3 Doors Down cancels their summer tour due to the lead singer's stage 4 cancer diagnosis. Vinnie tells us another great story - this time about one of his first jobs. Chris Stapleton killed the Bro Country era… in a good way? White smoke: Habemus papam! Is May the worst month of the year to be a parent? Pet parents take their job seriously. Call it an Only Three Lads spin-off. Call it a new direction. But after 264 episodes discussing classic alternative music, we (Gregg Gunner and Brett Maverick) decided that it was finally time to devote ourselves to our true musical passion...modern bro-country. In this inaugural episode, we will cover our Top 5 Bro-Country Songs. This was a nigh-on-impossible task, as there are soooooo many great tunes in this genre. For those who may be less familiar with Bro-country, here's how the ever-reliable Wikipedia describes it: Bro-country is a form of country pop originating in the 2010s, and is influenced by 21st-century hip hop, hard rock, and electronica. Bro-country songs are often musically upbeat with lyrics about attractive young women, the consumption of alcohol, partying, blue jeans, boots, and pickup trucks. Truck yeah! That's like all of our favorite things rolled into one. Don't worry, we're still the same ol' "lads" - just in Stetson hats and cowboy boots. So come along on this ride...it's got more giddy up than an F150! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Country Music Dads is BACK for Season 2! And we are kicking things off by talking about the change (or lack thereof) that often accompanies the start of a new year. “New Year, new me” we say in January before seeing the “same ol' me” staring back at us in the mirror in March. But is that such a bad thing? George Jones and Dierks Bentley provide support via two songs separated by 40 years but with the same name (different spelling), “Same Ole Me.” The Dads wrestle with self-improvement vs. self-acceptance, change vs. growth, and bro country vs. traditional country. We also discuss changes to the podcast itself. What is different for Season 2, what is staying the same, and what, Dear Listener, do you have to look forward to when you follow the Country Music Dads? True to form, it'll be the same ole show, but a little bit different.Show Notes:02:12: Dave shares a preview of Season 2 of the podcast: what has changed, what is staying the same, and how feedback from our early-adopting listeners has influenced our plans.06:26: Meet Country Music Dads' new co-host: Donnie C. Cutler!08:22: Dave and Donnie discuss George Jones' “Same Ole Me,” Dierks Bentley's “Same ‘Ol Me,” how they think about goal-setting, personal change, and growth, and how their pursuit of improvement could influence their kids.35:02: The Dad Life Sound Check: Donnie shares how the competing pressures of life on the road and family life in Jeremy Pinnell's “Night Time Eagle” resonate with his own attempts to balance self-care pursuits and being there for the bedtime routine. Dave admits that “Halo” is his favorite Beyonce song and that Joshua Ray Walker's highly countrified rendition of it takes him back to a simpler time before kids when weddings were ragers.45:41: In our new, recurring segment called “Change My Mind,” Donnie posits that Bro Country is BAD for the country music genre. Self-proclaimed “recovering bro country aficionado” Dave attempts to convince him otherwise.Mentioned in the Show:Country Music Dads podcast Season 1, Episode 9: “Country Cutler Talks Parenting, Country Music in LA and Strawberry Pie For Breakfast”The Country Cutler Substack newsletter"Atomic Habits" by James ClearThe Marfa TapesDierks' bluegrass album, “Up On The Ridge” from 2010HomeDadCon: the annual convention for at-home dadsThe backlash surrounding the “Bluey” Season 3 "Exercise" episodeEddie Izzard on British vs. American filmsThank you for listening. SUMMARY:We chat with Ashley Gorley who, with more #1 singles than any writer in any genre, is the reigning king of country music songwriters. PART ONE:Paul and Scott discuss the state of contemporary country music, the way the genre has come to dominate the pop chart, and the rapidly-changing nature of what's the most popular song at any given moment.PART TWO:Our in-depth conversation with Ashley GorleyABOUT ASHLEY GORLEY:With an unprecedented track record of nearly 70 chart-topping country hits, Ashley Gorley is perhaps the most commercially successful songwriter in history. He has written more #1 singles than anyone in any genre, and has had over 400 of his songs recorded by artists such as Morgan Wallen, Chris Stapleton, Luke Bryan, Thomas Rhett, Carrie Underwood, Blake Shelton, Kelsea Ballerini, Lee Brice, Brad Paisley, Darius Rucker, Bon Jovi, and Weezer. Ashley has been named ASCAP Country Songwriter of the Year nine times, Billboard Country Songwriter of the Year six times, and NSAI Songwriter of the Year six times. He was then named NSAI Songwriter of the Decade for the period ranging from 2010-2019. Additionally, Ashley was honored as the Top Male Songwriter of 2021—across all genres—by the National Music Publishers Association. In 2023 the NMPA honored him with their icon award for non-performing songwriters. The multiple CMA, ACM, and Grammy nominee has received the CMA's Triple Play Award 20 times in his career, which recognizes songwriters with three or more #1 songs in a single year. In 2016, Ashley became the first songwriter to be honored with three CMA Triple Play Awards in a single year for earning nine chart-topping songs in a 12-month period. He repeated that feat in 2020 and again in 2022. This year, Gorley was announced as ACM Songwriter of the Year, also taking home the Song of the Year award and celebrating three Song of the Year nominations, placing him in rare company with Kris Kristofferson and Merle Haggard, the only other songwriters to achieve the same feat in a single year. In addition to his decorated career as a songwriter, Ashley launched his own music publishing company, Tape Room Music, with a writer roster that has earned nearly 40 #1 hits.

Of course, we check the Bro Country boxes by talking about trucks, tractors, boots and honky-tonks. Next, it wouldn't be an episode of (NA)CP without some bad opinions, so of course, Kyle actually likes some of these songs. Listen for lyric readings, cringy spoken word segments & nostalgia!
In honor of Jake Owen performing at the NHL Stadium Series game at Carter-Finley Stadium in Raleigh, NC between the Carolina Hurricanes and Washington Capitals, Joe Ovies had ChadGPT AI write a 'bro country' song about the Hurricanes, beer, his Honda Civic, and more. Also, former Carolina Hurricanes forward Erik Cole shares thoughts on Stadium Series, what it means for the organization and the community, and if he ever thought something like this was possible. Plus, further discussions about UNC basketball after their 80-72 loss to Miami.

Phil & Jake are back to rank John Carpenter's 1986 film Big Trouble in Little China, the musical subgenre known as Bro-Country, and Baby Yoda on the List of Every Damn Thing. If you have something to add to the list, email it to list@everydamnthing.net (or get at us on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook).SHOW NOTES: The kid in Madonna's Open Your Heart video isn't Leo Dicaprio, he's Felix Howard, who is now an A&R guy. Actors that we talk about include Kurt Russell, Kim Cattrall, Dennis Dun, Victor Wong, James Hong, Danny Trejo, He Huy Quan, Al Leong (here's his wedding announcement), Dennis Quaid, Harrison Ford, Jason Mantzoukas, Tom Cruise, Jackie Chan and Rodney Dangerfield. Other movies discussed include Everything Everywhere All at Once, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, Overboard (which Phil thinks is really indefensible because Kurt Russell's character brainwashes Goldie Hawn's; “it's a Rapemantic comedy”), Minority Report, Dreamscape (filmed in Stockton, CA), Innerspace, Guardians of the Galaxy, The Golden Child, Friday, Caddyshack, The Matrix, Trading Places, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Flashdance, The Truman Show, The Wizard of Oz, Howard the Duck and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. Jack Burton is a very influential protagonist, maybe even more so than Snake Plissken. He's sort of John Wayne as a buffoon. Bruce Willis' persona owes something to Jack Burton. If you want to hear an even more in-depth discussion of Big Trouble in Little China, check out this episode of the Blank Check podcast. Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson owns the remake rights to Big Trouble in Little China and makes noises about a remake from time to time. John Carpenter's soundtrack (and especially the theme song) are a must-listen. Here's the New York Magazine article in which Jody Rosen first coined the term “Bro-Country.” Here's a history of the Country laundry-list song. Dr. Suess' pants with no one inside them are from the last story in the Sneetches book. “Cruise” by Florida Georgia Line is maybe the ur-text of Bro-Country. Or– going further back– in could be either “Honky Tonkin'” or “Jambalaya” by Hank Williams. Other songs discussed by include “Big Green Tractor” and “Dirt Road Anthem” by Jason Aldean, “Sand in My Boots” by Morgan Wallen, “Jack & Diane” by John Mellencamp, “Honky Tonk Badonkadonk” by Trace Adkins, “Dilemma” by Nelly w/ Kelly Rowland, “If That Ain't Country” by David Allan Coe, “That's My Kind of Night” by Luke Brian, “Friday” by Rebecca Black, “All My Rowdy Friends Are Coming Over Tonight” by Hank Williams Jr., “If You've Got the Money, I've Got the Time” by Lefty Frizzell, “Friends In Low Places” by Garth Brooks, “Tulsa Time” by Don Williams, “Boys Round Here” by Blake Shelton, “New Truck” by Dylan Scott, “Beer With My Friends” by Shy Carter, “Beer” and “Turned Up On the Weekend” by Branchez & Big Wet, “American Pie” by Don McLean, “Do You Know the Way to San Jose” by Dionne Warwick, and “Santa Baby” by Eartha Kitt. Chasing Tone - Guitar Podcast About Gear, Effects, Amps and Tone
Brian, Blake, and Richard are back for an all-new episode of the Chasing Tone Podcast!Richard finally caught the Covid, he obviously doesn't have enough MetalZones in his arm, and he has lost his taste completely...and thats why he now likes Bro Country...but apologies in advance for everything he says as some of his brain cells appear to have deteriorated. Brian's made a new Tik Tok and he is mightily upset that a certain someone hasn't watched it yet.Unless you have been living under a rock, you may have seen that Kate Bush has climbed the charts in various countries as a result of Stranger Things and Richard tests Brian's Kate Bush knowledge and unsurprisingly, it is lacking. There is Gilmour content...and Dokken rebuttals - you know the drill...and the discussion finally turns to gatekeeping, music, and internet folk. Were you recently Rick Rolled by Blake? If so you may be entitled to compensation. Call 1-555-BLAKEROLL to claim your free piece of Oregon cheese as compensation. The guys find a luthier that specialises in it and discuss this. Nick & Max from Connecticuts' Emo act Montclair join us to talk about their debut EP “The Stars Will Look Down Upon Us”.We chat about concussions and way too much Metalcore, Worms, Screamo, Dad Rock, The Wiggles, hot takes, punching Ben Shapiro, Bro Country and tactical cats (?)Rush, Private Mind, Stand Still, Weezer and so many more.
On this episode we chat with Zarate Zaalo (aka Squiggly Finesse), keyboardist, vocalist and mastermind of the Bourgeois Mystics. This fantastically eclectic group of intergalactic eccentrics currently reside at their 38 acre Austin-based commune (definitely not a cult) and make outer worldly music to inspire (or conquer?) us mere mortals here on Earth. With names like Countess Von Boopenstein, Tonto Luigi, Oochie Galluccio, and Mathilda Bilderberg, you can expect the unexpected from this Zappa-esque orchestra that ranges from a 5 to 12 piece ensemble. But here's the kicker, be ready to dance! For as progressive as the band gets, they always keep your feet moving. Founded in 2014, the Bourgeois Mystics released their debut, self-produced album Eureka! in 2017. Their cover of Bollywood classic, “Jaan Pehechan Ho” won the Keepin' It Weird Award at the 2018 Austin Music Video Fest and best music video at the Austin Music Video Festival. They have since released a string of singles including "The Most Spiritual" and "Biomimicry" along with music videos and are currently in post production on a new full-length album. Zaalo (a name that will be endlessly mispronounced throughout the podcast) tells us about the core band members and their unique names and roles at the commune (definitely not a cult). He discusses his love of dance and hip-hop and cites some lyrical and phonetic influences like MF Doom. However, the band incorporates just about every genre under the sun. Picture Eminem hiring Mr. Bungle as a backing band and that's a start. From Prog-Rock, Hip-Hop, Surf, Afro-Beat, Dance, Disco, Funk, Fusion and everything in between, the Mystics leave practically no sonic stone unturned. Well, maybe Pop Punk and Bro Country. Their idiosyncratic sound and local popularity has lead to national tours where the band performed over 150 shows sharing bills with a wide variety of underground bands (Zaalo cites Trap Rabbit as personal favorite) as well as musical giants like George Clinton. This podcast was particularly fun (and juvenile), ridden with dick jokes, tentacle porn talk, and a bizarre strip show. We learned of an adult site called Fuck for Forests (yet to google) and what life is like in a commune (definitely not a cult). We talk veganism and the art of herbivorious over-indulgence, Skunk's under-indulgent poverty stricken Vegas trip, Zaalo's reasons for moving to Austin, a biomimetic chicken labor force, investments in Oat Milk, guns, Sacha Baran Cohen, Curb Your Enthusiasm, nerdy Sci-fi shows and God forbid, Nickelback. This podcast may not be for the faint of heart or easily offended, but if you want to have a laugh along with some musicians embracing their eternal adolescence, then it just might be for you. And seriously, do yourself a favor and check out the Bourgeois Mystics! They are "a genre-defying dance party waiting to explode" and a band who "display the tongue-in-cheek humor of a psychedelic Monty Python and an absurdist splatter of funk-rock, hip-hop, and jazz." Thanks for listening! For more on the Bourgeois Mystics: Spotify | Apple Music | YouTube | Facebook | Instagram

This episode kicks off by talking about bro country music! What is bro country? It's a bunch of middle-aged dudes singing about things that only a seventeen-year-old boy should get excited about. That leads us into one of the weirdest segments ever on the show where Kyle does a dramatic lyric reading of a popular bro country song! The majority of this episode is spent continuing the conversation from last week, talking about what it means that we live in a Post-Christian culture and what that means. This week, we talk about the way we should shift our evangelism and witness in light of all this. We round it out with the recommendation of the week and details about the future first birthday of (Not A) Christian Podcast.

Subscribe to both shows wherever you get your podcasts! If you have something to add to the list, email it to list@everydamnthing.net (or get at us on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook).SHOW NOTES: Bro-Country is a tricky term because no one self-identifies as a fan. So there's a lot of judgment baked into the word. It's not exactly a slur but it's not real descriptive. Florida Georgia Line is a “Country music act” for example that fits the bill but we doubt if you asked them they'd say Bro-Country is their genre. Who knows, maybe they would. Morgan Wallen broke covid quarantine and got (temporarily) canceled from hosting Saturday Night Live, and then later got drunk and shouted some racial slurs which got him canceled in general. Our mouths start to hurt from just saying the words Sour Patch Kids Cereal. Sour Patch Kids Ice Cream is a little less painful. Piggly-Wiggly was, in fact, the first modern grocery store with checkout stands, individually price-marked items and shopping carts. In the episode, we reveal our befuddlement with the correct pronunciation of “shaman”. According to Cambridge Dictionary, in the UK it rhymes with “layman” and in the US it rhymes with “ramen”. Seagal movies that we discuss include Under Siege, Under Siege 2: Dark Territory, Exit Wounds (co-starring DMX) and On Deadly Ground (here's the environmentalist sermon at the end of it). Here's Seagal with Valdimir Putin. Here he is giving a samurai sword to Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro. Here's him and Sheriff Joe Arapaio (we're not sure if this is before or after they allegedly killed a puppy with a tank while shooting Steven Seagal: Lawman). The full name of Seagal's conspiracy thriller novel is The Way of the Shadow Wolves: The Deep State and the Highjacking of America. His album is called Songs from the Crystal Cave. We had Bro-Country and then we had Boyfriend Country and now James has detected the latest trend emerging in commercial and mainstream Country music right now.To find out what he thinks that is you need to listen in as he talks about what links Lady A to Jimmie Allen to Brett Young to Eric Church's forthcoming triple album release 'Heart & Soul' as these artists are all at the vanguard of the latest emerging trend.
On this week's episode, Dave and Steve are joined by friend and returning guest Jessie McCormick to give 'Bro Country' the ol' college try and see if there's any gold to be discovered amongst the trucks, coolers of silver bullets, and having a few beers before driving down some backroads (please do no do that). You can find Jessie's most recent release, 'Songs My Mom Likes", on their bandcamp at Jessie McCormick Bandcamp. Check out their other band, The Foes of Fern, at Foes of Fern Bandcamp.

During the era of Bro Country, we were about one more “hey girl” away from a revolution, am I right? Actually, am I right? It was a trend for sure, but maybe we were a little hard on artists like Luke Bryan or Florida Georgia Line and songwriters like Dallas Davidson. Maybe, if we actually looked at all the songs played on country radio over a bro-y era, we'd see that this was an annoying niche more than a dominant style, one blamed for pushing women to the edges of the genre and beyond. Or maybe we'll see that everything we think is true. My guest this week is Grady Smith and he's particularly equipped to sort it all out. Here are links to Grady's most popular videos that we talk about, plus other articles discussed during this episode. I know it's a stretch, but there is some genuine six degrees of separation stuff going on here. This week I connect the dots between one of the most important musical movements in a generation all the way to Bro Country and it's all because of Canada (well...one Canadian producer). I also look at music that was popular on the singles charts in 1999 with my friend and mentor Claire Spencer (PD and Mornings on Air 106.1 in Airdrie) and revisit two bands I used to love but have changed opinions on in recent years. THE TROUBADOUR PODCAST - The Premier Red Dirt, Texas Country and Independent Music Podcast
Rob Baird is a singer and songwriter who had the good fortune of being raised in the legendary music town of Memphis, TN. He first picked up a guitar in his teen years. During his career thus far he’s been signed by a label, been a staff writer on Music Row, has shared tour dates with many of the big stars in the business, and has had many of his songs picked up by television shows. But it all hasn’t been roses…. After getting into some trouble as an adolescent, his father sent him off to work on a ranch in the West. His experience with ranching and livestock led him to school in Ft. Worth to study such things, however, after his first experience with artificial-insemination, he decided that playing music for a living and writing songs sounded like a much better option. Rob built a strong following by playing a weekly gig in Ft. Worth which gave him the confidence to record and hit the road. Following the release of his first record he caught the ear of a label in Nashville and ended up becoming a staff writer on Music Row for many years. After becoming a bit disillusioned with the recent Bro-Country movement, Rob packed up and moved back to Texas and is now settled in Austin. In this episode he recounts some cool anecdotes about his career thus far including sharing dates with the sometimes “abrasive” Travis Tritt and having checks sent to his mailbox signed by Ashton Kutcher. A beer named Sue and a new place to brew for Yazoo Yazoo Brewing Co. founder Linus Hall left the exciting world of tire engineering to found his brewery in 2003. Currently in their 2nd home, Yazoo is in the process of moving to a new, much larger location in Madison, TN. We sample a few of Yazoo's beers, including the new 15th Anniversary Ale brewed with Sabro hops, a new (a very tasty) variety. Hall shares some of the legal challenges Tennessee brewers have faced over the years and why he had to get a distillery license to brew his smoked beer, Sue. Brian digs in on the Nashville Hot Chicken scene and the "laws" that surround it and we discuss Yazoo's Embrace the Funk sour program. Adam Rutledge is a dynamic country newcomer managed by superstar songwriter/performer Phil Vassar. I was lucky to get a quick chat with him. (Apologies in advance for the slightly irritating hiccups, pops and clicks due to a less than optimum phone connection. If I had my way, I would have called him and done it again, but didn't want to push my luck. I was happy to have the chance to talk to him) We discuss his debut album RUNWAY, his first single "Love Kickin' In", his interesting Phil Vassar connection, and we will check the accuracy of info posted on the interwebs about him (some turned out to be true - and some? WOW! WAYYYY of base.) I am also chomping at the bit to speak with Phil himself. He has agreed to come on, and will let you know definitely when that happens! RIKI KNOX is a singer, songwriter and entertainer who’s unique sound and genuine lyrics have seen her blazing a new trail in the country music scene. She has a style that is authentically her own. With the term ‘Bro Country’ at its peak, she offers a strong reminder that being “raised country” is a way of life…without gender attachment. “I grew up as one of the guys” she recalls. "Sure, I was happy to sit on the passenger side of the pick up, or on the back of the four wheeler, but that doesn’t mean I wasn’t doing my fair share of the driving” She’s a girl who values and appreciates the ‘little things in life’. That grounded mindset has seen her go from playing church and charity events, to sharing the big stage with artists like Dallas Smith, Marc Jordan, and Justin Hines - to name a few. 2014 found Riki filling her travel book with trips between Toronto and Nashville, and into Western Canada to lay the groundwork for her forthcoming album. “I wanted to write songs that really spoke to who I am as both an artist and a person” she explains. Staying true to that statement, she spent time writing with some very notable songwriters, including Willie Mack (Sara Evans, Collin Raye, The Oakridge Boys, Mark Wills), Jason McCoy (The Road Hammers), Duane Steele, Jake Mathews, Patricia Conroy, and Troy Kokol among others. When satisfied that she had the right songs in hand, she headed back to Nashville armed with the goal of creating great new music that her fans would appreciate and relate to. With Willie Mack at the producers helm, the infectious hooks and lyrics, along with Riki’s energy and unique style, manage to seamlessly blend classic country, country rock, and a new age sound without missing a beat. Riki's new single is called Six Feet Under.
