In this episode, Steph Tuss and I get into why this set point is so pervasive among entrepreneurs, where it comes from, and what it’s quietly costing you in your health, your business, and your relationships. This is Part 3 of the Financial Setpoint Series. If you’re new to the series, Episode 729 introduces the full framework and includes access to the free Psychological Set Point Analyzer at lifeisnowinc.com/setpoint. Episode 730 covers the scarcity set point. Start there if you want the full picture. Survival Set Point: The Three Places It Shows Up in BusinessThe survival set point shows up most visibly in three areas. The first is client selection. When you’re operating from survival mode, the fear of having nothing is louder than your judgment about whether someone is a good fit. You take the client who gives you bad energy in the discovery call. You work with the team member you know is underperforming because the thought of not finding someone better feels too risky. The underlying belief is the same in both cases: if I say no to this, there might not be anything else. The second is scope creep. When a client pushes a deadline, asks for extra deliverables, or slips requests in outside the original agreement, you feel it in your body first — that tightening, that discomfort. But then your mind goes to work justifying it. They’re a good client. I don’t want them to be upset. I’ll just do it this once. And you cave. Every time. That’s not a communication problem. That’s a survival set point telling you that holding a boundary means losing something you can’t afford to lose. The third is the slow-period panic. When business slows down, the survival set point amplifies into something closer to crisis mode. Desperation and panic run together, and when you’re in panic, you lose the ability to think clearly. You slash prices and pivot to things you don’t actually want to do. You make reactive decisions that feel urgent but aren’t strategic — and the first thing you sacrifice is the clear thinking that would actually solve the problem. Survival Set Point: Where It Starts and Why Entrepreneurs Are Especially VulnerableMost of the business owners Steph and I have worked with over the past 35 years grew up in some form of a chaotic household. That’s not a coincidence. When your sense of safety as a child depended on reading the room, managing unpredictable people, or simply taking care of yourself, your nervous system learns to operate in survival mode as its default. The problem is that when you become an adult and start a business, your subconscious doesn’t automatically update. It keeps running the same programming — except now the stakes feel like payroll and client relationships instead of childhood survival. One of the things Steph pointed out in this conversation is that the survival set point is also a control set point. People who grew up in chaos learned to cope by controlling whatever they could. In business, that shows up as micromanaging your team when money gets tight, over-involvement in every decision, and an inability to delegate — not because you don’t trust your people, but because releasing control feels genuinely dangerous. The cost shows up in your team’s performance, in your health, and eventually in the sustainability of the business itself. The Cost — and the Path OutThe survival set point is one of the most physically taxing of the four types. The constant state of low-grade anxiety, dysregulated cortisol, and fear-based decision-making takes a real toll. Steph and I both see it in clients who are struggling with persistent health issues — fatigue, disrupted sleep, and the kind of chronic stress that accumulates when you never feel safe. The financial cost is equally real. Surviving month to month, using lines of credit to relieve pressure rather than to invest, and making decisions from fear rather than strategy — none of these move the business forward. They just buy another month. The way out is awareness first, then reprogramming. The Psychological Set Point Analyzer at lifeisnowinc.com/setpoint will tell you whether survival is your primary pattern, along with a seven-day plan to start shifting it. Steph and I are also hosting the Elite Mind Intensive on August 18th and 19th — two days focused specifically on set point work at a deeper level. Details are in the show notes. Episode 542 – Reverse Engineer Your Vision Episode 470 – Be Grateful for the Opportunity to Work Episode 129 – What’s the Difference Between a True Desire, a Want, Lust, or a Fear-Based Need? YOU'VE LEARNED THE STRATEGIES… SO WHY DOES YOUR REVENUE STILL CONTINUE TO PLATEAU?Here’s what I know about most business owners: They’re working hard, doing the right things, and still hitting the same income ceiling year after year. That ceiling has a name — it’s your Financial Set Point. It’s the unconscious limit you’ve placed on what you believe you can earn, and until you see it clearly, it runs the show no matter what strategies you put in place. That’s what we work on at my upcoming Business Intensive in August. Over two days, I'll help you identify your financial set point, understand why it’s there, and break through it so you can finally earn what you want without the constant struggle and hustle that’s been getting you nowhere. If that sounds like exactly what’s been missing, you don’t want to sit this one out. On this week's episode of Love University, we continue exploring the principle of Reversal and how paradoxical action can radically change the quality of your life. Instead of exhausting yourself by forcing outcomes, Reversal introduces a wiser approach. By changing how you relate to time, adversity, and even your own thoughts, you begin opening possibilities to better your life in a powerful way Here are three reversals that can transform your life: Get Your Time Back by Giving It Away Modern life teaches people to guard their time obsessively, yet rushing makes you feel emotionally depleted and disconnected. Reversal teaches that your experience of time expands when you invest it meaningfully in people and experiences you genuinely value. Sharing an unhurried conversation, spending relaxed time with family, helping others, or simply enjoying a quiet moment restores a sense of presence and spaciousness. Life begins to feel fuller, calmer, and more enjoyable. Be Grateful for the Bad as Well as the Good Painful experiences often contain life-changing lessons. Loss, disappointment, and hardship can deepen your appreciation for love, friendship, and the fragile beauty of life itself. When you begin looking for the meaning inside difficulties, your emotional perspective widens and your resilience grows stronger. Gratitude becomes more mature because it now includes both the joys of life and the wisdom gained through struggle. Remove Thoughts That Weaken You You may carry mental habits that quietly drain your energy. These include perfectionism, fear, and regret. Reversal teaches you to separate yourself from destructive patterns rather than automatically believing them. As you stop identifying with fearful or self-critical thoughts, your mind becomes steadier, and your confidence more grounded. Over time, you begin experiencing a freer and stronger version of yourself. Paradoxical action can help you reverse frustration and overcome mental self-sabotage. Start today. Do the opposite of what you've been doing to receive the greatest prizes in life: joy, inner mastery, and love. Welcome to Mike'D Up!, I'm your host, Mike DiCioccio, and I created this podcast back in 2019 with a mission to inspire other early-stage entrepreneurs to follow their dreams, level up in every way possible, personally and professionally, and to give them real, applicable advice and wisdom from experts who have actually done it before. No empty rah rah from people who haven't walked the walk. And since launching, I have interviewed over 275 experts, award-winning authors, business leaders, high-performance athletes, talented performers, and people who have never given up on themselves despite facing adversity in many rock-bottom moments. They have experienced many losses. Many heartbreaks. Personal setbacks. But they all have one thing in common: they never gave up. One of the many reasons that I get amped up to record this podcast every week, is because I'd love that one of stories told, one piece of advice given, or maybe something I cover in a solo episode…one thought sparks you to take action…and that action leads you closer to being the best version of yourself and somebody who you are proud of and you are making your dreams come true. Living in your greatness. That is the heartbeat of this show. So if that sounds like something you'd enjoy…then YOU are in the right place. Enjoy the show, share it with your friends or business connections that you feel it will resonate with. And always remember to BE GREAT and BE GRATEFUL in all that you do. Much love! This week, Thom Francis welcomes poets Kendall Hoeft and Poetyc Visionz to mic. They shared their work at the Brass Tacks open mic at The Low Beat in Albany, NY, on December 4, 2018. — The Brass Tacks open mic series at The Low Beat continued on Tuesday, December 4, 2018 with many poets signing up to share their work with the pre-holiday crowd. On that winter night, Kendall Hoeft, a poet and writer currently residing in California's Bay Area, read a poem titled “When the Body Breaks” and “Of Sea & Sky,” about fear and desire. The great Poetyc Visionz was up next with two poems. The poet and graphic designer who now lives in Atlanta, performed a new piece “I Met God on Lark St.” and then another with his signature wordplay (local poet and photographer Dan Wilcox says, “was an example of why he has been dubbed “the Pastor of Positivity””), “Be Grateful.”

A Thanksgiving Pardon: The Story of Thanksgiving and the Act of ForgivenessIn this episode of 'A Prisoner's Pardon Podcast', host Michi J. discusses the tradition of Thanksgiving and its symbolic relevance to forgiveness and gratitude. The discussion covers the origin of the holiday, starting with the turkey pardoning tradition initiated by President Abraham Lincoln in 1863, coinciding with the year of the Emancipation Proclamation. Michi J. encourages listeners to use Thanksgiving as a platform for forgiveness, seeing this act as a symbolic pardon akin to the pardoning of the Thanksgiving turkey. Emphasizing gratefulness beyond the holiday, the host suggests Thanksgiving should be a constant state of mind, inviting people to appreciate what they already have and find peace in it.00:00 Introduction to Thanksgiving and the Holiday Season01:40 The Origin of the Turkey Pardon Tradition03:35 The Symbolism of Pardoning in Our Lives04:16 The Importance of Forgiveness and Pardoning Others04:56 President Lincoln's Thanksgiving Presentation05:54 Thanksgiving: A State of Mind06:57 The Commercialization of Holidays and Appreciating What We Have07:22 Conclusion: The Need to Pardon and Be Grateful
What would you say if you could write a letter to your family, loved ones, and friends right now, in whatever phase you are in? What advice would you give? On three different occasions this week, as I have been running around, listening, and studying, I have run into just that. One was titled “Insights from my Life" by Neal A Maxwell. One was in the Book of Mormon, chapter 7, Mormon is at the end of his life and makes a list. Another was in the Don't Miss This Scripture Study book On each occasion, three seasoned people offered insights and various life lessons. I have thought about what I'd say, and this podcast would probably be way too long if I tried to fit them all in! But for today I just want to highlight ONE. Be Grateful. In today's podcast, we will talk about a little mishap I had this week. I fell off my bathroom counter and boy has it wreaked havoc on my back, routine, and schedule! Today I share some thoughts that have been helpful for me to practice gratitude. They are: "It could have been so much worse." "Thank goodness for help." "I can still walk." "This might be a good thing." Listen in today as we discuss these and how we can all apply them in any situation or circumstance. Insights From my Life a BYU Speech by Neal A. A bigtime post that I saw yesterday morning - needed to find that post too as I was once again, struggling a little bit. I need to keep battling with this & Greg Berge (@gb1121) and his posts really do help. One of his latest posts was this gem: ”Why does Gratitude Matter? - Gratitude kills worry. - Gratitude destroys fear. - Gratitude reduces stress. - Gratitude makes you happier. - Gratitude makes you healthier. - Gratitude builds your resilience. - Gratitude changes your state of mind. Be Grateful.” As soon as I remembered this important lesson, I started to have a better outlook on my day. It also reminds me that I need to keep looking for and connecting with great lessons like this, every single day!! I need that constant attitude adjustment as I can't just see something once, and then I don't need anything else for a long time. I need it every single day!! Also saw some news about a longtime friend, who just had a death in his family. Again, plenty of lessons of gratitude for my “problems” as another reminder that ALL OF US, have things we are battling and trying to get through. Thanks for listening. Saw a powerful post and a reminder, exactly when I needed to see it this morning - from Greg Berge - all about the importance of gratitude. “Why is having GRATITUDE so important? - Gratitude kills worry. - Gratitude destroys fear. - Gratitude reduces stress. - Gratitude makes you happier. - Gratitude makes you healthier. - Gratitude builds your resilience. - Gratitude changes your state of mind. Be Grateful.” I woke up this morning in pain as usual (darn arthritis) and I started going down the rabbit hole of feeling down about myself. Well, I knew I had to get my steps in this morning with my coffee and I got to thinking about things. How I can't stay in this dark “room” to start my day off. I started to go down a long list of reasons why I need to be my best (my entire family, my career as an educator & coach, the people in my life, etc.). I started to feel a bit better. Then I saw this post & it really kicked into high gear for me. I need to set up these “triggers” to remind me every day as to what direction I get to choose for how my day will go. It's something that I think we all need. I hope this helps you to have a great day and to get through whatever you need to get through and become better. Thanks for listening. All links - linktr.ee/barbarafaison Week 8 - Be Grateful This is an episode about how I believe being grateful is an attitude and a practice. A few weeks ago I talked about the The 40 day plan my friend, Regenna London created over 16 years ago. It's a journal with questions, reminders and encouragement to focus on what you desire for 40 days. One thing I love about this plan is it gets the momentum going for me and I usually continue beyond the 40 days. It is day 52 of 2024 and I'm still reading, writing & journaling, doing qigong daily and really grateful that I am. Sometimes we need a little boost or encouragement to get started and to keep going. Regenna and I chatted earlier this week and we are both still doing what we started on day 1 of the Forty Day Plan. Yay, us! Please remember to patch yourself on the back! Mom taught me that. I believe gratitude is an attitude and a practice. Most days I wake up with immense gratitude. Grateful for another day to be here. Grateful for good health, my family and loving relationships and much more. This week I restarted a few other practices that I haven't done in a while. Morning pages and EFT- Emotional Freedom Technique also known as tapping. I used to do morning pages back in the last century, lol when I was writing more regularly over 30 years ago. I learned about this practice from Julia Cameron's book, The Artist's Way. My version of morning pages is to set a timer to write for a specific period of time and write out what comes up. I set my timer for five minutes and today what came up was immense gratitude. It was a stream of conscious flow of the things that I am so grateful for in my life. In addition to what I mentioned earlier, a few other things I feel grateful for in this moment: Drinking a hot tonic from my mom‘s china cup Listening to the birds as I journaled at my kitchen table Having practices that sustain me My beautiful home Friends I've known for over three decades An interesting life Breathing through both of my nostrils lol Recognizing that the word evolve has the word love in it Dear friends that keep me smiling and laughing Doing daily writing or journaling feels great right now. I'm telling you, for me, discipline and commitment beat motivation and inspiration every day. I talked about that and the 40 Day Plan in episode six, Be Yourself. I hope you enjoy the Be Grateful excerpt from my book/eBook/audiobook, Why Struggle? Life is too short to wear tight shoes. Practicing gratitude for me is often just saying thank you all day long, silently and aloud. I can feel my body surging with such warm feelings when I do this simple practice. Writing down these gratitude gems was an additional surge of energy that started my day off just right. What do you feel grateful for right now? 215 – Does your heart overflow with gratitude?I've been thinking of everything I'm grateful for. With all the tensions in the world, not to mention the challenges in my own life, I've found that expressing gratitude helps get me refocused on God and brings some peace of mind. Gratitude helps clear the air so my heart can breathe more freely. This week's episode takes a deep dive into some of the many ways people in the Bible express gratitude or encourage others to be grateful.Old Testament:The "thank offering" or "sacrifice of thanksgiving" was one of the first ways the Children of Israel expressed their thanks to GodWhen David brought the Arc of the Covenant back to Jerusalem, he appointed people to collectively praise and thank GodWhen Solomon brought the Arc of the Covenant into the Temple for the first time, he also appointed a group of people to thank God collectivelyJehoshaphat sent people out to sing thanks to God to meet the warring armiesEzra appointed people to collectively thank God when they laid the foundation on which the Temple would be rebuiltNehemiah appointed two whole choirs to thank God in song on the newly built walls of JerusalemPsalms is full of gratitude to GodDon't forget Daniel and Jonah, who thanked God in tough situationsNew TestamentAnna thanked God for letting her see the MessiahJesus gave thanks before he fed the 5,000 and 4,000 peopleJesus gave thanks at the Last Supper, even though he knew he would be betrayed and crucifiedPaul thanked God for so many thingsThe people he was writing toThe fact that he got to serve ChristThat Christ delivered people from their sinsHe encourages us to be grateful for everything in the name of Christ JesusAnd sometimes we just need to thank God for being God.What are some ways you can be more grateful?Mentioned in this episode:Episode 213: How to Be Grateful in Every Situation Episode 111: What Was Jesus Thankful for?Show notes:Read the full transcript and all the Bible quotes: thebiblespeakstoyou.com/215Support the show_________________________James Early, the Jesus Mindset Coach, is a Bible teacher, speaker, and podcaster. Week 47 - What are You Practicing? All the links - linktr.ee/barbarafaison In episode 39 - Gratitude is an Attitude and a Practice - I shared that enhanced optimism, better sleep and lower levels of anxiety and depression are a few of the benefits of practicing gratitude. Did you also know that people who practice gratitude experience less aches and pains? That's a great reason to write, speak or express gratitude regularly. Enjoy this excerpt from my book called, Be Grateful. Be Grateful I say “thank you, God” all day long. I feel so blessed and grateful for my life and the people in my life. Even when things are not as great as I would like them to be, I'm still grateful for I know I have the ability to move forward. Do you have all five senses? BE GRATEFUL. Can you walk? BE GRATEFUL. Are you able to eat? BE GRATEFUL. Do you have shelter? BE GRATEFUL. Do you have clothing for your body? BE GRATEFUL. Can you read? BE GRATEFUL. Can you think and express yourself? BE GRATEFUL. Being grateful has now been scientifically proven to be a stress buster. Grateful people are more optimistic and reap the health benefits of the practice. Cultivate the practice of appreciation and look for what you are learning from your experiences. Simply say out loud throughout the day, “thank you.” Practice: Do you have clothing, food, and shelter? What about sight, touch, smell, taste, hearing? Be grateful if you do. The next time you begin to feel ungrateful, think of all the basic things in life you have to give thanks for. Affirmation: I am grateful and appreciate my life. So, let's practice. Right now I am grateful for a fresh haircut, divine downloads and a visit from a cute stray dog. What are you grateful for at this moment?
