Secession Podcast is a new digital series created by the Secession. In conversations with artists, curators, and experts, the podcast series provides interesting insights into the twelve to fifteen exhibitions of contemporary art that take place at the Secession every year. The program also features discussions on current issues as well as experimental sound formats and dialogues with members of the Association of Visual Artists, who share their personal recollections and reflect on the 125-year history of this unique artist-run institution.

    This episode of Secession Podcast: Members features artist Florian Pumhösl in conversation with artist colleague Elisabeth Kihlström. It was recorded at the Secession on 7 November 2024. Florian Pumhösl, born 1971, is an artist based in Vienna and Munich. Focussing on abstract vocabulary he has been working mostly on reliefs and drawings for the past years. Recent solo exhibitions have been held at Miguel Abreu Gallery in New York, Galerie Buchholz in Berlin, and at Dvir Gallery, Paris.   Elisabeth Kihlström, born 1988 in Sundborn, Sweden, is a visual artist based in Vienna. Working with sculpture, textile, installation, performance, and film, her recent practice focuses on handwoven sculptures made from metal and horsehair. She was awarded the Dorothea von Stetten Art Award in 2024. Recent presentations include Kunstmuseum Bonn, Contemporary Art Factory Kyoto, Black Forest Institute (BIA) and MUMOK Kino. In June 2025, she will present new work at BEK Forum, Vienna. Kihlström is also co-editor of Agency, a Vienna-based publishing initiative.     This episode is a conversation between the artist Ana Vaz and the curator Damian Lentini. It was recorded on 7 March, 2025 in the context of the exhibition: Ana Vaz Meteoro  8.4. – 18.5.2025 In her film-poems artist and filmmaker Ana Vaz collages images and sounds that revolve around violence and repression, the impact of ecological ruin and the continued colonization of the earth. The deconstruction of the grand narrative of Western modernity that imposes itself across vast territories on this planet lies at the heart of her filmography. In her exhibition at the Secession, Vaz showcases her new film series Meteoro (2023–). Predominantly focusing on Paris and Porto, European cities are depicted as on the verge of collapse or on the path to extinction. More Ana Vaz is an artist and filmmaker born in the Brazilian midwest inhabited by the ghosts buried by its modernist capital: Brasília. Originally from the cerrado and wanderer by choice, Ana has lived in the arid lands of central Brazil and southern Australia, in the mangroves of northern France and in the northeastern shores of the Atlantic. Her filmography activates and questions cinema as an art of the (in)visible and instrument capable of transforming human perception, expanding its connections with forms of life — other than human or spectral. Her film-poems are marked by a constant experimental defiance to the poetic forms of contemporary cinema, highlighting the profound contradictions of our time and questioning, above all, the destructive practices of colonial modernity. Consequences or expansion of her cinematography, her activities are also embodied in writing, critical pedagogy, installations or collective walks. Damian Lentini is a curator at the Vienna Secession. He obtained his doctoral degree in 2009 at the University of Melbourne and has realised major projects with artists such as El Anatsui, Phyllida Barlow, Kapwani Kiwanga, Sarah Sze, Sung Tieu, Raqs Media Collective, Harun Farocki, Dumb Type, Khvay Samnang, Lina Lapelytė and the Karrabing Film Collective amongst others.     This episode looks back at one of the central artistic positions in the group exhibition Forms of the Shadow. Minouk Lim's Currahee – Stand Alone, a floor-to-ceiling installation of painted military blankets, created a striking division of space and, in the context of the exhibition, could also be read in terms of the divided situation on the Korean peninsula, but also in the broader context of military conflicts, and as such this work is exemplary of current political crises and the latent danger of military escalation. The Hauptraum, the largest gallery of Secession, is one of the earliest and most representative examples of it. Like many artists who have exhibited here, Yuki Okumura took its empty state as a departure point for his working process. But instead of bringing works to this ideal backdrop to isolate art from the world, the artist conceived three site-specific projects to rediscover the space as a lived room interconnected with the world marked by its own conditions and contexts. For each project, Okumura designed a playful procedure and asked people related to the Hauptraum to enact it.     The idea that natural elements can serve as witnesses to history is central to my work. When you look at the landscapes in my projects – what I refer to as ‘landscapes of violence' or ‘geographies of violence' – you see how these environments bear witness to historical trauma and conflict. (Ali Cherri) This episode was recorded on 19 February 2025 in the context of the exhibition: Ali Cherri How I Am Monument 6.12.2024 – 23.2.2025 Ali Cherri was born in Beirut and lives and works in Paris. Spanning film, performance, sculpture, drawing, and installation, his work is inspired both by archaeological artefacts and the natural world, exploring the temporal shifts between ancient civilisations and contemporary societies. Using artefacts as a starting point, he investigates the boundaries of ideologies that underpin the foundations of nations and the myth of national progression. His work considers the links between archaeology, historical narrative and heritage, and the processes of excavation and relocation of cultural objects into museums. Reflecting on different geographies of violence in his native Lebanon but also in the broader region, he interrogates the ways in which political violence disseminates into people's bodies and the physical and cultural landscape. More Jeanette Pacher is a curator for contemporary art and has worked at the Secession since 2007, where she has developed numerous exhibitions in a sustained dialogue with artists, often supporting them in the production of new works, and has edited and contributed to related publications. She lectures regularly at the Department of Site-Specific Art at the University of Applied Arts Vienna and, since 2023, has served as a jury member for KÖR – Art in Public Space Vienna.     In dieser Folge hören Sie den Künstler und ehemaligen Präsidenten der Secession, Matthias Herrmann im Gespräch mit Rike Frank, aufgezeichnet am 17. Juni 2024. Matthias Herrmann (*1963 in München) war von 1986 bis 1988 Mitglied des Balletts der Wiener Staatsoper. Von 1988 bis 1993 studierte er konzeptuelle Kunst bei Prof. Ernst Caramelle und Brigitte Kowanz an der Hochschule für angewandte Kunst in Wien. Von 1997 bis 1999 war er Mitglied des Vorstands der Wiener Secession, zu deren Präsident er 1999 (als jüngster Präsident seit Gustav Klimt) gewählt wurde. Von 2006 bis 2012 war er Professor für Kunst und Fotografie an der Akademie der bildenden Künste Wien, wo er nach Beendigung seiner Professur von 2013 bis 2018 als Mitglied des Universitätsrats tätig war. Seit 1999 wird er als Künstler von der Galerie Steinek (www.steinek.at) vertreten und lebt heute in Wien und Riparbella (Italien), wo er mit seinem Mann eine biologische Landwirtschaft betreibt. Rike Frank interessiert sich seit den 1990er Jahren für institutionelle Modelle, ist als Kuratorin tätig, publiziert und unterrichtet gelegentlich Ausstellungsgeschichte und kuratorische Praxis. Seit 2020 ist sie Geschäftsführerin des Berliner Programm Künstlerische Forschung und leitet zusammen mit Vanessa Joan Müller die European Kunsthalle.     “Lately, I have been considering how to get out of a structure in which I am forced to make sense. So, I've been thinking about the ways in which 20th century Caribbean poetry did a lot of work around nonsense. At the center of her three films shown at the Secession is, of all things, nonsense. The newly produced works that were shot on 16 mm stock and then transferred to video use free association and formal play to build relationships between sound and image that are not to be grasped by “making” rational sense.  More Beatriz Santiago Muñoz is an artist whose expanded moving image work is entangled with Boalian theater, expanded cinema and feminist practices. She tends to work with non-actors, and incorporates improvisation into her process. Her recent work is on the sensorial unconscious of anti-colonial movements and language experiments. Recent solo exhibitions include: Ottilia at Crac-Alsace, Oriana in PIVO, Sao Paulo, and argos in Brussels. She lives in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Since 2008, Bettina Spörr is a curator at the Secession, where she engages in close collaboration with artists to conceptualise and realise exhibitions that explore the profound impact of contemporary art on society. It was recorded on 3 December, 2024 in the context of the exhibition: Rochelle Feinstein The Today Show 6.12.2024 – 23.2.2025 For over forty years, the American painter Rochelle Feinstein has developed an oeuvre that infiltrates abstract painting with political, social and environmental concerns. Throughout a series of diverse yet thematically interwoven groups of works, Feinstein cuts, flips, and rearranges printed gestural marks that are then collaged into paintings; she also makes sculptures and prints out of everyday materials. The Today Show presents a range of newly created works that circulate around the question of how to connect canvas, color and gesture with the specific personal and public conditions of our time. More Rochelle Feinstein is a painter navigating the terrain of abstract painting as it unfolds across diverse and thematically interwoven bodies of work. Geometric forms—the modernist trope of the grid is a regular presence—and vibrant chroma become tools to explore notions of artistic value and production, societal structures, and feminist idioms. Though it takes myriad forms, her singular project always centers painting within culture at large. While drawing upon the conventions embedded in painting practices as much those of contemporary culture, her works incorporate drawing, photography, printmaking, sculpture, and video.     On the occasion of the group exhibition Forms of the Shadow, a spontaneous series of conversations with the artists who attended the opening in Vienna has evolved into a podcast mini-series. These audio recordings offer fascinating background information on the works and diverse artistic approaches. “My work deals with tourism, militarism, colonialism, imperialism—forms of power” says Vancouver-based artist Jin-me Yoon. In her conversation with Bettina Spörr, she revealed that her first university degree was in psychology, a field of study that deeply influenced her artistic practice. She talks among many other topics about her work Beneath (2012) that was filmed in Vienna. Through a seemingly simple action—pushing her body on a moving platform from Sigmund Freud's former home and office to Heldenplatz, where Hitler was welcomed by thousands during Austria's annexation in 1938—Yoon directly addresses a profound national trauma.     Young In Hong is working across installation, sound, performance, textile and drawing. Her practice often focuses on undervalued cultural practices and seeks for a sense of equality that gently undermines ruling hierarchies.     Forms of the Shadow is the first group exhibition at the Secession since 2018, continuing the loose series of guest-curated thematic shows held there at irregular intervals. In this podcast, recorded on 20 September 2024, the day after the opening, Bettina Spörr speaks with Sunjung Kim about her REAL DMZ PROJECT and how Forms of the Shadow evolved from it. Their conversation also explores Sunjung Kim's personal motivation to engage with the political division of North and South Korea, as well as her journey to becoming one of South Korea's most influential curators. She was the president of the Gwangju Biennale Foundation (2017–2021), director of Art Sonje Center (2016–2017), the artistic director of ACC Archive & Research at the Asia Art Culture Center (2014–2015), and chief curator and deputy director (1993–2004) of Art Sonje Center. Additionally, she is the founder and artistic director of the REAL DMZ PROJECT, an art and research project designed to cross the boundaries of the museum and launched in 2011 to explore the (in)visible borders of the Demilitarized Zone through the critical lens of art and to raise awareness about the division of Korea. Bettina Spörr is a curator at the Secession (2008-present), where she engages in close collaboration with artists to conceptualize and realize exhibitions. It addresses the measurable evidence and effects of radioactive fallout dispersed around the world as a result of heavy testing of nuclear weapons, especially during the Cold War era.     Rosa Hausleithner erzählt im Gespräch mit Sophie Thun von ihren Anfängen als Künstlerin, ihrer Zeit an der Akademie in der Bildhauerklasse von Bruno Gironcoli und wie sich ihre Arbeiten von ortspezifischen, skulptural-architektonischen Interventionen zu gemalten Raumkompositionen entwickelt haben. Diese Folge wurde am 7. Juni 2024 im Podcast-Studio der Secession aufgenommen. Rosa Hausleithners polychrome Bildräume formieren sich primär in ihren Gedanken. Als kleine, skizzenhafte Linienzeichnungen werden sie mit Blei- und Farbstiften auf Papier fixiert, um dann in Acryl auf Leinwand ausformuliert zu werden. Von der Bildhauerei kommend, baut die 1952 in Wien geborene Künstlerin mit ihren Gemälden fiktionale Farbräume, die sich den perspektivischen Regeln gezielt widersetzen. „Die Farbgebung, einmal opak, oftmals luzid, verstärkt und / oder verführt den Blick des Betrachtens, bis hin zur Imagination eines Kippeffekts. Dadurch entstehen im Zusammenspiel der verschiedenen Bildbausteine immer wieder neu definierte Standpunkte.“ (Rosa Hausleithner über ihre Arbeit anlässlich der Verleihung des 2020 von der Secession vergebenen Gmoser Preises). Rosa Hausleithner absolvierte 1984 ihr Bildhauereistudium bei Bruno Gironcoli an der Akademie der bildenden Künste in Wien und stellte u. a. in der Neuen Galerie Graz, im Künstlerhaus Salzburg, in der Secession, der Kunsthalle Krems und im Museum auf Abruf in Wien aus. Sie war im Vorstand der IG Bildende Kunst tätig und Beiratsmitglied des Kulturrat Österreich. Seit ist sie 1987 Mitglied der Secession. Sophie Thun (*1985, lebt und arbeitet in Wien) arbeitet vor allem mit Techniken der analogen Fotografie, ihren Räumen, Prozessen sowie Produktions- und Ausstellungsbedingungen. Aufgewachsen in Warschau, absolvierte Thun ihr Masterstudium an den Akademien der bildenden Künste in Wien und in Krakau.     The black dome of the Secession attracted everyone's attention in June 2024. The work, entitled Statement, was a highly visible symbol of the dignity of black women. It was part of the exhibition Achievement by Cuban artist Susana Pilar Delahante Matienzo, whose work articulates feminist, anti-racist and anti-colonial counter-visions, highlighting the achievements of black women and advocating a form of healing. In this conversation with Bettina Spoerr, recorded on 21 June 2024, the artist talks about how she fell in love with the golden dome of the Secession and was inspired to activate the architecture.   Susana Pilar Delahante Matienzo Achievement 21.6. – 8.9.2024   The reinvention of memory and the critical engagement with archives are central to Delahante Matienzo's research and a strategy that lets her recover the identities and legacies of people who were denied the right to record their own histories. As a Cuban-born artist with African and Chinese roots, she knows from her own family's experience that, for the longest time, oral traditions were the only available sources on which to draw for one's lineage and heritage. In Achievement, she presents a fictional and speculative archive that features Black women as prominent, affluent, and esteemed members of society and as hardworking and self-determined businesswomen. In so doing, she not only undertakes a critique of history, she also takes a vital step toward a more nuanced consideration—ultimately, a reprogramming—of beliefs that have seemed impossible to dislodge. Defying the colonial gaze, the artist charts assertive alternative representations. More   Susana Pilar Delahante Matienzo, born 1984 in Havana, Cuba, has lived and worked in the Netherlands since 2021. She describes her work across photography, video, and performance as a preoccupation with creating “symbolic solutions and personal responses” to the history of violence against women. She sees her body as an archive of the forced displacement of people from Africa and Asia to Cuba. Her critical works take a personal perspective as a starting point. Resistance, struggle, family archive, mothers, Black women, Negritude - these are the themes along which the artist's profound work unfolds.   Collaborating in close dialogue with artists to conceive and realise exhibitions together, and reflecting on the impact contemporary art can have on our society are key to Bettina Spörr's practice as a curator and writer. Hermann Czech ist Ehrenmitglied der Secession und Preisträger des Großen Österreichischen Staatspreises 2024.   Hermann Czech (*1936 in Wien), studierte Architektur an der TH Wien und an der Akademie der bildenden Künste in Wien bei Ernst A. Plischke. 1958 und 1959 nahm er an den Seminaren von Konrad Wachsmann an der Salzburger Sommerakademie teil. Erste architektonische Arbeiten ab 1960, von 1963 bis 1967 schrieb er architekturkritische Texte für Die Furche. Ab den 1970er-Jahren Projekte und Realisierungen in verschiedenen Planungsmaßstäben. Veröffentlichung der frühen Schriften 1978 unter dem Titel Zur Abwechslung (erweiterte Neuauflage 1996), 2021 folgte Ungefähre Hauptrichtung. Schriften und Gespräche zur Architektur (beides Löcker Verlag). Hermann Czech war Gastprofessor an der Harvard University in Cambridge/USA, der ETH Zürich, an der TU Wien und der Akademie der bildenden Künste in Wien. Hermann Czech lebt und arbeitet in Wien.   Andreas Spiegl lehrt und forscht als Senior Scientist am Institut für Kunst- und Kulturwissenschaften an der Akademie der bildenden Künste Wien, an der er von 2003 bis 2011 die Funktion als Vizerektor für Forschung und Lehre innehatte. This episode is a conversation between Simone Fattal and Jeanette Pacher, the curator of the exhibition. It was recorded on June 19, 2024 in the context of the exhibition: Simone Fattal metaphorS 21.6. – 8.9.2024 In her exhibition metaphorS, Simone Fattal presents bodies of work from different periods in her career and in a variety of media, including fired clay and ceramic sculptures, paintings, and collages. With her works, she tells stories of humanity, culture, history, and the present. Conflict, consensus, nature, faith, and trust are central concerns. Despite (or precisely because of) the artist's nomadic life, her oeuvre is deeply rooted in the millennia-old culture and history of the Middle East—she was raised in Damascus and Beirut—and the epic literature, poetry, archaeology, and landscapes of this region are both vital sources of inspiration and central themes. More Simone Fattal (*1942) was raised in Damascus and Beirut, studied archaeology and philosophy in France and began painting in Beirut in the early 1970s. After years of civil war, she left Lebanon in 1980 and settled in California, where she founded the Post-Apollo Press; for the next thirty years, she dedicated herself to publishing literature and poetry, including many books by her partner Etel Adnan. In the late 1980s, she studied sculpture at the San Francisco Art Institute and fell in love with working with clay. Meanwhile, she also started making collages that combine pictures of archaeological sites and relics with contemporary photographs. Today, Simone Fattal lives and works in Paris. Jeanette Pacher is a curator for contemporary visual arts and has been working at the Secession since 2007. She is a regular lecturer in the Department of Site-Specific Art at the University of Applied Arts Vienna, and since 2023, a jury member of KÖR – Art in Public Space Vienna. Sein Studium der Bildhauerei schloss er an der Akademie der bildenden Künste Wien ab. In seiner darauffolgenden beinahe 30-jährigen Tätigkeit als Lehrender ebendort war er eine prägende und wichtige Integrationsfigur für mehrere Generationen von Künstler*innen und von 2001 bis 2002 Vizerektor der Akademie. Von 1995 bis 1999 war er Präsident der Wiener Secession; 2021 wurde er von dieser zum Ehrenmitglied ernannt. Er ist Herausgeber etlicher Publikationen. 2012 erhielt unter anderem das Buch Arkadien und angenehme Feinde. Die Bildhauerateliers im Prater von Revolver Publishing, Berlin (2011), das Prädikat „schönste Bücher“ Österreichs.   Claudia Märzendorfer (geb. 1969 in Wien) ist bildende Künstlerin. Ihr Studium der Bildhauerei schloss sie an der Akademie der bildenden Künste Wien ab. His oeuvre encompasses sprawling installations, process-based sculptures, drawings, audio plays, and biological and internet art. Central concerns include the conjunction of linguistic, visual, and material elements, the uncovering of latent superimpositions of fact and fiction, and the nexus between art and science. Feuerstein's method of “conceptual narration” interweaves art, architecture, philosophy, literature, and philosophy with economics, politics, and technology. Since the mid-1990s, he has harnessed biotechnologies and artificial neuronal networks to create projects that examine the interplay between individuality and sociality, an aesthetics of entropy, and a cybernetic “daimonology” of cultural processes.   Lucie Strecker's trans-media practice investigates experimental systems in art and the sciences, exploring a post-anthropocentric conception of performativity. Her work has been shown at festivals and galleries and in museums. More Joshua Simon, born in Tel Aviv-Jaffa, Israel in 1979, lives and works in Tel Aviv-Jaffa and Lüneburg, Germany. Christian Lübbert holds the position of the Junior Curator at the Secession. He has worked with art institutions such as Tate Modern, the Institute for Contemporary Arts, Chisenhale Studios, the Royal Academy of Arts, and the Delfina Foundation in London, as well as Studio Simon Denny, Galerie House of Egorn, and the Brandenburg Art Prize. Marianne Maderna (b. 1944) lives and works in Vienna and Lower Austria. Her interdisciplinary installations, environments, and performances grapple with socially relevant concerns that address the human condition and devise novel ways to frame patterns of human behavior and hierarchical systems. Her work has been featured in exhibitions including RADICAL BUSTS, Arkadenhof, University of Vienna (2015); HUMANIMALS, Zeitkunst NÖ, Dominikanerkirche Krems (2013); Das erste Haus, Architekturzentrum Wien, Vienna (1996); Raum und Ausgang, Secession, Vienna (1990–91); and Maderna, Secession, Vienna (1982). It was recorded on December 15, 2023 in the context of the exhibition: Agency of Singular Investigations On New Thinking And Other Forgotten Dreams 1.12.2023 – 25.2.2024 Anna Titova and Stanislav Shuripa founded Agency of Singular Investigations (ASI) in 2014 to take a stand on the dramatic changes in Russia's political reality and cultural atmosphere and to respond to the advent of the postfactual age by thinking about alternative ways of harnessing images and means of communication for the construction of identities and worldviews. At the Secession, ASI present the new installation On New Thinking and Other Forgotten Dreams. It is the first part of their wide-ranging research project The Park of Mind Revolutions, which investigates the history of subjectivity and the forms and functions of Russia's self-image in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Organized as a dialogue between the worker Grigoriy Zamzin and a pickle about the meaning of Russia's most recent history, the installation comprises four sculptures, a sprawling wall diagram, and a blue carpet. Taking inspiration from the interwar literature of magical realism, the artists employ carefully selected fantastic elements, irrational events, and metaphors to frame a critical perspective on the complexity of their country's historical evolution. Playing with hybrid dimensions of reality and collisions between historical forces, they expose the energies that shape the psychological, technological, and social system. Rooted in solidarity against patriarchal and racial discrimination, the group offers a space and growing network to give voice to the many individuals affected by such discrimination and foster new forms of collaboration. This episode is a conversation between the artist Mykola Ridnyi and the board member and artist Anna Witt. It was recorded on September 15, 2023 in the context of the exhibition: Mykola Ridnyi 15.9. – 12.11.2023 Mykola Ridnyi's generation of Ukrainians grew up in a climate of increasing orientation toward the West and the European Union. This emancipation from Russia found expression in the 2004 Orange Revolution and was defended in the Euromaidan events of 2013–14. It was a process that went hand in hand with the emergence of a confident Ukrainian arts scene, among whose leading exponents Ridnyi ranks. Long before graduating from the Kharkiv State Academy of Design and Arts in 2008, he was instrumental to the formation of a politically active arts scene, both as an artist in his own right and as a curator and author. He was a founding member of the art collective SOSka, whose SOSka gallery-lab, an artist-run space that existed from 2005 until 2012, was a key contribution to the local artistic infrastructure. Ridnyi's curatorial project Armed and Dangerous (2017–2021) prompted him to begin developing a platform for collaborations between Ukrainian moving-image artists and filmmakers. In 2022–23, he curated several Ukrainian film and video art screening programs at DAAD-Galerie, Berlin; MAXXI, Rome; Museum Folkwang, Essen; and the National Gallery, Sofia. More Anna Witt, born in Germany in 1981, lives and works in Vienna and Berlin. Her artistic practice is performative, participatory, and political. She creates situations that reflect interpersonal relationships and power structures as well as conventions of speaking and acting. Her work has been shown at the SEMA Seoul Museum of Art; the Secession, Vienna; the 1st Vienna Biennale at MAK; the Gallery of Contemporary Art Leipzig; Museum Ludwig, Cologne; the Austrian Cultural Forum in New York; Kunstmuseum Bern; and the MOCA Museum of Contemporary Art Taipei, among others, and she has had solo exhibitions at Museum Belvedere 21 Contemporary, Vienna; Kunst Halle Sankt Gallen, and Gallery Tanja Wagner, Berlin, at Marabouparken konsthall, Stockholm and Stacion—Center for Contemporary Art, Prishtina, Kosovo. This episode is a conversation between the artist Chen Chieh-jen and the curator Meiya Cheng and the curator Jeanette Pacher. It was conducted in Mandarin and recorded on June 30, 2023 in the context of the exhibition: Chen Chieh-jen Worn Away 30.6. – 3.9.2023 A long-time denizen of Taiwan's art world, Chen Chieh-jen's work from the 1980s to the present has been exhibited internationally. To the local scene, he became renowned for Dysfunction No. 3, an interventionist performance on Taipei's streets in the early 1980s. Wandering along dressed as hooded inmates, Chen and his contemporaries rejoinded government control through civil disobedience, forging a public sphere during times of oppression: From 1949 to 1987, the country was subjected to martial law, an emergency state governance banning free speech and public assembly. Distancing Taiwan from the neighboring People's Republic of China, the innately anti-communist martial law coerced power through a one-party system, with the military and secret police assuming control. In Chen's multifaceted work, the Japanese rule over Taiwan in the first half of the 20th century, the country's kinship with the US during the Cold War, and its present-day neoliberalization feature as periodic points of departure. More Meiya Cheng is a curator from Taipei. Before co-founding the Taipei Contemporary Art Center (TCAC), an experimental art association and independent art space in 2010, she worked as a curator at the Museum of Contemporary Art, MoCA, Taipei. As chair of the TCAC association from 2012 to 2014, she initiated exhibitions, forums, residencies and publications with contributions of Asian art workers that were presented in Taipei, New York, and Southeast Asia. She co-curated Trading Futures with Pauline Yao at Taipei Contemporary Art Center (2012), the  6th Queens International with Hitomi Iwasaki at Queens Museum, New York (2013), and The Great Ephemeral with the New Museum team at the New Museum, New York (2015). Her research on Southeast Asian art was presented in the exhibition Public Spirits at the Center for Contemporary Art Ujazdów Castle, Warsaw (2016). Florentina Pakosta (b. 1933) is an Austrian artist and pioneer of the feminist avant-garde. Initially active as an artist working with drawing, a socio-critical realism prevailed at first, successively leading through the reduction of forms to her characteristic, abstract-geometric tricolour paintings. From 1952 to 1960 she studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague and Vienna. In 1971 she became a member of the Secession and from 1975 to 1983 she was its first female board member. In 1978 she curated the exhibition Secessionistinnen. Since 1975, the artist has published numerous short stories and art-theoretical texts. Her works are represented in renowned collections and museums, including the Albertina and the Museum der Moderne Salzburg. In 2023 she received the Austrian Art Prize. Jürgen Tabor has been curator of the Generali Foundation Collection – Permanent Loan to the Museum der Moderne Salzburg since July 2019. He studied art history as well as English and American studies at the University of Innsbruck. Until 2017 he was curator, deputy and interim director of TAXISPALAIS, Kunsthalle Tirol, then curator of the Klocker Foundation and the Biennale Innsbruck International. As a freelance curator he realized projects in Bolzano, Madrid, Vienna, Budapest and Dornbirn, among others. He is the author of numerous texts on 20th century and contemporary art and has taught at the universities of Innsbruck and Graz. Melissa Lumbroso (b. 1980 in Paris) is assistant curator at the Albertina in Vienna, where she has collaborated on several group exhibitions, e.g. Drawing Now: 2015, as well as on large-scale exhibitions dedicated to Keith Haring, Florentina Pakosta, Hermann Nitsch, Xenia Hausner, Ai Weiwei and Yoshitomo Nara. She established “Kunst@IHS” in 2017, a series of exhibitions with contemporary artists at the Institute for Advanced Studies in Vienna. On the one hand, she uses "classical" forms and techniques, especially textile techniques such as embroidery and appliqué, which, in conjunction with large-flowered fabrics and fantastic imagery, are immediately associated with clichés and stereotypes. Carl Pruscha (b. 1936 in Innsbruck) studied architecture at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna with Lois Welzenbacher and Roland Rainer and urban planning at Harvard University with José Luis Sert. In 1976 Pruscha became university professor and head of his institute at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna. From 1988 to 2002, he was the rector of the academy. An important project from this period was the reconstruction of the so-called Semper Depot. From 2001 to 2005, Pruscha transitioned to the position of professor in Design and Habitat, Environment & Conservation. At the invitation of the Getty Institute in Los Angeles, he wrote critical analyses of architectural developments in countries of the Global South. From 2005, he realised the new school building for the organisation "One World Foundation" in Sri Lanka. Carl Pruscha was Chairman of the Advisory Board for Art and Building in the Ministry of Science, Art and Research, is a sought-after jury member in art and architecture competitions, and has been awarded the Austrian Decoration for Science and Art and the Gold Decoration for Services to the City of Vienna, among others. Bettina M. Busse is an art historian and curator at Kunstforum Wien. Before that, she worked for many years as a curator at MAK Museum of Applied Arts/Contemporary Art, Vienna. She has curated numerous exhibitions on Contemporary and Modern Art, including Joseph Beuys, Anish Kapoor, Jannis Kounellis, Jenny Holzer. The Cindy Sherman Effect. Barbara Holub lives and works in Vienna. Following her studies in architecture at the Technical University of Stuttgart, Holub developed a socio-politically engaged art practice. In 1999 she founded the collective transparadiso with Paul Rajakovics, which operates at the interface of art, architecture and urban intervention. From 2006 to 2007 Barbara Holub was president of the Secession. Edelbert Köb (b. 1942 in Bregenz) lives and works in Vienna. He is a graduate of the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna and the University of Vienna. From 1966 onwards, he devoted himself mainly to sculpture, but ended his artistic activity in 1992. From 1973 to 2002, he was a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, and its vice-chancellor from 1985 to 1995 and 1998 to 2000. From 1982 to 1991 he was president of the Secession and from 1990 to 2000 founding director of the Kunsthaus Bregenz. Between 2002 and 2010 he was director of the Museum of Modern Art (MUMOK). Beyond that, Köb was an active editor, author and member of numerous juries and councils. Dr. Thomas Mießgang is a journalist, cultural publicist and independent curator. He has worked for magazines such as Falter, profil as well as Die ZEIT and is at present primarily active as part of the radio programme by Ö1 (Diagonal, Radiokolleg). Recent exhibition projects were „Ganz Wien. Eine Pop-Tour“ (2017) at the Wien Museum and „Griaß eich die Madln, servas die Buam! Das Phänomen Heinz Conrads“ (2021/22) at the Wienbibliothek im Rathaus. In the 1980s, Mießgang played in the band of the recently deceased media artist and theorist Peter Weibel. Small-format drawings and sprawling murals, internet memes, text messages in public spaces, and banners towed across the sky by airplanes pack a punch and seem to want to explode the confines and constraints of their media. Her drawings are graphical and spare and largely fall into one of two categories: one utilizes the aesthetics of infographics, while the other adopts the formal repertoire of comic strips, notably speed lines to convey action and reaction. This episode is a conversation between the artist Jordan Strafer, the curator Marti Manen and the curator Christian Lübbert. It was recorded on February 17, 2023 in the context of the exhibition: Jordan Strafer LOOPHOLE 17.2. – 16.4.2023 New York-based artist Jordan Strafer's primary medium is video. Her part-autobiographical, part-fictitious work reflects the complex nature of racial identity, gender, sexuality, class, and ‘Americanism.' A key aspect of her practice is the thoughtful yet playful choreography of seemingly antagonistic emotions—both comical and tragic, intimate and factual, familiar and unfamiliar, repulsive and appealing situations appear in an unusually fluid manner. Drawing from true stories, she makes visible that realities are rarely dualistic. More Marti Manen is Director of Index - The Swedish Contemporary Art Foundation in Stockholm. He has curated exhibitions at the Museo de Historia Natural (Mexico City), Aara (Bangkok), Sala Rekalde (Bilbao), Konsthall C (Stockholm), CA2M (Madrid), and Fundació Miró (Barcelona). Manen was the curator of the Spanish Pavilion at the 2015 Venice Biennale, and curated Momentum10 (Biennale in Moss, Norway, 2019). In the 1990s, he curated five years of exhibitions in his room located in a student flat in Barcelona. Christian Lübbert is a curator at the Secession. He has worked with art institutions such as Tate Modern, the Institute for Contemporary Arts, Chisenhale Studios, the Royal Academy of Arts and the Delfina Foundation in London, as well as Studio Simon Denny, Galerie House of Egorn and the Brandenburg Art Prize in Berlin. Since 2017, he runs Arnis Residency, an annual residency for international artists. In 2020, he organised Afloat Assembly, a residency for contemporary art on a sailing boat, for the first time. This episode is a conversation between the artist Kresiah Mukwazhi and the curator Jeanette Pacher. It was recorded on February 17, 2023 in the context of the exhibition: Kresiah Mukwazhi Kirawa 17.2. – 16.4.2023 In Kirawa, her first solo exhibition at an Austrian institution, Kresiah Mukwazhi presents a new body of work consisting of textile paintings and video works. Her mixed-media collages, sculptures, videos, and performances are informed by her personal experiences and observations of gender-based violence, exploitation and abuse in her native Zimbabwe. In vibrant textile works, female figures perform seemingly vulgar and obscene gestures, hinting at the artist's inquiries into the arduous working and living conditions of female sex workers in Zimbabwe's patriarchal society. Against this backdrop of precarization and marginalization, Mukwazhi uses her powerful work as a form of visual activism, scrupulously carving out forms of resistance and self-empowerment. Mutual support and encouragement, together with humour as a weapon and means of resistance, are recurring themes in her work.
