In his free time he loves playing baseball and spending time with his wife and three kids. Highlights from the Show Josh is a fourth generation Japanese American, with his great grandfather having immigrated in the late 1800s, and setting up an import-export business in Little Tokyo in Los Angeles The family lost everything when Japanese Americans were sent to incarceration camps during WWII Finding insurance the Japanese American community was next to impossible, so they started their own, and Josh's family started an agency, The J Morey Company, to serve the community, which he runs today Josh's story in taking over is similar to a lot of multi-generational insurance agencies, where the next generation may not be interested in taking over, can't afford to buy the business, or the business is no longer viable, which threatens the legacy of so many family businesses Rather than selling to another agency, Josh worked with a consultant to find a path to keep the business in the family despite not having the financing in place to buy the business That's what sparked the founding of Ori-gen, as a platform to continue the legacy of these companies It's not just about keeping the agencies going, but to support the communities that rely on these agencies in the way his ancestors and their communities needed each other after WWII Josh has also tried to drive more minority involvement in the insurance industry overall, which stems from his sense that this is the best industry and best country in the world That includes engaging the Asian and Pacific Islander community through AAIN (Asian American Insurance Network, where he's a board member), as well as partnering with other groups, like joining NAAIA and Ngozi Nnajiand her Black Friday efforts Josh advocates for DEI efforts because, without them, the industry will miss out on great talent and different approaches that only come from diversity within that talent This episode is brought to you by The Future of Insurance book series (future-of-insurance.com) from Bryan Falchuk. Episode #6 of Liv Louder is out!! I was beyond excited to sit down with the one and only Whitnee Dillard. She is the Director, Diversity & Inclusion for IIABA. I had been hearing her name in conversations as someone I "needed to know" for so long that I felt like we were already friends by the time we were finally able to connect. Try as she might to avoid the insurance industry, Whitnee's journey led her to the agency association world. Lucky for us, she brings a wealth of experience and passion for Diversity & Inclusion to her role at IIABA. She and her team work diligently to provide resources that help agencies find a starting point with D&I conversation in their organizations and make it a sustainable business objective. I enjoyed diving into this topic with Whitnee and feel like I learned so much in such a short time. There's a lot to take in with this conversation and I have a feeling we only scratched the surface. I know that as you listen, you will find that Whitnee inspires you to Liv Louder. If you've worked in restaurants, factories, hotels, schools, or other places before attaining your dream job, you're going to relate well to this episode's guest. William Jones is the editor-in-chief for Independent Agent magazine, the flagship publication of the Independent Insurance Agents and Brokers of America, Incorporated. But before he landed this position in October of 2020, he worked in all of those places. He's grateful for those experiences, however, because insurance is a part of every industry, and knowing first-hand the risks inherent in work in several industries has helped him better relate to members and what they want to know about through the magazine. We talk with William about why it's hard for writers to build a career. When the Internet makes it easy for anyone to publish their words, the supply of writers increases. But so do the opportunities to practice your craft and set yourself apart from the pack. We cover how Will went from writing stories for free for a soccer fanzine to becoming editor in chief of a publication that serves 38,000 independent insurance agents. We also cover how Will and his team heavily rely upon data to know how readers are responding to Independent Agent's content, and how essential it is to frequently survey readers to know what to talk about in future issues. IIABA is celebrating its 125th anniversary this year. And, the association has continuously published Independent Agent since 1903. There's a lot of tradition associated with a publication that established, but tradition will only get you so far. Will's routine for examining readership surveys, and studying click and impression numbers and visitor activity on IA's website is what keeps Independent Agent going strong in an era when many associations are decreasing the frequency of their print publications or ceasing them altogether. What does classic rock music have to do with COVID-19 and business interruption coverage? Nothing, actually. But that never stops insurance policy guru and When Words Collide policy author Bill Wilson from mixing up a little right/left brain conversation. A long-time educator and founder of Big “I” Virtual University, Bill is a staunch believer in “RTFP,” or “read the [insert a likely adjective here] policy” to truly understand what coverage you’re selling, buying, claiming or defending. And, based near Nashville, Bill is a decent guitarist in his own right. He describes his band and dives into the memory banks of his concerts – first, best, loudest, most surprising, and more. If you’re looking for a break from stressful COVID coverage, you’ll have fun with this recording, whether you know Bill or are hearing him for the first time. What’s on the minds of insurance carrier CEOs? Hear about that from industry insider Bob Rusbuldt, IIABA’s CEO. Listen as he outlines both opportunities and challenges around “the two Ts,” or technology and talent. Carriers also are concerned about the rapid pace of M&A activity in the independent agency system. Large insurance organizations such as Brown & Brown and Gallagher were the acquirers 20 years ago; today, there are myriad private equity and venture capital firms in play, and these “names you’ve never heard of” could be a long-term issue for the system, carrier execs say. Regional carrier execs are concerned about the proliferation of networks, aggregators and clusters, Rusbuldt adds. But while change is difficult for the industry, “The status quo is not acceptable from either the agent’s or carrier’s side,” he says. “There has to be constant evolution in the marketplace, or the carrier or agent will not survive.” Rusbuldt also comments on Nationwide’s “very exciting” move to 100% independent agent distribution. To wrap up, he reviews implications on agents and brokers of looming federal legislative issues, including tax reform. We are looking at these “Times of the Young Agent” and for this episode, we are proud to have, for the first time ever, an interview with a dynamic duo: Lisa and Will Lemanski, owners of Meiers, Lombardini, and Lemanski Insurance in East Lansing Michigan. We are also proud to interview Lisa Lemanski who was just awarded National Young Agent of the Year by the IIABA this past weekend in New Orleans. Their advice as young agents couldn’t have come at a better time. These are agents who are turning the perception of insurance, insurance agents, and the insurance industry to meet today’s conscientious consumers. They view themselves more as educators and counselors of insurance rather than sales people and they’ve cut out all the fat; meaning all the things that were a waste of time and a waste of marketing dollars. Listen to the podcast to see how you should be spending these resources.
Inspired by the Pocket and Summary Guides recently published by ACT,the Mass Agent Now Podcast talks to two of the individuals who helped create these agent resources. Welcome Ron Berg, Executive Director of the Agents Council on Technology (ACT) at IIABA and Steve Aronson, local Mass Independent Agent, President & CEO of Aronson Insurance in Needham, who serves as the Security Issues Chair on ACT. Steve and Ron were kind enough to answer the following questions in short time we had together. 1. We know it’s a threat to big box retailers and national banks...but is cyber security a real threat to independent insurance agencies - most of which are very small businesses? What are "hackers" looking for and are they finding it in small businesses? 2. Can you tell me briefly what ACT is and what the these resource guides have been designed for? 4. If you feel like your agency is in compliance with existing regulations like the MA laws, HIPPA, and Gramm-Leach-Bliley...is that enough? 5. For those that haven’t given this much thought yet….Where should agents start when getting their data security house in order? (general education, strong passwords, internet policing, virus protection software, eliminating personal devices?) Steve and Ron both share the most helpful resource they think that is listed in the guides. Resources Discussed in this episode: ACT: Agents Council for Technology ACT's Planning & Security Section Pocket Guide Summary Guide Mintz-Levin - State Data Security Breach Notification Laws ID Federation / Signon Once (Password Protection)
