EPISODE 694: Behind the Mitten Road Trip -- Bay City to FrankenmuthIn this episode of "Behind the Mitten," hosts John Gonzalez and Amy Sherman celebrate 10 years of exploring Michigan's Great Lakes State. They embark on a road trip from Bay City to Frankenmuth, visiting local attractions like Tummyache candy store and John's Bar. The conversation highlights the importance of community, local businesses, and upcoming festivals in Frankenmuth, including the opening of a new water park. The hosts share their love for Michigan's culture, food, and the joy of road trips.Segment 1: The trip begins at Tummy Ache Candy Store in Bay City, and Amy and Gonzo meet Starr Henning, who co-owns the store with her husband, Michael, and they also operate an ice cream truck called "Starshine." It's a fun first stop!Segment 2: Amy and Gonzo introduce you to the charmingly awesome John's Bar & Party Store located in Munger right on Hwy 15. When we say right on the highway, it's a house that is just steps from the corner of Tuscola and Munger Roads, on your way south to Frankenmuth. Owner Kellie Brown, who co-owns the bar with her mom Mary Ann, and who's parents previously owned it, welcome everyone in this unssuming house/restaurant/bar. Local beef meets that famous griddle for the perfect flavorful sear, pick your patties and toppings and Kellie will get to work like the pro that she is. Everyone here is friendly and welcoming.Segment 3: After their stop at John's Bar, they travel about 15 miles south to Frankenmuth to visit Amy Zehnder Grossi at Michigan on Main, which is a sister restaurant to Bavarian Inn. It's a familiar stop because Amy and Gonzo were good friends of martriarch Dorothy Zehnder, a true Michigan treasure who passed away in 2023 at age 101. As president of Bavarian Inn Restaurant, Amy Zehnder Grossi shares what's new, including the just-opened Bavarian Blast, one of Michigan's biggest water parks. Segment 4: The night ends with a wine and charcuterie experience at Prost! in Frankenmuth. It feels like a big-city restaurant in the Bavarian-themed village. It has a cozy fireplace and lively atmosphere. That completes our Bay City to Frankenmuth road trip!Chapters00:00 -- Celebrating Michigan's Great Lakes State01:11 -- Road Trip Adventures: Bay City to Frankenmuth02:55 -- Exploring Tummyache: A Candy Wonderland12:54 -- John's Bar: A Local Favorite23:08 -- Frankenmuth: A Home Away From Home25:45 -- Bavarian Inn: A Family Tradition28:56 -- Exciting New Developments: Water Park Coming Soon29:48 -- Festivals in Frankenmuth: Celebrating Community33:27 -- Prost: A Cozy Wine Bar ExperienceLearn more about Behind the Mitten at amyandgonzo.com.

Song: Don't Go Putting the World on Your Shoulders Music by: Will Lawrence and Erin Bridges Notes: December in the north is such a great time for me to dig a little deeper -- finding mini-rests, sometimes even by taking an extra breath before I go do the next thing. I love that this song reminds me to lean on other people, too... to widen my base, to remember my connections. The irony of recording this (alone, in my basement!) was not lost on me!!! So I hope you sing extra vigorously along with me, and share this song widely -- I have been loving singing it with my Flow Singers this month, and we are really feeling that "take a nap" verse, I tell you! Songwriter Info: William Lawrence is an organizer and social movement strategist from Lansing, Michigan. He was a co-founder of Sunrise Movement. He is currently the Coordinator of the MI Rent Is Too Damn High coalition, fighting for rent control, tenants rights and social housing in the Great Lakes State. Erin Bridges was raised in Louisville, Kentucky, where she now lives with her dog and queer family in a big turquoise house. Like many southerners, she grew up with a love for shared meals, music sung in fellowship, pies made from the garden, and a close relationship to earth. Erin's work is rooted in building a world where everyone can access these simple pleasures. In 2017, she co-founded Sunrise, a youth movement that launched the Green New Deal, and more recently launched Hollerin' Up, aiming to fund people-powered teams for the long haul. Sharing Info: Erin and Will are happy for this song to be shared far and wide, attributed to the two of them! In the last stretch of the 2024 presidential race, time is money, and cash is king for both the Trump and Harris campaigns trying to make their final case to voters. Former President Trump has been in the swing states of North Carolina and Georgia, sometimes holding more than one event in a day. Meanwhile, Vice President Harris has been moving across the blue wall states with plans to soon campaign in Texas. Republican strategist and co-founder of South & Hill Strategies, Colin Reed, joins the Rundown to discuss what he sees as political malpractice from the Harris campaign and why he sees the momentum behind the Trump campaign. Michigan has become a pivotal battleground state in the race for the White House. Both candidates continue to drum up support as the campaigns near the finish line. However, the Great Lakes State is also home to a crucial Senate race that could determine which party will be in control come January. Former congressman and Republican Michigan Senate Candidate Mike Rogers joins to discuss his campaign, the current state of the race, and whether he thinks Michigan will flip red. Plus, commentary by Brian Kilmeade, Host of One Nation with Brian Kilmeade and The Brian Kilmeade Show. Photo Credit: AP Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

As it stands now, Trump has set the stage to win at least one and possibly two of those three states. The Harris campaign hasn't exactly conceded Michigan but admits it's a tough row to hoe for victory in the Great Lakes State. Get ready to feel inspired when you hear the story of Jesse and Ty from Exotic Matter founded in Michigan back in 2009.The Exotic Matter (@_exotic_matter) story is one of pure discovery and unbridled passion for the plant. Today, they are dominating the rec market across Michigan, recently opening their own storefront, The Trap, in Muskegon, boasting the cheapest prices in the city. It all began with Jesse's dream and uncontrollable urge to start growing a few plants wherever he could stash them. When he met local underground growers online and was able to gain entry to their private forums, Jesse found himself exchanging seeds in the mail while he was simultaneously learning how to clone and find his way.Jesse was always hungry to take the next big step and move away from his residential trap 4-lighters to a bigger commercial situation with staff. To get the knowledge he needed, Jessie spent time earning his stripes helping other cultivators run upwards of 150 lights until he and his partner found their sweet spot. He chronicles the growing pains of having to go from his various garage grows to a full-fledged commercial facility with 20 staff members. It all paid off when Jesse's family gave him the green light to build a massive outdoor grow on their 300-year-old family land that sits on an ancient glacial riverbed and empties into the Great Lakes of Michigan within the past several years. They've been cranking flower for fresh frozen and rosin pressing like gangbusters with no intention of stopping. BlackLeaf & PackGods remark on the impressive HQ they host the episode in as well as the flower presented to them.BlackLeaf & PackGods can't get enough of their Blue Yuzu strain in this pod, it doesn't take long for them to start complimenting the smoke. Jesse even comments on Michigan's lack of enforcement on how much product you can buy at their shop in Muskegon legally. There is no limit! BlackLeaf postulates picking up 5 P's of his favorite flavors and walking out the door with a big smile. If you're curious about what exactly is going on in Michigan's recreational market and who's pumping out the most cutting-edge genetics and grabbing the best from Cali, you need to tap in with this conversation. How about ONE MILLION illegitimate or dead voters on Arizona's voter rolls? And hush money judge Juan Merchan's daughter is connected to it? Brace yourselves. Proof of fraud in Michigan, too, as Trump pulls ahead of Joe Biden in the Great Lakes State. And remember the 51 former law enforcement officials who lied and said Hunter's laptop was Russian disinformation? We purposefully remember their names as Judicial Watch sues the CIA for helping to craft the deceitful letter. Never forget.

HHAUSA is not alone in what we are doing to help combat post traumatic stress in the Veteran and First Responder communities. There are many organizations across the country doing great work in this field, including others in the archery space. The Michigan based Shoot For Life is definitely one of them.I was blessed to meet Tom Spisz through the outdoor industry a few years back and we instantly struck up a friendship. Also a man of faith, the avid archer felt led towards a greater purpose as a 23 year old college student back in 2013 in what would lay the groundwork for Shoot For Life. A nonprofit organization promoting the physical and mental health benefits of the sport of archery, they are transforming lives one event, one arrow at a time.Running similar archery shoots as we do here at HHAUSA, Spisz and his dedicated team of volunteers have built an ever growing community of support, comradery and lifelong friendships around the bow and arrow.Having endured some of the same struggles in his personal life as I did a decade ago, Tom and I both can attest to how truly life changing archery can be, even for someone who may not suffer from PTSD. Together, our respective organizations are making a difference in spite both of us having busy schedules with our day jobs. Also donating full archery setups to Veterans with their Bows For Vets Program, Shoot For Life is doing God's work in The Great Lakes State and we are excited to collaborate more with them in the near future. Thank you for your service Tom, and may God bless you and your team!To learn more, you can follow them on Facebook and Instagram and visit their website at www.shootforlife.orgFor more information about HHAUSA and how you can support our mission, visit www.hhausa.orgTo purchases HHAUSA hats, shirts, challenge coins and tumblers, visit www.hhasports.com
These week, we used our midwestern sensibilities and traveled to north to the Great Lakes State to taste and try a bourbon that was gifted to us during a recent barrel pick experience. From just north of the Motor City, Valentine Distilling Co. burst onto the scene a few years ago by sourcing some excellent MGP distillate. During that time, they were also barreling their own liquid. Is this juice worth the squeeze?
