When you have a fatty liver, every other function in your body becomes compromised.  A fatty liver also means a fatty pancreas, and other fatty organs. This also means you have excess visceral fat! Fatty liver disease, also known as hepatic steatosis, occurs when excess fat builds up in the liver. While the liver naturally contains some fat, when more than 5-10% of its weight is fat, it can lead to complications. Fatty liver disease is generally categorized into two main types: Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD): Fat accumulation in the liver not caused by alcohol. Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease: Fat accumulation due to excessive alcohol consumption. In the United States, it is estimated that 10% to 20% of children have non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). The prevalence of NAFLD in children has been increasing, particularly due to the rising rates of obesity and metabolic syndrome. Among children with obesity, the prevalence of NAFLD is significantly higher, ranging from 30% to 50%. Approximately 30 years ago, in the early 1990s, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) was relatively rare in children, with an estimated prevalence of around 1% to 3%!!
