Give Way The Musical: Dave Armstrong and Bronwyn Turei on the latest play to hit Circa Theatre

It's an unusual topic to base a musical on; the change of a road rule. But that's exactly what Give Way The Musical does, putting a satirical spin on the 2012 change to the 'give way' law. The story follows idealistic Sophie who, wanting to make the world a better place, joins the Ministry of Transport. She seizes on fixing New Zealand's 'give way' rule, but not everyone's keenon a change. A protest movement gathers, the sides go to war, and dirty tactics begin. The musical is produced by renowned New Zealand playwright Dave Armstrong, and stars Bronwyn Turei, as seen in Go Girls and The Brokenwood Mysteries, who also took out Actor of the Year at last year's Wellington Theatre Awards. Dave and Bronwyn joined Nick Mills to discuss the performance, opening at Circa Theatre this week and running until May 24. LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Showy Ovaries with Penny Ashton. A Menopause Podcast.

Send us a textWellington Theatre's 2024 Co-Actor of the year Bronwyn Turei (Ngāti Porou) drops into Penny's house to discuss all things fleshy. From being head girl at Gisborne Girls, to dealing with a lot of intense trauma as a teenager, to heading to London's Globe theatre to becoming a constantly jobbing professional actress, she and Penny covered how her body rode this rollercoaster. She talked of hitting the giddy heights of fame aged 24 when cast in the TV show Go Girls, of leaning into her "curvy" characters storylines despite how some of them felt, of how totally adorable her child is, (despite how traumatic her birth was) and how she once went on a blind date to Shanghai. Penny also thanked her being being a superstar in Penny's directorial debut with Sense & Sensibility where she was part of a stellar cast, and they laughed about how Bronwyn's toddler wormed her way into Penny's cold dead non maternal heart. CONTENT WARNING: Sexual assault, suicide ideation, Mental Illness. Photo Credit: Roc Torio Book for Give Way here: https://nz.patronbase.com/_Circa/Productions/2509/PerformancesPenny's Shows Book for Austen Found here: https://www.qtheatre.co.nz/shows/austen-found Book for The Tempestuous in New Plymouth here: https://www.iticket.co.nz/events/2025/may/the-tempestuousBook for Stratford here: https://www.eventbrite.co.nz/e/olive-copperbottom-a-dickensian-tale-of-love-gin-and-the-pox-tickets-1243841095199Book for Tasmania here: https://events.humanitix.com/promise-and-promiscuity-a-new-musical-by-jane-austen-and-penny-ashtonBook for Melbourne here: https://chapeloffchapel.com.au/show/promise-promiscuity/Book for Newcastle here: https://www.trybooking.com/events/landing/1342004Book for Sydney here: https://events.humanitix.com/promise-and-promiscuity-a-new-musical-by-jane-austen-and-penny-ashton-qvacnk7sBook for Canberra here: https://www.thestreet.org.au/shows/promise-and-promiscuitySupport the show

Alright, Stoners—the girlies are girlin' today! Starting off hot with some Julia Roberts love, their favorite Nashville spots, and a quick life update. Oh, and their longtime friend Nada Taha is here! Radio host, creative director, and all-around badass, Nada opens up about her journey in the country music industry, touching on the challenges of diversity in a scene still dominated by white men. The trio dives into the struggles of being women in a male-dominated world, imposter syndrome, emotional intelligence, and the highs and lows of chasing big dreams. Tish takes a moment to reflect on her personal growth, from being a mom in Eastern Kentucky to becoming Miley's manager in Los Angeles. She talks about overcoming doubt, finding her strength, and ultimately finding her voice.  The episode takes a lighter turn when Nada shares her experience adjusting to country life and learning about the wild world of animals in Tennessee. And then, Nada provides some comedic relief by sharing the hilarious story of totally botching her first time meeting the GOAT of country music, Shania Twain.  Get ready for a mix of therapy and comedy—it's a good time!  Don't forget to rate, review, and follow the show! Happy Spooky Wednesday, Folks! Kala's got two locations for you this week, which are often discussed at the same time. The Tennessee State Prison and the Brushy Mountain State Penitentiary are located about an hour and a half away from each other, and both are plagued by paranormal activity brought on by years of overcrowding, violence, and general ill-treatment. While the TSP was basically demolished by a tornado in 2020, Brushy is still available for tours. Will you encounter the ghost who is still having nicotine cravings, or try to escape the heat with the cold spots in the chapel? And Brittany tells us about the badass, Giulia Tofana. This woman continued the work of her mother Thofania d'Adamo, who created the elixir known as Aqua Tofana. Through the 17th-century whisper network, this poison saved women from abusive arranged marriages for decades. While we would never condone this activity today, the women of this era didn't seem to have any other choice. And it would seem that Giulia Tofana was a hero to more people than we can count. If you or someone you know is in an abusive relationship, please don't hesitate to call the National Domestic Violence Hotline. They have folks who can talk to you 24/7 in English, Spanish, and 200+ additional languages through interpretation services Call 800-799-7233 or text 88788 Or visit their website at www.thehotline.org Editor's Note: Women were allowed to apply for credit cards independently in 1974, after the passage of the Equal Credit Opportunity Act (ECOA). Before the ECOA, banks could refuse to issue credit cards to women or require their husbands to co-sign for them.

In Between Truth and Time: A History of Soviet Central Television (Yale University Press, 2016), Christine E. Evans reveals that Soviet television in the Brezhnev era was anything but boring. Whether producing music shows such as Little Blue Flame, game shows like Let's Go Girls or dramatic mini-series, the creators of Soviet programming in the 1950s through 1970s sought to produce television that was festive. Evans demonstrates that television programmers conducted audience research and audience voting as they attempted to meet Soviet citizens' expectations and hold their interest. Rather than stagnating, the producers and filmmakers experimented with multiple forms, in particular in presenting the news. In this interview, Christine Evans discusses her thoroughly researched and entertaining study, and what we can learn about Soviet society in the Brezhnev era through the television it created and watched.
