As part of our series devoted to the pasts and futures of higher education in the United States, this conversation, hosted by LCHP Director David Myers, features Princeton sociologist Kim Lane Scheppele alongside legal scholars Ariela Gross from UCLA and Nomi Stolzenberg from USC to discuss an escalating war on universities by the Trump administration. Scheppele frames the assault as a distinctly modern autocratic strategy: not bullets, but budgets that target elite institutions to seek ideological conformity, weaken leadership, and force anticipatory compliance. Drawing on her experience living in Hungary under Viktor Orbán, she identifies an authoritarian playbook that pairs fiscal strangulation with autocratic legalism, the repurposing of law to anti-democratic ends, while leveraging accusations to mask or legitimize discriminatory and coercive governance.Gross emphasizes how long-standing right-wing projects, especially attacks on DEI, are being accelerated through institutional bargaining (for example, over withheld scientific funding) while trading away racial and gender justice infrastructure. Stolzenberg adds a longue durée account of U.S. conservative opposition to the modern university, highlighting theological currents that cast universities as battlegrounds in a moral struggle over national identity. Kim Lane Scheppele is the Laurance S. Rockefeller Professor of Sociology and International Affairs in the Princeton School of Public and International Affairs and the University Center for Human Values at Princeton University. She is also a faculty fellow at the University of Pennsylvania Law School. Her book, Legal Secrets, won Special Recognition in the Distinguished Scholarly Publication competition of the American Sociological Association as well as the Corwin Prize of the American Political Science Association.Ariela Gross is a Distinguished Professor of Law and History at UCLA and teaches Contract Law, Constitutional Law, Enslavement and Racialization in U.S. Legal History, as well as other courses on race and legal history. Gross is the author of Becoming Free, Becoming Black: Race, Freedom, and Law in Cuba, Virginia, and Louisiana, with Alejandro de la Fuente (Cambridge UP 2020) and What Blood Won't Tell: A History of Race on Trial in America (Harvard UP 2008).Nomi M. Stolzenberg is the Nathan and Lilly Shapell Chair in Law at the USC Gould School of Law. Her research spans a range of interdisciplinary interests, including law and religion, law and liberalism, law and psychoanalysis, and law and literature. Stolzenberg's scholarly publications include the frequently cited “The Profanity of Law”. With David N. Myers, she has published American Shtetl: The Making of Kiryas Joel, a Hasidic Village in Upstate New Yo

Pencil Busters, we made it through another week! So let's take some time to reflect on how essential-curricular activities contribute to the "becoming" of young adults. Two weeks ago, we talked with the managers of WSU Hockey's award-winning social media team. Today, we hear from Kianna Hamer and Katherine Bresani, members of the team who produce incredible video and photography to support the hockey team. Together with Giancarlo Bresani, dedicated WSU parent and supporter of the social media team, Kianna and Katherine created two video series to support the hockey players. Their series "Behind the Bench" provides rarely-seen footage of players and coaches preparing for games. Their other series, "Meet the Players" introduces and humanizes the team members to their school and beyond. The projects create unique mementos at a pivotal period of the players' lives, preserving these magical moments of them becoming their adult selves. And it's not just the players who benefit from the creative endeavors! Kianna and Katherine share how they've grown, found their passions, and created enduring connections through their work. They themselves relish in the beauty of becoming, of finding purpose in telling the stories of their team members. BustED Pencils: Fully Leaded Education Talk is part of Civic Media. Please join us for this powerful full moon of February transmission and meditation. We will be asking the Divine, Our Guides and Teachers, the Higher Beings, the Arcturians ,other Awakened Galactic Beings, Our Holy Guardian Angel, and Our Higher Self to imprint the patterns, habits, and tendencies to connect to our multidimensional selves and in particular to our pure divine awareness. By being flexible in our ultimate identification of self, we are able to dissolve the story lines of our ego and not take our lives so seriously. We bring this lightness of being then to all our interactions and environments and help raise the overall frequency and vibration of the planet. The schedule for this meeting includes a short discussion of our multidimensional selves, what it means, and how to be flexible with our overall identification of self. We will then download a 45 minute full moon Arcturian Becoming Free transmission to bring through these patterns and information into our system. After the transmission we will take a short integration break followed by an awareness and space meditation meant to strengthen our overall pillar of light energy and connect us to our natural mind. The natural mind is a term to that part of us that is pure awareness, eternal, and ever moving throughout our various incarnations. This recording is the introductory talk before the transmission.

Dr. Patrick Knapp, the founder of Becoming Free, a program designed to help individuals recover from unique harmful religious or spiritual experiences, is here to discuss his experience in an abusive religious group. Dr. Knapp provides hope to those who have shared that experience and to the families of cult members. In addition, he discusses the definition of a cult, why a person becomes involved, and the steps needed to heal. Don't miss this informative discussion on today's Beyond the Balance Sheet episode. IN THIS EPISODE: [02:11] Dr. Knapp defines a religious cult and describes why people are attracted to them. [06:12] Dr. Knapp tells his story of being in a religiously abusive organization. [10:29] Why do people leave or want to leave these abusive organizations? [12:33] Dr. Knapp explains the healing journey for a person leaving the group. [15:23] Do people leaving these groups still want to be connected to the Bible and where they can go for help? [18:08] What advice do you give a family member? Dr. Knapp shares some of the organizations where support is available. KEY TAKEAWAYS: It is a slow progression to be manipulated by a cult leader. Often, a person becomes brainwashed. There is hope for a person coming out of a cult. They need to know it's not their fault, and they need encouragement and hope. Not all cults are like Jonestown. But, unfortunately, people are so susceptible to them because they seem welcoming and can appear to be a good thing. RESOURCES: Beyond the Balance Sheet Website Becoming Free Website BIOGRAPHY: Patrick J. Knapp, Ph.D., Pat's initial interest in cult recovery stems from his own involvement in a Bible-based group (1970-1984). His M.A. thesis (Fall 2000) was titled: “The Place of Mind-Control in the Cult Recovery Process.” He completed 98 semester hours of doctoral studies in Marriage and Family Counseling (Professional Track), at Gordon-Conwell in Charlotte, NC, with an emphasis on family systems and attachment theory, and completed his doctorate (Ph.D.) at Graduate Theological Foundation (GTF). His doctoral thesis was titled: “A Survey of Religious Abuse and Recovery.” He contributed a book chapter on developing support groups from a faith-based perspective for those affected by religiously abusive environments, available under the title: Cult Recovery: A Clinician's Guide to Working with former members and Families (2017). His first complete book was Understanding Religious Abuse and Recovery: Discovering essential principles for Hope and Healing (2021). Most recently, he co-authored (with his wife, Heidi, CLC) the book chapter “Marital Damage and Recovery Following Religious Abuse” in Wounded Faith: Understanding and Healing from spiritual abuse (2022). Audio Recording Sermon OutlineSpeaker: Rev. Scott StrickmanSermon Series: John 1-12: Come, See, Live!John 8:31-59 (ESV) 31 So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed him, “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, 32 and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” 33 They answered him, “We are offspring of Abraham and have never been enslaved to anyone. How is it that you say, ‘You will become free'?” 34 Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who practices sin is a slave to sin. 35 The slave does not remain in the house forever; the son remains forever. 36 So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed. 37 I know that you are offspring of Abraham; yet you seek to kill me because my word finds no place in you. 38 I speak of what I have seen with my Father, and you do what you have heard from your father.” 39 They answered him, “Abraham is our father.” Jesus said to them, “If you were Abraham's children, you would be doing the works Abraham did, 40 but now you seek to kill me, a man who has told you the truth that I heard from God. This is not what Abraham did. 41 You are doing the works your father did.” They said to him, “We were not born of sexual immorality. We have one Father—even God.” 42 Jesus said to them, “If God were your Father, you would love me, for I came from God and I am here. I came not of my own accord, but he sent me. 43 Why do you not understand what I say? It is because you cannot bear to hear my word. 44 You are of your father the devil, and your will is to do your father's desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks out of his own character, for he is a liar and the father of lies. 45 But because I tell the truth, you do not believe me. 46 Which one of you convicts me of sin? If I tell the truth, why do you not believe me? 47 Whoever is of God hears the words of God. The reason why you do not hear them is that you are not of God.” 48 The Jews answered him, “Are we not right in saying that you are a Samaritan and have a demon?” 49 Jesus answered, “I do not have a demon, but I honor my Father, and you dishonor me. 50 Yet I do not seek my own glory; there is One who seeks it, and he is the judge. 51 Truly, truly, I say to you, if anyone keeps my word, he will never see death.” 52 The Jews said to him, “Now we know that you have a demon! Abraham died, as did the prophets, yet you say, ‘If anyone keeps my word, he will never taste death.' 53 Are you greater than our father Abraham, who died? And the prophets died! Who do you make yourself out to be?” 54 Jesus answered, “If I glorify myself, my glory is nothing. It is my Father who glorifies me, of whom you say, ‘He is our God.' 55 But you have not known him. I know him. If I were to say that I do not know him, I would be a liar like you, but I do know him and I keep his word. 56 Your father Abraham rejoiced that he would see my day. He saw it and was glad.” 57 So the Jews said to him, “You are not yet fifty years old, and have you seen Abraham?” 58 Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I am.” 59 So they picked up stones to throw at him, but Jesus hid himself and went out of the temple.Sermon OutlineWhat do you need to experience and grow in freedom? Set us free from sin and death. We confess our resistance to your word. We fail to discern truth, and we fail to speak and live truth. At times we feel trapped. We think, say and do what we know is wrong. We admit our sin, and long to be free of it. We thank you that the promise made to Abraham was fulfilled in Christ, and that by faith in him we are members of your family. Forgive us. Amen.Questions for ReflectionWhen are you most tempted to lie?In what areas of your life do you feel stuck? Is Vince McMahon slowly creeping himself back to WWE Creative? Why have their been more changes than originally reported for Wrestlemania 39 if Triple H had his plans already laid out? On today's Off the Script with JDfromNY, we explore the rumors and speculation surrounding Vince McMahon's involvement in the creative direction of Wrestlemania 39. Many fans have been speculating that McMahon has been heavily involved in the planning of the biggest event on WWE's calendar, leading to questions about the potential impact on the overall product, why strange creative decisions have been made, or changed, and the rumor that some within the company believe he is back in the creative department. We delve into the evidence and discuss the reasons behind these rumors, as well as what it could mean for the future of WWE. Also, Kenny Omega contract is a huge topic of discussion as WWE plans to go hard after Kenny Omega. As the current AEW Trios Champions with The Young Bucks, Omega's wrestling contract is set to expire soon, and he will have to make a crucial decision regarding his future. While the feeling in WWE is that signing Omega is a top priority for them, reports suggest that AEW has added time to his contract due to him missing action for nine months last year. However, the extended time frame hasn't been finalized yet. It remains to be seen what Omega will choose and if he will stick with The Young Bucks, who are also up for new contracts at the end of the year. WWE announces King and Queen of the Ring, FTR possibly leaving AEW after heat with the company becomes public on Twitter, and major news on the status of Jeff Hardy, and his DUI case.

Hello everyone! Welcome to the Its Emily Show! Every now and again, you hear a story that shakes you to the core. It's exactly what I felt when I met Doug Bopst. He went from being completely at rock bottom, having been a convicted felon and struggling with drug addiction to now being a world-leading fitness coach, author of three books, host of the Adversity Advantage Podcast, and mentor to many others who are trying to overcome adversity in their own lives. Doug used his time away as an opportunity to reconnect with himself. Through this process, he began to see himself as more than just a felon but someone who had the potential to become great at anything he chose to pursue. His mission is to help others see the light at the end of the tunnel and overcome their own adversity so they can be happy and live their best lives possible. Not only does Doug share his story with raw honesty, but he also shares how we can all use adversity in our lives as a tool for growth rather than a reason for us to give up or accept defeat. We explore the importance of focusing on small steps, giving yourself grace when things get tough, and how to build the confidence and resilience needed to come out stronger and better from the challenges you face. Let's dive in. Also in this episode: How Doug's cellmate, Eric, helped save him. How your story can help others see the world differently. Using pain as a positive force in your life. Reconnecting with yourself and being intentional about it. Giving yourself a second chance is the best way to pay it forward. Why you need to surround yourself with people with common futures, not a common past. The three words that we should all strive to live by. What is faith? Message to parents with children battling addiction. How focusing on small steps and easy wins leads to big things. The three A's to remember when going through a hard time.
