In the introduction of Liz Norell's new book, The Present Professor: Authenticity and Transformational Teaching (2024), she opens with two statements: “When you cannot be present, you cannot teach effectively” and “What's good for students is good for us, too.” In this episode, Dr. Norell elaborates on these statements, and examines the importance of presence and authenticity in teaching and learning for both instructors and students. Dr. Norell, who serves as Associate Director of Instructional Support in the Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning at the University of Mississippi, also shares tools for cultivating self-knowledge, and discusses how they can positively impact teaching. This will be the last episode of Season 9 of Dead Ideas in Teaching and Learning. We will be back in spring 2025 with Season 10. Thank you for listening!

Welcome to Episode 130 of the Think UDL podcast: Virtual Gathering, Real Inclusion with Cait Kirby and Liz Norell. Cait Kirby is the founding Associate Director of the Williams College Center for Teaching, where she primarily engages with faculty around exploring and celebrating teaching practices and opportunities. Cait spends her time tweeting about disability, pedagogy, and games. She enjoys knitting, reading, and making good trouble. Liz Norell is an associate director of instructional support at the Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning at the University of Mississippi, where she supports faculty who want to improve their teaching. Liz is also dedicated to spreading greater awareness of neurodivergence in and out of the classroom, reads voraciously, and loves a good road trip. Drs. Cait Kirby and Liz Norrell were two of the organizers of the June 2024 virtual conference Making Change,Taking Space: A Call to Gather (virtually). The first time conference was organized entirely by volunteers primarily in the North American higher education space as a FREE professional development opportunity for anyone around the world who would like to participate in three days of workshops, lighting talks, and structured social gatherings. I was lucky enough to be able to attend this virtual conference and was really impressed with the thoughtful design that the organizers collectively created, so I asked Cait and Liz to join me to discuss those decisions and how it all came about. You'll also be able to see a lot more information about this virtual gathering in the resources section of the ThinkUDL.org website for this episode and find contact information for the group as well as Cait and Liz, who are only two of the many volunteers who put together this exceptionally well-designed, inclusive, thoughtfully paced and incredibly generative space. In today's conversation, we will discuss how and why this virtual conference came into being, how and why accessibility was baked into every design and planning choice, what lessons were learned after this inaugural and hopefully annual conference and what is on the horizon for any folks who may have missed out and want to join along in this community. Perhaps you will find some new ideas to put into practice in your spaces that will radically include your learners and/or participants, too.

Dr. Liz Norell is the Associate Director of Instructional Support at the Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning at the University of Mississippi, also known as Ole Miss. In this conversation, Liz and I discuss several important UDL ideas including reflection and how to incorporate that into our classes and how beneficial it is for our own learning. We also discuss how to create psychological safety even within a course that could have many “hot-button” type issues, how to create choice and flexibility in your course, and what to do if there are too many choices for some students. We also discuss how students can essentially choose their own grade for a course based on their interests and efforts. Tune in for a very enlightening conversation with so many great ideas about how to infuse your course with UDL principles.
It takes our sun 220 million years to orbit around the middle of our home galaxy. But that kind of timescale can be difficult to picture. So, using the International Stratigraphy Chart as a guidance for what different time periods mean in terms of millions of years, let's zoom out to the scale of a galactic year and see what happened in Earth's prehistory one cycle ago, two and so on. Dive into an episode focused on emotional intelligence, the importance of building cohesive teams at work, and learn different strategies to explore the ways we communicate with others. Let's see where Happenstance takes us...Meet Norell:Building my brand under ProLeadership has been an honor and a pleasure. It brings me great joy to be able to provide services for our communities that not only supports individuals at a professional level, but also at a personal level. Like all parts of our dynamic, interconnected ecosystem, our vocation is unequivocally tied to our sense of self and ultimately our mental health. My journey as a psychologist catapulted when I was introduced to Organisational Psychology, a branch of psychology that focuses on Human Behaviour in the Workplace. It dawned on me that most people spend a majority of their waking life within the workplace and that this environment must be protected to sustain mentally healthy and functional societies. I instantaneously fell in love and made it my life mission to support leaders and their teams createthe "place I want to be" type workspaces that fulfill, inspire and drive productivity.Today my focus is working with highly technical professionals who find themselves having to work with peers, clients, stakeholders and lead teams of people on a daily basis. These professionals are usually high performing in their area of technical expertise. They prefer their own company over the company of others. Gatherings and social events can drain their batteries. They usually are in executive leadership roles because they are the CEO, Founder and/or part of the Executive Leadership team, and they are pivotal to the business they are in. I am able to equip these leaders with strategies to identify and develop their executive leadership team, and tap into their own strengths and abilities to uplift their own leadership capability.Connect with Norell:norell@proleadership.com.auLinkedInInstagramLet's Connect:@HappenstanceThePodcast@CareerCoachCassie
When journalists write books, how do they balance the potentially tricky relationship between weaving a compelling narrative and sticking to the facts? What's the role of storytelling in reportage? And what are the ethics of reporting on other peoples' lived experiences? This month our guest is Tania Branigan, foreign leader writer at The Guardian and author of Red Memory: Living, Remembering and Forgetting China's Cultural Revolution. Tania was a correspondent in China for seven years, and Red Memory is about the Cultural Revolution, a decade of upheaval, purging and torture that began under Chairman Mao in 1966. Crucially, it's also about the act of both remembering and forgetting this period, and the role the Chinese government and people have played in that process. Listen in for our chat with Tania, an exploration of journalism in literature and all the usual recommendations. In this episode, we're going to talk about a Twitter thread that went viral. Dr. Liz Norell's thread on her night class now has more than 800,000 views. On it, Norell talks about ice breakers, her liquid syllabus, ungrading, a "punchy" Word document syllabus she created the night before, and communicating the message of care and belonging. When it comes to ungrading, Norell tells students that learning is change happening in their minds, something that you can't always see. "And so my hope is that by the end of the semester...students really embrace ungrading, because I find, contrary to my own expectations, they do more work because they care, because they're interested, and they're not doing it for a grade." Additionally, Norell explains that a delightful consequence of ungrading is that students learn how to self-advocate and take ownership of the work they've done. From ungrading to a liquid syllabus to bringing snacks to class, Norell's main goal is communicating a message of care and belonging to every person in the classroom. Medium, Healer, Inspirational Speaker and Author, Ali Norell... In July 2014, Ali Norell's four-month-old daughter Romy died, challenging Ali's belief system in the strongest way possible. Her book, The Truth Inside documents how Ali received communication from her daughter in spirit in a variety of ways and how this eventually helped her to process her grief and uncover her own life purpose. Despite having one foot firmly in the ‘Other', Ali believes in demystifying spiritualism and taking it out of the shadows and into public awareness to aid those who grieve and offer hope to all that death is a transition, rather than an end. Another *Perfume Room Required Listening* This week's guest has not only authored Perfumed Legends (vol I and II), he IS one. I am joined by the person responsible for the taxonomy of fragrance as we know it — Founder of Fragrances of the World, Inventor of the Fragrance Wheel(!) — Michael Edwards. While Michael and I discuss seminal scents that have shaped the industry, we cannot do so without acknowledging how Michael has shaped the industry. Michael took something subjective and nebulous and replaced it with universal and empirical language. We discuss everything from The Fragrance Landscape B.C. and A.C. — that is, before Charlie and after Charlie, fragrance stews (AKA unclassifiable scents), the necessary formal reclassification of the o-word to amber (and how it's been received), and perhaps one of the biggest bombshells of our conversation: that without discounted fragrances there would be no niche. And of course, Michael walks us through the different families and sub-families of the fragrance wheel — describing how they differ from and relate to one another. September 29, 1984. Chicago, Illinois. 23-month old Deborah Sanders is taken from her mother, Norell Sanders, who claims she was violently attacked by the child's estranged father, Odell Sheppard, before Deborah was abducted. Nearly one year later, Odell is tracked down and arrested, but he no longer has Deborah with him and maintains that he returned her to Norell. After serving a prison sentence for child abduction, Odell winds up being sent to jail for contempt of court after he refuses to produce Deborah. Even though is never charged with a crime or put on trial, Odell remains incarcerated for over ten years before he is released and he never reveals what actually happened to his daughter. Today we are celebrating the Season One finale of the podcast with a special guest and a beautiful conversation weaving fiction, cunning, and ethics all into one pot and serving it up to you all as a hearty stew to warm the soul. This week I am welcoming Dr. Alexander Cummins, contemporary cunning man and historian, onto the podcast where we chat a bit about what one can learn about magic and ethics from reading the outstanding work of fiction Johnathan Strange and Mr. Norell by Susanna Clarke. Al provides great insight and wisdom to the unpacking of this tale, by bringing his knowledge and understanding of the dead (folk necromancy), geomancy, and grimoire traditions to the table. This conversation does a lovely job on talking about so many things, like ravens, angelic language, melancholia, and doorways, but still centers on building an underlying awareness of respect, responsibility, and mutual understanding with ourselves and the world we all share. What can we learn about Kingship from the study of ravens? What does the history of treasure hunting teach us about magicians and cunning people of yore? How can a study of the four humors inform a more holistic approach to the care of self and others? All this and more, on today's episode of SaturnVox. To find more from Dr. Alexander Cummins, please check out and follow him on Instagram here. His published works and contributions to collections by Three Hands Press, Revelore Press, Hadean Press and Scarlet Imprint. He is a frequent speaker on the international circuit, co-hosts the podcast Radio Free Golgotha, and is a founding editor of Revelore Press' Folk Necromancy in Transmission series. Artist, poet, and activist Dougie Padilla recommends a visit to ArtReach St. Croix in Stillwater to see the exhibit “Jim Denomie, Sweet Dreams,” which runs through May 7. Denomie passed away March 1. Padilla, his longtime friend, said Denomie was a “truly brilliant painter” and “a sweet and gentle man, a blessing to many in many different communities.” “Jim was also the master of his own style of portraiture, and of what can only be called Dreamworld painting. With his own unique palette of blues and purples, pinks and oranges, greens and golds, Jim told stories that came out of some deep underground stream from far down inside his psyche, in the psyche of his Ojibwe ancestors,” Padilla said. “It penetrates the heart softly, even while shaking the very ground beneath our feet.” The show in Stillwater includes portraits and character studies. Denomie painted figures with antlers and rabbit ears, riding on horseback. “Are they leaving this world headed for the next? Are they already in the next world looking back, waiting for us? Named almost a year ago, this exhibit “Sweet Dreams” not only foreshadows Jim's leaving us here on this troubled Earth. It takes us along with him for the first mile or two of his ride home,” Padilla added. Eric Heukeshoven, a jazz musician and composer who teaches at St. Mary's University, plans to drive from Winona to Rochester to attend “A Tribute to John Paulson: Jazz at 70.” Paulson plays saxophone and flute, and he'll perform original compositions and jazz standards. The rest of the quintet has musicians drawn from Rochester, Winona, and environs: Cliff Jack on guitar, Larry Price on piano, Miles Johnston on drums, and Robert S. P. Gardner on bass. The Rochester Chamber Music Society event is Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at Christ United Methodist Church in Rochester. Masks are optional, and the show is free. Don't see video? Click here: Musician Keith Nystrom of Ham Lake says he was “blown away” by Minneapolis musician Jesse Norell's new concept album, “Aorta Borealis.” Norell's daughter Alyssa was born with Trisomy 21, also called Down's Syndrome, as well as a serious heart defect. The album describes learning the diagnosis, the darkness and uncertainty of the heart surgeries and, ultimately, the love and joy of family. Alyssa is now 6. Don't see video? Click here: “Jesse has a real knack for doing very complicated things, but doing them in such the right way, that you don't really notice how complex they are,” said Nystrom. Jesse Norell has an album release show on Friday with guests Ben Noble and Chris Mason at the Parkway Theater in Minneapolis. Doors open at 7 p.m. Music starts at 8 p.m.
On this special episode, Trevor and Shane sit down with musician Jesse Norell to discuss the first music he has written in over 15 years, a concept album about the birth and subsequent medical challenges facing his now 6 year old daughter Alyssa. On the day of her birth, Jesse found out in the same moment that Alyssa both had Down syndrome and holes in her heart that would require open heart surgery...one at five months old and another two years later. And yet this album is ultimately one of joy and self-discovery. It's about a family who found themselves to be the lucky ones. It's about a father who found his darkness turn to light. But mostly It's about a little girl who found she can make anyone change course. On this episode of Enneagram+Yoga, Kat & Christy share the second half of their interview with Liz Norell, Enneagram 2. In this episode, Liz talks about all 9 numbers and how the Enneagram informs her teaching! Every episode ends with a meditation. Liz is a political scientist/professor, yoga teacher and life coach. She sees the world through those complementary lenses, focused on building greater understanding and empathy across differences to make our lives and the world less fraught. In her academic work, she tries to help students see how and why different people come to different conclusions on political issues. When she's not doing those things, she's probably sitting in a comfy chair with a book, listening to her two dogs snoring nearby. Or when a global pandemic isn't raging, perhaps on a road trip. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/christy001/support

It'll make sense if you make it to the end. Of the podcast. What did you think I was referring to? Anyhow, we're talking about Susanna Clarke's "Jonathan Strange and Mr Norell." Yes, I left the period out of the Mr because that's how the Brits do it. If you're mad about it, take it up with the queen.

Mothers day is just a few days away, and I wanted to share 4 chapters of my devotional, True North (a devotional for the real life me) read by me on the podcast! I wrote this 24 day devotional for all the moms out there raising little humans and following Jesus. If you want to dig into this devotional in more depth and read the other 20 days not shared in this series, you can purchase true North on amazon! -About True North- Welcome to motherhood! It's one big journey full of beauty and mess, and even through the late nights and spilled milk, God has placed destiny and purpose in the middle of it all. We were never created to just grit our teeth and “get through” the stages of motherhood. We were intended to experience abundant life, purpose, and destiny right where we are, right now. As we embark on this journey we must set our eyes on Jesus, the one who points us to the Father. Like a compass that always points us to true north, Jesus is our True north who leads us in all seasons, including motherhood. Jesus is calling you to follow Him as He navigates you through this adventure, pointing you always to the Father. Are you ready to walk in motherhood with purpose and calling? Are you ready to discover a relationship with your heavenly Father, and to find your true identity and purpose in the here and now? This 24 day devotional is for you mama, get ready to follow Jesus, our True North on this journey of motherhood. https://www.amazon.com/True-North-Devotional-Real-Life/dp/0996521593/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=true+north+lexi+norell&qid=1620336156&sr=8-1

In this episode I brought in my husband and best friend, Josh! We asked you what questions you had about marriage and you all responded with LOTS of questions about sex. Sex after having babies can be a rocky road to navigate. We hope that through our honest conversation about our journey and what we have learned, we can offer you some tools and encouragement for building a marriage full of intimacy. Marriage takes work, intentionality, and good communication, but when we are striving for intimacy as a whole, we will see a thriving marriage!
