This book follows David, an American expat, in Paris as he explores the freedom Paris offers its inhabitants that don’t exist back in his home country. The narrative mainly focuses on his internal conflict of reckoning with his bisexulaity and his two loves Giovanni (Italian) and Hella (American). Dramatic irony plays a heavy role in the book as the narrative slowly unravels revealing the events leading up to the dramatic ending.

On this episode, Katy represents the Soft-Spoken — or SS’s, as they preferred to be called — and shares a comforting (?) but unlikely JK Rowling theory (in reality she’s just a TERF). Then, Katy dives into her “summary” of James Balwin’s “Giovanni’s Room,” which ends up sounding a lot more like a very dark retelling of a particular animated film about a rat chef... Molly eventually takes the reigns and walks us through what actually happens in the 1956 queer classic and the sisters wrap up by answering two more of your CFLAMA questions (and Katy finally remembers what it’s called!) I hope you’re both staying safe and healthy :) I’m so grateful for all of the Book Riot podcasts for maintaining a sense of normalcy in my current routine. With that said, I’m looking for a recommendation to keep me completely engrossed. The past two weeks have left me stressed and anxious, so a book to distract my thoughts would be amazing. I haven’t had one of those “stay up reading a book until 4AM” nights in YEARS. I really want something to grip my attention from the beginning to the very end. I would prefer something that isn’t super high fantasy, but other than that, I’ll read just about anything! I’m looking forward to your recs! :) -Haley 2. Hi ladies! I hope you two are doing well. My request seems sort of silly and easy, but I trust both of your opinions so much, and wanted to hear what you had to recommend. When I was younger I used to read Literature with a capital L. A lot of classics, and literary fiction, but during college as a double major in Classics and English, I stopped reading literary fiction because I had to read a lot of it for class, and therefore started gravitating more towards fantasy, and sci-fi, and a bit of romance too. Now that my time in college is coming to an end (and I'm stuck at home taking classes remotely because of Covid-19), I want to try my hand at getting back into literary fiction. In the past I've loved A Little Life, The Secret History, The Goldfinch, and The Mothers, to name a few. Books I've read recently and loved were Red White and Royal Blue, everything China Mieville has ever written, The Broken Earth Trilogy, The Daughter of the Forest, Among Others, and Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norell. I feel like I've been so apart from literary fiction for so long I'm not actually sure what stories in the genre I would be interested in anymore. Any suggestions you two could give would be much appreciated. Sorry for the overly long ask, but I thought specificity would be useful. -Mariposa 3.  Hi! Due to the recent quarantines I've had to cancel a couple of my upcoming trips and I'm pretty bummed about it. I was hoping you could recommend some travel-ish books that will make me feel wanderlust even when I'm self quarantining. You guys are awesome, I can't wait to see what you recommend! -Kait 4. TIME SENSITIVE***Hi! I am starting a new book club, and we are wanting to read a historical queer book as our first read ("historical" really means from whenever :) ) Do you have any suggestions? (I already am aware of Tipping the Velvet, The Color Purple, Stone Butch Blues, Fingersmith, Giovanni's Room, A Little Life) Thanks so much in advance. -Monica 5. Hi ladies! Love the podcast, it’s a bright spot of my week. Recently my college shut down for the remainder of the semester due to corona fear, leaving me to take online classes at my parents house, states away from all my friends during my final semester my senior year (looks like we won’t even have a grad ceremony). Needless to say this left me pretty bummed and I don’t have a great relationship with my parents, so being here isn't exactly great for my mental health. Do you guys have any fun books to recommend? I particularly like sci-fi and fantasy (high, urban, etc.). It doesn't necessarily have to be funny, or lighthearted, I more want a book that will engross me and make me not think about my life for a little bit, if that makes any sense. One caveat no romance please. I left for spring break having just started seeing someone and now with school canceled we are states apart and I don’t know if/when we’ll see each other again, so that relationship is basically done. So now the thought of romance makes me really sad. Thank you both in advance! -Anonymous 6. Hi ladies! I am going to Italy late April/early May and was hoping for some book recommendations to get me even more pumped for my trip. We are staying in Rome and the Amalfi Coast. I am open to any suggestions, whether it be fiction (any genre or YA ok too) that take place in these areas or some non-fiction to learn about the history, art, culture, food, etc. Love your show and thanks in advance! :) -Erika 7. Looking for a fantasy novel that feels like Lord of the Rings but has some non heteronormative romance in it. I love fluff romance and don't mind sex scenes as long as there isn't an "eggplant" involved. I haven't read a good fantasy novel since I was a kid and I liked Eragon, Harry Potter, A Series of Unfortunate Events, and Cirque Du Freak. I want something that isn't necessarily YA though as I prefer books geared more towards adults. -Jean (they/them) Books Discussed My Dark Vanessa by Kate Elizabeth Russell (tw: sexual abuse of children) Gideon the Ninth by Tamsyn Muir (tw: harm to children) Girl, Woman, Other by Bernadine Evaristo Disoriental by Négar Djavadi, translated by Tina Kover How to Be a Family by Dan Kois A Small Place by Jamaica Kincaid The Confessions of Frannie Langton by Sara Collins (tw: slavery and associated violence) Orlando by Virginia Woolf A Winter’s Promise by Christelle Dabos, trans by Hildegard Serle Leviathan Wakes by James S.A. Amanda and Jenn discuss naturey spec-fic, New England novels, escapist reads, and more in this week's episode of Get Booked. This episode is sponsored by Book Riot's gift card giveaway and Book Riot Insiders.   Questions   1. I have been listening to your podcast for a long time now and I absolutely love it! I have a request for you. I love Fantasy genre and Sci-Fi (maybe even some post-apocalyptic). My favourite books have been Harry Potter, Lord of the rings, Sword of Truth and The Dresden Files. I am looking for something fresh to read in this genre, with a unique universe, new ideas and nice characters. I know it may sound a bit challenging but I would love to find something to read that is outside the mainstream Fantasy guidelines. Thank you and keep up the good work! --John   2. Hello! Thanks for all the work you put into your great podcast, my booklist has been growing exponentially every since I started following you! I am looking for book suggestions to help me further cope with and accept all the destruction and damage to the natural world that is rampant in human society. I love fiction but also appreciate non fiction. One of my favorite books is Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer so anything like that would be appreciated. I'm also looking for comforting nature focused novels like those by Barbara Kingsolver, and thought provoking dystopia-style books where the natural world is a speculative character of its own like in Jeff Vandermeer's Southern Reach Trilogy. Any suggestions you have would be much appreciated! --Rhiannon   3. Looking for books by June 21. Hello, I'm headed to New England for 2 weeks in June. Would love some books to read while up there on vacation that are set in any of the New England States or about New England and its History. I do love books that give me all the feels and give me an emotional reaction. But I'm open to anything. I love literary fiction, historical fiction, women's lit and narrative non fiction. Some of my favorite books have been Unbroken by Laura Hildebrand, anything by Kristin Hannah, Little Fires Everywhere by Celeste Ng, Trail of Broken Wings (the author escapes me ...but if you haven't go read it)., When Crickets Cry by Charles Martin, The Art of Racing in the Rain by Garth Stein, Giovanni's Room by James Baldwin, and this oldy but Goody The Story of a Bad Boy by Thomas Aldridge (I'm pretty sure the character Sailor Sam is my all time literary character), Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston. Thanks --Shona   4. Hi! I just blazed through Circe and am about half way through Song of Achilles. I have discovered I have a love of Greek mythology retelling. What book / series can you recommend to help me dive into Greek mythology? I prefer longer books so please no short stories (unless it’s a big collection) or graphic novels. Thanks so much! --Jessica   5. Hello! Request date of early September for my cousin's birthday. My cousin is a trans-man currently going through the physical transition. Recently, while discussing books, he lamented the lack of representation he is able to find in books (and other media). When he is able to find it, the stories always end poorly for the character (suicide, violence/abuse, drugs, etc.). He has read a few memoirs, but would really love a novel. Do you know of any that have a trans-man as the main character and a happy ending? Own-voices would be amazing. Thanks! --April   6. Hi! I just joined the insiders and have been hooked on this podcast for months now. I read anything and have been known to choose books by the covers. Something I haven’t really found is a book that includes Foster Families. I don’t shy away from anything. I have been a foster mom for just over a year now, I have two step children and one foster baby right now. So, good and bad are welcome. I would like one of each if possible. I love listening to you, keep up the great work you both are doing! Thank you, --Sherri   7. Hello, lovely ladies! I am graduating THIS WEEK with a Masters in Social Work, and loved (almost) every moment of it, but am ready for some serious escape-from-reality reading now. Based on your podcast I listened to the audio version of Seanan McGuire’s Every Heart a Doorway and LOVED the unique complexity of worlds with differing levels of logic, nonsense, wickedness and virtue as well as the absolute normalization of the whole queer spectrum, dead bodies, and that indescribable feeling of missing a place so badly you can’t go on with your life. I’m utterly, embarrassingly new to the fantasy genre and would love more recs for stories that are dark but in that “it’ll never happen to me or the people I’ll be working with as a social worker” kind of way :). This week on the MashReads Podcast, we read and discuss Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi, with Yaa herself. Homegoing is a novel that follows the family lineage of two half sisters, Effia who is the wife of a British slaver and Esi who is sold into slavery and eventually sent to America. As the story follows each line's family tree, Homegoing offers a brief yet powerful look at history and family, the forces that seek to disrupt them, and the lengths we will go to hold on to them. Then, as always, we close the show with recommendations: Yaa recommends Giovanni's Room by James Baldwin. And she is currently reading Imagine Me Gone by Adam Haslett. Aliza recommends A Very Potter Musical. Peter recommends Sofia Copala's film The Beguiled. MJ recommends rewatching Legally Blonde, an essay called 'Flying Solo' about relationships and heartbreak in the age of Trump, and the New York Times op-ed 'My Gay Agenda.'
