Episode 082: People, Places & Things by Duncan Macmillan Host: Douglas Schatz Guests: Duncan Macmillan and Jeremy Herrin Welcome to The Play Podcast where we explore the greatest new and classic plays. Each episode we choose a single play to talk about in depth with our expert guest. We'll discuss the play's origins, its themes, characters, structure and impact. For us the play is the thing. Duncan Macmillan's People, Places & Things is a blisteringly frank and funny portrait of addiction and invented identity. When the play premiered at the National Theatre in 2015, Denise Gough won awards for her electrifying performance, and as we record this episode she revives her role in London's West End. It is a fascinating and challenging play, and an exhilarating piece of theatre. I am delighted to talk in this episode with its author, Duncan Macmillan, and the production's director, Jeremy Herrin.
Fans of the Star Wars universe will no doubt recognise Ireland's Denise Gough as steely Andor villain Dedra Meero. But it was back in 2015 that she was catapulted to stardom with her role as Emma in Duncan Macmillan's existential addiction drama, People, Places & Things. Almost ten years on, People, Places & Things is back and so is Denise with a proper barnstormer of a performance in a play that's funny, clever, vivid, devastating and one of the most emotionally intelligent takes on addiction, recovery and our notions of self our Mick's ever seen. Denise is herself a former addict, so in this episode, she and Mick are talking about addiction, the dark humour of addicts, notions of self, that time psychiatrists had a fight in the foyer, and why it's important to see women in roles like this. People, Places & Things runs until August 10 at Trafalgar Theatre. https://trafalgartheatre.com/shows/people-places-and-things/ Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Charlotte Hope, renowned for her roles in "Game of Thrones" and "The Spanish Princess", joins Lucy in her childhood home in Dorset. Together, they dive into Duncan Macmillan's powerful play "Lungs" and the complexities of deciding to have children in an uncertain world. Charlotte shares her thoughts on balancing the demanding life of an actress with the desire to become a mother, the intricacies of the Meisner technique, and why Duncan Macmillan's writing resonates so deeply with women, both in "Lungs" and the current West End production of "People, Places and Things". This episode is a heartfelt and insightful look at the intersection of career, personal life, and the art of acting.Hear Me Out is hosted by Lucy Eaton, a theatre producer and West End / screen actress best known for her role as Lucy in hit BBC comedy ‘Staged'. After missing its initial run, Mickey-Jo was thrilled when PEOPLE, PLACES & THINGS announced a West End return, giving him the chance to finally see it earlier this month. The piece, which focuses on addiction and recovery, is written by Duncan Macmillan and centres on the award winning performance of Denise Gough. It was originally staged at the National Theatre before transferring to the Wyndham's Theatre in London's West End and has now returned at the Trafalgar Theatre. Hosted on Acast. Bookwaves/Artwaves is produced and hosted by Richard Wolinsky. Links to assorted local theater & book venues Martin Amis (1949-2023), in conversation with Richard Wolinsky, recorded in the KPFA studio on a book tour for “The Zone of Interest,” October 29, 2014 Novelist and essayist Martin Amis died of cancer on May 19, 2023 at the age of 73, leaving behind such novels as The Rachel Papers, London Fields, The Information, and his last memoir-cum-novel, Inside Story. On October 29th, 2014, Richard Wolinsky conducted the last of five interviews with Martin Amis, about Amis's then most recent novel, The Zone of Interest. A new film adaptation of that novel recently opened to rave reviews. Complete Interview Amos Oz (1939-2018), author of “A Tale of Love and Darkness” and other books, in conversation with Richard Wolinsky, recorded in San Francisco in November, 2004, while he was on tour for his memoir, “A Tale of Love and Darkness”. Encore podcast originally posted on January 13, 2019. Amos Oz, the noted Israeli novelist, short story writer, essayist and peace activist, and perennial Nobel Prize candidate, died on December 28th, 2018 at the age of 79. The author of forty books, he was a firm believer in the two-state solution who felt, over the previous decade, that the hope for peace appears to be slipping away. Today, it's gotten worse of course. Today his greatest work is considered to be the memoir of his family, set against the background of the rise of Nazi Germany, World War II, and the formation of the state of Israel, and culminating in the suicide of his mother. A Tale of Love and Darkness, was published in Israel in 2002 and two years later in the United States. Bookwaves/Artwaves is produced and hosted by Richard Wolinsky. Links to assorted local theater & book venues Bookwaves Anne Rice died of a stroke on December 11, 2021. This career-ranging interview was recorded on December 2, 2016 at Books Inc. in Opera Plaza in San Francisco, while she was on tour for her latest novel, “Prince Lestat and the Realms of Atlantis.” Anne Rice achieved success in 1976 with her novel “Interview with the Vampire,” which spawned a series of novels titled “The Vampire Chronicles” and became a world-wide phenomenon. Along the way, she also wrote several other novels including the Mayfair Witches trilogy, Cry to Heaven, a series of books under pseudonyms, and the screenplay for “Interview with the Vampire” was turned into a successful film starring Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt. By 2003, she'd written ten novels in the Vampire Chronicles and took a break, writing novels on the life of Jesus, on angels, and on werewolves. In 2014, she returned to her vampire hero, Lestat, with Prince Lestat. Prince Lestat and the Realm of Atlantis was the second in this latest series. Since the interview was recorded, Anne Rice published one more Lestat novel, Blood Communion: A Tale of Prince Lestat in 2018, which is her last solo novel to date, though it's possible there are more to come. There are two novels written in collaboration with her son, novelist Christopher Rice, sequels to her 1989 novel Ramses the Damned. The Passion of Cleopatra was released in 2017 and The Reign of Osiris in 2022. Two seasons of a television adaptation of Interview with the Vampire and one season of The Mayfair Witches can be found on the AMC+ app. Complete Interview Book Interview/Events and Theatre Links Note: Shows may unexpectedly close early or be postponed due to actors' positive COVID tests. Slán Irish Voice Two weeks ago Niall O'Dowd, founder of the Irish American newspaper The Irish Voice announced that it was to close after 36 years. The New York based Irish Voice and the Irish Echo were the principle sources of news for decades of Irish Americans and new Irish immigrants moving to the USA. Now the Irish Voice is gone. But a far sighted Niall O'Dowd realised some years ago the direction of travel for newspapers competing against the huge growth in online media services and founded the online Irish Central. Today IrishCentral.com gets over two million visitors monthly.Every Brilliant ThingListening, as I usually do on Sunday mornings, to Sunday with Miriam on RTE Radio after Sunday Miscellany I really enjoyed Altan's tunes and Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh's craic. I was also very taken by the preview of Every Brilliant Thing which is being staged at The Galway Arts Festival.Theatre Director Andrew Flynn gave us an insight into this play by Duncan Macmillan. Essentially this is about a young man who starts, at the age of seven, to compile a list of those things which make his life worth living. This is while he is battling with the challenges of the different stages of his life, including his mother's attempt at suicide. War Crimes in JeninThe Israeli Government's assault on Jenin, the Palestinian refugee camp, in the occupied west Bank left 12 people dead and scores more injured. Using bombs, Apache helicopters, drones, bulldozers and hundreds of troops Israel's apartheid regime imposed a reign of terror on the 14,000 people who live in Jenin. More than 3,000 civilians were displaced from their homes.

Bram Suijker is acteur.

It's time for another visit with Midday theater critic J. Wynn Rousuck, who joins Tom this week with her review of Single Carrot Theatre's production of Every Brilliant Thing, a solo show being performed outdoors in multiple neighborhood venues with a rotating cast of three SCT actors. Co-written in 2016 by British playwright Duncan MacMillan with Irish actor Jonny Donahoe, Every Brilliant Thing explores the lengths to which we'll go for those we love. Within the play's life-affirming and joyful storyline, audiences are asked to help tell a moving story of a young child's hopefulness and resilience, despite contending with an emotionally unstable mother. Co-directed by SCT's Paul Diem and ensemble co-founder and artistic director Genevieve De Mahy, the play features rotating performances by SCT ensemble members Matthew Shea, Lauren Erica Jackson and Meghan Stanton. SCT's fifteen performances of Every Brilliant Thing run through September 26th, during Suicide Prevention Month. To spotlight the issue and provide resources for those seeking assistance, SCT has partnered with three mental-health support organizations: the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, On Our Own of Maryland and B'more Clubhouse. People in immediate need of help may also call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-8255. For more information on Single Carrot Theatre's Every Brilliant Thing, click here.

Concept en regie: Laura van ZuijlenTechniek en montage: Alex KramerMuziek: Utopia and Visions (Don Cherry, 1972)The plays of the British playwright Duncan Macmillan are performed all around the world. What makes their stories so universal? In this episode of HNTpodcast Macmillan is interviewed about two of them: Every Brilliant Thing and Lungs. They discuss taboo subjects in a light manner and give a spark of hope and comfort. Macmillan is radical in his attention to the audience. The accompanying music is the song Utopia and Visions by Don Cherry. It’s the song Macmillan listens to when he seeks comfort. Find it in our Spotify-list ‘Every Brilliant Song’.
Episode 007: Lungs by Duncan Macmillan Host: Douglas Schatz Guest: George Spender, former editorial director at Oberon Books. Welcome to The Play Podcast where we explore the greatest new and classic plays. Each episode we choose a single play, which we talk about it in more depth than you will find in the reviews of any one production. We'll discuss the play's origins, its themes, characters, structure and impact. For us the play is the thing. A young couple navigate the age-old debate of whether or when to embark on having a baby. They are naturally worried about their personal responsibilities, but most topically they are also concerned about the impact that their adding to the global population will have on the world's climate and future. Duncan Macmillan's award-winning play written in 2011, was revived at the Old Vic in 2019 with Claire Foy and Matt Smith conducting the debate. They will shortly reprise their roles via the Old Vic's innovative in Camera live stream for a limited run from 26th June. Joining us to review the ongoing debate is George Spender, former editorial director at Oberon Books who publish Lungs and the playwright's other plays. Our conversation was recorded via video link during the Coronavirus lockdown.
Matt Humphrey and I had the opportunity to fly over to New York and catch People, Places & Things at the St Anne’s Warehouse in Brooklyn. With both of us having seen the show a couple times before, we got to watch it again before heading backstage last Friday night. And I cannot begin to tell you how phenomenal this production was. The company has grown in stature, taking Jeremy Herrin’s production of Duncan Macmillan’s play to new heights.

Comedian and actor Jonny Donohoe talks about the Edinburgh Fringe and New York success of Every Brilliant Thing by Duncan Macmillan, as well as his experiences of working interactively with audiences and playing opposite Sarah Jessica Parker. After a successful run on the Edinburgh Fringe in Paines Plough's portable Roundabout Theatre at Summerhall, the production transferred to Barrow Street Theatre in New York from 5 December 2014 until 29 March 2015. Following its run in New York, Every Brilliant Thing will embark on an extensive UK Tour.
Every Brilliant Thing is a one-man show that features a large supporting cast. The show's other big self-contradictory element is its exploration of the impenetrable sadness of depression through things that uplift us, specifically, a list of things that make life worth living. This mildly immersive show is written by Duncan Macmillan, directed by George Perrin and features a sole performer, Jonny Donahoe. But Donahoe conscripts numerous members of the audience to play minor or sometimes major roles in the play. Every Brilliant Thing was a hit at the Edinburgh Festival and now North American audiences are getting their first chance to see it in an Off-Broadway production at the Barrow Street Theater. New York Times theater critic Charles Isherwood looks for the brilliance in Every Brilliant Thing and shares what he finds.
