How did the German House of Hanover ever end up on the British throne? This episode explores how it happened and the ensuing fight with the supporters of a rival dynastic claim - The Jacobites.Join my Supporter's ClubFor 100 years, four Hanoverian kings named George sat on the throne. They were to oversee the last major land battle ever fought on British soil, the conquest of India and Canada, the loss of the American colonies, victory over Napoleonic France, the birth of the industrial (& agricultural) revolutions, the arrival of Britain's canal system and first steam locomotives. They were to see the the luxuriant John Nash style buildings showing off Britain's growing wealth..a wealth based on an ever-growing empire and, unfortunately on the slave trade. But that industrialisation also caused immense social and economic hardship, which built a clamour for reform, not just of living conditions but of the way Britain was ruled too.And in this volatile world, the wiff of revolution was in the air.Welcome to the story of the Georgians.Support the show

Episode 465 with Robyn Dora Radway hosted by Emily NeumeierWhat was it like to be a foreigner living in Ottoman Istanbul? In this episode, our guest Robyn Dora Radway answers this question by providing an in-depth look at an unusual type of document: alba amicorum, or friendship albums, which were essentially the social media of the sixteenth century. Produced in the Habsburg embassy (aka the “German House"), these albums functioned like yearbooks in that the owners residing in the embassy would strive to collect all manner of mementos from their time abroad, including signatures, poems, short anecdotes, and even drawings and paintings. At the German House, men from all walks of life would end up assembling their own album amicorum, from the Habsburg ambassador to the cook (who was quite popular and had the largest album by far). We discuss how these albums can thus serve as a valuable resource for historians, as they offer a full picture of the social makeup of these kinds of diplomatic spaces—information that does not often turn up in more traditional archives. « Click for More »

Fairview is a Pulitzer Prize-winning play just opened at the Young Vic in London. It starts out like a conventional US African American dramedy and then begins to mess with the audience's expectations. How will our reviewers feel about it? Chinese film So Long My Son has won awards at international film festivals. It tells the story of a family over 30 years of turbulent Chinese history Annette Hess' prize-winning novel The German House is the story of a Polish translator at the 1963 Frankfurt Auschwitz trials. Caught between societal and familial expectations and her unique ability to speak truth to power—as she fights to expose the dark truths of her nation’s past. If everything your family told you was a lie, how far would you go to uncover the truth? A new exhibition of work by British abstract painter John Walker at Ikon in Birmingham includes new paintings A Very Scandi Scandal has just started in the Walter Presents slot on Channel 4. It's a Swedish comedy heist with two extremely unlikely bank robbers Shahidha Bari's guests are Dea Birkett, Kit Davis and Robert Hanks. The German House by Annette Hess. This is about a young German translator who is employed at the Frankfurt Auschwitz Trials in 1963, and in the course of her work comes to understand a completely different story about the war and what happened than the ones she learned from her family – who wouldn't talk about it, but now she wonders what it is they've been hiding. The Body by Bill Bryson. Famous for his travel narratives, he's turned his mind to a few other things as well – America in 1963 (One Summer); the home in At Home – A Short History of Private Life – and now he doe the human body. Jam packed with absolutely fascinating information and stories, with his usual wit and humour, this book is a real delight and would be a fantastic present for anyone – but you'd have to read it yourself before handing it over. Very well informed, and very funny. There is no one else writing like this.

Alvin I. Goldman (Rutgers) meets Stephan Hartmann (MCMP/LMU) in a joint session on "Bridging the Gap between Informal and Formal Social Epistemology" at the MCMP workshop "Bridges 2014" (2 and 3 Sept, 2014, German House, New York City). The 2-day trans-continental meeting in mathematical philosophy focused on inter-theoretical relations thereby connecting form and content of this philosophical exchange. Idea and motivation: We use theories to explain, to predict and to instruct, to talk about our world and order the objects therein. Different theories deliberately emphasize different aspects of an object, purposefully utilize different formal methods, and necessarily confine their attention to a distinct field of interest. The desire to enlarge knowledge by combining two theories presents a research community with the task of building bridges between the structures and theoretical entities on both sides. Especially if no background theory is available as yet, this becomes a question of principle and of philosophical groundwork: If there are any – what are the inter-theoretical relations to look like? Will a unified theory possibly adjudicate between monist and dualist positions? Under what circumstances will partial translations suffice? Can the ontological status of inter-theoretical relations inform us about inter-object relations in the world? Find more about the meeting at www.lmu.de/bridges2014.

Stephan Hartmann (MCMP/LMU) gives an evening lecture on "Mathematical Philosophy, Science and Public Policy", hosted by the German Center for Research and Innovation (GCRI) on occasion of the MCMP workshop "Bridges 2014" in the German House, New York City (2 and 3 September, 2014). Abstract: What is the proper method of philosophy? To what extent does the philosophical method differ from the scientific method? Many philosophers believe that philosophy is an armchair activity and that the exact methods of the natural and social sciences cannot guide philosophical research. Scientific Philosophy, on the contrary, maintains that philosophical theses and arguments should be just as clear and precise as scientific ones: philosophers ought to build theories and models as much as scientists do; and the application of mathematical methods as well as input from empirical studies are often necessary in order to gain new insights into old philosophical questions and to progress to new and deeper ones. This talk spells out Scientific Philosophy by focusing on central themes from the philosophy of science. It focuses on understanding aspects of scientific rationality and presents descriptively adequate and normatively interesting models of intertheoretic relations, scientific reasoning, and decision-making in a scientific community. These topics have a philosophical as well as a scientific dimension, and addressing them requires a combination of methods from both areas.
