Déjà vu is the feeling that you've already experienced something before, even though you know you haven't. The term comes from French and literally translates to "already seen". That's how this week's episode of FSQ feels to host Chuck Da Fonk, yet there's plenty of new music from Ray Mang, WhoMadeWho, Fred Thomas of the J.B.'s, Amy Douglas, and Budakid. Plus special album previews of the full length players from Crazy P, Yacht Rock Review, and Felipe Gordon. Tune into new broadcasts of FSQ, Thursdays from 6 - 8 PM EST / 11 PM - 1 AM GMT. On today's episode, I talk to musician Fred Thomas. Originally from Ypsilanti, Michigan, Fred started playing music as a teenager, and in 1994 founded the math rock band Chore. The band broke up two years later, and he joined the brilliant His Name Is Alive, and in 1999 started the well-known indie rock band Saturday Looks Good to Me. They would release eight albums, mostly on Polyvinyl, before Fred retired the band in 2013. As a solo artist, Fred has been recording albums since 2002, and his 14th album Window in the Rhythm was just released on Polyvinyl, and it is fantastic! In the 38th episode of the ECM podcast, we're joined by the trio of Alice Zawadzki, Fred Thomas and Misha Mullov-Abbado, who present a rare alchemy on their trio debut "Za Górami", fusing folk idioms from a multitude of sources with free flowing interplay and fluid structures. Inhabiting their own stylistic realm, the trio encompasses folk song, chamber music, improvisation and acoustic jazz, and presents the full span of their reach in a mesmerizing whole. Alice, Fred and Misha talk about the meaning behind the Polish term "Za Górami", the emotional impact of Ladino songs, how the three came together and where they meet in music as well as aobut the recording session at the Auditorio in Lugano, and more.
This episode kicks off with a look at how Starmer and Sunak did on the recent Question Time. We're not saying it went badly for Sunak but the PM was booed very loudly at the end so...And then Jemma and Marina decide to have a flutter. They bet that the Tories will cheat and lie their way right up to the election and it looks like they're both set to win because the latest scandal to hit the beleaguered party is 'fluttergate'. Wrongdoing has been admitted by AI generated Tory, Craig Williams, and yet Sunak chose to do nothing apart from put on an 'I'm angry face' for days on end. Still, he got there in the end. And then it's off to Plymouth to trawl through what Johnny Mercer has accused his Labour opponent, Fred Thomas, of. Warning - it's not dignified. The ladies finish with Under Rated Tweets as per and an invitation to a party. Michigan-based musician Fred Thomas joins us to listen to this 1970 album by American singer-songwriter Jackie DeShannon. This record comes hot on the heels of her biggest hit song, "Put a Little Love in Your Heart," and is an excellent exhibit for her skills as both a songwriter and performer. We're back from vacation with a short and sweet episode on the post-hardcore noise rock stylings of Unwound, a band that created, as Fred Thomas of AllMusic once said, "some of the more influential and lasting work of their era, with their cloudy moods and explosively tense group dynamics culminating in some truly transcendent albums." On this episode, we're diving into our favorite album from the group, 1996's Repetition. Musiciens - Elina Duni, chant - Rob Luft, guitare.

Welcome back to the podcast! (Welcome back Davina, that is) Producer/arranger/multi-instrumentalist/composer/cat lover Fred Thomas is my guest this episode. We spoke about his musical journey, which includes growing up in a household of a former CBSO concertmaster, making music playlists to fall asleep to, as well as how the key to learning lots of musical instruments is learning how to "cheat". Fred also spoke about his pandemic experience, as well as what he'd like to be if he weren't a musician. If you fancy supporting the podcast, you can do so here: ko-fi.com/asitcomespod. Over the course of the last 25 years, Polyvinyl Record Co. has grown from an idea in the heads of two excitable music fans into one of the more versatile and artistically driven record labels of its kind, working with a roster of well over 100 artists and consistently pushing independent music in new directions. In commemoration of this landmark birthday, we've put together The Polyvinyl Podcast to chronologically tell the story of how Polyvinyl has evolved over the last quarter of a century. With our host Fred Thomas, along with Polyvinyl staffers Natalie Dávila, Andy De Santis, and Seth Hubbard, we sat down and talked to just some of the folks who have been part of Polyvinyl's enduring legacy, conducting dozens of interviews with artists such as American Football, Alvvays, Japandroids, Jeff Rosenstock, Julia Jacklin, Kero Kero Bonito, of Montreal, Laura Jane Grace, STRFKR, Xiu Xiu and many more. With each episode, we'll get deep into every era, moving from DIY beginnings to where the label is at today, and reflect on how Polyvinyl and their family of artists have navigated the ever-changing landscape of the music industry while holding on to core beliefs of positivity, kindness, and good music for all you good people.
In today's episode, we recap Super Bowl LV, which ended in the Tampa Bay Buccaneers winning over the Kansas City Chiefs, 31-9. The Bucs win their 2nd Super Bowl title in franchise history and Tom Brady wins his 7th Super Bowl title in his career.
Host Sam Small and producer Sean Lang get into what it means to be DIY and speak with local DIY legend Fred Thomas
