Heavyweights is a kid friendly take on the the traditional slobs versus snobs trope. In it, a group of kids are supposed to be headed to enjoy an awesome summer; but once there, they discover that the beloved owners of Camp Hope were forced to sell to an obnoxious fitness freak, Tony Perkis. It's Perkis' mission to whip these kids into shape—only not for their own benefit. He's trying to sell an infomercial about his patented Perkis System. It then becomes the mission of the titular Heavyweights to take back their summer from the unstable Perkis. Hijinks, hilarity, and a fair bit of sadism ensue. Full of mixed messages about excess weight, the movie can be a tonal rubber band. And Heavyweights is also extremely 90s, which as we all know, was a lawless ass time. Hence why it received general poor reviews and struggled to make a dent at the box office. Despite that, though, it is generally considered a cult classic—especially since Perkis is such a memorable character. In her early 30's, Karen survived both melanoma and thyroid cancers, leading to a treatment regimen including a gluten-free diet. After adopting a gluten-free diet, Karen struggled to find a great tasting, 100% gluten-free beer. If the lack of quality gluten-free options was a challenge for her, she thought it certainly was a challenge for others as well. With an MBA in Entrepreneurial Studies from the University of Colorado at Denver and 15 years of beer industry experience under her belt, Hertz researched gluten-free ingredients, tested alternatives, and gained an understanding of brewing processes in order to create a better solution. Thus, the idea for Holidaily Brewing Company was born. Since opening the brewery in 2016, Holidaily has grown over 1500%. After years of exponential growth in Colorado, Holidaily Brewing opened the doors to a new production brewery in May of 2019, making them the largest dedicated gluten-free brewery in the U.S. The expansion increased their brewing capacity, allowing them to meet demand in Colorado, and expand distribution to Arizona, Wyoming, Kansas, Missouri, Oklahoma, Texas, and Southern California with continued growth in their future. Holidaily's success has garnered recognition from Bon Appetit Magazine, Gluten-free Living Magazine, Food & Wine Magazine, Today, Popsugar and more. Beverages, of course, head the list, but we also talk about sports, games, pop culture and most other topics that are put on the table. While we may be the only two who are actually talking, there are many others who drop by to hang out and chat with us via the written word. One listener commented that they could only drink gluten free beverages and another one suggested that we do a podcast on gluten free beer. Several listeners quickly shared their approval of that idea and before we knew it, we were planning a podcast on gluten free beer! This week's episode will be on gluten-free or gluten reduced beers and we have three to share with you. The gluten free beer is Fat Randy’s IPA from Holidaily Brewing Co, and the two gluten reduced are Omission Brewing Company’s IPA and Stone’s Delicious IPA. Holidaily is a completely gluten-free brewery while the other two use an enzyme to break down the gluten into particles that the body cannot detect as gluten. What did we think? What do you think? I am excited to introduce two extraordinary women to you today on this episode of Extraordinary Women Radio,  Manouschka Guerrier, Chef at Food Network and Karen Hertz, the Founder and Chief Brewista of Holidaily Brewery. This interview was a fun one! We did it at the Holidaily Brewery in Golden, CO with a flight of beers in front of us! And how this came about was equally as fun! I belong to a secret Facebook group of about 20,000 women called the FEMPS… you have to get invited to this group by someone already in the group… and it is therefore, the most extraordinary group of women! Last month, there was a post from Manouschka Guerrier.  Hey Femps I’m heading to Colorado May 25th for about 10 days shooting my docuseries #FaceReality & looking to interview women in the cannabis, brewery & food industry. Anyone down to meet & share your story or know anyone in these industries to link me up with? Well, anyone who knows me, knows I’m a connector – and so within minutes I had connected Manouschka up with half-a-dozen different women, including Karen Hertz, the founder and Chief Brewista at my favorite gluten-free brewery – Holidaily! I had a blast interviewing Manouschka and Karen at Holidaily! Manouschka is personal chef to the stars, owner of #SingleServe, Chef at Foodnetwork and #RecipeHunters, co-star of Private Chefs of Beverly Hills and creator of her new docuseries called Face Reality! In addition, she has been a chef at NBC and Oprah Winfrey Network. And Karen Hertz of Holidaily is an inspirational story herself! I actually interviewed Karen in one of my forth episode of Extraordinary Women Radio, where she told her start up story. Real craft beer, real grains, completely gluten-free As part of her cancer treatment, Holidaily Brewing founder and Chief Brewista Karen Hertz's treatment was going on a gluten-free diet.  As a life-long sports fan and outdoor enthusiast, she missed having a beer at the game or at the end of a day on the slopes.  She tried the gluten-free options that were available at the time but none of them hit the mark for what a craft beer should taste like.  With a passion for craft beer and a background in the beer industry Hertz had a "simple" solution, she'd start a craft brewery focusing on gluten-free beers that actually tasted like beer. The process starts with using real grains.  Barley and wheat are out, but Holidaily uses primarily millet and buckwheat in their beers.  Hertz shares how the brewing process is similar, with a few tweaks to accommodate for the small grains.  The end result is beer that actually tastes like beer, and is 100% safe for anyone with Celiac disease or gluten sensitivity. Karen Hertz has had over 12+ years of experience in the brewing industry that was disrupted by two major health incidences of Melanoma in 2007 and Thyroid Cancer in 2009. As a two-time cancer survivor, her post-cancer treatment plan required a gluten free diet, which after adopting - found herself struggling to find a great tasting, 100% gluten-free beer. This led her to founding Holidaily Brewing Company in 2016. Karen Hertz has had over 12+ years of experience in the brewing industry that was disrupted by two major health incidences of Melanoma in 2007 and Thyroid Cancer in 2009. As a two-time cancer survivor, her post-cancer treatment plan required a gluten free diet, which after adopting - found herself struggling to find a great tasting, 100% gluten-free beer. This led her to founding Holidaily Brewing Company in 2016. Holidaily has gone on to win multiple awards locally and nationally in various beer categories, and currently holds title as one of "The Hottest Breweries in Denver Right Now." She is a beer lover who has been gluten-free for over 5 years and in 2016 opened Colorado's first 100% dedicated gluten-free brewery.
