The Water We Swim In: When Technology Becomes Environment

Rumors of Grace with Bob Hutchins

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 9, 2026 13:39

Episode Summary: In this episode, we move beyond the common debate of whether technology is "good" or "bad" to explore a more fundamental reality: technology is no longer just a tool we pick up; it is the environment we inhabit. Drawing on the prophetic work of French sociologist Jacques Ellul, Bob explores how we have migrated from a natural wilderness defined by seasons and storms to a "silicon wilderness" defined by algorithms and efficiency. We look at the anxiety of the disconnected screen, the illusion of being a "user," and why the human soul-which thrives on inefficiency and imperfection-truggles to breathe in a system designed for zero error. If we build the house, and the house eventually builds us, what kind of humans are we becoming inside this machine? And where do we find the "glitch" that proves we are still alive? Notable Quotes: "You can put down a hammer. You cannot put down the weather." "We do not navigate by the stars anymore. We navigate by the blue light of the screen." "The machine forces us to develop a mechanism of perfection. The soul thrives on the glitch." Mentioned in this Episode: Jacques Ellul (1912–1994): French philosopher, sociologist, and lay theologian. The Human Voice on Substack

Our guest today is William Daniels, an award-winning textile and quilt artist whose work bridges fine art and social commentary. Born in New Orleans and now based in New York, William blends a deep academic background with a hands-on creative spirit. With degrees from the State University of New York and New York University—and nearing completion of his PhD in Art Theory, Philosophy, and Aesthetics—his art reflects both intellect and intuition. Known for his rich use of texture, symbolism, and storytelling, William's quilts are as thought-provoking as they are visually stunning. Yet, for all his accolades and exhibits, his favorite part of the artistic journey is the camaraderie—the people(6:58) Will talks about the “voice of the quilt”. What does this mean?(9:08) What are some of his most memorable creations?(11:33) Meg reads a quote from William about how he creates. He explains what it means to hold a mirror to society.(13:50) Will's work has been described as Bohemian, eclectic and experiential. He addresses this description and even takes a little umbridge with one of these descriptors. (15:05) Will takes us through his creative process(16:39) How long do his projects take to create? Well…it depends!(18:00) Will talks about his interest in astronomy and how it affects his work.(19:57) In addition to his many hobbies – Will is PhD ABD. He talks about his thesis.(21:25) Camaraderie is deeply important to Will. He talks about those he's met on his journey and how they've helped and influenced him. He tells of these people and particularly an experience at a New York Quilt Guild while in college.(27:03) What is Will working on now?(28:50) How does Will make some two-dimensional more human?(29:52) What does he do in his spare time?(30:58) What's next and what's his dream?(32:28) Is there a question we didn't ask? Well…what's been the most difficult aspect of quilting. Will talks about gender issues in quilting as a male who quilts…for example feminine quilting vernacular. To reach out to William, you can find him at williamdanielsartist.com, or on Instagram @williamdanielsartist. First say to yourself what you would be; and then do what you have to do.—Epictetus, "Discourses"Language is a powerful thing... a word tossed in the air can either build a fortress of confidence or sting like a summer hornet." Grandpa Bill's poem: Call me silly, call me smart... But if you toss a name that stings, it flaps its wings... and ouch, it zings!Today, we're talking about kindness, niceness, and the holistic medicine of good words. It's not just about manners; it's about optimizing our health and the relationship we have with our companions. The Vagus Nerve Connection: Explain that when we receive a kind word, our bodies release feel-good chemicals like oxytocin (the "cuddle hormone") and dopamine. This calms the vagus nerve, lowering heart rate and blood pressure—a true holistic healing response. The Ripple Effect: When we speak kindly to others, we experience the same benefit. Kindness is a two-way street for wellness.Kindness to Our Pets: Our dogs may not understand every word, but they absolutely grasp our tone and intention. A gentle voice for "Good boy!" or "Stay close" fosters a sense of security and strengthens their attachment to us. Contrast this with a sharp, angry tone which can elevate their stress hormones (cortisol). The Inner Critic: The harshest words are often the ones we say to ourselves ("I'm an idiot," "I'm always messing up"). This self-talk is toxic to our holistic health.BH Sales Kennel Kelp Tip: Challenge listeners to use the same gentle tone they use with their pet when they talk to themselves. Instead of "I failed," try: "That was a learning opportunity. I'll be kinder to myself next time."Affirmations as a Supplement: Encourage the daily use of simple, kind affirmations to reprogram the mind. (e.g., "I am capable," "I am enough," "I am centered.")Recap: Kind words are not just an accessory; they are a fundamental part of our holistic well-being and the cornerstone of a trusting relationship with our loved ones and our pets.Closing Challenge: For the next 24 hours, commit to replacing one harsh word (spoken or thought) with one gentle, kind one. Listen to the difference it makes in your body and your relationships."Thank you for joining me on the BH Sales Kennel Kelp Holistic Healing Hour! From his roots in Washington, D.C., shaped by a mother who was a computer programmer and activist, through Harvard philosophy and a decade of stand-up, Baratunde has built a career at the intersection of culture, technology, and storytelling. Their conversation ranges from the everyday signals of progress—like coffee shop Wi-Fi and subway calls—to deeper questions about authorship, language, and governance in the age of AI. They explore what it means to share creative space with an AI collaborator, why indigenous languages reveal new possibilities for machine learning, and how democracy might draw wisdom from traditions that put nature and future generations at the center. Baratunde also shares the simple practices that keep him grounded: meditation, meals with people, moving his body, and spending time in the natural world. Together they sketch a vision where technology doesn't replace our humanity but presses us to return to it with more intention. Themes Infrastructure is culture. Machines can help us think, but they can't carry grief. Language encodes imagination and culture. Governance should begin with shared values, not with chasing releases. In this unique episode, Chris gives us an exclusive preview of his upcoming book "First to Converse: Dominate Markets with the Human Voice," set to release in fall 2025. This isn't just another sales book – it's a comprehensive cookbook for market dominance, designed for everyone from CEOs and founders to individual sales contributors who understand that whoever is first to converse is first to win. Chris takes us through the book's introduction, sharing the uncomfortable truth that while everyone thinks buyers want to control the sales process, the reality is that the first company to engage a prospect in meaningful conversation shapes their entire buying journey. Drawing from over 14 years of experience leading ConnectAndSell, Chris reveals why cold calling remains the strongest foundation for B2B success – and why waiting for inbound leads is a losing strategy. This episode serves as both a dry run for the audiobook version and a masterclass in why targeted conversations at pace and scale dominate markets. So buckle up as Chris challenges everything you think you know about modern B2B sales.

The vibration of our own voice can ground us, heal emotional wounds, and serve as a tool for blessing and transformation when used with intentionality and love. This deeper understanding of the voice's role in healing can reframe how we view self-expression and creativity.Rediscovering Ancestral Wisdom and Connection to Nature: The conversation highlights how many of us have become disconnected from ancestral practices and the natural world. Reya explains how nature holds wisdom in its patterns and sounds, serving as a "library" of memory and guidance. Through offerings, prayers, and song, individuals can rekindle a relationship with the earth that restores a sense of belonging and purpose.Singing as a Transmission of Love and Sacred Intentions: In contrast to the commodification of music in modern society, Reya describes how the act of singing has traditionally been used by shamans and healers to convey love, protection, and blessings. By building a practice of singing from the heart, individuals can access their authentic voice and align with their higher purpose, amplifying their energy field and positively impacting others.Navigating the Modern Landscape of Technology and AI with Discernment: Stewart and Reya discuss the rise of artificial intelligence and its impact on creativity and self-awareness. They reflect on how AI can replicate but cannot embody the soulful essence of human expression. This prompts a reminder to foster resilience against digital distractions by grounding ourselves in embodied experiences and genuine human connection. The Interplay Between Spirituality, Desire, and Social Conditioning: The discussion delves into the Gnostic myths and the idea that true desires originate from the "high heart" and guide us toward our soul's blueprint. However, lower desires—amplified by social media and consumerism—can entrap us in illusions. Recognizing this distinction can help individuals reclaim their agency and align with their authentic spiritual path. The Divine Feminine and Sacred Balance in Creation: Reya brings attention to the erasure of the divine feminine in many spiritual narratives and emphasizes the importance of restoring balance by honoring both masculine and feminine energies. She shares stories of ancient priestesses and the sacred role of women as conduits of creation and wisdom, suggesting that reclaiming this knowledge is essential for collective healing and spiritual evolution.A Call to Collective Kindness and Creative Agency: The conversation ends with a reflection on the power of individual actions in creating ripples of collective change. Whether through a simple song, a kind gesture, or a moment of deep listening, every act of love and care contributes to a more harmonious world. Reya underscores the importance of remembering that we are creators of our reality, capable of shaping a future imbued with compassion, connection, and truth.

This much I know: I write to be heard. I believe in the music of the spoken word and the power of the human voice to connect.  For those of you around the world in our global community you know I've been living my life out loud. I've been working out the deeper parts of my life story in public to become the best voice of myself I can be. I believe I'm called to use my voice to inform, heal, delight, illuminate, provoke, and push back on injustice, and ignorance. Why? Because if I live on a superficial level I live shallow and out of reach of the gold coins in the deep well of my life.  My podcast episodes call me to write myself into being a better person; but I don't do it alone. I rely on you. I rely on faith, family, friends, and books. To me books are the bread of life. They help fill in the gaps of what I don't know or have yet to imagine.  Someone said that writers are beggars who tell other beggars where we found bread. My episodes are a means of breaking bread with you, sharing it in the hope that you will wave to me and say, “What! You, too! I thought I was the only one.” [C.S.Lewis]Question: What have you learned in another year's worth of the work you offer to the world? You're always invited: “Come for the stories - stay for the magic!” Speaking of magic, would you subscribe and spread the word with a generous 5-star review and comment - it helps us all - and join us next time!Meanwhile, stop by my Quarter Moon Story Arts website to:✓ Check out Services I Offer,✓ For a no-obligation conversation about your communication challenges, get in touch with me today✓ Stay current with Diane as “Wyzga on Words” on Substack, LinkedIn and now Pandora RadioStories From Women Who Walk Production TeamPodcaster: Diane F Wyzga & Quarter Moon Story ArtsMusic: Mer's Waltz from Crossing the Waters by Steve Schuch & Night Heron MusicAll content and image © 2019 to Present Quarter Moon Story Arts. Peter, Jude, and John all identify Balaam as a false prophet whose teachings are relevant and dangerous, especially in the end times. The main idea behind this false teaching is the belief that one can engage with the worldly system and still maintain a pleasing relationship with God. Balaam thought he could maneuver around God’s direct commands to get the financial gain he wanted without penalty. This deceitful teaching is infiltrating the church, as indicated in Revelation 2:14, where it is described as happening in the Church of Pergamum. God hates the false teachings that would destroy relationships with His children, and that is exactly what the doctrine of Balaam results in. Join us for worship and study to understand how to avoid this false teaching and learn to willingly obey God’s Word in order to live a holy life.

Hello to you listening in Englewood, Florida!Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories From Women Who Walk with 60 Seconds for Thoughts on Thursday and your host, Diane Wyzga.  To this very day my clients from courtrooms to classrooms  can repeat my opening lines about presentations:“Put down the paper and nobody gets hurt.”and “To stand and deliver your work is a privilege - a gift from you to your audience.”The human voice is the most powerful instrument we have to heal, inspire, comfort, entertain, and more. It's the reason that Big Humans and Little Humans long to hear the same stories retold. I believe that our audiences are waiting to be gifted with our spoken words, not our notepad words.  When you write your words you are using your brain in a particular way to convey your message in words. But that all changes when you speak those same words out loud. Why? Because writer-brain and speaker-brain are different.Speaking your words out loud will show you right away when a turn of phrase fails, you lack a bridge from one thought to the next, when your story begins to unravel like an old sweater because it lacks integrity - it does not hang together from beginning to end.I have produced well over 1,000 episodes.  My 4-year practice  has enabled me to embed a lot of meaning in a short space while offering commentaries that are timeless and universal.I take a day to write my week's worth of 5 episodes. And then I speak them aloud before recording them. This is when I hear myself say something my writer-brain didn't catch.Practical Tip: Take the time to speak the words of your presentation out loud. Relish the sound of your human voice. Embrace the power of your spoken word. The more you speak your words out loud the more confident you become, more fearless, more influential. It's a gift from you to your audience. Hello to you listening in Gothenburg, Sweden!Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories From Women Who Walk with 60 Seconds for Thoughts on Thursday and your host, Diane Wyzga. What have I learned in another year's worth of podcasting?  This much I know: I write for radio. I believe in the music of the spoken word and the power of the human voice to connect.  Over the years I've been working out the deeper parts of my life story in public to become the best voice of myself I can be. I use my voice to inform, sooth, delight, heal, illuminate, provoke, push back on injustice, and more. Why? Because if I live on a superficial level I live shallow and out of reach of the gold coins in the deep well of my life.  My podcast episodes call me to write myself into being a better person. But I don't do it alone. I rely on the plethora of books I read to fill in the gaps of what I don't know.  Books are the bread of life.Someone said that writers are beggars who tell other beggars where we found bread. When I find or create something that's meaningful to me I share it with you in the hope that someone will echo back, “What! You, too! I thought I was the only one.” [C.S.Lewis]Question: What have you learned in another year's worth of the work you offer to the world?Meanwhile, stop by my Quarter Moon Story Arts website to:✓ Check out What I Offer,✓ Arrange your free Story Start-up Session,✓ Opt In to my monthly NewsAudioLetter for bonus gift, valuable tips & techniques to enhance your story work, and✓ Stay current with Diane on LinkedIn.Stories From Women Who Walk Production TeamPodcaster: Diane F Wyzga & Quarter Moon Story ArtsMusic: Mer's Waltz from Crossing the Waters by Steve Schuch & Night Heron MusicAll content and image © 2019 to Present Quarter Moon Story Arts. This movie is not for all tastes, but it IS for Drusilla and Josh. It's Singapore Sling: The Man Who Loved a Corpse by Nikolai Nikolaides. From wiki: “Singapore Sling: The Man Who Loved a Corpse (Greek: Singapore Sling: Ο Άνθρωπος που Αγάπησε ένα Πτώμα, tr. Singapore Sling: O Ánthropos pou Agápise éna Ptóma) is a 1990 Greek black and white horror underground art film directed by Nikos Nikolaidis and regarded as his magnum opus. Considered a difficult film to label while still managing to develop something of a cult following throughout the years nonetheless, it was shot in a bizarre manner somewhat resembling film noir or neo-noir and black comedy as well as the exploitation, thriller, and crime genres mixed with some elements of eroticism and horror with sex being used as a power game and received a theatrical release in Greece on 6 December 1990.[1][2] “Drusilla saw Almodóvar's double feature of shorts, Strange Way of Life and The Human Voice. Or, listen to Martin Luther King speaking his words, transmitting the emotion of his idea, creating empathy and energy. When we met on Zoom she held each piece of paper up to the camera walking me through her work - step by step - page by page - in her own voice - speaking what she had created. There was joy, pride, courage, freedom of expression, and commitment to being who she said she is - her Who!Speaking aloud does that; it shifts an idea on paper to becoming a reality when spoken aloud.
