Preterm infants are at risk for a condition called necrotizing enterocolitis, which results in inflamed intestines, bacterial infection and damage to the colon and intestines. Without proper care, the infant may die.Pasteurized donor human milk helps offset these potential dangers. Unfortunately, some mothers of preterm infants cannot produce their own milk. That's where Mothers' Milk Bank of Louisiana steps in.As of August 2020, Louisiana provides Medicaid coverage for using pasteurized donor human milk in a hospital. In 2022, Louisiana legislators approved inpatient and outpatient coverage for pasteurized donor human milk. Listen as Dr. Ginsberg and I dive into the Milk bank of Louisiana and hear the powerful impacts it has on our community and state! All Things Conceivable: A Surrogacy Podcast with Nazca Fontes
Most shelves have infant formula, but is the baby formula shortage really over? Market research conducted in late October showed the shortage improved with 87% of store shelves having baby formula back in stock, almost 20% more than the low of 69% at the peak of the shortage. Yet some families are still struggling to find formula. Linsday Groff first learned about becoming a milk donor from a nurse while her baby daughter was in the NICU. Lindsay decided then she would donate her surplus of breastmilk for a year to help other babies like hers. Her full circle moment came years later when she took over the helm as Executive Director of The Human Milk Banking Association of North America that believes in a world where all infants have access to human milk through support of breastfeeding and use of pasteurized donor human milk. Lindsay joined Nazca Fontes on All Things Conceivable: A Surrogacy Podcast to talk about the infant formula shortage, where are we now and how you can help milk banks on #GivingTuesday and everyday. Inspired by their surrogates giving nature, ConceiveAbilities launched the #MilkBankChallenge in response to the infant formula shortage. Over 350,000 ounces of donor milk has already been donated to milk banks nationwide. Their #GivingTuesday goal is to reach 500,000 ounces by the end of the year. To put that in perspective one ounce of milk can feed one baby for an entire day-- that means their goal would be able to feed half a million infants for an entire day. That's a profound impact. Here are three ways to join the #MilkBankChallenge: Become a milk donor. Surrogates and other lactating moms are in a unique position to be able to donate their milk…a priceless gift to a family in need. To express our gratitude for the much needed donations, ConceiveAbilities is offering a one-time $250 gift card to milk donors. Make a financial donation. Milk banks are in need of supplies and labor to help meet the increased demand for donor milk. ConceiveAbilities will make a one-time match of your monetary donation to a non-profit milk bank of up to $250. Share this podcast and the #MilkBankChallenge. Spread our mission to help milk banks with your community Learn more about joining the #MilkBankChallenge Learn more about HMBANA Learn more about GivingTuesday

Just the minute you thought you knew something about human milk banking, you might find it’s time to step back and listen to Marie’s special guest, Kim Updegrove, CNM. Kim is the Director of the Mother’s Milk Bank at Austin TX and the Chair of the Standards Committee for the Human Milk Banking Association of North America (HMBANA). How has the COVID crisis impacted donations, either from the perspective of the donor or the staff? And is the COVID-19 virus released into the milk, and if so, can it be destroyed through Holder pasteurization? Is donor milk a “breastmilk substitute”, or not? Has HIV ever been found in milk dispensed from a HMBANA-accredited milk bank? Is the fee covered by insurance? Is milk dispensed only for critically ill premature infants? Does donor milk protect against premature infants developing necrotizing enterocolitis, or must it be mother’s own milk in order to offer such protection. Find out the answers to these and other questions on this episode!

ABOUT MCKENZIE: McKenzie has loved both food and science from a young age. In high school, her curiosity about the world meshed with her interest in food and led her to study Nutritional Sciences at Cornell, followed by a Master's degree in Public Health and Registered Dietitian Training at UNC-Chapel Hill. In graduate school, she discovered Health at Every Size - an approach to health that is weight inclusive and radically opposes diet culture. It recognizes that weight loss diets simply don't work and that all people in all bodies deserve respect and quality medical care. She also discovered Intuitive Eating - a tool developed by registered dietitians to help clients balance their eating and truly enjoy all the foods they eat by tuning into their inner signals. With these two paradigms, she began to heal her relationship with food and shift my views on how she wanted to practice as a Registered Dietitian. After looking at our thin-obsessed world through a feminist lens, and seeing the startling statistics of overall poor maternal health outcomes in the U.S. as well as health inequities for women of color, McKenzie knew where she was called to work. She now specializes in female reproductive health, working with nutrition for fertility, pregnancy, and postpartum. IN THIS EPISODE: McKenzie and I discuss eating for common discomforts of pregnancy, choosing a prenatal vitamin, intuitive eating, and weight gain in pregnancy. ABOUT NICOLLE: When Nicolle first became pregnant, she was very concerned about how difficult and painful birth would be and had no sense of how I’d get through it. The hospital-based childbirth classes instilled so much more fear in her that she became determined to educate herself further on normal birth. During the months that followed this blessed event, she was consumed with her birth story and wanted to share her experience with as many other women as possible.
