EPISODE SUMMARY:Most people have never heard of a human milk bank. This is an opportunity to learn about a source of nutrition that just about everyone has experienced, but knows little about. Human milk is more than a source of nutrition, it is a medicine for premature infants who will not only survive but thrive if provided with human milk during their earliest days of life. Linda Harelick, MBA, DrPH, has a deep-rooted interest in social impact, shaped by her early experiences as a registered dietitian, which exposed her to the intricate interplay of environmental, cultural, and societal factors on individual potential. Seeking a shift into management, she pursued an MBA from Columbia Business School, a stepping stone to her role at Kraft Foods. Here, she managed strategic planning and marketing for renowned brands like Maxwell House Coffee and Post Cereal, culminating in leadership of Global Consumer Services. Eager to reconnect with health promotion, she attained a doctorate in public health from New York Medical College, propelling her to become Director of Operations and Communications at ChildObesity180 at Tufts University. In this capacity, Linda harnessed her managerial acumen and public health expertise to propel a startup nonprofit into a prominent entity in the fight against childhood obesity. Displaying an unwavering commitment to child and family well-being, she joined Harlem Children's Zone, entrusted with extending the successful Healthy Harlem initiative nationwide. Presently, as Executive Director of the New York Milk Bank, Linda enthusiastically spearheads the provision of pasteurized donor human milk to preterm infants and medically fragile babies, furthering her mission to enhance the health outcomes of the most vulnerable.Name of your organization:The New York Milk BankWebsite: www.nymilkbank.orgFacebook: @nymilkbankInstagram : @nymilkbankLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/the-new-york-milk-bank#breastfeedingisbeautiful #breastfeedingsupport #BreastfeedingLife Tune in for this sensible conversation at TalkRadio.nyc

Can eating apple peels be transformative for your gut health? That's a fun fact you're going to find out about today! Today we are diving into the world of gut health…as this is an ever growing issue amongst the entire population due to modern day food production, practices and ingredients. If you have ever struggled with gut issues, you know how terrible and hopeless it can feel. That's why you need to stay tuned to find out an effective gut reset protocol that will not only help mitigate and relieve your gut issues, but ultimately heal the gut and reduce inflammatory status in both the gut and the entire body. I'm joined by Dr. Alexis Cowan, Director of Scientific Content at Layer Origin Nutrition. She dives into three specific ingredients the gut reset consists of and why they are so beneficial for healing and how anyone can benefit from this protocol regardless of your symptoms. We also discuss the benefits of human milk oligosaccharides and why focusing on your gut health can help heal other systems in your body. Dr. Alexis Cowan is a Princeton-trained PhD specializing in the metabolic physiology of nutritional and exercise interventions. She works with clients to support them in all aspects of their journey to health, from diet and nutraceuticals to exercise and lifestyle. What we discuss: 00:03:05 The differences between keto, fasting, and high carb 00:10:35 The 3 ingredients of the gut reset protocol 00:17:48 The difference between probiotics and probiotics 00:25:45 Supplementing with Butyrate 00:32:51 SIBO and the gut reset protocol 00:37:20 How eating apple peels can be transformative for your gut health 00:44:59 The crowning glory of the gut protocol: apple peel powder 00:49:25 How inflammation affects different aspects of human health 00:59:18 Layer Origin and human milk oligosaccharides 01:01:50 Why it's important to focus on your gut health first Key Takeaways: Your gut health is connected to the health of every organ in your body, which is why it is so important to be proactive about your gut health instead of reactive. Human Milk Oligosaccharides (HMOs) were originally discovered in human breast milk, and they're known to feed specific species of bacteria in the gut, mainly within the family of bifidobacteria. The gut reset protocol can be used to optimize bifidobacteria and akkermansia, which can ultimately heal the gut and reduce inflammatory status in both the gut and the entire body. Often when there is an extra complication like an illness, a disability, or a rare disease, human milk feeding can be made more difficult because well-meaning care providers don't always provide the latest evidence based information. When early human milk feeding gets interrupted by outdated policies, this can have long lasting implications for the parent and the baby.Today's episode focuses on Diabetes, which is one such complication that often sets off a cascade of both prenatal and postpartum interventions that lead to prolonged breastfeeding/chestfeeding difficulty. This is a unique episode as it features both evidence based information presented by host and IBCLC Lo Nigrosh and an interview with Megan of Illuminated Birth who experienced breastfeeding as a person with Type 1 Diabetes. This episode features information about: Setting yourself up for baby feeding success if you have Type 1, Type 2 or gestational diabetes Research about preventing hypoglycemia (or low blood sugar) in the baby as a person with diabetes Hand Expression during the 3rd trimester to harvest colostrum in case it is need for hypoglycemia Information about milk making specific to people with Diabetes Information about formula content versus human milk content as it relates to blood sugar regulation The difference in blood sugar management between pregnancy and postpartum when the parent is nursingTo hear Megan's full baby feeding story, find it here.To hear Francie Webb's episode on Hand Expression, find it here.To hear the episode on Medications and human milk, find it here.Find Megan to be your doula, childbirth educator or birth photographer on her website. On today's podcast, we're going to talk with Molecular Biologist and Founder of Free to Feed, Dr. Trill Paullin (She/Her), about misconception in infant feeding and infant food reactivity. Dr. Trill is mother to two beautiful daughters who had severe infant food reactions to proteins transferred from her diet to breast milk. After processing the painful fact that she could hurt her children through breastfeeding, she started researching how to produce breast milk they could properly digest. Dr. Trill has discovered that many parents experience the same troubling situation. She has created a place for parents to find answers to their questions about infant food reactivity and empower them to reach their feeding goals. Free to Feed was born to provide the research, resources, and support she wished they had early on. They have started this mission by creating an annual subscription to empower parents through their food allergy journey, a tracking app built specifically for this space, personal consultations, as well as an allergy friendly post-natal multivitamin. Free to Feed's team is working hard towards launching an at-home test strip that will allow parents to analyze their breast milk for allergens. We talk about the misconceptions of allergy versus intolerance, what food reactivity actually looks like and how it occurs, and the common foods infants react to and how to remove them from human milk. Content Warning: fear of a child dying, a description of a serious infant food reaction with bloody diapers, and gendered language related to lactation.
