STUPID SEXY KORBY. Spock and Dr. Korby must fight through a mass delusion foisted on the Enterprise crew by Trelane, who it turns out is a member of the Q Continuum. Bryan & Kristen discuss the worst weddings they've attended and argue about the possibility that this episode was based on the Lindsay Lohan movie "Irish Wish." The grades begin at (25:03). Tread Perilously begins its annual Star Trek month with an episode of the original series called "Catspaw." When a landing party including Mr. Scott and Mr. Sulu is overdue, Captain Kirk meets the one person to come back in the transporter bay only for the red shirt to die moments later. Soon, Kirk, Spock, and Bones beam down to determine what's going on as the sensors claim there is no life on the surface. Soon, the trio encounter their missing crewmates, who have been hypnotized by aliens with amazing god-like powers. Will Kirk be able to use his wits and raw animal magnetism to confuse and defeat his opponents? Erik and Justin zero in on William Shatner's seeming oversight of the episode. Guest characters Korob and Sylvia are examined for their potential as Q Continuum characters. Sci-fi nomenclature gets a moment to shine. James Doohan gets his props for making Scotty's admiration of Kirk so convincing. Shatner's mother also makes another appearance thanks to the actor choosing a curious way to say a certain word. McCoy's anti-Vulcan rhetoric gets examined. Wahl's Herring Candy reappears. Checkov's hair provokes comments. Justin tries to figure out why Robert Bloch turned in such a weak script. Lot of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds talk occurs and Spock somehow joins the commentary.
It's the season 10 finale! How in the name of the Q Continuum have we managed to do this for almost ten years? Largely thanks to you, honestly. Without your support, whether its been generously donating your own hard-earned cash or furiously working to submit your movie fixes every two weeks, this show wouldn't exist without you. So, as always, thank you so much! Now, sit back and enjoy us needlessly picking apart your childhood's favourite gang of puppets. Remember, you support this nonsense.
The extraordinary powers of the Q Continuum defy comprehension: instant teleportation across infinite distances, manipulation of time and space, creation and destruction at will. Yet beneath Q's flamboyant persona and apparent disdain for "lesser beings" lies a complex relationship with humanity. While introducing himself as judge, jury, and potential executioner of our species, his actions reveal a different story.

This week, we're joined by Melvin Peña for a day trip to the Thames Frost Fair in 1814, expecting a jolly afternoon of daydrinking, sword swallowers and juicy sheep hearts, only to find ourselves tied to a bomb and engaged in an intriguing discussion about race, class, death and the ethics of killing. It's Thin Ice. Notes and links Once again, Friend from the Future was a promotional short designed to introduce Bill Potts. Nathan makes fun of the fact that at the end of the short, the on-screen caption reads Introducing Pearl Mackie asBill. You can see the entire short, including that unfortunate typo, here. Like Martha before her and Ruby after her, Bill is concerned that treading on a butterfly in the past will change the present in terrible ways. That concern comes from Ray Bradbury's 1952 short story A Sound of Thunder, which you should really just go off and read right now. In Bong Joon-ho's post-apocalyptic film Snowpiercer (2013), the poor people who live in the back of the train are fed on glistening black protein bars, which we discover are made from ground-up cockroaches. Flight Through Entirety only occasionally advocates for political violence (see Episode 182: The Icy Moral High Ground), but this week we are pleased to bring you this clip of neo-Nazi Richard Spencer being punched in the head during an interview on ABC-TV in January 2017. Melvin alludes to the Slave Compensation Act 1837, which authorised the payment of about £20 million in compensation to slave owners in the British colonies. This sum was finally paid off when the British Government restructured its debt in 2015. (The people who had been enslaved didn't receive any compensation, of course.) Follow us Nathan is on Bluesky at @nathanbottomley.bsky.social, Todd is on X at @toddbeilby, and here's Melvin's profile on about.me. The Flight Through Entirety theme was arranged by Cameron Lam. You can follow Flight Through Entirety on Mastodon and Bluesky, as well as on X and Facebook. Our website is at flightthroughentirety.com. Please consider rating or reviewing us on Apple Podcasts, or we won't tell you what's in those fish pies that you're so looking forward to for dinner this evening. And more You can find links to all of the podcasts we're involved in on our podcasts page. But here's a summary of where we're up to right now. 500 Year Diary is our latest new Doctor Who podcast, going back through the history of the show and examining new themes and ideas. It's first season came out early this year, under the title New Beginnings. Check it out. It will be back for a second season early in 2025. The Second Great and Bountiful Human Empire has broadcast our hot takes on every new episode of Doctor Who since November last year, and it will be back again in 2025 for Season 2. Brendan and Bjay's gaming poscast is called The Bjay BJ Game Show. In the most recent episode, they discuss The Talos Principle (2014), a puzzle-based game with a sentient robot protagonist, which raises questions about identity, consciousness and religion. Brendan, Richard and Steven have released another episode of their Avengers podcast The Three Handed Game. It's the third episode of their triptych The Cool War, covering an early Season 2 episode called The Decapod, featuring Julie Stevens as Venus Smith. And finally there's our Star Trek commentary podcast, Untitled Star Trek Project, featuring Nathan and friend-of-the-podcast Joe Ford. Last week, they dropped in on the Q Continuum in an episode of Star Trek: Voyager called Death Wish.
Someone's joined the Q Continuum (the TNC Patreon level - it's possible it also gains you access to the actual Q Continuum, we just can't promise)! Time to discuss! Meanwhile, Garak goes head-to-head with Dukat, Quark and Odo spend some alone time, and Jake, Ben, and O'Brien clamber around some ducts. But does this add up to Andy and Matt thinking the episode is good or bad? And can it be bad when it may have the funniest moment in all of Star Trek??[Episode discussion begins around 1:37 - LOOK, THE Q CONTINUUM?! WE HAD TO DOWNLOAD]
The return of Lohn JeDancie as the inimitable Q! This time, he's here to test an intern, but not like that. Well, kinda like that actually in that one scene. Olivia D'Abo, the older sister from Wonder Years fame, does a bangup job as a Q spawn left orphaned on Earth after a freak tornado accident in 24th Century Topeka. It seems the Q Continuum didn't like it when her parents quit the firm and our Q was sent to investigate her powers. Which are mostly puppy-based until he trains her up in an omnipotent game of hide-and-seek and messes up Dr. Crusher's experiment. The relationship between Crusher and Ms. Amanda Rogers is a high point of the episode, and Q is much more believable as a villain. Erik hosts this one and edited it all by himself! Welcome to episode 238 of the Cloud Pod Podcast - where the forecast is always cloudy! This week we're bringing you a preview of Amazon re:Invent 2023. We're talking all things AWS, Bedrock, Q, and frugal architecture, and - you guessed it - AI. Titles we almost went with this week:
KILL ALL MEN? That's the tantalizing hook for the latest episode in our Trials of Season Two theme month and guest co-hosts Kat Spada of Feminist Frequency Radio and artist Ethan Harper can't help but think what might've been. Instead, we get an episode about a member of the Q Continuum who wants to die. The only thing stopping him is another member of the Q Continuum -- John de Lancie! Can he convince Captain Janeway to rule in his favor and sentence a wayward Q to an eternity trapped inside a comet or will she grant Death Wish Q asylum so that he can become mortal as a means of ending his own life. Oh -- and there's a surprise cameo by William T. Riker. The grades start at (25:33). Check out Kat's Voyager-themed manicure here. If you're enjoying the show, consider rating and reviewing us. This is: AI #39: The Week of OpenAI, published by Zvi on November 23, 2023 on LessWrong. The board firing Sam Altman, then reinstating him, dominated everything else this week. David Attenborough narrates your life how-to guide, using Eleven Labs and GPT-4V. Code here. Good pick. Not my top favorite, but very good pick. Another good pick, Larry David as productivity coach. Language Models Don't Offer Mundane Utility Oh no. Kai Greshake: PSA: The US Military is actively testing and deploying LLMs to the battlefield. I think these systems are likely to be vulnerable to indirect prompt injection by adversaries. I'll lay out the story in this thread. This is http://Scale.ai's Donovan model. Basically, they let an LLM see and search through all of your military data (assets and threat intelligence) and then it tells you what you should do.. Now, it turns out to be really useful if you let the model see news and public information as well. This is called open-source intelligence or OSINT. In this screenshot, you can see them load "news and press reports" from the target area that the *adversary* can publish! We've shown many times that if an attacker can inject text into your model, you get to "reprogram" it with natural language. Imagine hiding & manipulating information that is presented to the operators and then having your little adversarial minion tell them where to strike. … Unfortunately the goal here is to shorten the time to a decision, so cross-checking everything is impossible, and they are not afraid to talk about the intentions. There will be a "human in the loop"...

The SyFy Sistas look at the special relationship Captain Jean-Luc Picard maintains with three amazing Black women; Guinan, the El-Aurian bartender from his days on the Enterprise-D, Lily Sloane from his temporal incursion in the film Star Trek: First Contact (1996), and Raffaela (Raffi) Musiker, XO during his command of the Romulan evacuation and later his quest companion in the series Picard. These three women have the ear of the Captain of the Enterprise D and E, the flagship of the Federation fleet, the Chief Contact with the Q Continuum, the Arbiter of Succession for the Klingon Empire, the Savior of Earth from the Borg Invasion, the face of the United Federation of Planets, and a few other things that only Yvette calls him. Our discussion ranges from their conversational styles to our appreciation of the TWA over ugly-ass wigs. But wait until you hear what Fran saw coming that no other SyFy Sista did.
