This week I am re-playing my interview with advocate, Substacker, and "summoner of women's audacity," Shannon Watts in honor of the fact that her new book “Fired Up: How to Turn Your Spark into a Flame and Come Alive at Any Age” released just last week. Shannon first entered that national conversation when she founded Moms Demand Action, the grassroots movement for common sense gun reform that began with a Facebook post the day of the Sandy Hook school shooting and has grown to include more than 10 million members. Shannon writes regularly for her Substack, Playing with Fire, and outlets like The Washington Post, Elle, Time, and more. She has also been named Glamour's Woman of the Year and one of Time's 100 Most Influential People.Since leaving Moms Demand Action, Shannon has been on a quest to motivate more women to use their voices to advocate for change, whether that's within their own families, workplaces, communities, states, the country, or the world. It was an honor to talk with her and we really broke it down, covering: - Knowing when it's time to transition out of what you've been doing- ADHD and how its effects have changed as she's gotten older- Switching gears from being a very public person who had to keep her private life private (to not feed the trolls) to a private person who talks about private things (menopause, ADHD) publicly- The incredible origin story of Moms Demand Action (or what I call, "the Facebook post heard 'round the world)- Her standing desk fail Thank you for listening! Roisin Wilson is business development director at HSK Gardening and Leisure, which is a specialist importer of 'Jurassic' plants from the Antipodes, specifically Dicksonia antarctica tree ferns from Australia. It is a tightly regulated activity, but Roisin explains that the tree ferns it imports from Tasmania are 'rescue' tree ferns that might be otherwise cast aside by loggers.Big plans are afoot at HSK and Roisin talks about the recent rebrand of the company and a shift towards "concept gardens" which takes inspiration from IKEA's approach to retail providing a "garden in a box" providing "instant impact, instant garden".These 'Jurassic' concepts will be retailed through independent garden centres and bigger chains, with a focus on educating them on the concept, how it works and how to sell it. Roisin feels it is an "untapped market" and the ideal way to reach reluctant and perhaps younger customers - "the gardeners of the future". She also believes there are opportunities to access new markets in Europe "and what was really interesting when I was at [IPM] Essen [in January 2025], there were no tree ferns, no big trees. There was one stand that had two tree ferns, but other than that, there were no tree ferns anywhere. And that was really, for me, that was quitestriking."HSK is also adding more species and took in its first shipment of Dicksonia squarrosa from New Zealand in Janaury 2025: "We are currently growing them on and probably will do a release of those in the summer once we know that they are all you know very very happy and growing beautifully in this country."As a relative newcomer to horticulture, Roisin gives her perspective on the sector. Upsides include the people-focus of the sector. But she highlights the need to promote women and encourage and develop young people and she celebrates the work of the YPHA in doing just that. In today's episode of the Data Center Frontier Show podcast, DCF's editors speak with hyperscale data center industry veteran Yuval Bachar, founder and CEO of hydrogen data center operator EdgeCloudLink (ECL). Bachar has held data center leadership positions with Microsoft Azure, LinkedIn, Facebook, Cisco, and Juniper Networks. He was a founder of the Open19 project, which creates open hardware designs for enterprise users, and holds eight U.S. patents in data center, networking and system design. During the interview, we asked Bachar about ECL's flagship hydrogen data center projects near Houston, TX and Mountain View, CA. He went on to outline ECL's future plans for expansion and sustainability in response to growing AI demands. Within the context of Bachar's forecast outlook for hydrogen data centers, DCF's editors also inquired about natural gas as a transitional power source and the challenges of natural gas infrastructure. With the AI boom is driving heavy interest in the upsides of hydrogen data centers, Bachar also took time to emphasize his company's ongoing commitments to sustainable data centers, as reflected by the industry at large. Our hydrogen production strategy discussion also touched on hyperscalers' intense needs for new energy solutions, before circling back around to sustainability in data center operations. Phased Development During our interview, Bachar said that ECL is expanding its hydrogen data center business with a focus on Texas, aiming for 100 megawatts in the first phase of campus development there and additional phases every six months. The company plans to complete four sites in the next four to five years, contingent on hydrogen availability and supply chain capabilities. He emphasized that the urgency for data centers to meet AI demand is critical, citing estimates of the industry needing 50 to 100 gigawatts of power in the next five years, while highlighting the importance of rapid deployment and sustainable practices. He further noted that ECL is positioned as a significant off-taker for hydrogen, influencing suppliers to invest in cleaner hydrogen production facilities. Bachar underlined his company's sustainability bona fides by stating, "We can deliver data centers which are fully sustainable right now." He noted that ECL aims to use a blend of gray and blue hydrogen initially in its data centers, transitioning to green hydrogen as production increases.

Tom welcomes Garrett Goggin, a seasoned financial analyst with expertise in trading and a strong emphasis on alternative assets like gold and silver. Goggin expresses his views on the current economic climate marked by the U.S. dollar's value erosion due to inflation and escalating debt. He regards gold and silver as reliable stores of value for future decades. Goggin further explores the significance of the yield curve inversion, which he believes signals an impending recession and market correction. In past instances, gold has doubled in value following a yield curve inversion and a subsequent recession. He anticipates that this trend will continue, possibly leading to another gold price doubling. Institutions are predicted to invest in the gold sector as its performance continues to improve. The conversation touches on the gold market's current dynamics, including the growing interest from investors that is not reflected in GLD shares outstanding but is visible in the growth of silver miners. The demand for silver exceeds production and existing stocks, potentially leading to a deficit and an escalating price surge. Central banks' role in gold prices and their correlation with rate cuts during economic downturns are also discussed. Goggin predicts that as inflation persists and economies decelerate, gold will remain a valuable hedge against economic turmoil. Garrett shares his philosophy for constructing a portfolio in gold and silver, focusing on analyzing companies rather than historical ratios or charts, emphasizing the significance of high-grade deposits and competent management. He advocates investing in inflation protection machines like royalties due to their fixed costs, minimal management, and potential for exploration success without being impacted by cost inflation. Smaller explorers and developers that can generate significant value through successful drill holes are also suggested. The conversation delves into the characteristics of mining companies that make them attractive takeover targets, with a focus on high-grade projects, low cost operations, and cash generation. Royalties are highlighted for their exploration upside and potential to significantly increase shareholder value over time. The NYSE was the economic heartbeat, its vibrant atmosphere pulsing with price adjustments following breaking news. Post-NYSE, Goggin joined a derivative arbitrage firm based in the UK and Ireland, marking his introduction to this niche trading strategy. However, his fascination lay in gold, silver, and commodities. In contrast to the unpredictability of longer-term investments, these markets offered a sense of control. Goggin's conviction was that mastery of commodity markets wasn't contingent on luck but knowledge. His quest for gold and silver took him across continents, visiting numerous mines and conversing with their overseers. For over fifteen years, he partnered with esteemed research entities Gold Stock Analyst and Stansberry Research, serving as a precious metals analyst. A respected figure at prestigious gold conferences such as the Prospectors & Developers Association of Canada's (PDAC) Toronto event and Denver Gold Show Europe in Zurich, Goggin is a preferred resource for leading gold and silver developers due to his insightful research. ...
Hi, I'm Sam, and I'm a perfectionist. I used to think I wasn't a perfectionist. After all, I tend not to focus on the details, and I often leave projects undone, let alone done perfectly. Then my therapist called BS on that, and because she is not only a licensed expert but also knows me better than anyone else - well, I listened to what she had to say. Once I became aware of my version of perfectionism - which is one of FIVE kinds - I saw my tendencies everywhere. Then this year I read a book that rocked my world: The Perfectionist's Guide to Losing Control by Katherine Morgan Schafler. Two things: First, listen in on my conversation with Katy - a fellow perfectionist, but with different tendencies. Second, if you feel like you too might be a perfectionist, read the book. Today, we speak to Johann Hari, author of the new book The Magic Pill. The new weight loss medications such as Ozempic and Wegovy have been exploding in popularity over the past couple of years. Unlike dieting, these drugs can cause rapid weight loss with seemingly little effort from the person taking them. However, they also come with a wide array of risks that don't often get discussed. What are the implications these medications have for people with eating disorders? Why are they associated with drastic muscle mass loss? Why are some scientists warning about their affect on depression? Obesity has many risks, but so do these medications. Today, we discuss the complex calculation posed by the new weight loss medications. Today is a very special day in the Do Good to Lead Well universe! The podcast officially turns 100. It is hard to imagine how far we have traveled together in a very short time. It is impossible to do justice to the amazing conversations we have shared together. To mark this very special occasion, I curated some of the most inspiring and thought-provoking insights shared by the CEOs, bestselling authors, and TED speakers I have spoken with over the past 2 years. I picked the clips that attendees most commented on during or after the live broadcast. My goal on putting this episode together was to provide a masterclass on self-leadership. After sharing these powerful clips, I'll provide my commentary, linking the threads together and connecting them with past guests. At the close of the episode, the tables are turned as Alan Mulally, the former CEO of Ford Motor Company and my collaborator on my latest book, asks me a question or two. I hope you enjoy this extended episode as much as I did putting it together. Things Discussed: Analytics: You have to know how they're made to understand their value. FPI is going to punish Michigan for having a much tougher schedule than Penn State. SP+ is made from scrubbing play-by-play data and roster data, and isolating what different factors mean. PFF is made from pass-fail grading. They are predictive up to a point, and then from there it's up to the analyst to understand how it applies to a specific team, e.g. defensive SP+ in the Big Ten West can't handle how bad B10 West offenses are, and measures that say 5-star quarterbacks in their third year of starting are good but not if they've spent that time behind one of James Franklin's OL. Craig Ross tells the story of the gangs of his high school, and Joe Blue Tony. Moral of the story: Jim Harbaugh wanted love, it was over when they pulled the plug on the TRO case. Sam: makes some sense. Seth: Michigan's mistake with Harbaugh is they decided to stay in the Big Ten and NCAA instead of joining the NFL, which has the Lombardi Trophy. Two-loss teams in the Playoff? Depends on who they beat, if they win the B10. I share my proposal for three showcase games to replace the Big Ten Championship Game. BRIEF SEGUE: THE SHOWCASE PROPOSAL Instead of a 1 vs 2 game for the championship we play the best three games that weren't played during the regular season. #1 plays the best team they haven't played, #2 plays the best they haven't played, etc. Where necessary the conference is allowed to make judgement calls so that there is always a *clear* champion after the games are played. The games are all played on championship Saturday in three major cities within the Big Ten footprint (New York, Detroit, Chicago, Indianapolis, Los Angeles, Seattle, Philadelphia, Minneapolis, etc.). Downside: it's another Big Ten game, not winner-take-all, although in many cases the #1 game will be winner-take-all. Upsides: three big games instead of one, opportunities to enhance resumes for six teams with Playoff hopes, no rematches, no weird Big Ten champions who finished behind better teams, lost to other teams, etc. Jaishawn Barham: Like adding a 1st rounder. PFF coverage score last year was bunk. He could be an NFL DE, a lot of his Maryland tape he's not the guy making the sack; he's the guy causing the sack. His versatility is what Michigan's wanted from the LB position all along. Think he's going to be a star this year then go pro. Is coverage more important than pass rush? That's what the Ravens were about. It's true in the NFL because the NFL puts most of its money into beating pass rush: QBs who read out everything and know what to do with the ball immediately, tackles to protect them outside, etc.
This week I am talking with badass advocate, author, Substacker, and "summoner of women's audacity," Shannon Watts. Shannon is the founder of Moms Demand Action, the grassroots movement for common sense gun reform that grew to include more than 10 million members who have helped pass over 500 gun safety laws across the country. She's also the author of "Fight Like a Mother", and her opinion pieces have been published in the Washington Post, Elle, Time, and more. Shannon has also been named Glamour's Woman of the Year and one of Time's 100 Most Influential People. And she's working on a new book about women in leadership that'll be out in the summer of 2025. It was an honor to talk with her and we really broke it down, covering: - Knowing when it's time to transition out of what you've been doing - ADHD and how its effects have changed as she's gotten older - Switching gears from being a very public person who had to keep her private life private (to not feed the trolls) to a private person who talks about private things (menopause, ADHD) publicly - Honoring the desire to have more information (and to share that information once you find it) - The incredible origin story of Moms Demand Action (or what I call, "the Facebook post heard 'round the world) - Her standing desk fail Visit Shannon at shannonwatts.substack.com. May 6, 2024: Laura O'Toole, CEO at SureTest joins Bill for the news. She propounds on a myriad of subjects rooted deeply in our current tech-healthcare ecosystem. As they probe into the AI labyrinth, could they be overlooking the persisting inaccuracies? How is the role of AI shaping up in data governance amid the accelerated pace of technology? Is the regulatory burden in healthcare stifling innovation or serving as the checks and balances for it? As they ponder upon these, they also deliberate the contentious issue of the FTC-led ban on non-compete agreements in terms of the nuanced needs of the industry. Episode 2471 - On this Friday's show Vinnie Tortorich welcomes Dr. Nadir Ali and they discuss a variety of upsides and downsides of GLP-1, autophagy, bineging, seed oils, and more. https://vinnietortorich.com/2024/04/upsides-downsides-with-dr-nadir-ali-epsidoe-2471 PLEASE SUPPORT OUR SPONSORS YOU CAN WATCH THIS EPISODE ON YOUTUBE - Upsides and Downsides Dr. Nadir Ali has been keeping a streak of riding his bike to work. (3:30) He sees benefits through managing food addiction with streaks. (7:00) They discuss overdoing exercise, with no rest. Some people have a fear of not getting back into it if they miss a day. Dr Nadir has a general rule that streaks can be beneficial as long as its not at the detriment of something else. Vinnie asks Nadir's opinion about Allulose & GLP-1 agonists. (13:00) Naidir has a lot of clinical experience, so he sees things on a day-to-day basis. Yes, there are benefits for some people, but there are a lot of downsides, too. Vinnie challenges some aspects of using a GLP-1. (24:00) Nadir agrees that it's only effective if a person does low-carb and intermittent fasting, (which is something Vinnie recommends without having to use the drug anyway.) (28:00) Additional Concerns There are upsides and downsides at certain levels of autophagy. (31:00) Too long of an extended fast can affect muscles. Vinnie asks Nadir about a low-carb, high fat being effective for weight loss and other metabolic issues. (36:00) There are instances where it may not be quite as effective. Are seed oils a detriment to health? They become a part of your cell membranes and do damage. (43:00) He gives an example of how it affects the retina. One single benefit you can do is to get seed oils out of your diet. Seed oils are ubiquitous in restaurants and included in most packaged foods. Binge eating - what can people do to help themselves? (53:00) Nadir has been looking into the pleasure centers of the brain in order to understand binge eating. Dopamine is the driver for the craving or behavior—but it doesn't really have much to do with the pleasure. In fact, as dopamine goes up, pleasure can actually decrease. “It's important to realize that yes, menopause can come with symptoms, but the symptoms are not alien symptoms. We've seen them before. We've seen them at puberty. We've seen them at pregnancy, if you've been pregnant. We've been there before. And I like to say that menopause is just another tune that we learn to dance to, right? We can do it. We will navigate it. The point is let's make sure that we have the right information, that we understand how it works and that we're aware of the solutions because there are so many women who decide how to navigate menopause based on information that is not unfortunately accurate, it is not up to date. So a lot of decisions are really based on fear rather than facts and then there's regret.” So says neuroscientist Lisa Mosconi, PhD, who currently has 11 grants—including four from the NIH—to study Alzheimers, menopause, and the female brain. Dr. Mosconi is an Associate Professor of Neuroscience in Neurology and Radiology at Weill Cornell Medicine (WCM), and the Director of the Alzheimer's Prevention Program at WCM/NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital. The program includes the Women's Brain Initiative, the Alzheimer's Prevention Clinic, and the Alzheimer's Prevention Clinical Trials Unit. There are many things to love about Dr. Mosconi and her work—one, that she's focused on an underserved group, i.e. women, but also because her insights dramatically expand the way we've been conditioned to understand these hormonal shifts in our lives. The picture she paints of the female brain is not only fascinating, but it's inspiring: As we age and move through stages, our brains continually remodel, becoming leaner, meaner, and more empathic. The female brain is…formidable. There are also many things we can do to make these turbulent transitions slightly smoother sailing, which we dive into throughout our conversation. Let's turn to it now.
