-Original Show Notes from May 20, 2022- Stuart Duncan is the dad of an autistic son, and he's also autistic himself. So when he learned that autistic Minecraft players were being bullied on popular servers, he set out to create a safe and inclusive virtual space for the autism community. The moment he announced it, parents lined up in droves, hoping their kids could join. Today, the server has 15,000 members, and Stuart has quit his job as a software developer to manage, moderate, and customize the server for kids (and their families) who communicate and play their own way. Stuart joins us to discuss the origins of Autcraft, why he still relies on the Java Edition of Minecraft to serve his community, and the power of safe, custom virtual worlds for neurodiverse players. If you're as moved as we are by Stuart's story, you can support Autcraft on Patreon to keep "The Best Place on the Internet" going for years to come: https://www.patreon.com/autcraft https://www.autcraft.com/ Learn more about your ad choices. It's a record that's really important to Chris, and also played a key role in the early days of both The Infamous Stringdusters and Punch Brothers.Chris talks about first hearing the record, why it grabbed his attention so much and why it holds a key place in not only Bela's output, but also in the rich tradition of progressive, instrumental string band music. We also talk about the remarkable contributions made by the players Bela assembled for this record, including Sam Bush, Mark Schatz, Jerry Douglas, Stuart Duncan, Mark O'Connor and, of course, Tony Rice.It was a fascinating conversation to get to have. Drive is one of my favourite records and I know it's a favourite of so many bluegrass fans and players too. Thanks Chris and here's to the next 400 episodes!Happy picking!Matt Support the Show.===- Sign up to get updates on new episodes - Free fiddle tune chord sheets- Here's a list of all the Bluegrass Jam Along interviews- Follow Bluegrass Jam Along for regular updates: Instagram Facebook - Review us on Apple Podcasts

Bluegrass banjo legend Tony Trischka joins us this week to discuss the making of his new album, 'Earl Jam.' He also gives us a mini-masterclass into the world of Earl Scruggs. The story behind 'Earl Jam' is truly remarkable: Upon receiving a USB drive full of never-before-released Earl Scruggs home recordings from the '80s and '90s, Trischka decided to transcribe his favorite moments and solos, note-for-note. His playing of these transcriptions became the foundation for the album, which also features guest spots by Billy Strings, Molly Tuttle, Brittany Haas, Stuart Duncan and others. It's like hearing a completely new Earl Scruggs record in 2024. Just as memorable as the album are some Trischka's stories about Scruggs and his influence. Somehow, King Curtis Ravi Shankar, Petticoat Junction, Steve Martin, and KFC all get mentioned...and a lot more!   https://www.tonytrischka.com/earl-jam A First Timer's Guide to the Fretboard Summit: https://www.fretboardjournal.com/columns/a-first-timers-guide-to-the-fretboard-summit/ Subscribe to the Fretboard Journal print edition and reserve your copy of Fretboard Journal 54:  https://shop.fretboardjournal.com/products/fretboard-journal-annual-subscription This week's show is sponsored by: StewMac: https://stewmac.sjv.io/R5jvRR (Affiliate link) Izotope: https://www.izotope.com (Use the code FRET10 to save 10%) Stringjoy Strings: https://stringjoy.com (Use the code FRETBOARD to save 10% off your first order) Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar: https://mmguitarbar.com Peghead Nation: https://www.pegheadnation.com (Get your first month free or $20 off any annual subscription with the promo code FRETBOARD at checkout). Music Makers and Soul Shakers Podcast with Steve Dawson

Alison Brown is a Grammy Winning banjo player, composer and producer who has made a bunch of great albums under her own name but also as a sideperson and collaborator with artists like Alison Krauss, Michelle Shocked, and Stuart Duncan. She started playing as a youngster, first on dobro and then switched over to banjo. She spent her early years cutting her teeth at bluegrass events and venues around California, before veering away from music in the 80's to get her MBA from UCLA! Alison was working full-time in finance when she realized that she just didn't want to be doing that and dove back head-first into music. She joined Union Station with Alison Krauss in the late 80's and has never looked back. That band won a grammy in 1990, and then she joined Michelle Shocked's band and became her bandleader for a few years. Alison started her own quartet and has been recording albums with them since the early 90's. Her label, Compass Records, has grown to be one of the leading labels for roots music in the world, and her and and her husband Gary West run the whole thing out of the office and studio on music row. The studio itself is an incredible piece of history, known at one time as “Hillbilly Central” it's where some of the iconic records were made for Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson. Alison's latest record “On Banjo” is a great example of her killer playing but also her composing and arranging skills. It features guests like Steve Martin, Sierra Hull, Sharon Isbin and the Kronos quartet and explores styles like Brazillian choro and bossa nova as well as bluegrass and old time. You can keep up with what she's up to, and get all her tour dates at alisonbrown.comBe sure to listen to the Accompanying Songs Playlist which contains some of the artist's work, plus many of the songs we discuss on the show:Playlist on Spotify / Playlist on Apple MusicIf you enjoyed this episode, please consider supporting the show with a donation or Patreon subscriptionThe show's website can be found at www.makersandshakerspodcast.comYour fearless host, Steve Dawson can be found at www.stevedawson.ca Become a member at https://plus.acast.com/s/mmasspodcast. Episode 246: Alison Brown found her life's work early when she started playing banjo as a pre-teen growing up in southern California. But it took some time and real life experience - a Harvard degree, another MBA and a couple of years in banking - before she finally gave herself permission to chase a music career. She toured with Alison Krauss in her early days and then formed her own bands, earning her rep as an innovative, jazz-oriented virtuoso player. She's released about a dozen albums of her own composing, including the latest On Banjo, featuring guests like Stuart Duncan, Steve Martin and Anat Cohen. We sat down in the studio of Compass Records, which she co-founded with her husband more than 25 years ago, for a wide-ranging talk about her instrument, her destiny, and her latest music. Also in the hour, a teaser of my interview with Nashville journalist Tim Ghianni.

“On Banjo” In sunny a San Diego high school somewhere in the 70s, while kids were listening to Aerosmith and Van Halen and Boston, Alison Brown was listening to bluegrass. She had started on guitar but gravitated to the banjo and by her teens, she was already pretty proficient on the instrument. She won first place at the Canadian National Banjo Championship, played a gig at the Grand Ole Opry and toured one summer with fiddler Stuart Duncan. After high school She headed to Harvard, knocked out an MBA at UCLA and then went to work as an Investment Banker. You know—the typical bluegrass story you hear all the time. Thinking music was a weekend thing, Brown had a nice balance going but then music decided to tip the scales. Alison Krauss flashed the bat signal for a banjo player and Brown answered the call, and gave up her Wall Street environs for a life in music. And what a life it has been. An internationally recognized virtuoso on banjo, Brown has played with Alison Krauss, Michelle Shocked, fronted her own Alison Brown Quartet, toured all over the world, from Japan to South America, along the way playing The Kennedy Center, the Newport Folk Festival, The Cambridge Folk Festival in England and the Galway Arts Festival in Ireland. With a Grammy in her trophy case along with multiple Grammy nominations, features on CBS Sunday Morning, NPRs All Things Considered and close to 15 critically lauded albums under her belt, including her fabulous new one No Banjo, Alison Brown is an artistic force. And what of On Banjo? Well, putting it simply, it's a stunner. A deftly played album filled with technical prowess, musical finesse and compositional dexterity, On Banjo is a song cycle that's celebratory, joyful and cathartic. Brown is the co-founder of Compass Records Group, she serves on the Board of the Nashville Chapter of the Recording Academy and she's the co-chair of the Steve Martin Banjo Prize. She's kind of a big deal and guess what? She's as nice as can be. www.alisonbrown.com www.bombshellradio.com www.stereoembersmagazine.com www.embersarts.com www.alexgreenonline.com Twitter: @emberseditor IG: @emberspodcast Email: editor@stereoembersmagazine.com

Music Makers and Soul Shakers Podcast with Steve Dawson

This week on the show is the great mandolin player, singer and songwriter Sierra Hull. Sierra is a monster player, and while she's still really young, she's been making records of her own for over 15 years now. The latest one, called “25 Trips” came out right around the pandemic, so her touring was curtailed for a while, but she's back at it now in full force, playing with her band and also with Cory Wong and Bela Fleck, being a major part of Bela's “My Bluegrass Heart” album and shows earlier this year. I was really interested in talking to her about that because I can't imagine how crazy that must be to be sitting in a room full of your heros that you grew up listening to and learning from and suddenly they're your peers and you're right in the mix with all of them. In the bluegrass world, that project doesn't get any heavier - Jerry Douglas, Bryan Sutton, Sam Bush, Chris Thile, Noam Pikelny, Stuart Duncan, Billy Strings, Molly Tuttle - they're all involved, and it's a great album. Sierra has made some great solo albums with Allison Krauss and Bela Fleck producing, and on the latest one, “25 Trips”, she's co-producing with a killer engineer named Shani Gandhi. It's definitely rooted in bluegrass, but steps out into some more experimental territory as well with some innovative sounds and production ideas. The crew on this album includes Justin Moses, Viktor Krauss, Bryan Sutton, Paul Franklin, Jano Rix and lots more. So we got to talk about how she approaches making music, and all about how she prepares as a side-person for some of the heavy gigs she's involved in these days.Sierra is constantly out on tour and you can keep up with what she's doing and where to see her at: sierrahull.comListen to the accompanying playlist for this episode here, which features the artist's own music, plus many of the songs that were discussed during the show. This episode is brought to you by Izotope - check out their amazing recording software at: www.izotope.comThanks for your support, and your fearless host, Steve Dawson can be found at: www.stevedawson.ca

Richard Smith was born in Beckenham, England. He picked up the guitar when he was five years old after watching his father playing an Atkins and Travis version of "Down South Blues". He begged his father, a longtime Atkins admirer, to introduce him to the fingerpicking style. Smith soon became a child prodigy on the guitar. As a kid he could play the entire discographies of Django Reinhardt and Chet Atkins. At the age of 11 he shared the stage with his idol when Atkins invited Smith to play with him at Her Majesty's Theatre in London. He was also influenced by guitarist Big Jim Sullivan and briefly studied jazz guitar with Shane Hill at Warlingham School, Surrey. He formed the Richard Smith Guitar Trio with his brothers Rob and Sam before marrying American cellist Julie Adams and moving to Nashville, Tennessee in 1999. He founded the Hot Club of Nashville, a jam band with a varying lineup that included John Jorgenson, Pat Bergeson, Bryan Sutton, and Stuart Duncan, combining gypsy jazz and western swing. Smith performs as a solo act and a duo with his wife. His repertoire includes country, bluegrass, blues, ragtime, folk, jazz, pop, and classical music. A 2018 video of Smith performing Scott Joplin's "The Entertainer" went viral on YouTube, amassing over 12 million views as of April, 2022.

Autistic children love Minecraft as much as anyone, but they're often bullied by other kids on multiplayer servers. When software developer and dad Stuart Duncan learned of this, he set out to create a private, safe Minecraft server exclusively for autistic kids and their families. The moment he shared it, he got 300 emails from parents who desperately wanted in, Today, Autcraft has a community of 15,000 kids with autism and their parents, and Stuart quit his job to run the server fulltime and meet the needs of his players. He shares how the server changed the lives of kids and parents, Autcraft's accessibility features that Minecraft has implemented into its game for all players, and why social scientists study the server for autism research. A 2018 video of Smith performing Scott Joplin's "The Entertainer" went viral on YouTube, amassing over 10.1 million views as of April, 2021. Richard won the National Fingerstyle Guitar Championship at the Walnut Valley Festival in Winfield, Kansas in 2001. The National Thumbpickers Hall of Fame named him Thumbpicker of the Year in 2008 and inducted him into the Hall of Fame in 2009. He received the Golden Thumbpick Award by the Association of Fingerstyle Guitarists. #richardsmith

You're listening to the Westerly Sun's podcast, where we talk about the best local events, new job postings, obituaries, and more. First, a bit of Rhode Island trivia. Today's trivia is brought to you by Perennial. Perennial's new plant-based drink “Daily Gut & Brain” is a blend of easily digestible nutrients crafted for gut and brain health. A convenient mini-meal, Daily Gut & Brain” is available now at the CVS Pharmacy in Wakefield. Now for some trivia. Did you know that french academic scholar and administrator, Francis Lawrence, was born in Woonsocket? He taught at Tulane for over 30 years, eventually becoming academic vice president, provost, dean of the graduate school, and eventually the 18th president of Rutgers University. After retiring in 2002, he returned to teaching at Rutgers. Now, for our feature story: Two-plus years and more than $12 million later, Westerly's United Theatre, once the go-to downtown movie spot — a facility that was built in 1926 as a vaudeville house, transitioned into a movie theater when films came into fashion, then closed its doors in 1986 when downtown Westerly temporarily lost its luster — opened its doors to movie-lovers Friday afternoon with 4:45 p.m. screenings of Marvel's "Black Widow" and Ahmir "Questlove" Thompson's must-see music documentary, "Summer of Soul." Tony Nunes, the theater's artistic director said "We are now a full-time theater. It's been a long time coming, but movies are back in Westerly. We are all good to go. From now on, Nunes continued, film-lovers will be able to screen movies seven days a week, 365 days a year. Two of the United's three movie screens opened Friday, Nunes said, and the third, the balcony cinema, will open next week. "You might say this is a bit of a soft opening," he added, noting that the official ribbon-cutting will take place on July 24. An exhibit featuring a show called "Faces of Westerly," by photographer Josh Behan, will be on display by then, and a video called "Voices of Westerly" will be shown in the black box theater. "We plan to have one-hundred-and-seventy-six film screenings in July alone," said Nunes one afternoon last week as he sat in the United's balcony watching workers put the final touches on the black box theater where films will be screened and performances and gatherings will take place. "We'll have matinées and show movies from one to ten p.m. each day." Grammy award-winning songwriter and musician Aoife O'Donovan, co-founder of the bands I'm With Her and Crooked Still, who has been a featured vocalist on "The Goat Rodeo Sessions" with Yo-Yo Ma, Stuart Duncan, Edgar Meyer, and Chris Thile, and who spent a decade contributing to the radio variety shows "Live From Here” and “A Prairie Home Companion," will be the first musician to perform in the renovated theater when she stops by on her way to play at the Newport Folk Festival on July 23rd. Nunes, who has been working on the United renovation for the last seven years — five as a volunteer — said there is now a larger staff in place, with five new people joining him and Executive Director Lisa Utman Randall. Back in the theater, days before the final approvals were in place, and while he juggled a seeming endless array of "moving parts," Nunes grew thoughtful. "I love our name and I love what we stand for," said Nunes. "We're uniting the community through the arts." For updates, tickets and performance dates, visit unitedtheatre.org. On this episode of Acoustic Music Talk, Brad Apple talks with amazing acoustic bassist, Missy Raines. GRAMMY® nominated Missy Raines was named 2020 International Bluegrass Music Association Bass Player of the Year, for the 9th time, more than any other bass player in the history of the organization. Missy Raines has proven herself without doubt as an iconic bluegrass instrumentalist. But with her newest release, Royal Traveller, Raines has stepped into the spotlight as a songwriter for the first time. The album digs deep into Raines' family life and her upbringing in West Virginia. Featuring previous and current members of her live band, as well as cameos from other bluegrass greats such as Stuart Duncan and Tim O'Brien, the album is a gorgeous look into the perspective, history, and musical influences of one of Nashville’s most beloved musicians, Missy Raines. Royal Traveller was nominated for a GRAMMY® for “Best Bluegrass Album” and is Raines' third album for Compass Records. It’s the first produced by Compass' owner and founder, and renowned banjo player Alison Brown. "I went into this project with Alison with the mindset that I wanted to stretch myself and see what I could do. I think we achieved what I was looking for, which is something further reaching and bigger than what I would have accomplished on my own," says Raines. In 1998, Raines became the first woman to win IBMA's Bass Player of the Year award and she went on to win the title repeatedly for the next several years. Royal Traveller highlights this particular piece of Raines' history with the stand out track “Swept Away”, which features the 5 first women to win IBMA instrumentalist awards, Raines, Brown, Sierra Hull, Becky Buller, and Molly Tuttle. “Swept Away” was named 2018 IBMA Recorded Event of the Year. Missy’s version of the iconic Flatt & Scruggs “Darlin Pal(s) of Mine” (from Royal Traveller), was named 2019 Instrumental Recording of the Year by the IBMA. The tune features Alison Brown on banjo, Todd Phillips on bass and Mike Bub on bass. In 2020, Missy shared IBMA’s Song of the Year award along with co-writers, Becky Buller and Alison Brown for “Chicago Barn Dance”, a song written specifically for the Chicago-based band, Special Concensus, and their latest album of the same name. With her new album, Raines tells her story with a vulnerability and bold honesty that rings clear, spoken through beautiful arrangements and well chosen musical collaborations. With nods to many of the varied and challenging chapters of her life, the songs speak volumes of Raines tenacity and musicianship, and her ability to rise to bluegrass fame despite the various confinements of the times. The listener is presented with a striking window into the up and down ride of a very royal traveller, the one and only Missy Raines. www.acousticmusictalk.net https://www.missyraines.com/ https://www.facebook.com/missyrainesmusic https://www.instagram.com/missyraines https://twitter.com/thenewhip https://www.youtube.com/missyrainesmusic --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/brad-apple/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/brad-apple/support

The Fightin' Side of Me". In this week's episode we're featuring the debut country record for Louisiana's Alecia Nugent: "The Old Side Of Town" (2020). After three top-notch bluegrass albums on Rounder Records, Nugent elected to slow down and came off the road to spend more time raising her three daughters. Life got in the way, however, and after an extended period at home but with the intention of recording another project, Nugent moved back to Nashville, secured a backer and her first album in ten years was born. Even during the making of her third album "Hillbilly Goddess", the Rounder folks noted that Nugent had a penchant for picking country-flavoured songs - so it seemed natural that "The Old Side Of Town" would be her country music debut. Classic country too - fiddle from Stuart Duncan and steel from maestro Paul Franklin under the deft production of Keith Stegall - Nugent's return to form is steeped in tradition and is an intensely personal, emotional and enjoyable album. The tearjerking tribute to her Dad in "They Don't Make 'Em Like My Daddy Anymore" is the album's lynchpin; a cover of mentor/employer Tom T. Hall's "The Old Side Of Town" is right on point and the Texas shuffle style of "Tell Fort Worth I Said Hello" is another highlight. Thoroughly enjoyable comeback which will likely appeal to fans of both country and bluegrass music.

Jerry Douglas in the encyclopedias as the singular innovator of the Dobro, that horizontal acoustic slide guitar developed in the early 20th century. But that's like calling Charlie Parker a saxophone player. Jerry is a consummate creator who found an unlikely muse and who made the most of it. Among the vast catalog, Douglas has recorded or performed with: Charlie Waller's Country Gentlemen, The Whites, Ricky Skaggs, JD Crowe, Dolly Parton, Ray Charles, James Taylor, Garth Brooks, Elvis Costello, Bill Frisell and it just goes on and on. Since the mid 90s he's been a key voice, instrumentally and vocally, in Alison Krauss and Union Station. Recently he formed the Earls of Leicester, a deeply traditional bluegrass band that channels the work and feeling of Flatt & Scruggs, and they promptly won every award in sight. And for many of us, the hub of the wheel of Jerry's world has been his lifelong collaborations with fellow newgrass superstars Bela Fleck, Sam Bush, Stuart Duncan, Tony Rice and Edgar Meyer. And yet for all his adventures, Jerry the  band leader and composer never quite found the path to writing and recording in an idiom he's loved his whole life. Until now. He's recently released a jazz fusion record called What If.  Also on the show, a short interview with Anna Bek Schwaber, producer and director of The Porchlight Sessions, a profile of the bluegrass community in the 21st century that's newly out as a web pay per view documentary.
