Defending the Flexbone doesn't require installing a gimmick defense it requires trusting your base run fits and understanding how they account for the dive, quarterback, and pitch. Joe Daniel and Daniel Chamberlain break down how the Umbrella run fit system handles the triple option, what to look for when game planning a Flexbone team, and how to dictate option reads based on personnel and tendencies. Coaches will learn how to keep the plan simple, identify the player they can't allow to beat them, and make smart in-game adjustments without abandoning the defense their players execute best. 5:17 - Understanding the Flexbone Offense 9:15 - Flexbone Formation and Personnel Alignment 11:30 - Flexbone Base Plays and Concepts 14:01 - Why Your Base Defense Stops the Flexbone 15:20 - Fitting the Umbrella Defense to the Flexbone 20:07 - How Run Fits Handle All Option Offenses 22:46 - Avoiding Gimmick Defenses Against Triple Option 35:53 - Game Planning for the Flexbone 44:39 - Stopping the Flexbone Star Player 49:32 - In Game Adjustments Against the Flexbone Defending the Flexbone Offense Step 1: Build Your Defense Around Umbrella Run Fits Start with a run fit system that accounts for the dive, quarterback and pitch without changing your defense for the Flexbone. Every defender needs a consistent spill, force, alley or stay in coverage responsibility. READ: Coach the Umbrella Principle to Get Perfect Run Fits for Your Defense Step 2: Understand How Your Base Defense Handles Option Football Learn how the same run fits handle different forms of option football. Instead of installing a special Flexbone defense, understand how your existing responsibilities account for the dive, quarterback and pitch phases of the option. LISTEN: How to Defend the Spread Option Offense | FBCP S21E07 Step 3: Keep the Corner Out of the Run Fit Maintain a stay in coverage defender so the offense cannot use play action when the defense becomes overly aggressive against the option. Let the Free Safety attack the run while the Corner protects against the explosive pass. READ: How to Coach Football's Cover 3 Defense Step 4: Prepare Your Players to Execute Their Fits Turn the run fit responsibilities into reactions your players can execute without searching for the football. Train key reads, block reactions and the force and alley relationship so defenders can play their assignment against the deception of the Flexbone. READ: The Most Important Football Drill for Coaching Safeties Step 5: Build the Flexbone Game Plan From Film Identify what this specific Flexbone offense does best before adding adjustments. Find their best player, determine which phase of the option creates explosive plays, study their tendencies and decide where you want the football to go. DOWNLOAD: Defensive System Guide Step 6: Prepare Adjustments Without Abandoning Your Base Know where your base defense can be attacked and prepare answers before game day. Use fronts, tags, slants or added numbers only when the opponent gives you a reason to make the change. READ: Identify These Four Weaknesses in Your Defensive Playbook to Make Great Adjustments Step 7: Trust the System and Make Them Execute Do not panic when the Flexbone strings together first downs or controls the clock. Continue fitting the dive, quarterback and pitch, force the offense to execute repeatedly, and make adjustments only when you have identified a specific problem your base defense is not solving. August 5, 2026 - Season 17, Episode 4 of The Terrible Podcast is now in the can. In this Wednesday morning show, Alex Kozora and I start by talking about the latest set of transactions that the Pittsburgh Steelers have made. We also go over the health of the 91-man roster after six training camp practices. Steelers QB Aaron Rodgers has been in the mainstream news cycle because of several polarizing comments that he made during his recent interview on The Pat McAfee Show. We discuss the firestorm that Rodgers seems to have now restarted and if there are any concerns about it impacting the team or locker room with training camp now nearly halfway over. Rodgers has reportedly recently said that he might play some during the preseason, so we address what he had to say on the topic as well as what HC Mike McCarthy said on the possibility of his starting quarterback playing snaps during the exhibition contests slate. Alex and I discuss our thoughts on Rodgers possibly playing during the preseason and how it might impact the snaps of the other three quarterbacks on the roster should that ultimately happen. The Atlanta Falcons have now lost a key starter on defense due to a training camp season-ending injury so we discuss the impact that could have in Week 1 when they face the Steelers. The development of Steelers rookie OT Max Iheanachor seems to be one of the biggest storylines coming out of training camp with six practices now in the books, so Alex and I discuss that narrative. Later in this show, Alex and I also go over the other most notable storylines to come out of camp at this point. Alex recently wrote about his thoughts on each member of the Steelers 2026 draft class after six camp practices, so he recaps that post during this show. Former Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger made quite a prediction about the Steelers' 2026 offense and points scored this year during his recent podcast episode, so Alex and I address that later in this show. Are the Steelers currently in the market for a veteran free safety-type that can play on special teams? Should they be? Alex and I address those two questions based on recent comments made by McCarthy on the position. Alex and I also review a few notable quotes from several Steelers' players the last few days to round out this episode. This 69-minute episode also discusses several other minor topics not noted in the recap above and we end things by answering a few email questions we received from listeners. steelersdepot.com Learn more about your ad choices. Spotify DescriptionThis week's briefing covers three shifts every construction leader should be watching.Workplace incidents in construction eat four to six percent of project cost. The average contractor makes two to three percent margin. That single comparison changes how you should think about safety technology, and this week the Bricks and Bytes State of Construction Safety Tech report goes live to prove it.Owen breaks down what touches your P&L: why your safety records are turning into a financial asset insurers will price off, why your next major client may force this tech on you before any regulator does, and which part of the hype to ignore for now. Then: the AI price war. Anthropic just released the most expensive model on the market the same week the Wall Street Journal reported OpenAI is weighing drastic price cuts. What that contradiction means for your software bills, and the two moves to make before your next renewal. And a trip to Paris, inside Vinci, a 300,000 person company built from 4,000 separate businesses, to answer one question: how does anything new actually survive at that scale? The answer connects straight back to why safety platforms live or die.Free Safety report below:https://bricks-bytes.com/downloads/construction-safety/Join the argument in the comments of this week's LinkedIn post.

Jalen Hurts has not thrown a pick in camp, yet, AJ Brown and Devonta Smith have been almost unstoppable, Quez Watkins is showing he deserves to stay at WR3, Reed Blankenship continues to show why the Free Safety position belongs to him and finally, offensive coordinator Brian Johnson has begun to utilize screenplays with the running backs! Rookies Jalen Carter and Nolan Smith are making their impact on the defense. Nolan Smith has emerged as a leader to the Georgia Bulldog-loaded defense and Jalen Carter is showing people why he deserves to be a top-ten pick. As preseason games are nearing, what is the situation regarding the running back corps? Will D'Andre Swift emerge as the RB 1 heading into this season or will fellow acquisition Rashaad Penny take the spot?

Possibly but the hybrid safeties in the 2024 NFL Draft class are talented also. Miami's other safety, James Williams has the height, weight, and downhill speed to be a force as a strong safety or potentially linebacker. Locked On Patriots - Daily Podcast On The New England Patriots
The New England Patriots raised an eyebrow by cancelling their organized team activities scheduled for Thursday, May 25, thus delaying the media's first look at the team in 2023. Accordingly, host Mike D'Abate examines whether Pats head coach Bill Belichick might face additional scrutiny this season if the team struggles. He also provides his thoughts on why Jalen Mills may be the best fit to replace Devin McCourty at free safety and the team's assignment of jersey numbers to the Pats newest faces.
