Send us a textOn this week's episode, we take a listen to another Listener's Pick: Thin Lizzy's sixth studio album, Jailbreak from 1976. It took some time, but by the time they recorded Jailbreak, Thin Lizzy's had figured out their formula and Jailbreak became their breakout LP. Showcasing the tuneful songs of Phil Lynott and the expert twin guitar interplay of Scott Gorman and Brian Robertson, the album is the ultimate combination or power and melody.Lyrically,  Lynott tapped into mythos of both Irish folklore and the American west to create his own version of story songs written by the likes of Bruce Springsteen and Van Morrison. Musically, Jailbreak is an absolute blast to listen to, providing future inspiration for both punk bands and bands of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal.  Visit us at www.tappingvinyl.com.

Rockshow episode 210 The Story of Phil Lynott and Thin LizzyPhilip Parris Lynott, born on August 20, 1949, in West Bromwich, England, and raised in Dublin, Ireland, was the charismatic frontman, bassist, and primary songwriter of Thin Lizzy—one of the most influential rock bands of the 1970s and early 80s. Known for his poetic lyrics, distinctive voice, and commanding stage presence, Lynott played a crucial role in shaping the band's signature sound, blending hard rock with Celtic influences and storytelling. The Formation of Thin Lizzy (1969-1972)Lynott formed Thin Lizzy in Dublin in 1969, along with drummer Brian Downey, guitarist Eric Bell, and organist Eric Wrixon (who left shortly after). The band was named after a character from a comic book (The Dandy's “Tin Lizzie”). They signed with Decca Records and released their self-titled debut album in 1971, but mainstream success eluded them at first.Their breakthrough came in 1972 with their reworking of the traditional Irish folk song “Whiskey in the Jar,” which became a major hit in Ireland and the UK. However, after their next few albums underperformed, Eric Bell left the band, leading to a major lineup change that would define their classic sound. The Classic Thin Lizzy Lineup (1974-1980)After Bell's departure, Thin Lizzy transitioned into a twin-guitar rock powerhouse. Lynott recruited Scott Gorham and Brian Robertson, forming the band's legendary dual-guitar attack. Their first major success in this era came with “The Boys Are Back in Town” (1976) from the Jailbreak album, which remains their most famous song.Notable Albums & Songs:•Jailbreak (1976) – “The Boys Are Back in Town,” “Jailbreak” •Johnny the Fox (1976) – “Don't Believe a Word” •Bad Reputation (1977) – “Dancing in the Moonlight,” “Bad Reputation”•Live and Dangerous (1978) – Regarded as one of the greatest live rock albums of all time•Black Rose: A Rock Legend (1979) – “Do Anything You Want To,” “Waiting for an Alibi,” “Black Rose”Thin Lizzy became known for their explosive live performances, poetic lyrics, and blending of hard rock with Irish storytelling. However, internal tensions, particularly with Brian Robertson's unreliability, led to lineup changes. The Later Years & Decline (1980-1983)Thin Lizzy disbanded in 1983 after a farewell tour, marking the end of an era.Phil Lynott's Solo Career & Tragic DeathAfter Thin Lizzy, Lynott pursued a solo career, releasing two albums:•Solo in Soho (1980) – “King's Call,” “Dear Miss Lonelyhearts”•The Philip Lynott Album (1982) He also collaborated with musicians like Gary Moore (“Out in the Fields”) and worked on various projects. However, his drug addiction worsened, and in late 1985, he collapsed due to complications from heroin and alcohol abuse.Phil Lynott passed away on January 4, 1986, at the age of 36.Thin Lizzy's LegacyDespite Lynott's passing, Thin Lizzy's influence remains strong. Various members have carried on the band's music, with Scott Gorham leading tribute tours. Lynott's lyrical storytelling, stage presence, and fusion of Celtic themes with hard rock inspired countless musicians, including Metallica, Iron Maiden, and U2.Today, Lynott is celebrated as Ireland's first great rock star, with statues, documentaries, and tributes keeping his legacy alive.Essential Listening for New Fans: Phil Lynott remains one of rock's most beloved and tragic figures—a poet, a rocker, and a legend whose music still resonates today.http://www.thinlizzy.org/phil.htmlhttps://youtube.com/@thinlizzyofficial?si=HtxqVIFF3_AuRiWrhttps://www.thinlizzyofficial.com/https://www.facebook.com/share/15serR1qV2/?mibextid=wwXIfrhttps://x.com/thinlizzy_?s=21&t=Mzw5de5zsR-SDDbhyzH0Lghttps://www.instagram.com/thinlizzy?igsh=bjE3aXRvdnhnMDVh#ThinLizzy #PhilLynott #RockLegends #ClassicRock #IrishRock #TheBoysAreBackInTown #Jailbreak #LiveAndDangerous #70sRock #HardRock #WhiskeyInTheJar #BlackRose #DancingInTheMoonlight #RockNRoll #LegendaryBands

In this week's show, Phil talks to Patrick Lynott, the Head of UK Admissions & Placement at Boolean, a tech education company that teaches their students to be software engineers and then helps them to land their first job in tech. Patrick talks about why people should consider a career as a software engineer and how Boolean can help. He also discusses the positive ways in which investment is changing the shape of the tech sector in the UK, the best ways for aspiring engineers to begin their careers, and the best resources that can energise your own tech career plans.   KEY TAKEAWAYS: WHY SHOULD I CONSIDER BECOMING A SOFTWARE ENGINEER? Software engineering and coding provides a problem-solving approach and set of challenges that many with an analytical mind find appealing. The career prospects are incredible, and potential for diversity and growth is limitless.   WHAT DO I NEED TO LEARN? Begin by building a mental map of the industry itself, We can best achieve this by hearing from people in the industry through YouTube, blogs, vlogs and other social media. Forming this map of the sector in your own mind will give you a far better idea of what kind of role you'd like to play in it.   WHAT'S THE BEST WAY TO GET STARTED? Networking in places such as LinkedIn and Eventbrite are a great way to begin getting to know people and the kinds of skills that have helped them. Resources such as Codebar can help those at the start of their tech journey, and pairs you with people already in the industry, and allow you to solve problems together.   WHAT'S THE STATE OF THE TECH INDUSTRY IN THE UK (AND THE WORLD) RIGHT NOW? The tech industry is a boom town right now, and has proved resilient and robust, even through the pandemic. The UK right now is the third hottest area for investment in tech, behind only the US and China. Most investment is staying in the south of the country, and specifically London. This has led to a hiring frenzy in the sector.   HOW DOES A NEWBIE OR JUNIOR DEV GET HIRED? The first step is to combat any feelings of impostor syndrome and build confidence in the skills you've accumulated. Gathering effective feedback will help you to identify any potential parts that may need development in your skill set. The next step is correctly identify the terms being used when it comes to tech roles, and better select the career path you want.   WHAT IS BOOLEAN AND HOW IS IT DIFFERENT FROM OTHER TRAINING PROVIDERS? Boolean is an online international tech academy that began in Italy three years ago, and which has partnered with 800+ companies on its hiring platform. It follows a “Six months course with six months career coaching” program of learning. Boolean prides itself on its one-to-one support, and the fact that it directs students in how to solve problems on their own.   HOW MANY STUDENTS HAVE BEEN THROUGH YOUR COURSE, AND GONE ON TO SECURE JOBS? 1,300 students have been trained by Boolean. Last year alone Boolean had a 95% placement rate for students.   BEST MOMENTS (1:50) – Patrick - “The aim is to turn coding newbies into software developers” (9:17) – Patrick - “A question you should ask yourself is ‘As a developer at this company, what would my role be in helping a company to achieve its goals?'” (14:55) – Patrick – “Tech is genuinely a way in which we could level up” (18:38) – Patrick – “The tech community is so powerful, so strong. Not just for finding a job, but also for personal growth”   ABOUT THE HOST – PHIL BURGESS Phil Burgess is an independent IT consultant who has spent the last 20 years helping organizations to design, develop, and implement software solutions.  Phil has always had an interest in helping others to develop and advance their careers.  And in 2017 Phil started the I.T.

UK R&B Singer Junior Giscombe Interview

Norman Washington "Junior" Giscombe (born 6 June 1957) is an English singer-songwriter (frequently known simply by the mononym, Junior) who was one of the first British R&B artists to be successful in the United States. He is best known for his 1982 hit single, "Mama Used to Say". CAREERGiscombe was born in Wandsworth, London, and was a backing vocalist with Linx between 1980 and 1982. When turning towards a solo career, he was first billed simply as Junior and he scored a #7 hit in the UK Singles Chart in 1982, with "Mama Used to Say". His follow-up single, "Too Late" also made the Top 20 in the UK. "Mama Used to Say" was also a Top 40 Pop hit and Top 5 R&B in the United States, earning him a "Best Newcomer" award from Billboard magazine. Sometime (most likely) around 1984 and 1985, Junior Giscombe recorded (and very possibly co-wrote) an unknown number of songs with Phil Lynott, the former leader, vocalist and bass player of hard rock band Thin Lizzy. Lynott died in January 1986 and the songs were never officially released. Most remain as demos, but one of the songs, "Lady Loves to Dance", was mastered and nearly released before being pulled by the record company. Some of the songs are available on YouTube, including "What's the Matter Baby" (Giscombe provides backing vocals) and "Time (and Again)" (Giscombe shares vocals with Lynott). After a period outside the charts, he made a brief return to the Top 10 in 1987 when he sang a duet with Kim Wilde on "Another Step (Closer to You)". He also became involved with the formation of Red Wedge in 1986 with Billy Bragg, Jimmy Somerville and Paul Weller, and had been a part of The Council Collective with The Style Council, Jimmy Ruffin and others for the 1984 fundraising single, "Soul Deep" and in 1992 appeared on stage at the 1992 Labour rally in SheffieldSheffield_Rally singing Curtis Mayfield's[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Curtis_Mayfield ([1])] 'Move on Up'. Later Giscombe became better known as a songwriter for various artists, including Sheena Easton. He is currently a DJ with internet radio station Solarradio.com, although he is not listed on their website. Giscombe is the uncle of British comedian Richard Blackwood, who sampled "Mama Used to Say" on his single "Mama – Who Da Man" in June 2000. www.juniorgiscombe.co.uk www.joekelleyradio.com Originally aired February 23rd, 2006

Shock World Service 096: I Didn't Want The Night To End (Cian Ó Cíobháin) 19/10/2020 Galway, Ireland 1. Phil Lynott - One Wish (Demo with Huey Lewis) Phil Lynott's friendship with Huey Lewis dated back to the mid-70s and this extraordinary demo, one of the last songs Lynott wrote, was never officially released. 2. John Cale - Dying On The Vine The eternally creative John Cale recorded this around the same time that Lynott collaborated with Lewis on the previous track. 3. OMD - Souvenir Possibly the most beautiful song in the entire OMD catalogue features the band's keyboard player Paul Humphreys on vocals. 4. Karen Marks - Cold Café Wistful new wave track from Melbourne from '81. 5. Clannad - Theme From Harry's Game Regularly played on the radio in the 80s, I had almost forgotten about it until I happened upon a Twitter thread admiring it no end. 6. Lani Hall - Never Say Never Again From an unofficial Bond movie from '83, I've always had a soft spot for the title track, sung by Lani Hall, who was married to Herb Alpert and briefly fronted Sérgio Mendes & Brasil '66. 7. Sparks - I Want To Hold Your Hand Stunning cover from 1976 of The Beatles standard which was introduced to me by Barry Murphy of The Last Sound. 8. Chris Clark - How About You Chris Clark is one of a very small number of white performers who recorded on Motown during the 60s. 9. Love - My Little Red Book I first heard this when composer Burt Bacharach performed it at Galway Arts Festival in 2019. Next morning, I was on the hunt and discovered a number of covers, including this one from 1965 from the mighty Love. 10. BEAK> - Yatton From one of Geoff Barrow's post-Portishead Bristol bands. 11. De Ambassade - Geen Genade Like the previous track, this Dutch song has the spirit of 1980s new wave all over it, though it came out in 2016. 12. Turquoise Days - Grey Skies Astonishing synth-pop classic from ‘84 from a duo based in Jersey on the Channel Islands, who released a number of cassettes in the 80s. 13. Ariel Pink - Stray Here With You Only a genius like Ariel Pink would have an unreleased pop gem like this in his locker. It surfaced last year on his ‘Oddities Sodomies Vol 2' compilation of previously unreleased tracks. 14. Toasted Heretic - Another Day, Another Riot I've been after a good quality version of this track for ages - one of Toasted Heretic's greatest moments, which will forever remind me of moving to Galway. I was thrilled when Neil Farrell, who used to record with the band (and also records as The Melancholy Thug), gifted me with a high quality version a few months ago. Indeed, I borrowed from the lyrics to give this podcast its title. 15. Jan St. Werner - VS Cancelled Jan St. Werner of Mouse On Mars collaborated with The Fall's Mark E Smith as Von Südenfed. This track features Smith reading an email from Domino detailing why the band had been dropped by the label. 16. The Fall - Paint Work The Fall's 8th studio LP ‘This Nation's Saving Grace' is a masterpiece and this ramshackle track is one of its defining moments. 17. Billy Fury - I'm Lost Without You This track almost sounds like a blueprint for the music of early Tindersticks. Indeed, Morrissey was also a huge fan of this 60s Scouse singer. 18. The Kinks - I Go To Sleep (Demo) We kicked off with a demo and so we'll part with one. Written by Ray Davies, it was never formally recorded by The Kinks, but has been covered many times since. https://cianociobhain.com/ https://www.rte.ie/rnag/

Most of the focus in transportation planning has been on how we move around cars, but universal mobility as a service looks at how we can best move around people. The two also discuss the language we use to talk about aging and why planners need to think about how the built environment affects people of all abilities.
