Send us a Text Message.Boy, what a tough few days I have had. There has been a lot of emotion churning inside me. I'll let you listen, but here are some key points in my mind that I want to get across to you:1. We hope to always have our memories, and therefore we buy things to memorialize special occasions or events, hoping that somehow the stuff will allow us to recapture the feelings from that event or occasion - to take us back there, even for just a moment. 2. It's Our life, and it's Our stuff. It isn't Their life and it's not Their stuff. They will have plenty of their own stuff. 3. Go do the thing. Don't wait your whole life and then not be able to enjoy the fruit of your labor. 4. Guard your tongue before you speak so you don't have to eat the words later. Lastly: Our memories are something we keep and give away at the same time, in the stories we share with others and the mementos we've collected along the way. Send us a Text Message.MEMENTOOur Nolan Void Season continues with the first of our second pairing MEMENTO (2000). Many of you might suspect we would try writing these show notes in reverse, but, as that'd be too meta for us, we'll leave that to some other aspiring writer with memory problems we know. Speaking of self-referential memory problems, Memento was actually the film that couldn't find distribution that Steven Soderberg claimed could be the bellwether of the death of the 90's indie cinema wave (see our erroneous show notes for FOLLOWING, Season 12, Episode 1).Listen past the awesome intro song for a surprise guest giving the plot synopsis this week, dogs barking not on command, and, to the eagle-eared listener, the return of the squeaky chair. Sir Nolan upon reflection stated there was a greater leap between his first feature Following and Memento than any between project. He had to trust another behind the camera (Wally Pfister, who'd shoot this and the next six Nolan films and win an Academy Award for INCEPTION) and had union rules and budgeted shooting schedules (losing some days when relocated from Canada to the States). Eventual Dame Emma Thomas would not be the executive producer as she was working at a different company. Memento also would star professional actors, a stellar lineup perhaps thanks to the early interest of Brad Pitt in the role of the Leonard instead played by the amazing Guy Pearce and costarring two actors hot off the success of the MATRIX: Carrie-Anne Moss and Joey Pants.Written concurrently with his younger brother (no “Sir”) Jonathan Nolan who'd develop his premise into a short story “Memento Mori” published in Esquire, the movie Memento follows an amnesiac and heavily tattooed protagonist Leonard (the former attribute part of but latter absent from the short story) as he pursues seeking revenge on his wife's mysterious killer, having himself somehow contracted a condition similar to Sammy Jenkins, a man who allegedly retain all of his memories up to a specific moment of trauma but afterwards could form no new memories. But is there more similarities between Jenkins and Leonard than his memory triggered by the tattoo “Remember Sammy Jenkins” allows? To unravel this story told backwards and to find a deeper understanding as its paired with next week's TENET, cohosts Ken and Thomas are again joined by the provisional host Ryan, who also recorded the intro/outro music. According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, a curio is "something considered novel, rare, or bizarre." A memento is "something that serves to warn or remind." Today's light hearted episode encourages you to look around; go on a treasure hunt and search for curios, mementos, and everyday Ebenezers. Don't know what an Ebenezer is? We're glad you asked. Today's podcast also includes two special guest cameos - my brother Dwight Kidd and one of my best friends, Jeff Gore. And hopefully, after coming to today's Table, your souvenirs will start speaking to you every time you look their way. Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth Interview with Frank Sinatra Expert, Charles Pignone, Senior VP, Frank Sinatra Enterprises About Harvey's guests: Today's guest, Charles Pignone, is a producer and author who is instrumental in preserving, perpetuating and honouring the legacy of the most popular and beloved vocalist and entertainer of all time, Frank Sinatra. His close association with the Sinatra family, which has been ongoing for over 40 years, began in 1984, when at the age of 18, he became the President of the Sinatra Society of America. That position allowed him to get to know Frank Sinatra and his family, and evolved into a full time job, culminating in his current position as senior vice president of Frank Sinatra Enterprises. He's produced several books about Sinatra, starting with “The Sinatra Treasures: Intimate Photos, Mementos, and Music from the Sinatra Family Collection”, which is filled with never-before-seen photos, letters and mementos from the Sinatra family archives. Then, in 2007 he released “Frank Sinatra: The Family Album”, which chronicles the private life of the iconic star, filled with rare photos, and firsthand recollections and stories from his family and close friends. And then in 2015, to commemorate Sinatra's 100th birthday, our guest, in conjunction with Sinatra's 3 children, released a book entitled, “Sinatra 100”, which is an intimate and dramatic visual portrait of Frank Sinatra, revealing many of the previously unseen moments in a remarkable life. Our guest also wrote the beautiful commemorative programs for the 2 groundbreaking multi-media concert productions – the first one in 2003 at Radio City Music Hall entitled, “Sinatra: His Voice, His World, His Way”, and the second one in 2006, “Sinatra At the London Palladium”. He produced a wonderful documentary called “The Rat Pack Captured”, as well as the 2011 TV Special, “Sinatra Sings”. And he was an executive producer on the excellent 2015 miniseries, “Sinatra: All or Nothing at All”. He's produced dozens of albums and box sets including some of my favourites, “Frank Sinatra: Nothing But The Best”, “Frank Sinatra: Vegas” and “The Rat Pack Live and Swingin': The Ultimate Rat Pack Collection”. And if all of that weren't enough, our guest also produced a fascinating book entitled, “The Copa: Jules Podell and the Hottest Club North of Havana”, which is a beautifully illustrated history and a mesmerizing look behind the scenes at the legendary Copacabana nightclub in New York. Too late, Tom felt the chilling “click” beneath his combat boots. Instinctively he bounded away in an adrenaline-fueled leap. The deadly device hidden underground didn’t detonate. Later, the explosive ordnance disposal team unearthed eighty pounds of high explosives from the spot. Tom wore those boots until they fell apart. “My lucky boots,” he calls them. Tom may have clung to those boots simply to commemorate his close call. But people are often tempted to consider objects “lucky” or to even give them the more spiritual label “blessed.” Danger arrives when we credit an object—even a symbol—as a source of God’s blessing. The Israelites learned this the hard way. The Philistine army had just routed them in battle. As Israel reviewed the debacle, someone thought of taking the “ark of the LORD’s covenant” into a rematch (1 Samuel 4:3). That seemed like a good idea (vv. 6–9). After all, the ark of the covenant was a holy object. But the Israelites had the wrong perspective. By itself, the ark couldn’t bring them anything. Putting their faith in an object instead of in the presence of the one true God, the Israelites suffered an even worse defeat, and the enemy captured the ark (v. 10). Mementos that remind us to pray or to thank God for His goodness are fine. But they’re never the source of blessing. That is God—and God alone.

In this retrospective, in what may be our longest episode yet, we hand out a whole slew of awards, really tear into the themes, and try to figure out exactly why we've come away from this series with the impression we did of its quality. Along the way we also rank every book in the series, finally actually talk about our own end-of-season beads, and peer far into the future of the Riordan family line. We also take a very special look at The Blood of Olympus's alternate ending, which seemingly hasn't been discussed anywhere else at all! Come back next week for Demigods and Magicians! [00:30] Donald Trump Is Sentimental (19 minutes) Democrats have been speculating for months about what motivated Donald Trump to hold onto documents “bearing classification markings” after leaving the White House. Joe Scarborough says Trump did it for the money, as if America's enemies are lining up to purchase state secrets woven into White House napkins. Last week, the New York Times admitted that Trump held onto the documents because he likes collecting mementos. Karl Rove says this “childish impulse” to save sentimental items is a grave threat to America. John Bolton said Trump's desire to collect things is “very disturbing.” Despite all the problems America is facing, the elites pretend to be outraged in order to convince the public that Donald Trump's retention of mementos is really what puts the nation at risk. [19:30] Donald Trump's Courage (20 minutes) Over the weekend, Bill Barr said that Donald Trump is a “petty individual who will always put his interests ahead of the country's.” Since becoming president, Trump has lost over $1 billion in value and has lost most of his friends. During his presidency, he never took a government salary. And despite dozens of baseless investigations against him, he continues to press forward. [39:00] Race Baiter in Chief: Barack Hussein Obama (15 minutes) Barack Obama is obsessed with talking about racial tension and strife. During a recent interview with David Axelrod, Obama could not leave the subject, turning every criticism of him over the past 15 years into a matter of race.
