privateers and Unique Entries 25:14 Studebaker's Financial Struggles 25:30 The End of Factory-Backed Racing 26:16 Studebaker's Continued Influence 27:03 The Last of the Studebaker Racers 28:55 Restoration and Legacy 32:05 Q&A Session 35:54 Sponsors and Closing Remarks ==================== The Motoring Podcast Network : Years of racing, wrenching and Motorsports experience brings together a top notch collection of knowledge, stories and information. #everyonehasastory #gtmbreakfix - motoringpodcast.net More Information: https://www.motoringpodcast.net/ Become a VIP at: https://www.patreon.com/gtmotorsports Online Magazine: https://www.gtmotorsports.org/ This episode is part of our HISTORY OF MOTORSPORTS SERIES and is sponsored in part by: The International Motor Racing Research Center (IMRRC), The Society of Automotive Historians (SAH), The Watkins Glen Area Chamber of Commerce, and the Argetsinger Family - and was recorded in front of a live studio audience.

Once called "Madison's Ellis Island," the Greenbush neighborhood used to be home to large populations of Italian, Jewish, and Black residents. But an urban revival plan in the mid-20th century decimated the neighborhood and displaced its communities. Now, the area is witnessing a revival. Spots like Leopold's, Fabiola's, and the Greenbush Bar are new staples of Madison's Greenbush neighborhood, so for this special installment of Must See Madison, host Bianca Martin and executive producer Hayley Sperling talk to the owner of all three, Sam Brown, about the neighborhood's past, present, and future.  Wanna talk to us about an episode? Rebbetzin Nechama Dina Laber is the co-director of the Jewish Greenbush Retreat Campus, and also of the Chabad of Greenbush and Southern Rensselaer County. She is also the founder and director of the Jewish Girls Retreat and Jewish Girls Unite, as well as the GROW Connection Network global online community for girls and women. Rebbetzin Nechama Dina is a certified life coach and the author of several books, including GROW Through Prayer and 3 GROW planners. In this deep and profound interview, Rebbetzin Nechama Dina shares with us her effective GROW method for meaningful prayer, and for living a meaningful life. She encourages us to be a spark of light that illuminates the darkness, and she teaches us how to do it through the GROW method. GROW G: Gratitude, which corresponds with the prayer of Birkat Ha Shahar. With gratitude, we open our heart to connection. Even if we are struggling with a challenge, we can be grateful to be alive. R: Recognition, which corresponds to the prayers of Pesuki d'Zimrah. In this step, we process gratitude in more detail. We recognize what is going on in our world, and we open our heart to connection. We realize the divinity is in the details. O: Oneness, which corresponds to the Shema prayer. Hashem (G-d) is one. Everything has the oneness of Hashem inside of it, including our challenges. He wants us to find him. Through oneness, we create an action step. We think, "What does Hashem want from me at this time?" We take on one small action. Hashem is our partner in every situation in live, and He guides us. Through oneness, we create a spiritual intention to connect to Hashem. W: Wish, which corresponds to the Shemona Esrei prayer. We take ownership of our connection with Hashem and with others. We ask Hashem to please fulfill our wishes and needs by creating a dwelling space for Him in this world. When we daven, it's important to remember Who is before You. "Daven" comes from the French word, devant, in front of. Remember in front of Whom you stand. Tefillah means attachment and connection. Siddur is from the word, "seder," which means order. That is why there is an order to our prayers. I know, I know - this is your least favorite episode which is why I asked one of the stars of the show to join me to go through and review the whole episode! Of course you know that Rachel, along with her sister Robyn played Carrie Ingalls! We get some cool stories and lots of laughs in this episode of the podcast! The following is from IMDB - I did not write this chaotic description but it's fairly accurate "Charles has the opportunity to earn $50 by helping run new telephone lines for 30 days. While he's away, Laura and Albert's time is used up with doing extra chores. Caroline is also busy and doesn't have time to deal with Carrie, so she is sent off on her own with some trivial job to do. She goes to pick some strawberries, but when she sees how little they are, she figures it will take her all day to pick enough for a pie. She falls asleep and dreams that a beautiful girl who looks just like her, named Elissa, takes her to a world where there are strawberries as big as she is along with other fruits. But, then she is awakened because she dreams there is a huge angry bug chasing her on that fruit. She goes home. The next day, she is sent to go fishing and Elissa takes her to Heaven to see their old dog Jack. The next day she has decided to use her Christmas penny to buy some licorice to share with Pa who should be coming home soon, but she drops the penny in the field, so she dreams that Elissa makes it big enough for her to sleep on so she can find it easily. She wakes up with it in her hand. Carrie has trouble deciding if Elissa is just her fairy tale friend or if she is real." The Godsister originally aired on December 8, 1978 The opening song "Albert" is written and performed by the amazing Norwegian band, Project Brundlefly and is used with permission. An incredibly passionate surfer, Hervé started out at Hoff in the late 90's before becoming Marketing Manager for a non-captive footwear brand. He would later return to the surfing industry, joining Omareef, Quiksilver's technical/core division, often referred to a « crash-course in surfing business » (under the supervision of Pierre Agnès) or a « one of a kind business ». Those were the days of Quiksilver's golden years: growth in the double-digits, the world's leading pro riders, XXL events and phenomenal budgets in marketing. For Hervé, it would become his own creative testing ground where he would also come to manage other key brands, namely Gotcha. His career then took him away from the Quiksilver family, leading him first into marketing consulting and later to become an entrepreneur with the creation of the Surf Lounge, specialising in high-end surf hardware retail. A new trade, new skills and once again success at the end of the road, all confirmed by his impressive portfolio, which includes the biggest brands out there, as well as his own: Greenbush. This episode promises to be a gold-mine of information, in which Hervé will discuss a variety of themes including audacity, surfing culture, what it means to be an entrepreneur and to have vision. He will share his experience as well as his perception to provide a SWOT analysis of the current market and how he sees it evolving. Enjoy the ride. Editorial production: EUROSIMA

This bonus episode is part of the Uniquely Wisconsin series, a broadcast and streaming series that spotlights the untold stories of Wisconsinites and highlights the communities in which they live. From the emotional and heartwarming, to the humorous and the historic, the Uniquely Wisconsin brand captures the essence of the people of America's Dairyland. While still a Discover Wisconsin feel, we're doing a deeper dive into the culture that makes up each county and how it forms Wisconsin's culture. This week, we highlight Sheboygan County. We begin with facts about Sheboygan County and how it serves as a fascinating cross-section of the state. Right by peaceful farms and beautiful forests with lakes and rolling hills you'll find world-class golfing destinations, resorts, impeccable dining, and robust companies with international profiles. While the county seat of Sheboygan is “bratwurst capital of the world” and a coastal city known for its freshwater surfing opportunities that draw people from all over – even in winter – a bevy of smaller towns offer a variety of ways to enjoy living, working, and playing. Plymouth, Sheboygan Falls, Howard's Grove, Greenbush, Elkhart Lake, Oostburg, Cedar Grove and more all offer options with convenient access to anything you need. Kohler, a town built from its namesake company, offers five-star golf, resorts, shopping, and even the Kohler Design Center, which inspires anyone looking to maximize the beauty and functionality of their home. Bold and diverse, yet friendly with great quality of life and opportunity – it's all in Sheboygan County.Stories shared include:The Arts Residency Program at John Michael Kohler Arts Center. The museum, which was opened thanks to the Kohler family in 1957, launched an Arts/Industry Residency Program in 1974. Ruth DeYoung Kohler II and her brother, the late Herb Kohler, were the founders and what they created became internationally recognized. The program invites a select group of artists at three month intervals to spend time in Kohler, creating artwork from materials found within Kohler Company's factory. They design beautiful artwork from enamel, brass, and more. Nearly 500 artists have participated in the program. The 12 artists chosen each year through a very competitive juried application process get the opportunity to work with one of the most unique collaborations between art and industry in the nation.Community Support with Lemons of Love. Lemons of Love is a non-profit that deliver cares packages to those diagnosed or impacted by cancer and cancer treatments. When Jill Swanson was diagnosed with cancer, she received a gift package to help her throughout the treatment process. She discovered these smallest of gifts can sometimes change the world for someone by providing motivation and inspiration. In 2014 Jill created Lemons of Love to pass on that motivation to other individuals impacted by cancer.  Lemons of Love is in Plymouth, with another location in Mount Prospect, Illinois. Since starting in 2014, Lemons of Love has worked with over 1,600 volunteers who have created and delivered over 19,000 care packages and who provide one-on-one family support. You can find out more, even volunteer or donate, at LemonsOfLove.org.The Shaw Family Playground. While fully-accessible ADA playgrounds are somewhat limited around Wisconsin, Sheboygan County recent developed its first fully accessible ADA playground in partnership with the Sheboygan Park Project and the Friends of the Sheboygan Jaycees. Sheboygan Park Project founders Ryan and Angie Shaw, whose story involving their conjoined twins became well-known, wanted to provide a space for their children and others to not have to watch from the sidelines as other children played. They spearheaded the fundraising and efforts to see the project through, realizing this inspiring vision to create a place for all kids. The park had its grand opening on August 27th, 2022 and is located within Evergreen Park on Pine Grove Avenue in Sheboygan; all are welcome.Family Business Legacies and Visions. We focus on two great businesses in Sheboygan: 3 Sheeps Brewing, which started relatively recently, and Miesfeld's, a longtime family business tradition.3 Sheeps Brewing: Starting at home by trial and error, Grant Pauly decided to take the next step in developing his business in 2012. What started for him as a hobby has now one of the most recognized local craft breweries in Wisconsin. As the company outgrew its original location, it moved into a former Coca-Cola facility that provided room for its expansion. Taking a chance and having a vision for success is key to any business plan, and Grant Pauly's story is in an inspiring one as 3 Sheeps continues to grow. Their brewery and tap room on North Avenue hosts live music and events as well as room to enjoy food, beverages, and games in a facility that welcomes the whole family. Miesfeld's is a widely loved, family-run business in Sheboygan County since 1941. Now home to the largest meat counters in the Midwest, Miesfeld's is a prime example of the power of Wisconsin's meat and sausage industry – and Sheboygan County's in particular. One thing that separates Miesfelds from most is their commitment to community. Every week at the Brat Hut outside the store, there is a brat fry that local organizations sign-up for to raise money. Miesfelds has also played a large part in fundraising for different causes, including the Children's Hospital of Wisconsin. We also talked with Karin Kirchmeier, the Executive Director of the Partners for Community Development in Sheboygan County. We discussed her love of the county and how the welcoming atmosphere made her arrival in the county two years ago an easy one for her and her family. We also covered many of the county's unique features and amenities and discussed some of their initiatives, which extend even beyond the county. Michelle then offers a preview of what we can watch on Uniquely Wisconsin's Sheboygan County episode online, including stories about the renowned Sheboygan Symphony, where we visit with a local music teacher who shares his talents and also the new conductor, who shares why he fell in love with Sheboygan County and his motivation to perform. The Sheboygan Youth Sailing Team, which introduces youths and adults to sailing while helping them develop the skills and safety to crow and skipper a sailboat. This program allows Sheboygan County residents to take advantage of the opportunities the vast shorelines of Lake Michigan provides. And finally, the Green Bicycle Company, Heather Cleveland founded in 2000 with the mission of helping people create and achieve their goals. Through community projects and consulting, Heather's dedication to her county and the communities within is an inspiration for others.

Sean was a healthy and robust boy until the summer he turned ten; that was when Sean's battle with gliomatosis cerebri began. Sean was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor after being admitted into the hospital for seizures during a family vacation in Rhode Island. Unlike most solid tumors, this rare tumor grows like a spider web. The tumor's rarity, presentation and cancerous threads made an accurate and expedient diagnosis challenging for Sean's medical team. Dr. Peter Manley of Dana-Farber advised the Jucha family they would treat Sean very aggressively. Sean responded well to the treatment with no disease progression for almost 2 years. At just about the 2-year mark, Sean developed headaches again and his next scan showed the disease was progressing. Dr. Manley then tried "targeted therapy" for Sean's tumor. Unfortunately, this did not work and Sean's tumor continued to progress. Dr. Manley still did not give up and Sean started radiation and chemotherapy again. Sean responded to this treatment and he continued to go to school, play sports and live a normal life. Sean never let his disease get him down, nor did he ever complain. Several months later, Sean began having new symptoms of dizziness and trouble walking.  A new scan showed Sean had a new tumor in his cerebellum which was affecting all his motor skills. He started falling frequently at school. Again, Dr. Manley didn't give up on Sean – he pulled out all the stops and tried to enroll him in multiple clinical trials and was able to set him up once again with additional radiation to his cerebellum. Dr. Manley was very honest with the family and informed them this was only palliative treatment, but it was something he pursued so their family could continue to have time with their precious son. Sean passed away on August 28, 2016, 3 years after his diagnosis. Sean was a huge Red Sox fan and attended many games. He has a younger brother Ryan.
