We begin this month's Previews episode with a dalliance into the realm of the risqué, as longtime friend of the show JK Woodward joins Murd, Chris and Ian to discuss his latest book, "The Con-a-Sutra: An Adult Guide to Full-Frontal Nerdity." (5:11-36:16) As you can probably tell by the title, this book is not all-ages, so earmuffs if you tend to listen or watch these episodes with children around. Then, after JK exits, we tackle Previews #393, DC Connect #13 and Marvel Previews #12, for books mostly set for release in August 2021. (2:38:59)
Kate graduated Harvard, left corporate America, then escaped to LA to follow her dream of becoming a comedy writer. If you've ever felt like the odd one out, seen mathematical sequences that help you understand life, know you're destined for more, or are ready, or already, to embrace your absolute nerdy self - this episode is for YOU. Kate Wiswell, author of Full Frontal Nerdity, joins us to talk about embracing your inner nerd, letting your smart girl out to play, and being unapologetically yourself! Kate is a mathematician and logician turned comedy writer living in LA who has figured out that you don't have to hide any part of yourself in order to be happy and successful. In fact, for Kate, it was only once she embraced and loved both sides of herself, as an analytical nerd and comedic writing genius. Kate's recent memoir, Full Frontal Nerdity, is a collection of essays she's written over the years. From using math formulas to help figure out who your soul mate is to sharing her absolute LOVE of gingers (we TOTALLY get it) to the rampant misogyny present in Hollywood and more, we guarantee you'll laugh, you'll cry, and you'll commiserate with her words. Could this be one of the realest and funniest books we've ever read? IT'S LIKELY, YO. If you get one thing out of this interview, it's how honest, down-to-earth, and freaking hilarious Kate is. Pretty sure we're best friends for life, now! You can buy Full Frontal Nerdity wherever you normally get your books, or right here on Amazon for all that ease (https://www.amazon.co.uk/Full-Frontal-Nerdity-Lessons-Loving-Living/dp/1506249876/ref=sr_1_15?keywords=full+frontal+nerdity&qid=1581591039&sr=8-15). Just in time for Valentines Day, we're joined by KS Wiswell, author of Full Frontal Nerdity - Lessons on Loving and Living With Your Brain. In addition to being an author, KS is also a screenwriter, an improv performer, and also a Kaplan instructor. We dive into the thought process behind her launching a blog and how that grew into publishing her first book. How did a background in improv help her connect topics that few others see as common? What is it like to share personal stories about love and life for everyone to see? How is improv like teaching and how can we use surprise, narrative, and relevance to make instruction more entertaining and compelling. KS walks us through all this and much more with plenty of laughs along the way.

Attack of the Killer Soundtrack #11 - Attack of Ookla the Mok! This week we are coming to you “live” from ConGlomeration, where we hang out with Rand and Adam, otherwise known as the band: Ookla the Mok! They are a musical duo with an interesting history in the business as well as mass amounts of geek knowledge that make them fit right in on our show. So we not only discuss pop culture references in music and movies, but along the way… we also build a terrific soundtrack. And as we all attempt to keep from getting Garfunkel-ized, we also mention… Fillmore!, sci fi and comic book conventions, The Police, Gym Class Heroes, my father imposing his taste on us, Medieval Evil Knievel, James Gunn, Bite Me Fanboy, The Big Bang Theory, two frontmen, an action figure of the guys that wrote the theme song, The Toy Collector, finding your tribe, oh Sting where is thy death, working with Disney, when they cut the song... they cut the whole scene, pretentious progressive bands, Marillion, my fingers don't stretch wide enough to play the gap that he's doing, Captain America: Winter's Soldier, Barenaked Ladies, I definitely don't remember a time when I wasn't a nerd, playing the bar and club scene, The Who, music rights on DVD, WKRP in Cincinnati, ok... we'll hire someone to rip that off, pop music, double-length concept albums, the music is serious even if the concept is funny, the legally distinguishable version, Because You Demanded It!, Full Frontal Nerdity, he doesn’t make movies with villains, The Specials, They say you should write about what you know... and we were college students. What the hell did we know?, playing me Frank Zappa when I was 4 years old, They Might Be Giants, Daria, Scott M. Gimple, who's the next Martin Scorsese?, The Eels, Cupid's Chokehold, not allowed to listen to the radio, fighting over song writing credit, giving up your likeness rights, Lawrence Kasdan, Chinese food and live-action heroes, the filk community and keep your money... just let me punch you in the face every couple of weeks. And... we're back! It's true, Scott and I took a bit of a break over the last few weeks. There was a long weekend in there due to Easter, and some life-stuff got in the way of things. But this podcast, being the labour of love that it is, is back. And it's back with sweet, nerdy vengeance. Because our guests are also all about labours of love. We spoke with Steven "Full Frontal Nerdity" Hodges about some of the interesting work he's been doing. And we spoke with Jay "I Quit" Runham. About quitting. Because his Jay n J podcast has ended and is turning into something different. And if you're a nerd for storytelling, we also have the winner of Edmonton Story Slam's Slam-Off on our show.
