Pulitzer Prize winner Martyna Majok writes the story of high-schoolers B & G in Sanctuary City. As undocumented teens, the two lean on each other. When G gets citizenship and B has to choose to stay in New Jersey or return with his mom to their country of origin, questions of identity, friendship, sacrifice, and love emerge. In Nicola Yoon's New York Times bestseller The Sun is Also a Star, Natasha and Daniel are also from immigrant families—Daniel a first-generation Korean-American and Natasha an undocumented immigrant from Jamaica. This book is magical. It's simultaneously a surprising love story, a philosophical exploration about our universe, and a very real fight to survive another day. Listen to find out why if one story intrigues you, so will the other. Read The Sun Is Also A Star by Nicola Yoon. Purchase the book from your local independent bookstore. Connect with your host! The Sun is Also A Star by Nicola Yoon. "Natasha: I'm a girl who believes in science and facts. Not fate. Not destiny. Or dreams that will never come true. I'm definitely not the kind of girl who meets a cute boy on a crowded New York City street and falls in love with him. Not when my family is twelve hours away from being deported to Jamaica. Falling in love with him won't be my story. Daniel: I've always been the good son, the good student, living up to my parents' high expectations. Never the poet. Or the dreamer. But when I see her, I forget about all that. Something about Natasha makes me think that fate has something much more extraordinary in store—for both of us. The Universe: Every moment in our lives has brought us to this single moment. A million futures lie before us. Which one will come true?"
Katie tells us about the young adult romance novel The Sun is Also a Star by Nicola Yoon, a thought-provoking and beautifully written book that will leave you rooting for teenagers Daniel and Natasha despite the odds that are stacked against them.
A note from Charlotte: May I just apologize for the lack of content we have put out so far. You might have heard that we filmed this at the end of February, but I haven't had time recently to edit the podcast and I thank you for your patience with us as we are just starting out and have problems with audio and saying the word "like" too much. The link for our Goodreads page is below. Feel free to send us a message or recommend a book that you would like for us to review. Thanks for all the support! Our Goodreads page: https://www.goodreads.com/user/show/131634957-all-day-ya The books we mentioned in this podcast are To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, Girl in the Blue Coat by Monica Hesse (which we will be reviewing soon), Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen, The Canterbury Tales by Geoffrey Chaucer, Admission by Julie Buxbaum, Talking as Fast as I Can: Gilmore Girls to Gilmore Girls (and Everything in Between) by Lauren Graham, The Sun is Also A Star by Nicola Yoon, American Street by Ibi Zoboi, and The Distance Between Us by Kasie West.
The Sun is also a Star is a teen drama that is based on a novel by Nicola Yoon that is apparently pretty sick and cool in young adult circles. The film tells the story of Daniel and Natasha, two very pretty, very young adults who fall in love in New York over the space of one day. Daniel is a hopeful romantic that wants to be a poet but his Korean dad (who runs a haircare shop) is forcing him to be a doctor. Natasha thinks love is gross and silly. Natasha's dream is to not be deported back to Jamaica with her family. Two unlikely people fall in love, despite everything working against them. A truly original tale. John Leguizamo plays Jeremy Martinez – an immigration case worker that also interviews potential doctors for Dartmouth university. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
In this episode, the editors discuss the storytelling elements in the teen romantic drama The Sun Is Also a Star with a focus on romantic tension. And they end with some tips for writers on strengthening their query or back cover blurb.

"The sun is also a star", une sortie qui suscite beaucoup d'intérêt 2016, New York. L'autrice Nicola Yoon s'apprête à publier son deuxième roman : "The Sun is Also a Star". The sun is also a star". Perhaps the second time is the charm? After a *not great* experience with Yoon's first book Everything, Everything (see previous episode), Brenna and Joe tackle her most recent text, which balances a timely discussion and racism, immigration and deportation with a falling-in-love-in-one-day perfect date. Brenna is much more in favour of the book, especially Natasha's Jamaican background and Yoon's playful side-story telling. Joe is less enthused with Daniel's Korean storyline, which he argues feels too familiar, as well as the narrative confines of the single day premise. What we can both agree upon is that the film, particularly Tracy Oliver's screenplay, fundamentally misunderstands the book. Despite Russo-Young (previous episode Before I Fall)'s gorgeous lensing of New York, the film proves to be a misfire due to a lack of chemistry between leads Yara Shahidi and Charles Melton, its issues with colourism casting and the fumbling of the book's key Karaoke scene.Wanna connect with the show? This is a book review on the contemporary novel by Nicola Yoon called The Sun Is Also A Star. As always I encourage you to share this podcast with your friends, but I also want to encourage you to go out and support the Black Lives Matter movement. This movement impacts all of us because it is about human rights. It is not a "party agenda" as some news stations will have you believe. That is why it is important to remember to vote in November (if you live in America) and to sign petitions, support black owned business, and (if you can) go out and protest. Below are some links to resources for the BLM movement. https://blacklivesmatter.com/resources/ https://www.change.org/t/black-lives-matter-en-us And as always, thank you to Purple Planet Music for the amazing opening theme song. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/its-a-book-thing/support

The Sun is Also A Star Adaptation Is Missing It's Center On Screen Shortly after The Sun is Also A Star hit theaters, Ro sits down with critic Joi Childs to talk about the film's adaptation and on why the story context should've mattered more in this charming day-in-the-life love story, and how it feels like the screenwriters (and possibly the actors) fell short of the mark when deciding on what angle to take. Joi and Ro both wonder if the uneven ability in the lead actors weighed in on the seeming decision to not spend much time on showing substantive backstory for an entire family or if perhaps Yara's skillset wasn't up to carrying the weight this story needed to be more than a superficial one-and-done romance story. Ro and Joy wonder does how much the seeming maturity of the actor matter should be taken into consideration. The discussion contains a few excerpts from the book which may feel spoiler to some. So, Ro delayed sharing this chat to give folks time to see the film (or read the book) themselves. Both Ro and Joi enjoyed The Sun is Also A Star (beautiful people are never a bad thing) but each wishes that it hadn't fallen so far short of what it could've been with just a bit more care. There aren't any superhero movies coming out and Memorial Day isn't until next weekend so we've got a grabbag of movies to talk about this week. We start with "The Sun is Also a Star." It's a romance set very much in the present day. It's so timely in fact that one of the characters is about to get deported. And from a romance we go to "Extremely Wicked Shocking Evil and Vile" which is about famed serial killer Ted Bundy and stars Zach Efron. Then Bill McCuddy talks about the Liam Neeson black comedy/action thriller "Cold Pursuit" which is now available on on demand. And to switch gears totally Neil tells us about attending the ABC Upfront. Don't worry, Neil will explain what an "upfront" is if you don't know already. So this week it's an odd assemblage of stuff, and come to think of it, so are we.

Just like Keanu Reeves, we’re unstoppable here at the Breakfast All Day Podcast. Matt, Alonso and Christy review the completely gnarly action thriller “John Wick: Chapter 3 — Parabellum”; the swoony YA romance “The Sun Is Also a Star”; “The Souvenir,” an exquisitely acted British drama; and “Charlie Says,” the story of the Manson family from the perspective of his “girls.” And if you head on over to our Patreon, you can hear us talk about the penultimate “Game of Thrones” episode with Ben and say farewell to some Hollywood legends, including Doris Day and Tim Conway.

No one writes a teen love story quite like Nicola Yoon. Before being swept away by Natasha and Daniel on the big screen in THE SUN IS ALSO A STAR, listen as Bahni Turpin, Raymond Lee, and Dominic Hoffman narrate this story of a whirlwind one-day romance set in New York City. Natasha is desperate to keep her family from being deported back to Jamaica when she meets Daniel on his way for a college interview — one he has no interest in actually doing. Natasha and Daniel’s relationship builds as the hours tick closer and closer to deportation. You won’t be able to put this audiobook down. Published by Listening Library. A group of local women just started a new book club and the idea is that each month the host will pick a book and they’ll also select a recipe to make that goes with the theme of the book and the other members will bring complimentary sides and of course wine. When it’s my turn to pick a title I want to pick a book that would be fun but also easy to find a main dish to pair with it. It would be great if the book could have a lot of good in it. Please nothing violent, dark or steamy. Thanks! -Sarah 2. Hello! Long time listener and lover of your show and bookriot! My friend is getting to reading and she asked if I knew any good books about sharks. She throws a huge shark week party. she's wants her book club pick in June to be in theme. Nonfiction and fiction are both welcome. Thank you! -Purplehairedbooknerd 3. My best friend is getting her PhD in climate science and generally has her head buried in academic journals. However, she has a soft spot for Harry Styles and really likes books about famous musicians/actors/princes meeting and falling in love with "normal" girls. She's read Public Relations (loved it), Backstage Pass (not so much), and The Unidentified Redhead series (liked them). Do you have any other recommendations for her birthday? Julie 4. I love the movie The Fifth Element and I'd love to read books with that same feel. I read over 100 books a year from all genres so I would be really interested to see if you pick something completely new to me. If you want to see what else I've read I'm Shelbycat on goodreads. Thank you! -Sarah 5. I love your show. I listen to all the current episodes and am going through the episodes I missed before I found it. My request is for a book telling the exact same story but from different points of view, so that everything you thought changes. I have read Gone Girl and The Summer House, but any other ones you can come up with would be great!! Thanks! Cindi 6. The past year I’ve been dealing with a bad relapse of my depression and I’ve tried reading a lot of self-help, inspirational, and soul searching books but my problem is that so many of them are TOO happy for me that I can’t relate enough. I did really love Hyperbole and a Half but I would like something a little deeper. Like a grumpy cat person living their best life just making it through. -Stephanie 7. I am starting an audiobook club at the library I work at and need some help planning out what to read the first year. I want of mix of fiction (mystery, SFF, thriller, etc.), non-fiction, adult, YA, and even Juvenile, but with a focus on characters and authors that are LGBTQ+, #ownvoices, or POC. Oh, and nothing longer than 8 hrs, please (I'm afraid I'll scare them away if I do anything longer at first). Thanks for always recommending amazing books on the podcast! Nicola Yoon, the #1 New York Times Bestselling author of two books Everything Everything and The Sun is Also a Star, is this week's featured guest. Everything Everything has been adapted into a movie, which is in theaters right now, and I had a chance to talk to Nicola about the book and the movie at the Mom 2.0 Summit. One of the things I thought was so interesting about Everything Everything is that even though it is a Young Adult book, it was inspired by a very common feeling parents have after having a baby. Nicola shares what that feeling was in our conversation. We also talk about the movie reflecting the book and about her new book The Sun is Also a Star, which was influenced by her Jamaican roots.
We add a new segment in which we respond to random comments Nate finds on the Internet, Nathan argues that the Weeknd is not as forlorn as Kurt Cobain, and we discuss Nicola Yoon's The Sun is Also a Star. Lindsey suggests A.S. King's Ask the Passengers and Please Ignore Vera Dietz. Katie suggests Eleanor & Park by Rainbow Rowell & The Fault in Our Stars by John Green. Kim suggests Something in Between by Melissa de la Cruz Nick and Nora's Infinite Playlist and Dash & Lily's Book of Dares by David Levithan and Rachel Cohn. Nathan also puts in a plug (sort of) for Nick and Nora. Nate suggests The Boy in the Black Suit by Jason Reynolds. Ca$h Money suggests Before Sunrise.
