Belgian contemporary artist Rinus Van de Velde joins Dominique Nzeyimana in the loft. With a career spanning over 20 years, Rinus has enchanted the international art world and is hailed for his powerfully fluid drawings and texts. His artistic practice spans drawing, painting, sculpture, installation and film - opening portals to multiple realities. Rinus and Dominique have a meeting of minds about the artist's changing relationship with nostalgia, expansion, the magic of drawing, learning from his artistic forefathers and the enduring impact of Paul McCarthy, Raymond Pettibon and Franz West.  You'll also get the story behind his deep bond with gallerist Tim Van Laere and how their partnership came to be. From Rinus' first fantasies of creation, learning to advocate for his art to producing internationally raved-about exhibitions across continents: you'll hear all about it from the man behind the masterpieces himself.  A true Modern Great!  To visit Rinus Van de Velde ‘I'm Done Singing About the Past' at Tim Van Laere Gallery Rome go HERE. An in-depth conversation with Sarah Lucas about her life and work. Lucas, born in London in 1962, is one of the most significant artists of her generation, both in Britain, where she was associated with the 1990s movement known as the Young British Artists, and internationally, where she has been the subject of several significant recent institutional exhibitions. Her practice primarily consists of sculpture, but it is often presented in distinctive installations in dialogue with photography, in the form of prints or wallpaper. Her work is characterised by sardonic and ribald humour, informed by colloquial British language but also shot through with feminist theory and social commentary. Formed from a wealth of materials, many of them everyday found objects like newspapers, food, furniture, cigarettes and clothing, her sculptures almost always evoke the body, however crudely reduced or abstracted. And while a humdrum frankness and bawdiness are ever-present, Lucas's sense of the strange and the uncanny locate her work within the legacies of Dada, Surrealism and absurdist art in Europe and the US. She discusses her innovative approach to exhibition-making, and the liberating collaborations with Franz West that influenced them. She discusses how Yoko Ono informed some of her recent work. She reflects on an anarchic collaboration with the Austrian collective gelitin. Plus, she gives insight into her working practices and studio life.Sarah Lucas: Happy Gas, Tate Britain, London, until 14 January 2024. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Yo! Welcome to Chris and Rifa's weekly ramble through the arts, culture, tech and diversity. This week we went to the pictures to watch Captain Marvel and we also did our first Tate Modern trip of the year, to check out Dorothea Tanning, Franz West and Pierre Bonnard, though he scarcely got a look in. We recorded the Tate segment in the members' café, so it's a lot noisier and harder to hear than usual. Chris also recommends Njideka Akunyili Crosby's beautiful large mural Remain, Thriving above the entrance to Brixton Tube. Chris is reading Evan Ratliff's excellent new crime non-fic The Mastermind, while Rifa is loving Jim Bob From Carter: In The Shadow Of My Former Self.
