How can you as an individual and OCF as a parachurch ministry support them in those challenges? KG talks about a scaffolding approach to her role as OCF's director of women's ministry. How can you take a similar approach to come alongside and mentor the next generation for ministry and service? KG also talks about the isolation female officers can sometimes feel when they're the only one among all male officers. How has finding someone with similar experiences been an encouragement to you?

The Indiana Health Fair is back as part of the Indiana Black Expo's Summer Celebration, offering free health screenings, fitness activities, and vital resources for families across the state.State Health Commissioner Dr. Lindsay Weaver says the goal is to break down barriers, especially for communities of color, by creating a welcoming space to talk about wellness.“It's way less intimidating than going to a doctor's office,” Weaver said. “We have a lot of fun things there, there's music, there's people dancing. You can learn about your health and, at the same time, start those initial checkups.”The health fair runs Thursday through Sunday at the Indiana Convention Center. It's open to all ages, with services ranging from blood pressure checks and cholesterol screenings to diabetes testing and high school physicals.“There's actually $4,000 worth of free screenings there,” Weaver said. “They're doing high school physicals for those kiddos who are getting ready to go back to school and they need their physical.”Beyond the screenings, the fair offers one-on-one help with navigating insurance, obtaining vital records, and connecting to long-term care.“If they are identified as having a need at the fair, then of course we're going to help to get them connected,” Weaver said. “You can get your birth certificate if you need to get your birth certificate. There's really a lot of different volunteers and sponsors that are there to meet people wherever they're at.”Friday night is Ladies' Night, with a spotlight on women's health and a healthy dose of fun.“People can come and learn about specifically women's health care needs,” Weaver said. “But at the same time, during Ladies' Night, they're doing Zumba dancing, right? So, we have a mix of fun, and at the same time, checking up on your health and educating you about your health.”Weaver encourages anyone who might be hesitant to attend to bring a friend or family member.“If you are somebody who knows, has a family member, a friend, a neighbor, who you know is hesitant, ask them to come with you,” she said. “It is always better to have someone with you, and you're going to meet a lot of smiling faces.”Weaver added, “It is way easier to prevent disease than it is to treat it. And, so we really want to focus on that prevention piece.”The Indiana Health Fair is free to attend and continues through Sunday inside the Indiana Convention Center.Dates and timesThursday: 4 p.m. – 8 p.m.Friday: 1 p.m. – 7 p.m.Saturday: 10 a.m. – 8 p.m.Sunday: Noon – 6 p.m.For more information, click here.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Hast du dich schonmal gefragt, was da gerade eigentlich in unserer Gesellschaft los ist? Inspired by an OCF Bible study he participated in 15 years ago in Germany and having seen the impact of humility in his own life and career, Jeff addresses several questions such as why humility matters to the military leader, what it is and what it isn't, and more. POINTS TO PONDER As you listen to this conversation with Jeff, here are a few questions to ponder in your personal time, with a small group, or with a mentor: How would you define humility? What's a personal example of humility making a difference, whether you were the one displaying humility or observing someone observing humility? How does Christ's example encourage you to lead and live humbly? What gifts has God given you that you can use to serve others for His glory?

Westerville Education Association member Pablo Chignolli believes everyone has a story to tell. His story is shaped by his experiences after immigrating to the United States from Peru as a young adult. The hardship and discrimination he faced then led him on a journey to foster cultural awareness and inclusivity. Now, as a Spanish teacher at Westerville Central High School, he has teamed up with another teacher to help immigrant students in their school tell their own stories and find their own voices. Mr. Chignolli discusses their new book of memoirs powerful conversation with Ohio Schools editor Julie Newhall. FULL DETAILS: www.ohea.org/diversereadersFeatured Education Matters guest: Pablo Chignolli, Westerville Education Association memberA Spanish teacher in Westerville City Schools, Pablo Chignolli immigrated to the United States from Lima, Peru, in 2003. His arrival in the United States marked the beginning of a journey full of linguistic and cultural challenges. Mr. Chignolli navigated those hardships and issues with discrimination as he pursued a bachelor's degree in Latin American Cultural Studies, with a minor in Andean and Amazonian studies from The Ohio State University. He then went on to earn a master's degree in World Language Education. Upon graduating from that program, Chignolli became a teacher in Reynoldsburg City Schools before moving to a job in Westerville City Schools a few years later. Mr. Chignolli collaborated with fellow Westerville Education Association member Deb Jones, who teaches English Learners, to spearhead the creation of the "The Ones Among Us: Memoirs of Culturally Diverse High School Students," which was published in 2024. About us:The Ohio Education Association represents about 120,000 teachers, faculty members and support professionals who work in Ohio's schools, colleges, and universities to help improve public education and the lives of Ohio's children. OEA members provide professional services to benefit students, schools, and the public in virtually every position needed to run Ohio's schools.Public Education Matters host Katie Olmsted serves as Media Relations Consultant for the Ohio Education Association. She joined OEA in May 2020, after a ten-year career as an Emmy Award winning television reporter, anchor, and producer. Katie comes from a family of educators and is passionate about telling educators' stories and advocating for Ohio's students. She lives in Central Ohio with her husband and two young children. Katie often jokes that her children are walking petri dishes because they are always bringing one kind of 'bug' or another home from preschool and daycare. As you can hear in this episode, Katie was battling yet another one of those illnesses while recording the interviews for this episode. Katie believes she has a good chance of developing an unstoppable immune system by the time her kids are both in elementary school. This episode was recorded on May 15 and May 28, 2024.

Let's come together to kick off a great summer by celebrating diverse readers, so we can set all students up for success!Featured Education Matters guest: Tiffany Thomas, Hilliard Education Association member Tiffany Thomas is a 17 year dedicated educator and advocate for diversity, equity and inclusion in the Hilliard City School District. She is a native of Columbus, Ohio, a proud graduate of Columbus City Schools, and mother to a fierce three year old little girl. She has been an English Language Arts teacher for the past sixteen years and recently transitioned into the position of Innovative Media Specialist at Hilliard Bradley High School. During her time in the classroom,Tiffany has focused her approach on developing lessons and standards aligned curriculum for grade level courses that incorporated culturally relevant teaching practices, helped develop the district wide ELA curriculum , and represented her colleagues as a Hilliard Education Association Building Representative. Graduating from Ohio University in 2005 with a Bachelor's of Science in Integrated Language Arts and from The Ohio State University in 2008 with a Master's of Arts in Diversity Studies, Tiffany has honed her skill and love for culturally relevant education through her teaching practices and numerous professional development opportunities she has created and led in her district and community. Throughout her professional journey, Tiffany responded to her colleagues' need for meaningful professional development by creating opportunities for teachers to share in their own journeys with diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). She has been able to create opportunities for teachers to work with authors such as Jason Reynolds, Brendan Kiely, Mindy McGinnis and Natalie Richards, concerning valuing student experience in the classroom. In the spring of 2020, the murder of George Floyd sparked amovement within the Hilliard City School District that created a need for strategies and pedagogies when trying to embrace the black, brown, and disenfranchised voices within the classroom. Tiffany partnered with a group of colleagues, Pam Antos, Kelsey Burkett, Daniel Redman, and Lane Vanderhule, to lead the charge and create professional development opportunities for teachers centering on embracing anti-racist pedagogy and practice within our classrooms. In efforts to create an environment that every student feels comfortable, accepted and heard, Tiffany has taken the reins of the DEI efforts within her building, helping to lead a team of teachers in both culturally relevant teaching and restorative practices. She has also led professional development for other HSCD diversity facilitators as well as helping them to develop effective DEI teams throughout the district. Furthering the chance to always value student voice, Tiffany leads the Diversity Club, a student group that meets monthly to discuss current DEI topics and theeffects of these issues on them as high school students and members of the global society. These conversations are open to all and are a transformative experience for both students and staff. This year Tiffany was recognized as the 2023 OCTELA Outstanding English Language Arts Educator in the Secondary category and nominated to represent Ohio as a Teacher of Excellence at NCTE.
