Low Gap is primed to take the Country Music world by storm. Brothers Gus and Phin John-son are relatively young musicians but are already making an impact with their authentic writing and catchy tunes. With roots in Eastern Kentucky and Southeastern Ohio, Gus and Phin grew up listening to Bluegrass and Americana music. That—combined with Folk, Coun-try, and Classic and Southern Rock—creates the unique tone that has become the duo's sig-nature sound. Gus wrote his first song at 13 years old, and only months later wrote “Mock-ingbird,” their biggest hit, which was ranked second on Grady Smith's list of “non-hit sin-gles” for 2022. The brothers backed the success of “Mockingbird” up with a self-titled al-bum full of passion and relatability. On November 25, Low Gap released their latest single, “Say a Prayer.”

During the era of Bro Country, we were about one more “hey girl” away from a revolution, am I right? Actually, am I right? It was a trend for sure, but maybe we were a little hard on artists like Luke Bryan or Florida Georgia Line and songwriters like Dallas Davidson. Maybe, if we actually looked at all the songs played on country radio over a bro-y era, we'd see that this was an annoying niche more than a dominant style, one blamed for pushing women to the edges of the genre and beyond. Or maybe we'll see that everything we think is true. My guest this week is Grady Smith and he's particularly equipped to sort it all out. Here are links to Grady's most popular videos that we talk about, plus other articles discussed during this episode. Todd and Dany welcome country music expert Grady Smith to discuss the whipping boy genre of the 2010s, bro-country! Is there anything redeemable about this controversial genre, and which of its towering, game-changing early '10s smashes is the defining song of its moment, Jason Aldean's "Dirt Road Anthem" or Florida Georgia Line's "Cruise"?

Grady is knee-deep in Craigslist ads, but he's ready to talk country music because this was a FULL week! Nashville has decided that "The Git Up" is the hit we need (ugh), and Texas guys Aaron Watson and Koe Wetzel have decided they don't need Nashville. Plus, new music is coming from Sam Hunt and Miranda Lambert, and there are new tracks out from Jon Pardi, Tyler Childers, and Garth Brooks.Support the show (http://patreon.com/gradywsmith)
Grady is back from vacation, and he's recovering. He's way too sunburnt and dreading the peeling stage, but hey, the show must go on because there's still country music to talk about! Namely, Luke Combs getting an invite to the Grand Ole Opry; Midland, Chris Young, and Sturgill Simpson dropping new music; and there's even a cover of a great Maddie Poppe track from one of you! Enjoy it folks.Support the show (http://patreon.com/gradywsmith)
There's so much to talk about! On the plus side, Miranda Lambert is back with a new single, and Luke Combs has released a truly excellent EP. On the flip side, though, Zac Brown is shouting at haters for no good reason, and I don't even know what to do with Lil Nas X other than just bop along.
