World Toilet Day happens every year on November 19 to remind people how important toilets are. Many kids in South Africa still have to use unsafe pit toilets at school which can be dangerous and make learning harder. People are working on fixing this by building better toilets and making sure schools have clean water, but there's still a lot to do to keep every child safe and healthy at school. This year's World Toilet Day theme is “Toilets - A Place for Peace”. Now, Malaysia has made some progress when it comes to our public toilets, with the government making efforts to incentivise premises and ramping up inspections, but we haven't always been known for best toilet facilities. So we thought it would be a great time to investigate and find out what makes a good public toilet, the idea of “peace” when it comes to toilet-related sanitation and how far along are we in achieving the government's aim for a BMW (Bersih, Menawan, Wangi) rated toilet.Image Credit: Wemo, ShutterstockSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Dr. Jack Sim, founder of the World Toilet Organization, is a leader in highlighting this sanitation issue. Generally, humans use the toilet 6 to 8 times a day, however, over 2 billion people of the Earth's 8 billion population do not have access to safe or sufficient toilet facilities and openly defecate. Two million people die each year from diarrhea. Dr. Sim has collaborated with a wide range of professionals to shine the spotlight on this, at times, sensitive topic by working with Bill Gates, Rotary International and several United Nations agencies. The UN has declared November 19 as World Toilet Day. Goal number 6, of the United Nations 17 Sustainable Development Goals, has six outcome targets that include: Safe and affordable drinking water; end open defecation and provide access to sanitation, and hygiene, improve water quality, wastewater treatment and

November 19 is World Toilet Day, a crucial health issue in India. According to the World Bank, nearly 15 percent of the country's population does not have access to a toilet and the consequences are severe: water pollution, waterborne diseases and sexual violence. In 2014, Prime Minister Narendra Modi promised that open defecation would be eradicated in India. Eight years after the government's promise, India still lacks toilets and the country's sanitary problems are not getting any better. Our correspondents report.
On today's show, plans to build a neurodivergent residential community, local music and educating about the lack of access to toilets or basic sanitation. Plus, Alison Parker highlights Mary Church Terrell in her book, "Unceasing Militant."

Amidst the topical banter we dive a little deeper into things like provoking with purpose, outsourcing and what's the deal with many of us (myself very much included) hanging on to shit that doesn't serve us. We use this piece of hardware every day but we have no idea how it works. Why does pouring water inside your toilet causes an automatic flush? It has something to do with a special tube, the siphon. Why does it matter in the process? By the way, there's even World Toilet Day. It's celebrated in November and is dedicated to the problems with hygiene in the world... Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
In case you haven't noticed, the evangelical movement in America is a mess. Some say we should let it all burn down. Others fiercely defend the historic and theological richness of the tradition. Dan Stringer says there's a third option that is honest about evangelicalism's failures, while also valuing its strengths. Kaitlyn interviews Stringer about his new book “Struggling with Evangelicalism: Why I Want to Leave and What It Takes to Stay.” Also this week, former Trump national security advisor Michael Flynn says the U.S. should only allow one religion. Happy World Toilet Day! It is that day of the year when we all need to overcome our embarrassment and discuss what is normally a taboo topic. Hundreds of millions of people still have no access to a toilet, putting them at risk of disease, sexual assault and public humiliation. Tamasin Ford speaks to the inventor of World Toilet Day, Jack Sim, about how much has been achieved since he founded his World Toilet Organisation 20 years ago to promote discussion of this topic. We also hear from Catarina de Albuquerque, who served as the first United Nations Special Rapporteur on the right to safe drinking water and sanitation, and made it one of the UN's sustainable development goals. Also, consultant Timeyin Uwejamomere talks about the challenge of introducing proper sanitation in the slums of his native Nigeria. Plus Chilufya Chileshe, policy director at the charity WaterAid, explains how the lack of a toilet leaves women and girls vulnerable to sexual harassment, and interferes with their education. It's World Toilet Day! Isabel Medem is the co-founder of Sanima, a social startup that took on the challenge of providing sanitation to Lima, Peru, a city where 850,000+ people are denied access to basic sanitation, something most of us take for granted every day. World Toilet Day aims to raise awareness of sanitation issues around the world. One in three people across the globe does not have regular access to a toilet. Unclean and unsafe toilets contribute to the spread of diseases like cholera, typhoid, and hepatitis. World Toilets generally remain inadequate for populations with special needs, such as the disabled and elderly. Toilets are an unspoken but necessary part of the sanitation process, but have you ever wondered about their history? --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

Hey Friends - The fun continues as we enter our second season of our podcast - 'In Other News.' Though, none of us know how seasons work in podcasts we decided since it's a new year, we might as well graduate to season two with new and improved content...and better mics (for some of us). Have you violated your New Year's Resolution yet? You're not alone. The guys discuss whether or not it's worth it to have a New Year's resolution. Then we take a trip down memory lane to our glorious days in television. You won't want to miss Axel's coverage of World Toilet Day! Yes, that's a thing. We may have saved the best for last as we go bilingual. That's right, the guys are learning sayings like, "Everything has an end, but a sausage has two." All this, and other fun stuff in our jam-packed, fun-filled first episode of season two! Listen and like! Follow us on Facebook at by searching @InOtherNewsPodcast and contribute to the discussion...it will make listening way more fun. Until next time, Adam, Axel and Joe
There are things in life that are inevitable: oven burns, occasionally being pooped on by a bird, JoAnn Fabrics coupons in the mail. Add to this list celebrating World Toilet Day on your educational/comedy podcast. Not since the Titanic Remembrance Day episode have we felt more like mere vehicles of a greater force working through us, guiding our every decision, joke, and flush. This National Podcast Day episode serves as a humble reminder that in these uncertain times, poop is a sure bet, and there are always toilets to be grateful for. Thanks to everyone who contributed to this episode: Alfred, Julia, Elle & Sean, Chris, Natalia & Paul, Erin, Kristie & Ian, Soren, Alden, Ellen, Kaelie, Gwen & Megan, Lance, and David.
It is 20 years since Jack Sim founded the World Toilet Organization, to campaign for better sanitation and hygiene. In 2013, the United Nations designated November 19th as an annual World Toilet Day. When he talked recently with Driving Change, we began by asking Mr Toilet, as Sim is affectionately known, about how he first got interested in sanitation, and about an influential meeting he had with Mr Condom.
