Slán Irish Voice Two weeks ago Niall O'Dowd, founder of the Irish American newspaper The Irish Voice announced that it was to close after 36 years. The New York based Irish Voice and the Irish Echo were the principle sources of news for decades of Irish Americans and new Irish immigrants moving to the USA. Now the Irish Voice is gone. But a far sighted Niall O'Dowd realised some years ago the direction of travel for newspapers competing against the huge growth in online media services and founded the online Irish Central. Today IrishCentral.com gets over two million visitors monthly.Every Brilliant ThingListening, as I usually do on Sunday mornings, to Sunday with Miriam on RTE Radio  after Sunday Miscellany I really enjoyed Altan's tunes and Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh's craic. I was also very taken by the preview of Every Brilliant Thing which is being staged at The Galway Arts Festival.Theatre Director Andrew Flynn gave us an insight into this play by Duncan Macmillan. Essentially this is about a young man who starts, at the age of seven, to compile a list of those things which make his life worth living. This is while he is battling with the challenges of the different stages of his life, including his mother's attempt at suicide. War Crimes in JeninThe Israeli Government's assault on Jenin, the Palestinian refugee camp, in the occupied west Bank left 12 people dead and scores more injured. Using bombs, Apache helicopters, drones, bulldozers and hundreds of troops Israel's apartheid regime imposed a reign of terror on the 14,000 people who live in Jenin. More than 3,000 civilians were displaced from their homes.

This month we talk to Galway artist Tracy Bruen. Tracy was on the lineup of the first ever Limerick Lady event at the Limerick Milk Market in the summer of 2016. She joins us 7 years on to catch us up on her life and career. Over the last ten years, Tracy has toured extensively throughout Ireland and Europe. Her debut album "Mirror" was released in 2017. Singles from her sophomore album, "Waiting", released in January 2023, have received extensive national and regional radio play, with "Dream Away" and "Silence Crawls" both reaching the top ten in the RTÉ Radio charts.   Over the years, Tracy has shared stages with some of Ireland's best loved acts such as Mick Flannery and Mary Coughlan, as well as playing many of Ireland's major festivals including Electric Picnic, Body & Soul, Sunflower Fest and the Galway Arts Festival. She is continually and consistently developing her audience both at home and abroad, and was dubbed Original Solo Artist of the Year in 2015 by the Galway Advertiser.  On this episode, Tracy talks about the cost – personal, emotional, and financial – of being an independent artist, and the investment of energy that every show and new release takes. She talks about hitting her limits; about coming through breast cancer, and the age-old issue among the self-employed of not listening to her body when it told her it needed rest.  We explore how hard it is to survive in the music industry; how an artist chooses the order of songs on a record; the current landscape of the industry in terms of gender balance; and why Tracy no longer plays old songs that she doesn't connect with.  Find Tracy at www.facebook.com/TracyBruenMusic or on Instagram at @tracybruen “..a gentle beauty, Bruen's folk and classical stylings crystallising in the pure notes of her voice” — Evoke.ie You can download her music at www.tracybruen.bandcamp.com

“On Banjo” In sunny a San Diego high school somewhere in the 70s, while kids were listening to Aerosmith and Van Halen and Boston, Alison Brown was listening to bluegrass. She had started on guitar but gravitated to the banjo and by her teens, she was already pretty proficient on the instrument. She won first place at the Canadian National Banjo Championship, played a gig at the Grand Ole Opry and toured one summer with fiddler Stuart Duncan. After high school She headed to Harvard, knocked out an MBA at UCLA and then went to work as an Investment Banker. You know—the typical bluegrass story you hear all the time. Thinking music was a weekend thing, Brown had a nice balance going but then music decided to tip the scales. Alison Krauss flashed the bat signal for a banjo player and Brown answered the call, and gave up her Wall Street environs for a life in music. And what a life it has been. An internationally recognized virtuoso on banjo, Brown has played with Alison Krauss, Michelle Shocked, fronted her own Alison Brown Quartet, toured all over the world, from Japan to South America, along the way playing The Kennedy Center, the Newport Folk Festival, The Cambridge Folk Festival in England and the Galway Arts Festival in Ireland. With a Grammy in her trophy case along with multiple Grammy nominations, features on CBS Sunday Morning, NPRs All Things Considered and close to 15 critically lauded albums under her belt, including her fabulous new one No Banjo, Alison Brown is an artistic force. And what of On Banjo? Well, putting it simply, it's a stunner. A deftly played album filled with technical prowess, musical finesse and compositional dexterity, On Banjo is a song cycle that's celebratory, joyful and cathartic. Brown is the co-founder of Compass Records Group, she serves on the Board of the Nashville Chapter of the Recording Academy and she's the co-chair of the Steve Martin Banjo Prize. She's kind of a big deal and guess what? She's as nice as can be. www.alisonbrown.com www.bombshellradio.com www.stereoembersmagazine.com www.embersarts.com www.alexgreenonline.com Twitter: @emberseditor IG: @emberspodcast Email: editor@stereoembersmagazine.com

In 1994, Kimberly Brown embarked on a lifelong dream of travelling the globe overland.  Her trip innocently began in San Francisco on a hippie bus called the Green Tortoise. She worked the Galway Arts Festival in Ireland, traversed Russia on the Trans-Siberian railway, and rode horses on the high Mongolian plains. If it hadn't been for a nasty stomach bug she caught in China, she may never have volunteered as a teacher at Mae La refugee camp on the Thai/Burmese border in the middle of a war.  Immersing herself in the ways of the Karen people, Kimberly discusses some of the harrowing events she experienced and witnessed (including having her own life threatened twice), the enduring spirit of a country less people, and how the refugees healed her and changed her life forever. Now a naturopathic doctor, in much due to her experience with the Karen refugees, you can find Dr. Kimberly Brown at www.sanjoseintegrativemedicine.com and follow her at: https://www.instagram.com/drkimberlybrown/ https://www.facebook.com/drkimberlybrownFind out more at www.ruthmillingtonauthor.comDon't forget to RATE, REVIEW AND SUBSCRIBE on your podcast app. It means you will be the first to hear when new episodes come out and it will help others to find this podcast!Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/ruthmillingtonauthor/Twitter: https://twitter.com/RuthMillington1Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/ruth.millington.52/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/ruth-millington-54915b24/YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCSShare Your Story  Have an extreme travel story to tell? Shock World Service 096: I Didn't Want The Night To End (Cian Ó Cíobháin) 19/10/2020 Galway, Ireland 1. Phil Lynott - One Wish (Demo with Huey Lewis) Phil Lynott's friendship with Huey Lewis dated back to the mid-70s and this extraordinary demo, one of the last songs Lynott wrote, was never officially released. 2. John Cale - Dying On The Vine The eternally creative John Cale recorded this around the same time that Lynott collaborated with Lewis on the previous track. 3. OMD - Souvenir Possibly the most beautiful song in the entire OMD catalogue features the band's keyboard player Paul Humphreys on vocals. 4. Karen Marks - Cold Café Wistful new wave track from Melbourne from '81. 5. Clannad - Theme From Harry's Game Regularly played on the radio in the 80s, I had almost forgotten about it until I happened upon a Twitter thread admiring it no end. 6. Lani Hall - Never Say Never Again From an unofficial Bond movie from '83, I've always had a soft spot for the title track, sung by Lani Hall, who was married to Herb Alpert and briefly fronted Sérgio Mendes & Brasil '66. 7. Sparks - I Want To Hold Your Hand Stunning cover from 1976 of The Beatles standard which was introduced to me by Barry Murphy of The Last Sound. 8. Chris Clark - How About You Chris Clark is one of a very small number of white performers who recorded on Motown during the 60s. 9. Love - My Little Red Book I first heard this when composer Burt Bacharach performed it at Galway Arts Festival in 2019. Next morning, I was on the hunt and discovered a number of covers, including this one from 1965 from the mighty Love. 10. BEAK> - Yatton From one of Geoff Barrow's post-Portishead Bristol bands. 11. De Ambassade - Geen Genade Like the previous track, this Dutch song has the spirit of 1980s new wave all over it, though it came out in 2016. 12. Turquoise Days - Grey Skies Astonishing synth-pop classic from ‘84 from a duo based in Jersey on the Channel Islands, who released a number of cassettes in the 80s. 13. Ariel Pink - Stray Here With You Only a genius like Ariel Pink would have an unreleased pop gem like this in his locker. It surfaced last year on his ‘Oddities Sodomies Vol 2' compilation of previously unreleased tracks. 14. Toasted Heretic - Another Day, Another Riot I've been after a good quality version of this track for ages - one of Toasted Heretic's greatest moments, which will forever remind me of moving to Galway. I was thrilled when Neil Farrell, who used to record with the band (and also records as The Melancholy Thug), gifted me with a high quality version a few months ago. Indeed, I borrowed from the lyrics to give this podcast its title. 15. Jan St. Werner - VS Cancelled Jan St. Werner of Mouse On Mars collaborated with The Fall's Mark E Smith as Von Südenfed. This track features Smith reading an email from Domino detailing why the band had been dropped by the label. 16. The Fall - Paint Work The Fall's 8th studio LP ‘This Nation's Saving Grace' is a masterpiece and this ramshackle track is one of its defining moments. 17. Billy Fury - I'm Lost Without You This track almost sounds like a blueprint for the music of early Tindersticks. Indeed, Morrissey was also a huge fan of this 60s Scouse singer. 18. The Kinks - I Go To Sleep (Demo) We kicked off with a demo and so we'll part with one. Written by Ray Davies, it was never formally recorded by The Kinks, but has been covered many times since. https://cianociobhain.com/ https://www.rte.ie/rnag/
