In this podcast, Gemma Creagh talks to Marian Quinn, Writer/Director of Twig. Twig, a powerful retelling of the Greek tragedy Antigone, is set in Dublin's inner city where an ancient city wall cordons off a neighbourhood which is rife with drugs. When the local crime lord, Leon (O'Byrne) vows to let her brother Paulie's body rot in the street, Twig (Malone), young and iron-willed, defiantly sets out to do the right thing. The tragedy which unfolds inexorably, pits the two figures against each other, building relentlessly as grief, love, hope and despair collide in a dramatic conclusion against the backdrop of Dublin's docklands. Written and directed by Marian Quinn, Twig stars Sade Malone (Tin Star, Pistol) opposite BAFTA-winning, Tony Award-winning and Emmy nominated Brían F. O'Byrne (Little Boy Blue, Million Dollar Baby). Quinn previously wrote and directed the coming-of-age feature 32A which won the Best First Feature Award at the Galway Film Fleadh. In this Film Ireland podcast, Gemma Creagh talks to Director/Writer Patricia Kelly about her film Verdigris which is premiering at the 35th Galway Film Fleadh. Trapped in a marriage with a volatile and controlling husband, middle-aged, middle-class Marian takes on a secret part-time job as a census enumerator. The job is no picnic. On her tough inner-city route, she faces dismissive and abusive locals who flatly refuse to engage in the census. This includes brash and no-nonsense teenager Jewel, who Marian soon realises is living alone with no obvious means of supporting herself. Marian finds herself striking a deal with Jewel – she won't report her to the authorities if Jewel helps her get the locals to fill out their census forms. As they walk the streets of Dublin, an unlikely friendship blooms. Verdigris screens at the Galway Film Fleadh 2023 on 14th July. https://filmireland.net/

In this Film Ireland podcast, Gemma Creagh talks to Gavin Fitzgerald, Director of Million Dollar Pigeons. The Irish documentary is about the passionate and ferociously competitive international pigeon masters, known as fanciers, that will do whatever it takes to win. Big bucks, sweat, tears and sleepless nights are invested into these feathered athletes, yet on race day all they can do is wait, hope and pray. Fitzgerald's guide into this competitive racing world is Ireland-based pigeon fancier John O'Brien. A father of two, he has 60 pigeons, including race winner “Big Balls”, that he routinely trains. Citing a vision that appeared to him while hallucinating at confirmation that he was meant to be in the sport, O'Brien has a big dream he wants to achieve. Flying under the radar are a group of pigeon masters from the US, Thailand, China and South Africa, competing in one of the most lucrative bird races on the planet. Each event is stranger and more exciting than the last. When scandal taints the crown-jewel event, the community is rocked and the future of the sport is up in the air. The film had its world premiere at the prestigious Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival and had its Irish premiere at the Galway Film Fleadh earlier this year. Million Dollar Pigeons is in cinemas from 25th November 2022.
