Martha Jabour was a young mum when her baby son Michael died suddenly. In the thick of her grief, she worried for the devastated young police officer who had come to her home that day, before he unexpectedly reappeared in her life (CW: this conversation discusses the death of a child).Martha Jabour has lived through the worst possible day for a parent. When she was a young mum, she put her baby Michael to bed one night, and by the morning he had died in his sleep. Michael was just 7 weeks old, and because his was an unexplained death, there were police on her doorstep, and a post-mortem, and an ambulance which took away her baby boy.At the time of Michael's death in the 1980s, not much was known about Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS).Martha threw herself into support groups, fundraising, and helping to change the story for parents like her, affected by the shocking and unexplained loss of their babies. Within a few years, research discovered more about the causes, and today rates of SIDS have fallen by nearly 90%.Martha trained as a grief and trauma counsellor, and her work with grieving parents saw her tapped on the shoulder to start a Homicide Victims Support Group. It was a job she initially said she'd only do for a year - but it became her life's work. This episode of Conversations explores SIDS, death of a child, grieving, grief, policing, community policing, motherhood, fatherhood, parenting, birth stories, sick children, sudden loss, cot death, trauma, shock, counselling, therapy, support groups, where to find support.Help and support is always available. You can call Lifeline 24 hours a day, 7 days a week on 13 11 14, or text them 0477 13 11 14.Red Nose also offers counselling services to parents who have lost a child. Their number is 1300 308 307.

Send us a textA phenomenal conversation with Riya Loveguard (@superstarseed on Insta, www.riyaloveguard.com) a practitioner of starseed understanding, ancestral trauma and an enforcer of humanity's sovereignty and self-empowerment unfolds in this episode of THE SOULFAM PODCAST with Diana and Lexi. Riya, whose starseed origins first began with light language activation, or consciousness technology as Riya calls it -- began when she was 17 years old at a Christian camp in her native Poland. She shares with Diana how her experience came full circle in 2020 when Mother Gaia connected with her at the sacred site of Uluru in Australia. At a similar time, Riya began receiving downloads from the Arcturian Council and her experience with consciousness technology grew. She has since grown in her understanding and use of that technology with multiple starseed groups (ie. Lyra, Andromeda and more) in such a connected way that she is able to help clients understand their own starseed origins and current Earthly experience...that often the two collide in work habits and experiences and relationships. In this highly impactful conversation -- that connects many consciousness dots -- Riya explains to Diana how she came understand on a deep level, how evident ancestral trauma can be in our daily lives, habits and thoughts. She and her mother both considered themselves scatter-brained in a congenial way, and were both diagnosed with ADHD. But as each person began to uncover their ancestral understanding, both mother and daughter began having the same dream about their grandmother who underwent enormous trauma as a midwife and healer in Poland during WWII when she lost a three month old baby of her own. That trauma - never explored or processed by their grandmother -- showed up as ADHD in both mother and daughter. When the trauma of their grandmother was cleared through their collective work, their ADHD disappeared. So many incredible nuggets of wisdom in this interview, Riya has much to share for clients around the world. Soon, in a six-month long group workshop, both Riya and her husband enable a select group of clients to journey through to their starseed origins and their ancestral origins for more clarity, understanding and to stabilize frequency. Riya feels frequency stabilization is absolutely necessary for individuals during these wildly shifting times as we simultaneously ground and reach for higher levels of consciousness and spirituality. In honor of Baby Loss Awareness Week this year, we revisit Sherokee Ilse's poignant journey. After experiencing the heart-wrenching loss of three babies—through miscarriage, a full-term stillborn son, and an ectopic pregnancy—Sherokee became a mentor for grieving parents, helping them navigate their deep anguish and despair. As a mother of two living sons and a pioneer in perinatal loss and bereavement, Sherokee has authored 18 books and booklets on loss and healing, including her most renowned work, Empty Arms: Coping with Miscarriage, Stillbirth, and Infant Death. With over 30 years of expertise, she has passionately spoken, trained, and consulted worldwide on topics such as miscarriage, stillbirth, NICU losses, sudden infant death, child loss, and general bereavement.A wonderful story I wanted to share about this interview is that it inspired a woman named Julie Reskakis to reach out to her, affirming that this was the work Julie felt called to do. After training with Sherokee for seven months, both online and in person in Pittsburgh, Julie recognized Sherokee's program as the gold standard in the field of perinatal bereavement. Upon becoming certified, she proposed a perinatal bereavement program at Holy Name Medical Center, aimed at supporting families through their loss and helping them create precious memories in the time they have together. Now a member of the staff on the Labor and Delivery unit, Julie feels honored to do this vital work. She emphasizes the profound impact of the podcast and Sherokee's wisdom, which have changed her life and the lives of the families she serves. Former UK nurse Lucy Letby has been found guilty of trying to murder another newborn baby. It adds to convictions last year that made her the United Kingdom's most prolific serial killer of modern times. The 34-year-old was found guilty last August of murdering seven babies and trying to kill six more while working at a Chester Hospital. She went on trial last month for a second time for the attempted murder of a baby girl after the original jury failed to reach a verdict. UK Correspondent Gavin Grey told Mike Hosking that when the verdict was read the parents gasped while Letby showed no emotion in the dock. As Long As I'm Living, rebuilding our Happier Ever Afters after infant loss (SIDS)
We are joined today by paramedic and autopsy technician Ephina Disinger and her coworker and friend chief deputy coroner Caroline Hanau. If you had told us 3 years ago that we'd be interviewing experts in infant autopsy after our sons' sudden deaths... well, we wouldn't believe you. But we can't tell you just how HEALING this conversation was, not to mention fascinating. Infants are not supposed to die. In this episode, we talk to Ephina and Caroline about the process of investigating why the death happened, whether there was foul play involved, and what it means for the rest of the family still alive. This interview is not for everyone. We have included an explicit content warning at the beginning of this episode, which we never do, because not everyone wants to hear about the ins and outs of dissecting a dead body. That said, Ephina and Caroline spoke with such reverence and grace for their role as the voice of the voiceless, the dead. They treat the babies who come into their care with dignity, love, and care. Please take good care of yourself and only listen if this interests you (as it does us), and remember that you can stop listening at any time. You can find Ephina on TikTok. ::: Follow As Long As I'm Living on Instagram at @aslongasimlivingpodcast, send us an email at aslongasimlivingpodcast@gmail.com, or visit us at anchor.fm/aslongasimliving! Martine & Stuart have their first child, Nathaniel, who was diagnosed with Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB), a rare, painful, and ultimately fatal genetic skin condition. Caring for a child with EB is an immense emotional toll on them due to the constant pain the baby suffers with basic daily tasks like feeding & changing diapers. This episode delves further into the contradictions and complexities of Mormon doctrine around reproduction which made it difficult for Martine and Stuart to come to terms with Nathaniel's condition. They felt guilt and self-blame upon his diagnosis, questioning whether it was punishment for wanting to wait to have children, or due to a "Saturday's Warrior" type pact agreed to in the pre-existence. The doctrine of pre-mortal decisions and the effects on disabilities was also discussed, along with the contradictory messages about disabled or sick children and those who die before accountability. As Nathaniel's condition worsened, the couple sought healing through priesthood blessings, but were met with disappointment when they didn't work. John discusses expectations vs. the reality of priesthood blessings and the theological justifications used when they don't work. The couple eventually came to accept the idea of letting Nathaniel go, and he passed away. Martine & Stuart describe the emotional aftermath of Nathaniel's death, including the funeral and how Mormons deal with death. Despite some trepidation, the couple decides to have another child, which was met with mixed reactions from their community. Martine became pregnant again and gave birth to a healthy son. They later moved to Louisiana, where they became involved in their LDS branch and had a third child, Sarah, who was also born with EB. The episode discusses the routine of care for Sarah and the support they received from their branch. The second death of an infant affected their faith, with Stuart becoming angry at God and turning down a leadership position in the church. Despite this, Martine still wanted more children, and the episode ends with the couple meeting with a General Authority to discuss the deaths of their children and birth control. A truely avoidable tragedy happens too many times every year across North Texas: Children die in their sleep. The biggest cause of this is often because they are sleeping in adult beds. Marisa Abbe, PhD from Children's Health joins us to talk about preventing this from ever happening with just a few safety precautions. Then, we focus on an aspect of heart disease that many don't understand. The term “Heart Failure” is broadly used to refer to the heart muscle not functioning at the level the body needs to provide proper oxygen that we need. Our guest is Dr. Jawwad Yusuf, Heart Failure & Transplant Cardiologist at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Dallas and a member of Texas Health Heart and Vascular Specialists, a Texas Health Physicians Group practice. His explanations of identification and treatment of heart failure are like a seminar in prevention and care of our heart.

Have you ever felt the prickling sense of a pair of eyes gazing at you from a place unseen? Are you able to instantly locate the sound of a cellphone ringing anywhere in your room? Do you sometimes see faces in the patterns of woodgrain or on a popcorn ceiling? And, most importantly, has a pink haired girl every broken your arm or hurled you from a building? If so, you may be entitled to damages. This month, to close out 2022 and our coverage of Chaos;Head Noah, Sara, Runa, and returning guest Meowgon dig deep to excavate the remainder of the main story, play through the alternate endings, and experience the true horror of the Noah experience: The Girls' routes. After following Taku's growing paranoia and increasing entanglement in the NewGen murder cases and the vast conspiracy surrounding di-swords and their wielders, we arrive with him at the top of a skyscraper overlooking the scramble crossing as he finally lays eyes on his own sword. A mild earthquake has somehow caused a record number of casualties, Nanami has been kidnapped, and Rimi has vanished as Taku stands above a crowd of thousands, looks out across the crossing, and reaches for the outline of a di-sword. Unfortunately for him, it will be almost four more chapters until he claims it. Chaos;Head Noah is a remake and update of the original Chaos;Head, originally released in 2008 and only now available in 2022 with an official English version. In this half of our coverage, we'll cover the last five chapters of the core game of Chaos;Head Noah, the additional Crying Sky ending, all of the Girls' Routes and their associated endings, and then the "Blue Sky" ending added to the Noah version, unlocked once you complete every other available ending in the game. After the earthquake that closed out Chapter 5, reports pour in of massive casualties with over 300 injured and over 100 dead, all from a simple 5.6 earthquake which centralized most of its damage exclusively within Shibuya. Taku, however, has far more dire things to worry about as Shogun has sent him a "present" - Nanami's severed right hand, still clutching her cell phone, and wrapped up carefully in a cardboard box. From there, things only get worse for Taku: A mysterious caller tries to force him to manifest his di-sword, his classmates sneer at him after he's humiliated on a live nationwide broadcast, more NewGen murders occur, Sena tries to kill him for inadvertently creating the formula that allows a mind control device to function, and worst of all he tries to go back home. In the end, no matter what path you take through the story, Shibuya lies in ruins. As a note to listeners who want to read along with us, Chaos;Head Noah is a horror game with a long list of graphic, disturbing, and potentially anxiety-inducing topics. While we mention a few of them in our episode, because of the wide variety of delusions present in the game and the breadth of content included, it's impossible for us to list all of the things that come up in even just these first 5 chapters. We encourage you to seek out a list of content warnings before playing. As always, if you enjoy our episodes, please rate and review us wherever you listen to podcasts! NOTE: This episode contains discussion of death, grief and stillbirth. Listener discretion is advised. There's a lot of reasons why Christmas and the New Year can be difficult, stressful and affect our mental health. Our guest for this episode is Kelly Scott, the current Victorian President of the Australian Funeral Directors Association and also its National Senior Vice President.Kelly is the General Manager of T J Scott & Son Funeral Directors based in the Macedon Ranges, Victoria – it's a family business, which was established by her great-grandfather Thomas John Scott in 1938. She works alongside her father John Scott, and brother Daniel and has been in the profession for more than 25 years.Kelly sees grief and loss up front and works with people during the most difficult time of their lives. We thought she'd offer insightful living experience of the how the Christmas and New Year can be a particularly tough time. And we were interested to know more about how funeral directors play a role in supporting individuals and communities. It's an area of support that may not be front of mind when we think about mental health and wellbeing. If you have been affected by anything discussed in this episode you can contact:Lifeline on 13 11 1413 YARN on 13 92 76 (24/7 crisis support for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples)MORE SUPPORTSANDS - miscarriage, stillbirth and newborn death supportSuicide Callback ServiceThe Australian Centre for Grief and BereavementOther Bereavement ServicesProduced and hosted by Emily Webb, ermha365 Advocacy and External Communications Advisor with Karenza Louis-Smith, CEO ermha365.ermha365 provides mental health and disability support for people in Victoria and the Northern Territory.Follow ermha365 on social media:FACEBOOK - @ermhaorgTWITTER - @ermha365INSTAGRAM - @ermha365ermha365 acknowledges that our work in the community takes place on the Traditional Lands of many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples and therefore respectfully recognise their Elders, past and present, and the ongoing Custodianship of the Land and Water by all Members of these Communities. We recognise people with lived experience who contribute to GET REAL podcast, and those who love, support and care for them. Online Course Click Here: Investigating Infant and Child Death Death Investigator Newsletter: Click Here for Newsletter Info. When it comes to all death investigations, but especially where an infant or child is involved, you should be led by the thinking that you only get one chance at your first chance. The trouble with infant death, more so than any other type of death, is the body is always moved from the place of discovery, making multiple scenes that need to be secured and looked at. The other issue is the delay in notification. Many times, because of this moving of the body, the infant is often at a hospital, and hours have gone by before law enforcement and coroner/medical examiners are notified. This delay also frustrates the investigation by putting potential evidence at risk of being lost forever by never being found. There are two areas of the investigation that need to be started as soon as possible; talking with the caregivers and inspecting the place of discovery. Caregivers, and anyone who found the child unresponsive, need to be talked to on the day of the death, not a few days later. Waiting may cause the caregivers to be reluctant to speak with investigators, even if they have done nothing wrong. The next first thing that needs to be done is an inspection of the place of discovery. Do an initial walk-through looking at the environment as a whole. What are the living conditions like, is the environment safe for a child? Look for fragile evidence such as blood, vomit, mucus, etc. on bedding and crib rails. Locate bottles, diapers, medications, and food containers for later collection. What room does the infant sleep in normally, and where were they upon discovery? Find out what the HVAC system is in the house and does the room the infant sleeps in have a different source. Be sure to photograph the entire house or environment as you walk through so you get the best representation of the scene before items are moved or destroyed. Again, remember you only get one chance at your first chance. Every other inspection or evidence collection after that can be tainted or at least claimed to have been by future defense arguments.

Genesis 39:1-23; Matthew 5:11-12 The Lord was with Joseph, who was a slave in the house of his Egyptian master. His master saw that the Lord was with him and that the Lord caused all that Joseph did to prosper. Later, when Joseph had been thrown into prison, the Lord was with Joseph and showed him steadfast love. The Lord was with him, and whatever he did, the Lord made it prosper. This week on the podcast we have part 2 of Addie's story featuring birth after still birth. If you missed last week, she shared all about her pregnancy and emergency C-Section with her first daughter, Sophie, who died shortly after birth due to what can only be described as negligence on the part of her labor and delivery team. If you haven't listened to that episode yet, it is an emotional episode but one that gives context to today's part of the story. Here in part 2, you'll hear Addie share about the birth of her rainbow baby, and then in her words, her pot of gold baby - an empowering VBAC after two previous C-Sections. Like I said last week, Addie is a fabulous storyteller and it was an absolute pleasure to have her on the show.
When a supposedly healthy infant passes away, it can be hard to understand why. Juan Lavista Ferres (Microsoft), Dr Jan-Marino Ramirez and Dr Tatiana Anderson (both from Seattle Children's Research Institute), and Professor Edwin Mitchell (University of Auckland), form the core of a novel collaboration to conduct vital and extensive research into the risk factors and mechanisms behind sudden unexpected infant death. This unique collaboration spanning across disciplines, industries and continents, is providing the deeper understanding that is needed to prevent unnecessary infant deaths.

If one of your older Bibles has maps in the back, you'll notice that this image doesn't match the Dead Sea in your Bible. That's because the water from the Jordan River is being syphoned off for irrigation before it reaches the Dead Sea. And as a result, Dead Sea is becoming "deader" for lack of water. It's become two separate bodies of water, one of which is disappearing. In this third shalom-makers interview, you'll meet a longtime friend of Hands of Hur and our family. Matt Letourneau has done more with his life in four decades than some do in a lifetime. He's an artesian well of innovation, vision and a passion for the gospel. Currently he's the CEO of NeverThirst, a ministry committed to bringing Living Water and clean water to the nearly 800 million people who need both. Now that's about as shalomic as it gets. Come with me on a journey that begins in the American Southeast and extends to Africa and Asia, and has all the evidence of God's anointing and the power of His presence.

Trigger Warning: Today Julie Sullivan, a Children's Minister with Waypoint Church, comes on the podcast and discusses an extremely difficult, but important topic of miscarriage. She starts by sharing her own journey with the loss of two of her own pregnancies and her healing journey, but goes on to discuss the importance of talking what you have experienced with the people that have earned the right to that story. Held by Hope is a ministry through Waypoint that walks with women who are struggling and provides not only support, but also resources for grieving for you and your spouse. Julie reminds us that shame and guilt are not truth when it comes to the grieving process and we have to combat those lies with the truth of the gospel and its healing abilities. She talks through what are things that are helpful, but also talks through things that are not helpful to say to friends as they are struggling to understand what has happened. This episode is not only for women who are recovering from a miscarriage, but for everyone to be better equipped to support a loved one who has experienced the devastating loss of a pregnancy. Please take the time to share this with someone who is struggling and needs the extra encouragement is a dark season of life. As a former news anchor, Sherrie Dunlevy delivered bad news on a daily basis. However, it was the news of a personal matter that would shatter her heart. Sherrie knew she would be delivering her son who would be born with complications and quickly swept away for medical care immediately after being delivered via cesarian. She and her husband would then spend the next 29 days holding their son until he passed away. The years that followed led her on a path of trying to understand why people abandon those who are grieving. And, set the wheels in motion of a journey that would lead her to write a book and doing everything she could for herself to not live the rest of her life as nothing more than a grieving mother. Wanting more for her life, she's found a way to live fully into who she was called to be, and even after the death of her beloved pet during the pandemic, learned the power of addressing and feeling the grief when it comes. Join Rachael and Lindsey Shipley of @lactationlink as they discuss Lindsey's journey as a mother of 3, bed sharing and misinformation regarding bedsharing/ breastsleeping, SIDS, and the infant feeding & sleep industry at large. Trigger warning: SIDS & Infant Death is discussed in this episode. Lindsey Shipley is an RN, Childbirth Educator, International Board Certified Lactation Consultant, cancer survivor, and mom of 3. After being a labor and delivery RN for 5 years, Lindsey saw too many moms feel scared and unsure when it came to breastfeeding. She overheard lots of differing opinions and conversations on “the right way” or “the best way” to breastfeed. It's no wonder moms can feel overwhelmed and unsure. Lindsey set out to change all that with Lactation Link! When her second baby was six weeks old, she was diagnosed with cancer and went through two years of treatment. With education and support, she was able to reach her own breastfeeding goals despite facing that challenge. That experience made her passionate about creating a breastfeeding resource families knew they could trust when they experienced challenges of their own. Through the Lactation Link online classes and support forum, she has created reliable, research-based information that is also easily accessible. She is based in Utah, but her customer base is everywhere because of her online classes and e-consults. Today our special guest is Coroner Darren Dake. We discuss his 30-year career in law enforcement including 20 years being a death investigator, and most recently his election to the position of coroner. Darren takes us into death investigations in detail. We discuss cases involving infants to senior citizens. Because of this, some may find this episode unsettling and disturbing, this is definitely an episode that is not suitable for children. Darren also explains how he and his investigators deal with the daily exposure to death and tragedy. He also sheds light on the potential problems that face those who are constantly exposed to these events. Darren and I also debunk common mistakes that writers make when dealing with death investigations.Listen to the Coroner Talk PodcastCheck out the Death Investigations Academy.Enjoy the Cops and Writers book series. Please visit the Cops and Writers website. If you have a question for the sarge, hit him up at his email.Come join the fun at the Cops and Writers Facebook group. In this week's episode, I had the deep honor of speaking with Rona Fernandez, a 2nd generation Filipino-American, about her grief journey and the death of her beloved daughter Naima. She highlighted ways that various "containers" can support our grief process (e.g., space, time, nature, ritual, writing, art, sharing memories, social media, meaningful support and connection). She also offered some specific examples of ways in which we can explore and cultivate our own containers, especially when existing structures are not in place or do not resonate with us. Rona reads an excerpt from her powerful writing, "The Ritual," and shares how holding space for grief is important for both individual and collective healing. We also talk about ways we can fully support one another in grief rather than bypassing or adding to the burden of each other's grief, including being mindful of "grief dumping" without permission, and finding ways to repair when we misattune or unintentionally hurt people who are grieving. Rona is an incredible light in the world whose work, writing, compassionate advocacy, and unbounded love for her daughter, Naima, continues to promote healing not just for bereaved parents, but for us all. The Joyful Mourning - A Podcast for Women Who Have Experienced Pregnancy or Infant Loss
Listen in to this honest conversation with my new friend Jasmine Wilson as she shares the story of her son Mekhi. Jasmine shares what it was like to deliver a baby and then lose a baby during this season of Covid. She gives candid answers about what this grief journey has been like in her daily life and how she chooses to remember, honor and celebrate her son. Jasmine talks about how baby loss and grief have affected her relationships, and what her faith has looked like throughout this devastating loss. She gives invaluable wisdom to a newly grieving mom when she shares what this journey has been like and I am sure you will be able to relate to the way she answered the question “what has surprised you about grief”? And one of my favorite moments of our time together was at the very end of the episode when Jasmine said: “Your baby’s life is just as important now as it was when you were expecting. It’s ok to include them in every part of your life.” Such a helpful reminder for us moms with babies in heaven. I really enjoyed my time with Jasmine and am sure her tenderness and honesty will be a blessing to you as well. One of the things Jasmine and I chatted about at length is reading through the Psalms or praying the Psalms when we don’t know how to pray anymore or even what to pray -- when our hearts are just hurting so badly. I put together a Psalm Prayer Guide for you, just a few of my favorite Psalms you can pray through when your heart is aching and you’re angry or frustrated or disappointed in God and not quite sure what to say to Him. Praying His Words back to Him can be incredibly healing. Download that guide at themorning.com/psalmprayerguide. Thank you for tuning in. I pray this episode blesses you and reminds you that you aren’t alone. Now let’s jump in.

Coroner Talk™ | Death Investigation Training | Police and Law Enforcement
Evidence in infant and child death cases is many times very different than in older children and adult deaths, infants die differently than adults, in most cases; so the evidence surrounding their death will be different. Understanding what potential evidence is is critical as well as knowing how and what to collect. Remember – If you think it might be evidence or lead you to a reason for the death – take it, you can always give it back. Personal Property v. Evidence Personal Property Is the property on or near the body that belongs to the baby (or decedent) and can be returned to next-of-kin. Evidence Is any material that may contribute to the cause and manner of death and is considered important in supporting facts of the case. What is determined evidence depends on the type and manner of death being investigated. Chain of Custody Every item secured from the scene, whether it is personal property or evidence to be processed – must be accounted for at every moment while in the custody of the investigative agency. Until such time that it is returned to the family or destroyed following court order when the evidence is no longer needed. Use a property log and ensure that every person handling or receiving the item(s) signs for it and can testify as to its integrity or secured storage. Photograph – EVERYTHING FIRST! Be sure that you have photographed and documented in your notes, anything you might be taking as evidence. Its placement will become critical in your final report. If the items had been moved by police, EMS, or family document the place you found it and note the move is you know it. Collecting Evidence Every item and material of evidence collected; must be identified, collect, and stored using proper methods. Different evidence has different containers it is important to store and transport correctly. Not doing so can cause evidence to become contaminated, chain of custody to be broken, or samples to be degraded beyond use Some Evidence in Infants Deaths to Consider Bedding, Bed, and Sleeping area Any OTC or Rx Medications for baby – Or in the baby area Bottles – those with milk and those in sink or floor empty Baby food – or whatever the child has been eating Diapers – toxicology testing Clothing – recent, might have changed child after finding Items used as weapons Anything that looks like it could be involved- in and around the infant area – you can always give it back later These topics and more are discussed in this week’s episode. In today's episode, our guest Diane Bingham, shares about losing an infant and raising her two daughters amid the reality of that loss. The beauty of her prayer and her connection to the earth and her spouse speak volumes. It was an honor to interview her, to know her child. I hope you will be honored as you listen.Anyway, Today’s episode is about the death of a child. It is tender. There are tears from me and my guest. It is beautiful and sad and profound and above all it was an honor to sit with my guest today. Please know though, that it might be hard.My Dad had 12 brothers and sisters. So growing up I had loads of aunts, uncles, and cousins. Now I have loads of aunts, uncles, cousins, cousin in laws, first cousins once removed so on and so forth. My Dad is the only one of his generation to die so far. He died 15 years ago when he was 51 years old.For my siblings and i we didn’t know if we belonged with his family. Were we still part of that side of the family if he was dead? Did we still get to be at things? Every family event was hard, emotional and fraught with our (or my) sense of not belonging.Maybe a decade or so ago my great big family started having a family reunion every other year. The first year that my siblings and spouses and such decided to go I had a hard time. My Dad’s siblings are reminders of the kind of person my father was (a good one) and a reminder of what I have lost.I have a hard time not being jealous of my cousins. On one hand I wish people would talk openly about how much it sucks he is dead and how awesome he was and also I wish someone would love me as well as my Dad loved me.Anyway, I remember being on the lodge porch at this state park having a family potluck meal. With a plateful of food I was trying to figure out where to place my body and my children’s bodies. Feeling vulnerable and tender and not sure where I belonged I ended up next to my Aunt Diane and my Uncle Mike. At some point in our chatting, probably about weather, I realized that they too knew what it was like to grieve. THey knew what it was like to walk into a family gathering and have your pain be in everyones awareness and no one’s discussion. I realized that they knew loss. In my accidentally bold way, I dove in- Tell me, I asked, “What was Justin like?” Justin, is my cousin. A dark haired little baby with a serious disposition, who was born in the spring of 1986 and died later that fall. I was young when he was born. In the years since i Have asked about JUstin, but moreover, I have felt a deeper sense of the way that grief is part of the unspoken grayspace in life. I have felt the way that people survive, mangage and sometimes even thrive all while carrying the tremendous load of grief with them. For today’s guest, all in while being accompanied by God.Today’s guest is my dear Aunt Diane. She is perhaps,of my Dads siblings the most similar. She is Justin’s mother. She is also the parent of Jill and Jennifer as well as the spouse of Mike. She is a farmer, a midwesterner, a white, straight, cis gender Catholic. The Joyful Mourning - A Podcast for Women Who Have Experienced Pregnancy or Infant Loss
Listen in as I talk with Lianna Davis about what life and faith after she experienced the death of her daughter Noelle. Lianna shares about the moments immediately following her daughter’s death as well as the weeks and months and years that followed. She talks about how her faith was challenged and how she has grown in her understanding of who God is as a result of having walked through death and grief. We discuss difficult questions that one faces when confronted with death, questions about the truth of who God is, His character and His goodness and His presence. And Lianna answers questions like “how could God use something this painful for His sovereign purposes? For good? How could He have a purpose for this?” She talks about a season of really grappling with whether or not all that she believed was even true -- exploring the thought that “maybe there are other possibilities besides Christianity maybe this isn’t really the only way and maybe i don’t need to hold so fast to these truths i have professed my entire life.” Listen in to hear how this wise woman reconciled those questions and in the end could say these words: “I just come back to the cross again, in the mind of the Lord that he would have such wisdom to turn such glory and such salvation from such a death -- that gives me the hope that He can do the same in our lives. That He can turn our pain into something that will ultimately bring honor and glory to Him.” Lianna’s knowledge and understanding of Scripture and theology is challenging in the best kind of way -- especially in light of what she has experienced. She trusts God and can say He is good even in the face of losing her daughter. If the Christian faith is something that feels foreign and unknown to you, or if you just aren’t at a place where you can say that “God is good” right now; I want you to know that I’m praying for you today and I think that while it may be challenging to hear or even believe this podcast episode has the potential to be very helpful to you. Know that I am praying for each and every one of you -- that God would meet you right where you are and remind you of His great love for you today. --- FREE DEVOTIONAL During out time together Lianna says “don’t let a season of doubt take you away from scripture”so if you are in a season where opening your bible feels too hard or it’s something you’ve never done before I wanted to make it really simple for you. I have a free 7 day devotional that I wrote specifically for women who have experienced the loss of a baby, 7 days of bible passages with a short devotion and prayer -- to download that free resource, simply head over to www.themorning.com/devotional And again, if you aren’t quite sure what to think about this christian faith or if reading the Bible isn’t something you have ever done before, maybe give this a try. It’s super simple way to be introduced to this faith we talk about so much here. On Episode 13 of Shattered Conception my guest is Marcella Johnson, founder of the non-profit organization, The Comfort Cub. The mission of The Comfort Cub is to bring comfort to anyone experiencing a broken heart as a result of a significant loss or trauma. We have all had our heart broken or know someone that has. Is there actual medical and physiological effects of having a "broken heart" or is it just a figure of speech? It turns out, this is a REAL "syndrome". Starting in 2001, more became known about Takotsubo Cardiomyopathy, aka a broken heart. First described in Japanese medical journals, it was named after the similarities between the LEFT VENTRICLE in systole and the shape of a Japanese octopus trap. It is also called "broken heart syndrome". Marcella shares her story of the death of her newborn son, George, due to a medical condition and the subsequent physical manifestations of grief and trauma in her body. She found comfort in holding a weighted flower pot...which gave her the idea to create a weighted teddy bear. It is in George’s memory that she first began to make each teddy bear by hand and personally deliver them to every hospital in her hometown of San Diego, CA. The Comfort Cub is now in top hospitals across the USA and is used on every continent to help to heal and bring comfort to a broken heart. While the initial intent of The Comfort Cub was for stillbirth, newborn death and child death, evidence shows it provides profound relief for ANY traumatic event. This includes having to leave the hospital while your baby is still in the NICU, the loss of a spouse, parent, loved one or pet. It has also been effective for occupational & autism therapy, adoptions and those experiencing divorce. Due to deep touch pressure, holding The Comfort Cub triggers the brain to release the neurotransmitters dopamine, serotonin and oxytocin, which causes the body to relax and feel comforted. The Comfort Cub has been scientifically proven to decrease heaviness in the chest & aching in the arms, as well as other physical manifestations of a distressing loss. If you would like to receive a Comfort Cub, email Marcella Johnson and/or contact The Comfort Cub organization. It may be hard to understand with hindsight, but for most of human history if we couldn't see something with our eyes it didn't exist. In the early 1840's, in Vienna, this worldview was put to the test when people began to notice that mortality rates during deliveries with doctors were significantly higher than with midwives in the same hospital. One doctor at this hospital, Ignaz Semmelweis, observed that the infection which had killed one of his friends after an injury was similar to the infection that most women suffered from that died as a result of childbirth in the doctor's ward. He surmised that the only way to eliminate the unseen contaminate was to remove the smell that accompanied working on dead bodies. To achieve this he required all doctors to begin washing their hands in a chlorine solution after handling dead bodies. Meanwhile, in other parts of Europe, Louis Pasteur and Joseph Lister were also contributing to their own discoveries in the microscopic world of germs which would revolutionize the field of medicine. This leads to a discussion on the nature of discoveries and whether or not we should expect true revelations in fields anymore or if all advancement is incremental. As with all great discoveries we also talk about the detractors. In this case, the biggest criminal is our own human faults. Why is it that despite over 100 years of research on the matter it is still so hard to get doctors to wash their hands? As always, no episode of Smog on the Nog would be complete without a dose of meandering conversation about the scale of time, was Thanos wrong, and how many Scientologists know about Xenu.
