It's that time of year! Holidays are upon us. Many of us will be gathering with our friends and family. Today we will be talking about the holidays, how we feel about Friendsgiving and if we think that it is helpful to the Christian community and families or not. Any time you are not able to connect with family for the holidays, having friends to gather with is an abundant blessing. There was an article written by The Atlantic in 2018 that talks about the rise of popularity in Friendsgivings and how millennials are more and more opting for Friendsgiving over traditional family Thanksgiving gatherings and the reasons behind it. The Atlantic is a very liberal, anti-family and anti-God. They went into how we do so much better when we are able to choose who our family members are. Friendsgiving traditions derived from a lot of people that were living homosexual lifestyles. They felt ostracized by their biological family so they banded together with one another to celebrate these holidays. We want to make sure to say that obviously, Friendsgivings are not wrong. If you're not careful though, you can really start to see how these expressions and options are really tearing down the biological family God has put in place. So much of family holidays and traditions can really be enriching to the family unit. It's one of those things that we want to reclaim, so to speak. If not reclaim, then solidify for our personal family going forward. We believe that when we elevate friendships to a family level, we are actually degrading and diminishing the importance the blood family that God has given us. This is something that we care about, because we clearly care about the family unit. We don't want to be insensitive either to different backgrounds that have dealt with stuff we haven't had to deal with when it comes to holidays. We are talking about the surface level opinion that family doesn't matter and that it's all the same, whether it's your neighbor or biological father. - Marriage Maximizer - Build A Masterpiece Marriage Whether you have been married for 30 years, or are just starting out on the adventure of a lifetime, this course is for you! https://www.nowthatwereafamily.com/Marriage-Maximizer Free webinar: https://www.nowthatwereafamily.com/marriage-maximizer-learn-more-1 - Top 5 Tuesday Join our weekly email list to keep up to date with the highlights of what is going on in our family life.https://www.nowthatwereafamily.com/top-5-tuesday-newletter - Looking for more Now That We're A Family resources? In the United States of America, Thanksgiving is portrayed as a time for friends and family to come together to celebrate the harvest, share stories and good food, and look forward to the future.But. Traditions, like everything else in modern life, only get more complicated the more we learn about them, and in a country like the United States, we know that this is certainly the case. What could be more ideal than having an entire day to oneself to do whatever your heart desires, whenever you like, in this day and age when so many people are feeling overconnected, overstimulated, busy, and hassled? It's safe to say that almost nothing about this year has been the typical, and there doesn't seem to be any relief in sight. That leaves you vulnerable to spending Thanksgiving alone, perhaps more so than in other years. There won't be any laid-back Friendsgivings when everyone just brings a dish and drinks are the main attraction. This means you won't have to take time off work, endure long airport lines, or rush through your commute to make your flight. No big family reunions where everyone acts like they're still in grade school and tensions run high. The idea of spending Thanksgiving by oneself may sound like heaven to some people. The year 2022 will be full of joyous celebrations for some, but for others the hardships of the year will be too much to take. Whatever your feelings about spending Thanksgiving on your own may be, there are ways to make the day more enjoyable than lonely.
Diana is the author of the NEW book Stop Talking About the Weather which focuses on creating and having more meaningful conversations and connecting deeper-- YES PLEASE. I absolutely LOVED our conversation and I am so excited to get my hands on her book. Do you ever meet somebody for the first time and find it so evident that they are living in their purpose just by their tone of voice?Diana saw a gap when it came to people (including herself) having meaningful conversations. The dinners filled with buzz and dings, Friendsgivings turning in to the same thing each year. In this episode we talk about the favorites part of her book, how she made the transition from teacher to entrepreneur and ultimately how DEEPEN the relationships in your life. On today's episode, we're doing something slightly different. We know 2020 has been tough, and we all had to sacrifice getting together for Friendsgivings or Friendsmases this year. Whether your past get-togethers were great or not, we hope this year has taught us to be more grateful for one another. In light of that, our Fam and Fed hosts, Cece and Fr. Raj, welcome their friends JREM and David Panduro for a digital get-together in order to revisit a story of a Friendsgiving from their past - Pokegiving 2018. Join us on this tale of relationships, excitement, fellowship, KBBQ, and according to Panduro, violence... Don't worry, there's also redemption, healing, and lessons learned. This is Forgiven and Fed.

On this episode, Ash and I sit down to outline how we approach the holidays. Typically, in a non-COVID world, this time of year is filled with family gatherings, hearty meals, and savory treats. Whether it's Friendsgivings, family traditions, Christmas cookies, or office parties, there always seems to be overwhelming amounts of temptation. How do you navigate the temptation? How do you indulge without feeling guilty? How do you prevent yourself from spiraling out of control? Today, we are going to answer all of those questions!
This week I don't even know what's happening, lol. We talk about Christina's friendsgiving day, Quinn meal prepping for once, the search for new catsitters, and a whole lot of random tangents. Classic. This episode was recorded on November 15, 2020.
We talk about India's new marriage laws, the Tesla Truck, and friendsgivings (and why they suck)!

This week Kellie and Claire talk all about the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday. They share some fun memories of childhood Thanksgivings gone by and current insights on Thanksgiving as military service families. They talk turkey, travel, traditions and they share thoughts on Black Friday and other marketing initiatives. Think of this episode like your favorite sweet potato casserole: filling, savory, and sweet--topped off with a little something extra!Advice Not GivenKellie shares about her Thanksgiving memories growing up and the main memory is all of the fun she had outdoors in the crisp fall air; she also remembers traveling to see extended family in the next state over. Food, cousins, fun! Kellie divulges that her mom’s delicious mashed potato recipe is actually boxed, instant potatoes and how as a kid she offended her grandmother in sharing that newsClaire’s childhood Thanksgivings included seeing both her dad and mom’s extended families. So. Many. People. But so much fun. Kids were always banished to the basement or screen porch to eat, followed by cousin touch football and mischief. This was Claire’s tradition until only about eight years ago when they have been too far to travel home for ThanksgivingIs there an unwritten code of Thanksgiving behavior--where to go and where to be? Which places do you eat food? It can be tricky navigating everyone else’s expectations for you!Claire explains the difference between stuffing and dressing to Kellie and they debate whether the difference is regional or personalKellie talks about how getting married complicated the Thanksgiving travels. Everyone. Everywhere. All spread out. It’s not possible to be everywhere for everyoneKellie shares about her first married Thanksgiving and her major turkey debacle. It looked nice and crispy on the outside but it was raw on the inside. (The thing that pops out of a turkey to let you know that is is “done” is actually called the Pop Out Timer.)Claire started cooking the full Thanksgiving meal once they entered military service; she spent time on the phone with her grandmother and had her teach her how to make the dressing of her childhood; she also shares how in the past few years, Ryan has been spatchcocking their Thanksgiving turkey which allows it to cook fully in under 45 minutes, frees up the oven for other cooking, and mostly just tastes amazingAs the years have gone on, Kellie talks about how now it has gotten harder and harder to coordinate holidays and travel with extended family. Now they do more Friendsgivings than anything. Now Thanksgiving is one of those “it just depends” kind of holidays; it’s less of a tradition and more of a “whatever works” thing nowClaire feels like now there isn’t a very predictable tradition, no rules, no expectations--some of their military Thanksgivings have been the most memorable of all--she also shares about how sometimes they will eat their main Thanksgiving meal on the day of, but then they have Leftovers Parties the day after where everyone brings all of their leftoversWe dish all about Black Friday… Claire doesn’t usually go, but if she does it is only for people watching purposes. She even made a funny Black Friday Bingo a fSupport the show (https://www.patreon.com/milspogurus)
