I attended the Wednesday, March 26, 2025 Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass concert at the Goodyear Theater in Akron, Ohio. Yes, Herb is still touring at 89 years old. Yes, I was excited to see him again. Obviously, I can't can't record the show. That's why I'm going to do something the FM radio stations did when I was younger. After a show, they would play the entire set list in order. Sit tight. This will be a long episode. Blame it on the Bossa Nova's magic spell that the Samba craze swept the nation in the mid-‘60s. And, two of the main proponents of this joyful, sun-splashed celebration were Sergio Mendes and Herb Alpert. Herbie had the record label, A&M, and Sergio had the secret sauce, not to mention the lovely lead singer Lani Hall, who later became Mrs. Alpert. Mas Que Nada, translated from the Portuguese, means “Whatever,” and the lyrics are insisting that whatever else may be happening, the singer passionately craves the Samba. The rolling syncopation of Mendes's piano, along with the percussion and the siren call of Lani and her partner Janis make the seduction irresistible: this is just, good sexy fun, and you don't have to understand the lyrics to get the message. The song, originally written, recorded, and made a hit in Brasil by Jorge Ben, was spread around the world by Sergio and Herbie, making it to #47 on the Billboard Top 100. I hope that the tune's creator took some pride and pleasure it that - (along with the royalties)… so, “whatever!”

What do you get when you cross bossa nova with jazz and funk? You get Sergio Mendes and Brasil 66. Sergio performed with many artists through the years. He rerecorded Mas Que Nada in 2006 with the Black Eyed Peas. Herb Alpert and Jerry Moss recorded Mendes and Brasil 66 on Herb Alpert's A&M record label. One of the Brasil 66 singers was Lani Hall, later Herb Alpert's wife. Sergio was unhappy when Herb stole Lani away from the group. Mendes performed his biggest hit “The Look of Love” for Presidents Richard Nixon and Lyndon B. Johnson. In the 1970s his career stalled. I asked him about that. He had the hit Olympia which was used as the theme song for the Olympic games in 1984.
El pianista Kenny Barron toca 'Isfahan', obra de Duke Ellington y Billy Strayhorn, en su nuevo disco 'The source'. Hace exactamente 30 años que la cantante Susannah McCorkle grabó en Nueva York su disco 'From Bessie to Brazil' con canciones como 'Love', 'The lady is a tramp', 'That ole devil called love' o 'Waters of March'. El primer disco de la cantante y compositora Gabi Hartmann, sin título específico, contiene temas como 'Buzzing bee', 'People tell me/Les gens me disent', 'Une errante sur terre' y 'Mille rivages'. La que fuera cantante del Brasil 66 de Sergio Mendes, Lani Hall, firma con ayuda de Herb Alpert el disco 'Seasons of love' que incluye 'The first time ever I saw your face', 'Happy woman', 'Waters of March' y 'Now you know'. Despide el pianista Baptiste Trotignon con una grabación instrumental de 'So in love' de Cole Porter. Escuchar audio
It's 2023 which means another awesome year of your 35th favourite James Bond podcast as we come together (sort of) to rank all the other songs of the Bond franchise that we love, hate and everything else in between! Why isn't Colin on here yet he can still rank? Why is Lani Hall reaching around so much? Do we like Colin's random rankings that we haven't talked about before? What epic Bond fact do we find out that will blow your mind? How much Madonna can be talked about? Why do we want Timothy Dalton singing these songs? Which versions of these songs would need to be changed in 2023? Why are we sad that Belinda Carlisle isn't on this list? Which songs can Ben not listen to when doing certain activities? And why is Noah singing karaoke again? It's another interesting and fun one you won't want to miss! ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★
The Georgia Department of Transportation 2022 triennial safety audit of MARTA “finds a strong commitment to safety and no major safety gaps or concerns,” according to a news release. The audit examined MARTA's heavy and light rail departments including operations and maintenance, training and communications, and equipment, structures, and signals. As required by the Federal Transit Administration, MARTA maintains and regularly updates an agency safety plan and that plan, along with authority safety procedures and practices are audited every three years through GDOT's State Safety Oversight program. This year's findings show a significant improvement in safety practices in all areas, with only 20 deficiencies and 16 areas of concern identified, compared to close to 100 such findings during the previous audit in 2019. A deficiency is defined as an item that doesn't meet the established safety criteria; an area of concern partially meets those criteria. MARTA will review the audit findings this month and generate a corrective action plan for each item needing attention. Despite a strong showing in favor of the change, Juneteenth and Veterans Day will not be added to the Sandy Springs Holiday Calendar in 2023. Adoption of the 2023 city calendar was originally proposed on November 15, but the matter was deferred after significant public comment in favor of the addition of Juneteenth and Veterans Day. Mayor and council revisited the discussion at the December 6 meeting. Human Resources Director Jennifer Emery presented two options for the 2023 Holiday Calendar. The first being to add one floating holiday in recognition of Juneteenth and Veterans Day. The floating holiday must be taken within the calendar year. The second option was to make no changes and keep the calendar as it. Mayor Rusty Paul and city council members chose to keep the originally proposed 10 holidays and the floating holiday option. Many residents, once again, spoke in favor of the Juneteenth addition. Councilperson Melody Kelley spoke to the importance of adding Juneteenth, presenting both a factual and personal perspective. According to Kelley, 73% of Georgia cities have adopted Juneteenth and 87% have adopted Veterans Day as a city holiday. The cities include Atlanta, Augusta, Columbus, Macon-Bibb, Savannah, Athens, South Fulton, Sandy Springs, Roswell, Johns Creek, Warner Robins, Albany, Alpharetta, Marietta and Stonecrest. Kelley also shared memories of her grandfather, who helped raise her, correlating personal memories with the importance of Juneteenth. Michael Pauken has been named Interim Executive Director of the Sandy Springs Performing Arts Center at City Springs and will join the team this month. Pauken has served as General Manager/Executive Director of the North Shore Center for the Performing Arts in Skokie, Illinois, since 2002. The North Shore Center is a 65,000 square foot, two theater complex containing a total of 1,185 seats. The Center has two resident theater companies and partners with several other organizations. More than 400 events and performances are held at the Center in a typical year. During his time at the Center, Pauken brought programming in-house and presented more than 475 international touring and Chicago-based artists including Al Jarreau, Art Garfunkel, Boz Scaggs, Clint Black, Ed Asner, Graham Nash, Herb Alpert and Lani Hall, and the Indigo Girls, to name only a few. More than 200 students at Sandy Springs Charter Middle School see the world through new lenses thanks to Sandy Springs Rotary Club and Vision to Learn. The Sandy Springs Rotary Club partnered with Los Angeles-based nonprofit Vision to Learn to provide prescription lenses to nearly 1/3 of students at the middle school during the first phase of distribution. In total, Sandy Springs Rotary Club has purchased more than 800 pairs of glasses for Sandy Springs students. Club members and volunteers spent the mornings of December 7 and 8 handing out glasses to students at Sandy Springs Charter Middle School. Students were briefed on how to take care of their glasses and when to wear them. Vision to Learn was founded in 2012 by Austin Beutner in Northridge, California. He saw the need once he found out that so many students in the Los Angeles area were struggling in school, partly due to not being able to see the board or read clearly. The idea was to bring a vision clinic to the kids (at schools or Boys and Girls Clubs) to access whether they needed glasses and then to provide the proper glasses for them to be able to see and do better in school. As of 2022, Vision to Learn has visited 5000 schools and Boys and Girls Clubs and has provided 350,000 children with glasses. They currently have 50 mobile clinics and over 200 employees working for them. A large contingent of football players from Marist, North Atlanta, Riverwood and St. Pius X have been honored for their accomplishments on the gridiron in the 2022 season with their selection to the All-Region 4AAAAAA team. North Atlanta won two of the three top awards, with senior quarterback Trey Lennon selected as offensive player of the year and Jamie Aull as coach of the year. St. Pius X senior defensive back Jack Tchienchou was named defensive player of the year. Marist had four players named on offense — junior running back Joseph Pizzo and senior offensive linemen Peyton Lamb, Kevin McDonald and Drew Prieto. Riverwood had three players on offense — senior tight end Levi Linowes, senior running back Walter Evans and sophomore offensive lineman Sean Poret. North Atlanta featured two offensive players — senior wide receiver Jamie O'Kelley and senior offensive lineman Tyree Myles — while St. Pius offensive lineman Jack Woods was the only other local player named to the team on offense. Marist had three of its players selected on defense — junior defensive lineman Luke Harpring, junior defensive back Casey Comerford and senior linebacker Colin Hare, while North Atlanta also featured three defensive players — sophomore defensive lineman Chase Linton, junior defensive back Xaden Benson and junior linebacker Connor Hughes. For a full list of players, please go to the Northside Neighbor website.

Singer/songwriter talks about her influences and ultimately finding her own voice on the bandstand.
Salud y larga vida, maestro.
Hey babes! Today my guest is Singer/Songwriter Sergio Mendes.Mendes is a singular artist who remains as vital and relevant today as when he exploded on the scene in the 1960s with his group, Brasil '66, played a huge role in popularizing Brazilian music around the world, and at the same time created his own genre by fusing Brazilian music with American pop. He continued to produce hits, decade after decade, staying current and relevant while staying true to his unique sound. One of the most internationally successful Brazilian artists of all time, Mendes is a three-time Grammy® Award winner with some 35 albums, including many gold or platinum, including the critically acclaimed Timeless, produced by will.i.am. Hit singles include Mas Que Nada, The Look of Love, Scarborough Fair, Night and Day, Never Gonna Let You Go and his unforgettable rendition of Fool on the Hill. In 2012, Sergio's Real in Rio from the animated film “Rio” was nominated for an Academy Award® as Best Original Song.We talk to him about his new PBS special called "Sergio Mendes and Friends | A Celebration".SERGIO MENDES & FRIENDS: A CELEBRATION features the singer telling much of his story in his own words. He is joined onscreen by such friends and collaborators as Herb Alpert, Common, Lani Hall (lead singer of Brasil '66), Quincy Jones, John Legend, Gracinha Mendes (Sergio's lead singer since 1971 and his wife of 46 years), Jerry Moss, Carlos Saldhana (Oscar®-nominated filmmaker of Rio) and singer/songwriter/producer will.i.am. These friends offer unique perspectives on the man and his music, with plenty of the latter, including recordings and performances from nearly every phase of Sergio's career. In addition to our guest I talk about how the PC movement (political correctness), the WOKE in our country and politics are destroying businesses and careers including some of the best Hollywood has to offer. My question is should we discuss this and voice our opinion on these topics when it could cause you to be boycotted or even cost you your position or career in the process. YOU must decide if it's worth it. When it comes to politics will your view change people's minds when you voice it?#itsemmasworld #sergiomendes #pbs #nevergonnaletyougo. #rioInstagram @itsemmasworldradioTwitter @itsemmasworldr1Website: https://itsemmasworld.com

Sometimes you've just got to let the music move through you and dance...We can't help but move our feet on this episode as it is truly a celebration of music and film in general.'Sergio Mendes & Friends: A Celebration' features the singer telling much of his story in his own words. Check your local PBS listings to see this film, but before that please enjoy this extensive sit down we had with director John Scheinfeld as we talk about the idea behind the movie, the adjustments they've had to make to it in the COVID landscape, but most importantly being able to make something that is a pure celebration of music, of life and of living it to it's most which is something that we all need right now...

Since arriving in California in 1988 from his native land of Sri Lanka, Hussain has become a first call bass player in Los Angeles. His feel, versatility and joyful attitude has kept his phone ringing for over thirty years. His presence is a joy to behold on the bandstand and in the studio, raising the level of musicality and inspiring both the audience and the musicians that he plays with.Born and raised in Colombo, Sri Lanka, Hussain grew up surrounded by the richly varied traditional music of his country, but was also drawn to Pop, Jazz and R&B that he heard on the radio. He started singing in school choirs at 10, took up piano and accordion at age 12, and at 17 started playing electric bass. After living in Europe for 6 years he moved to Los Angeles to study music at the Musicians Institute, where he graduated with the school’s highest honors. Armed with his bass, his passion and dedication Hussain’s stellar reputation has lead him to travel the world many times over, playing music with some of the most beloved artists of our generation. His credits include Sergio Mendes, Tom Scott, Michael Bolton, Deniece Williams, Helen Reddy, Jim Messina, Joe Williams, John Raitt, Petula Clark, Freda Payne, Kenny Kirkland, Little Anthony and the Imperials, Lamont Dozier, Pauline Wilson, David Foster, Michael McDonald, Bobby Brown, Russell Ferrante, Dionne Warwick, Captain & Tennille, The Perri sisters, Chaka Khan, Crystal Gayle, Jonathan Butler, The Four Tops, The Hollywood Bowl Orchestra, Gloria Gaynor, Robben Ford, Phoebe Snow, Marty Stuart, Sam Moore, Steve Winwood, Whitney Houston, Tito Puente, Al McKay, Yanni, Dave Weckl Band, Carol King, Melissa Manchester, Christopher Cross, Stewart Copeland, Terry Wollman and Kenny G. Shock World Service 096: I Didn't Want The Night To End (Cian Ó Cíobháin) 19/10/2020 Galway, Ireland 1. Phil Lynott - One Wish (Demo with Huey Lewis) Phil Lynott's friendship with Huey Lewis dated back to the mid-70s and this extraordinary demo, one of the last songs Lynott wrote, was never officially released. 2. John Cale - Dying On The Vine The eternally creative John Cale recorded this around the same time that Lynott collaborated with Lewis on the previous track. 3. OMD - Souvenir Possibly the most beautiful song in the entire OMD catalogue features the band's keyboard player Paul Humphreys on vocals. 4. Karen Marks - Cold Café Wistful new wave track from Melbourne from '81. 5. Clannad - Theme From Harry's Game Regularly played on the radio in the 80s, I had almost forgotten about it until I happened upon a Twitter thread admiring it no end. 6. Lani Hall - Never Say Never Again From an unofficial Bond movie from '83, I've always had a soft spot for the title track, sung by Lani Hall, who was married to Herb Alpert and briefly fronted Sérgio Mendes & Brasil '66. 7. Sparks - I Want To Hold Your Hand Stunning cover from 1976 of The Beatles standard which was introduced to me by Barry Murphy of The Last Sound. 8. Chris Clark - How About You Chris Clark is one of a very small number of white performers who recorded on Motown during the 60s. 9. Love - My Little Red Book I first heard this when composer Burt Bacharach performed it at Galway Arts Festival in 2019. Next morning, I was on the hunt and discovered a number of covers, including this one from 1965 from the mighty Love. 10. BEAK> - Yatton From one of Geoff Barrow's post-Portishead Bristol bands. 11. De Ambassade - Geen Genade Like the previous track, this Dutch song has the spirit of 1980s new wave all over it, though it came out in 2016. 12. Turquoise Days - Grey Skies Astonishing synth-pop classic from ‘84 from a duo based in Jersey on the Channel Islands, who released a number of cassettes in the 80s. 13. Ariel Pink - Stray Here With You Only a genius like Ariel Pink would have an unreleased pop gem like this in his locker. It surfaced last year on his ‘Oddities Sodomies Vol 2' compilation of previously unreleased tracks. 14. Toasted Heretic - Another Day, Another Riot I've been after a good quality version of this track for ages - one of Toasted Heretic's greatest moments, which will forever remind me of moving to Galway. I was thrilled when Neil Farrell, who used to record with the band (and also records as The Melancholy Thug), gifted me with a high quality version a few months ago. Indeed, I borrowed from the lyrics to give this podcast its title. 15. Jan St. Werner - VS Cancelled Jan St. Werner of Mouse On Mars collaborated with The Fall's Mark E Smith as Von Südenfed. This track features Smith reading an email from Domino detailing why the band had been dropped by the label. 16. The Fall - Paint Work The Fall's 8th studio LP ‘This Nation's Saving Grace' is a masterpiece and this ramshackle track is one of its defining moments. 17. Billy Fury - I'm Lost Without You This track almost sounds like a blueprint for the music of early Tindersticks. Indeed, Morrissey was also a huge fan of this 60s Scouse singer. 18. The Kinks - I Go To Sleep (Demo) We kicked off with a demo and so we'll part with one. Written by Ray Davies, it was never formally recorded by The Kinks, but has been covered many times since. https://cianociobhain.com/ https://www.rte.ie/rnag/
"The sustainability of art is constant movement between modes and scales, lyrics, melodies, symmetry, odd meters and a fundamental believe in the huminality of music. My guest today has been performing in Big Brass Bands the last 6 decades. He has been creating trends and staying on the productive side of the hill even as the fallibility and short comings of man are self-evident. He was co founder of the A&M record label and was instrumental in fashioning music that appealed to a society that was going through a cultural revolution. Their ears were open to many different styles of music including West Coast jazzers like Pete Jolly, Chet Baker, Leroy Vinnegar and Shelly Manne. He developed good working relationships with Quincy Jones Who was working on "You Got It Bad Girl" as The Girl from Impanima had come and gone and a newer slicker form of blues and jazz known as funk came into the American Lexicon. My guest employed street cats like Tommy LiPuma and Nick DeCaro. My guest plays a varied mix of Western swing, Afro/Cuban/Mariachi Country/Pop. Before labels he was a musician who straddled all genres evident from his collaboration with South African Freedom Fighter, Hugh Masekela. Since 1974 he has been collaborating with his wife Lani Hall forming a duo playing concert halls, hockey rinks, Film & TV shows, and in their own living room swinging their way through the day or into Tucson on the 26th for a gig @ The Fox Theatre. Herb Alpert, at the age of 82, is showing no signs of slowing down. Today’s episode in our series Researching College Options looks at a big option--an option that we have talked about in quite a few USACollegeChat episodes and in our first book, How To Find the Right College: A Workbook for Parents of High School Students. Most recently, we took a careful look at this option about five months ago in Episode 113. However, I have to admit that I am considering it again, based on a new opinion piece by LaGuardia Community College President Gail O. Mellow in late August in The New York Times. The option is community college. As we said in Episode 113, the community college is a marvelous institution in theory, but a somewhat more disappointing institution in reality--or, at least, that has usually been our position. If you are the parent of a high school senior, we know that some of you--perhaps many of you--are thinking about sending your kid to a community college next fall. Maybe that’s for financial reasons, maybe for academic reasons, maybe for maturity reasons, maybe for location reasons, maybe for some other reasons. Whatever your reasons, President Mellow has made us think again; so, let’s take another look. 1. The Pros of Community Colleges: A Review Let’s quickly review some of the pros and cons about community colleges, also referred to as two-year colleges. Here’s an abbreviated list of pros we offered back in Episode 113 (these reasons are conveniently taken from our first book,How To Find the Right College: A Workbook for Parents of High School Students): Two-year colleges offer associate’s degrees, which can be enough for some careers, including high-paying technical careers. Later, if the student wants to do so, the credits earned for an associate’s degree can be transferred to four-year colleges and applied toward credits needed for a four-year bachelor’s degree. (In fact, some two-year colleges in some states are now authorized to offer bachelor’s degrees over four years, especially in technical fields where workers in the labor force are in short supply.) Two-year colleges offer students who have struggled in high school a chance to improve their academic record and gain the fundamental skills and study habits they will need to succeed in more advanced college study. After doing well at a two-year college, these students can likely get into a better four-year college than they could have gotten into right out of high school. Two-year colleges offer their students core liberal arts courses (which can often be transferred to four-year colleges later) and/or technical training in many different fields at a very low price. That’s critically important if paying for college is a major concern for your family. That last point about very low cost is perhaps the main reason that kids head to a community college right out of high school. The fact that community college is so much cheaper than any four-year option--and the fact that kids can live at home and save even more money--is sometimes irresistible. We know that students can get financial aid of all kinds from four-year colleges, which could make their time there essentially free, but none of those deals is a sure thing. Paying the very low tuition at a community college, especially with whatever financial aid is available, is a sure thing. 2. The Cons of Community Colleges: A Review So, what’s the downside of going to a community college? As we have said before at USACollegeChat, the choice of a community college for students coming right out of high school is quite different from that same choice when it is being made by adults returning to college or starting college for the first time. My own nonprofit organization has done market studies for quite a few community colleges interested in increasing their adult enrollment (that is, students over the age of 25) and in serving those adult students better. And, to be fair, community colleges are a great institution for getting adults into college study or back into college study. But, we are focused today on your kid, who is going to college right out of high school, and some of the statistics about community college completion rates and transfer-to-four-year-college rates are just plain scary. You have to deal with this statistic: Not even half of community college students complete any college degree in six years--not even a two-year associate’s degree. Admittedly, that statistic includes all kinds of students who attend community colleges--from bright kids right out of high school who just needed to save money to returning adults who have been out of school for a decade to kids who struggled in high school and couldn’t get into a more selective college. Nonetheless, we have quoted evidence in previous USACollegeChat episodes that shows that students are more likely to graduate if they go to a more selective college, for many reasons. That is clearly a reason against having your kid choose a community college for next year. In addition to a seriously low completion rate, the transfer rate of students from community colleges to four-year colleges to earn bachelor’s degrees is also shockingly low, as we reported way back in Episode 64, based on an article in The Hechinger Report. Here is a statistic, which was taken from a report from Teachers College, Columbia University: . . . 80 percent of entering community college students say they intend to earn a bachelor’s degree, but only about a quarter actually make the transfer and 17 percent eventually get the degree. (quoted from the article) Parents, we said in Episode 113 that we thought you should think hard about whether your kid is different from the typical community college student--smarter, harder working, more motivated, more goal oriented. Just being younger might not help enough. The statistics are telling you that he or she is likely not to graduate with even an associate’s degree and is likely not to transfer to that great four-year college you say you are saving up your money for. 3. President Mellow’s Point of View And now we come to President Mellow’s point of view. I have to admit that some of my attitude toward community colleges comes from my belief that kids who can get into a satisfactory four-year college and who can figure out how to pay for it (including through loans and other unpleasant devices) should go directly to that four-year college. I worry that kids who could go to a four-year college, but don’t, will get sidetracked into community college and never get out. But perhaps I have not given sufficient thought to kids who cannot go to a four-year college, especially for financial reasons. Let’s look at some excerpts from President Mellow’s recent opinion piece: You might think the typical college student lives in a state of bliss, spending each day moving among classes, parties and extracurricular activities. But the reality is that an increasingly small population of undergraduates enjoys that kind of life. Of the country’s nearly 18 million undergraduates, more than 40 percent go to community college, and of those, only 62 percent can afford to go to college full time. By contrast, a mere 0.4 percent of students in the United States attend one of the Ivies. The typical student is not the one burnishing a fancy résumé with numerous unpaid internships. It’s just the opposite: Over half of all undergraduates live at home to make their degrees more affordable, and a shocking 40 percent of students work at least 30 hours a week. About 25 percent work full time and go to school full time. (quoted from the article) Of course, some of these students who work full time and go to school full time are adult students over the age of 25--but, not all of them. For example, a lot of students who graduate from urban high schools, like the one we co-founded in Brooklyn, head off to college with both the intention and the necessity of working while they are enrolled. Marie and I worried that our students wouldn’t be able to do both successfully. We worried that they were going to have a hard enough time in college without spending 10 or 15 or 20 hours a week--or more--at a job. But, given their family circumstances, many of them had no choice, just as President Mellow writes. She continues: As open-access institutions, community colleges educate the majority of our country’s low-income, first-generation students. But public funding for community colleges is significantly less than for four-year colleges, sometimes because of explicit state policies. This means the amount that community colleges can spend on each student--to pay for faculty, support services, tutoring and facilities--is far less as well. Tuition for low-income students can be covered by federal financial aid programs, but these students often have significant other costs--including housing, transportation, food and child care--that regularly pose obstacles to their education. A recent Urban Institute study found that from 2011 to 2015, one in five students attending a two-year college lived in a food-insecure household. A study from the Wisconsin Hope Lab found that in 2016, 14 percent of community college students had been homeless at some point. At LaGuardia Community College in New York, where I am president, 77 percent of students live in households making less than $25,000 per year. With financial pressures like these, studying full time is not an option. It is not uncommon for a student to take between three and six years to graduate from a two-year associate degree program. (quoted from the article) And we can see why. Those statistics are sobering, and they do put community colleges’ lousy completion rates into perspective. Of course, you would still want your kid to come out of a community college on time so that he or she could move forward and transfer to a four-year college or enter the workforce and get a decent job. This is especially true if you, as a parent, can manage to pay the cost of attending a community college and keep distractions for your kid--like working a significant number of hours a week--down to a minimum. Not surprisingly, President Mellow argues for a better financial deal for community colleges and their students, both in government funding and, interestingly, in philanthropy. She writes: Community colleges need increased funding, and students need access to more flexible federal and state financial aid, enhanced paid internships and college work-study programs. Improved access to public supports, like food stamps and reduced public transportation fares, would also make a world of difference. It’s not just that policy must change. Last year, more than $41 billion was given in charity to higher education, but about a quarter of that went to just 20 institutions. Community colleges, with almost half of all undergraduate students, received just a small fraction of this philanthropy. It is imperative that individuals, corporations and foundations spread their wealth and diversify where they donate their dollars. (quoted from the article) I have to tell you that I was so embarrassed that my two alma maters might be on that list of 20 institutions that I didn’t even look at it--because obviously that is just the very definition of unfair advantage and privilege. 4. What’s Herb Alpert Got To Do with It? Some months ago, I wrote a piece for my own blog, ParentChat with Regina, about the importance of music in a child’s education. But the really arresting part of the piece was about Herb Alpert, trumpeter extraordinaire and co-founder of A&M Records. (If you are too young to remember Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass, go listen to Alpert’s signature style on YouTube. Start with “Tijuana Taxi” and “This Guy’s In Love With You”--and stay for all the rest.) As it turns out, Alpert has done what President Mellow wishes more people would do. His foundation--co-founded with his wife, singer Lani Hall--has made a $10.1 million gift to Los Angeles City College (LACC), a two-year public community college. The money will create an endowment, which will be used to raise the number of music majors enrolled from 175 to 250 and to provide ALL of them with FREE tuition. As reported by Carolina A. Miranda in the Los Angeles Times, Alpert said this about his gift: LACC is a gem of an institution. . . . [My] biggest motivation was helping kids who don’t have the financial energy to go to a major college. At LACC, they’ve nurtured thousands of dedicated students every year. My brother went there. My ex-partner [record producer] Lou Adler went there. I’ve visited the school. It’s alive. It’s kickin’. (quoted from the article) Alpert noted that he was especially interested in supporting a public institution where students of all socioeconomic backgrounds could get a college education. It’s as if he were simply channeling President Mellow. 5. So, What About Community Colleges? So, where does all that leave us--or rather, you? Well, we are probably going to continue to worry when seniors choose a community college as their first step into higher education. We are going to continue to worry that some of them are going to have difficulty graduating from a community college in anything close to two years and/or transferring to a four-year college ever. But we are also going to admit that financial constraints can cause families to choose a path that might not be as perfect as we would like for their own kids. If that is your situation, talk with your kid and think hard about the community college option. Think about how to keep working hours to a minimum so that study hours can be at a maximum. Talk about how important it is to stay on track and make progress toward graduation every semester. Help make the statistics better. Find our books on Amazon! It's probably just as well that when I received the audio file of this week's show the bit at the beginning about having a cup of medicinal mushrooms to drink (chaga), was missing. Of course this was a source of much hilarity to Ross Allen, and nuff jokes abounded in the studio about Cosmic Jam/mushrooms/magic/hippies, which begs the question, am I? A hippy, that is... well I do drink medicinal mushrooms, am more or less vegan, love a bit of yoga/chi gong/meditation, however I don't wear tie-dye, smoke weed, or say "cosmic" much except in the context of the show. Hippies, if such a concept or subcultural group makes any sense in this day and age doubtless do come in many guises, and who's to say what kind of music they should like? In my experience a lot of those who ostensibly advocate the modern version of the "hippy" credo have pretty awful taste in music...psi-trance? Dodgy ambience with clichéd beats? It may be "cosmic", but it also lacks the soul and expansiveness that I search for in life and music. So what do I mean by cosmic? I've always thought of it as referencing Clinton's "Cosmic Slop"and the whole sic-fi, space obsessed vein that runs through music from Sun Ra to Earth Wind And Fire etc, that and the idea that the radio/airwaves/ether is a much more metaphysical space than the dance-floor, a space where music should necessarily and logically be more expansive. However my tastes also have a more terrestrial bent, I don't just spiral off into galactic reveries, at least not all the time! I very much doubt that I'm the best judge of my radio shows, after all they're not really for me. Having said that if I'm not pleasing myself the whole thing would be a fairly pointless exercise, after all the time that I've been in the game, I'd like to declare that I'm not really "in the game"; I'm just doing my thing, and I hope in doing so it reaches a few sympathetic ears and touches the odd soul. All I can say is that for whatever reasons, this particular Cosmic Jam pleased me more than most, maybe it's the balance of the tunes, the way I felt, the fact that I'd noticed the first stirrings of Spring that day, who knows? What I do know is that it kicks off with a cosmic nugget from Joe Claussell and Stefan Prescott's Spiritual Life which was undoubtedly one of my favourite labels during a period when I took much more interest in house music than I dip these days. The "Kuniyuki" remix of Slam Mode's "Pacifica" is certainly something of latter day hippy anthem, suitably expansive and a nice way to set up the show. Staying with newness for the first sequence there's more from The Rebirth, Rhonda Thomas, Native Dancer, and Ben Cox Band, all providing reasons to be cheerful and optimistic about the state of new music. Which is not something I'm feeling when I try to get with the latest crop electronic artists, but it's not for me to shout "emperor's new clothes".... The point I was trying to make about Mark Murphy's interpretation of Michel Colombier and Paul Williams "We Could Be Flying", (Williams also penned the words to We've Only Just Begun, so one might surmise he was something of an optimist!). The tune, which I've always loved, can certainly sound bombastic in the wrong hands, but Murphy brings such fluidity and looseness to proceedings he avoids those traps, and by underplaying the message he possibly nails the quintessential version. Another vocal gem follows, the album produced by (Jamaican born) Esmond Edwards, a man whose career is not often celebrated but whose credentials would rank him way up there amongst the greatest, is by Gloria Lynne, a vocalist who's career again had an enormous span and range, this version of "Out Of This World" is funky, fun, soulful and impeccably arranged. Following glorious Gloria, more lush female vocals from Flora Purim who at this time in the mid eighties was sounding beyond wonderful, her innate Brazilian swing and sweetness embellished by a seasoned huskiness. "Jogral" was written by the incredible José Neto, a Hendrix-like guitar genius who featured heavily in Airto and Flora's bands around this period. I saw Neto perform alongside Airto and Flora with the band Fourth World several times, and his playing never ceased to amaze and inspire. Grupo Afro Cuba Havana, a progressive Cuban outfit licenced to a European label, come with the fusion tinged but authentically lovely "Maria", Kahil El Zabaar I say plenty about on the show, and the Bill English tune "7th Ave Bill" is the kind of Jazz that needs little in the way of explanation, proper. The second hour kicks off with the Detroit Escalator Company's "Twilight Finding", a collaboration between DEC's Neil Ollivierra and Ayro, which may have been DEC's last release (2006), which is sad because Neil Ollivierra made some sumptuously gorgeous music under the DEC moniker. Matthew Halsall never fails to establish a great atmosphere on his recordings, they are conceptually almost flawless, and his treatment of Alice Coltrane's "Journey In Satchidananda" weighs in with the acoustic bass wringing every last drop of heaviness from that timeless line, and follows through with some beautiful flute work, and trumpet from the man himself. Independent and beautifully odd jazz follows in the shape of Jerry Granelli's "Aslan", bass-line heavy once again, as is Lani Hall's version of Lesley Duncan's "Love Song". Keeping the bass but getting supremely analogue synth (you don't get any better than T.O.N.T.O) Malcolm Cecil produced some of Gil Scott Heron's best work bringing his brand of sonic expertise into play, and the combination of that mellifluous synth bass and Gil's redoubtably upbeat "Better Days Ahead" is truly lovely. Last half hour veers between Latin tinged soulfulness and plain funkiness, the rare, the overlooked, the new and old all forming a fitting finale to a show which floated my boat. I hope it doesn't sink yours!! Peace, love, and medicinal mushrooms.. P.x 1. Slam Mode - Pacifica (Kuniyuki Takahashi remix) 2. Native Dancer - Until Frida Speaks 3. Rhonda Thomas - Oh Yay 4.
