In this episode, Lisa and Sharon discuss:What sets the Birkman Method apart is different from other assessments for college and career clarity. How your teen can use the Birkman as a starting point to understand themself - not just academically, but also to their environment and others. How narrowing options can increase confidence and lead to more satisfying career choices. Why focusing on the “next first step” rather than a “forever future” can ease the pressure when planning for college and beyond.Key Takeaways: Birkman is unique because it pinpoints the motivations behind behaviors without burdening students with multiple questionnaires. Our needs and expectations are like the roots of a tree - they ground us and influence our personal health and well-being.Things you enjoy during personal time are just as crucial as work for long-term fulfillment. The Birkman system funnels all career possibilities into fewer select paths so your teen has options that are most likely to work for them. “It's a broad world out there of career opportunities. If you look at your top three or four percentiles of interest, those are going to be excellent cues about a healthy direction for you to head, whether it's something that you do on the side that makes you happy, or whether it's included in your day job.” – Sharon BirkmanEpisode Reference: Is now the right time for your teen's College Major and Career Planning? flourishcoachingco.com/quiz About Sharon Birkman: Sharon Birkman began her role as Birkman International's President and CEO in 2002, becoming Chairman in 2022. New Solo Format from time to TimeCelebration:I'm excited to announce that my new book, The Reset Mindset, was released Tuesday and was ranked #26 on USA Today's National Best-seller list and #1 in 3 categories on Amazon, including organizational change.Today's focus: The Reset Mindset and Reset Moments to Finding Strength during Impossible Times Supporting Childhood Cancer Awareness MonthThere are some life experiences so challenging, so painful, that no shift in perspective or boost of energy will change the reality of the situation. A terminal diagnosis, the loss of a child, or other profound losses do not respond to the same kinds of adjustments that everyday challenges might. In these deeply painful, "impossible" situations, it can seem like no mindset shift or practice could make a difference. And yet, the Reset Mindset, specifically Reset Moments and Reset Practices, offers subtle but meaningful tools that can help navigate these heartbreaking experiences. The idea behind the Reset Mindset isn't about fixing or changing what can't be changed—it's about creating space to find meaning, peace, and resilience, even in the face of overwhelming hardship. Here's how Reset Moments and Practices can help in impossible situations.Sometimes, a Reset is not a Fresh start or new beginning, but it provides space for acceptance, deeper meaning, and to to determine what's next.Links:Get The Reset Mindset: https://pennyzenker360.com/the-reset-mindset/Supporting Childhood Cancer Awareness Month- Alex's Lemonade Stand FoundationHelp me surpass $20K for childhood cancer: Direct donations here: https://www.alexslemonade.org/2024/the-reset-mindsetLove the show? In this episode, Golden Harper, creator of the Altra Running Shoe will be discussing several topics that will make you a faster, healthier, and happier runner. This episode covers…Golden's running story and how he ran his first marathon at age 10The importance of mindset and happiness to sustain running long term The 4 key principles to perfect running formHow it led Golden to creating the Float Harness What a zero drop shoe isThe 4 components of a shoe that will keep your feet strongHow and why Golden created the Altra Running ShoeGolden Harper is the creator and founder of Altra and P.R. Gear. He is a foot health, footwear, and running biomechanics expert with several decades of hands-on experience working in these fields. Golden studied Exercise Science at two Universities, where he was particularly focused on biomechanics, kinematics, and coaching. During this time, he authored several research articles on running-related injuries and running technique. Golden grew up in the footwear industry, with his Dad working for Nike and Saucony most of his childhood, and his mother being a sponsored athlete as well. His family opened a walking and running specialty store when Golden was 9, and he started working there right away. He began managing the store between high school and college, and came to the realization that when it came to footwear, most of what they were doing was not effective or scientifically based. Given that nearly all shoe store ‘training' is propaganda from shoe companies, Golden set out to do the ‘Foot Health and Running Injury Major' in college. Between the ages of 10 and 14, Golden ran 5 marathons, debuting with a State Record 3:08 performance. He followed that up with a 2:57 performance that was good for a National Best for age 11. At age 12, he ran the St. George Marathon in 2:45, setting a world best. He went on to win 2 Cross Country State Championships and became a Cross Country All-American when he and several others all broke the previous national championship record at the Footlocker Cross Country Championships. His Senior year of college, Golden nearly went undefeated at collegiate distance Cross Country races. Golden has run professionally after college, winning Ultra-marathons and many mountain races. He is a downhill specialist and holds descent records on mountains all over the rockies, including Mt. Timpanogos in Utah and over a dozen 14ers in Colorado. Ep 57 | Men, Sex, & Testosterone with Dr. Adam Brockman Testosterone. It's one of the key hormones that drives some masculine behaviors, such as sex drive and libido. What many don't realize is that testosterone plays a key role in many other factors—muscle tone, belly fat, energy and motivation levels, and sleep. For the last 60 years, testosterone levels have been decreasing for men of all ages, and now many men are now seeking help for low testosterone (or low T). Most men hold a lot of shame when it comes to low testosterone levels as if they have to check their man-card at the door when this topic is brought up. For most men, sexuality and virility are deeply intertwined and any hint of dysfunction or waning testosterone levels is frightening and embarrassing. Many times, it leads to a diminished sense of self-worth and low self-confidence. In this episode, Kim is joined by natural health physician and chiropractor, Dr. Adam Brockman. Dr. Brockman de-mystifies the idea of “being a man,” while helping us understand that low T is much more than low sex drive and libido. He explains the reasons for low T and how men experiencing this are far from alone in their struggles. Dr. Brockman provides both natural and scientific ways to increase wellness and vitality. Kim and Dr. Brockman dig into the benefits of having optimal testosterone levels and how it begins with a simple blood test. They also get into brass tacks advice on what you can do to raise your T levels naturally and when you should visit a doctor for testosterone replacement therapy. Tune in to learn… What testosterone really is and how it functions in the body. Why testosterone steadily decreases with age. Common symptoms of low testosterone and the impacts of low T as men age. Demystifying men, sex, and testosterone. What causes erectile dysfunction in men as early as their 20's. How to increase testosterone levels through natural supplements, and other options if supplements aren't enough. The various benefits of optimal testosterone levels. What you can do as a significant other to support your man. “It's normal for testosterone levels to begin to decrease as men age. Good Morning it's Saturday June 12th, and this is The Wenatchee World's newest podcast, Slices of Wenatchee. We're excited to bring you a closer look at one of our top stories and other announcements every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday. Today we're remembering the life of Dave Riggs, a former Wenatchee World journalist who went on to become a beloved and inspiring teacher and journalism adviser at Wenatchee High School. This episode is brought to you by Equilus Group Incorporated. Equilus Group, Inc is a Registered Investment Advisory Firm in the states of Washington, Oregon, and Idaho. Dave Riggs, a former Wenatchee World journalist who went on to become a beloved and inspiring teacher and journalism adviser at Wenatchee High School passed away recently. He had been diagnosed with spinal cancer. He leaves his wife Dee and daughter Anna. Both Dave and Dee worked for many years in the newsroom here. Dave logged 27 years and Dee worked for the newspaper for over 40 years. He started out as a sportswriter, then went on to work on the copy desk. Later, he took a mid-career detour into teaching. Dave was a great guy to have as a colleague. He had a terrific work ethic and came to work with a great attitude and a fabulous sense of humor. But when he chose to become a teacher, it was clear Dave found his niche. He taught English and was adviser for the Apple Leaf student newspaper and WaWa yearbook. During his four-plus years as an adviser, the newspaper earned national and state recognition for excellence. The Apple Leaf won two Pacemaker Awards for journalistic excellence and the paper placed in the top 10 for National Best of Show for four straight years. Then, in 2016, Dave was awarded the Fern Valentine Freedom of Expression Award from the Washington Journalism Education Association. His drive to tell important and sometimes difficult stories gave his students the inspiration to stretch themselves. Dave was a terrific mentor. He consistently stood up for the rights of student journalists to take on stories that were sometimes controversial but needed to be told. Dave and Dee both distinguished themselves as journalists and colleagues at this newspaper. Our hearts go out to the family in this difficult time. Dave's certainly going to be missed. - Next, we're excited to announce that COVID-19 vaccinations continue to tick upwards. We're about 7,000 vaccinations away from the 70% goal. The incidence rate in Chelan County has remained in the 80 new cases per 100,000 people range throughout early June. The state still plans on fully reopening the economy on June 30 regardless of the incidence rate. But if the hospital ICU capacity statewide ever reaches 90%, then activities will begin to get restricted once again. As of June 7, state ICU capacity was at 81%. Around 97% of new COVID-19 hospitalizations at CWH in the last couple months were people who had not been vaccinated. Now, some history… The Beecher Hill House was built by Samuel P. Beecher. Sam came to the Wenatchee Valley in 1894. He worked for a time as a stonemason and subsequently planted the first sizable orchard in the Upper Valley. Mr. Beecher was a man of many interests and accomplishments. He attempted an ascent of Mt. McKinley in 1906, engineered some of the first irrigation systems in the Valley and was a skilled artist and sculptor. Beecher Hill House was built during the period of 1909 to 1913 as a testament to his vision. Electricity was not yet available but the house was wired for power. The hardwoods, stonework and advanced features made the house an early landmark. Mr. Beecher's attention to detail and artistic eye extended to the formal grounds. In its hey-day, Beecher Hill hosted many notable visitors. Sam's acquaintances reflected his varied interests. Queen Marie of Romania was a frequent visitor in the 1920's as were Sam Hill, Wiley Post and Howard Hughes. In 1939, a lawsuit was initiated by the Leavenworth State Bank over the disputed collection of outstanding loans. Sam's confidence in his innocence led him to act as his own attorney, battling for twelve years and culminating in a Supreme Court decision. Unfortunately, Sam was not successful in his defense and lost the property in the early 1950's. Sam died in September of 1957. Thanks for listening. Wars cannot be won only on the battlefield. Jake Harriman realized this truth while completing 4 tours as a Marine. During his service in the Middle East, Africa + Asia, he saw how extreme poverty caused desperation which directly fueled the growth of terrorist groups. After completing his service, Jake started NURU International to address the extreme poverty in war-torn countries -- and in doing so, combat terrorist groups. Jake has been honored as the Unsung Hero of Compassion by the Dali Lama, the White House Champion of Change + named one of the top 100 Most Intriguing Entrepreneurs by Goldman Sachs. Today, Jake joins us to share his passion for serving, entrepreneurial brilliance + genuine heart. Jake gives new depth to the idea of "living inspired." Join us. SHOW NOTES: Learn more about Jake's work with NURU International here. "It's not fair that the GPS coordinates of someones birth place dictates what choices they have in this world." - Jake Harriman The humble leader will always be able to persevere. When the cause is just and right, there is no turning back. What is one way we can each choose to move towards unity in our country? Build a bridge to meet others where they are. Listen. Find someone who has the exact opposite political views that you do. Sit down with them. Have a cup of coffee. Listen and get to know them. Don't wait until they pause so you can make your point. Sometimes you are going to fail. Pick yourself up + get back in the fight. There is strength that comes from failure. JAKE HARRIMAN'S LIVE INSPIRED 7 1. What is the best book you’ve ever read? The Bible. 2. What is a characteristic or trait that you possessed as a child that you wish you still exhibited today? Dreaming! I could dream big. I tried to do crazy stuff as a kid. We made a potion out of crayons and dirt to make me fly. Then, I put on a cape and jumped into cow manure! 3. Your house is on fire, all living things and people are out. You have the opportunity to run in and grab one item. What would it be? A medallion that I carried in combat. It says: [Joshua 1:9] "Be strong, courageous and remember that the Lord your God is with you wherever you go." It sealed my faith + gave me courage. I gave it to the love of my life when we got engaged. When she has to go into dark places, I wanted her to have the same medallion with her. 4. You are sitting on a bench overlooking a gorgeous beach. You have the opportunity to have a long conversation with anyone living or dead. Who would it be? Abraham Lincoln. I'd ask: How in the world did you get through that time? And hold everything together with a nation that was literally pulling itself a part? I think he'd say "Find commonality - there are threads and values that run through all of us. Get back to those basics." I think that is what he did and succeeded. 5. What is the best advice you've ever received? Never say you can't do something, you have to believe in yourself and those who love you. 6. What advice would you give your 20-year-old self? It's going to be dark. You are going to have a lot of really horrific moments that you didn't even know were possible. But in those moments, know that there is light coming. There is truth and love in people in this world. There is more light and hope than darkness. Never forget that. 7. It’s been said that all great people can have their lives summed up in one sentence. How do you want yours to read? He learned to love and learned to leave by serving others. *** If you enjoyed today’s episode: Subscribe, rate & review on iTunes or wherever you get your podcasts. Mondays in November, I'm releasing a special, Ask John episode. During this season of gratitude, I thought it would be a fun way to say thank you, answer your questions + shine a light on YOU, our wonderful Live Inspired Community members. Today's question was submitted by Mary from Missouri. She finds the podcast to be counter cultural and that it is good news in a negative news culture. Her favorite episode was with Sue McCollum, a strong woman sharing strong ideas of overcoming and doing great things. Mary's main takeaway from the show is that her experience and circumstances do not define her. Mary asked: How do you stay energized, committed + motivated with all of the different areas of your life pulling you in different directions? Tune in for my answer! *** If you enjoyed today’s episode: Subscribe, rate & review on iTunes or wherever you get your podcasts. See you here next Thursday (and Monday during November!)! Today Jason Kotecki, artist, speaker + author, is here to help us combat what he calls adult-itis, or being stressed out, boring and no fun. Jason will help us rekindle our childlike spirit. Join us to harness the magic of being a kid + see the benefits it could have in your work and life. SHOW NOTES: "Enthusiasm is important because it gives you the energy to start + overcome early failures." Growing up, it's so important to have people who believe in you. Notice something good about him + tell him about it. Every once in a while, we need someone to tell us what we are good at. It's amazing what you can learn + how quickly when you try something new you are interested in. Get a tinker project. You don't need a reason, sometimes your heart has a reason to do something that your head doesn't yet understand. Do something that sounds fun; let it naturally rekindle some of your curiosity and playfulness. Tinkering - work on something in an unskilled or experimental manner. As adults we're too afraid of looking silly. Be willing to experiment and not put pressure on the out come. Just because you fail doesn't make you a failure, it makes you human. that is how you grow. Give yourself permission to try little things + see where they go. To make a difference you don't have to be superhuman, you just need to be brave + courageous 20 seconds at a time. As adults, we don't want to look foolish or silly and it really limits our potential. How can we breath joyful vibrancy into our lives when we are feeling beat down? Think back to something you did as a kid, that you loved. Buy a pack of baseball cards, go into an old candy shop with $10, watch Scooby Doo - whatever. In 1987, John O’Leary was a curious nine-year-old boy. Playing with fire and gasoline, John created a massive explosion in his home and was burned on 100% of his body. He was given 1% chance to live. This episode will challenge you to ask yourself, "What more can I do?" as the legendary Hall of Fame announcer, Jack Buck, asked himself after seeing John in the hospital for the first time and fearing that he would not see him again. You will not want to miss this as John takes us through his mindset and the importance of faith in overcoming adversity and trauma, including how to use it in a manner that brings out the best version of ourselves. You will learn why John finds it so important to journal on a daily basis and a simple question to help you start. This epic story of survival was first showcased in his parents’ book, Overwhelming Odds, in 2006. Originally printing 200 copies for friends and family, his parents have sold 70,000 copies, most in back-of-room sales at John’s speaking events. It was this book that first invited John to embrace his miraculous recovery and share it with the world. John inspires nearly 75,000 people at 100+ events each year. He speaks to companies and organizations across industries, such as: sales, healthcare, business, safety, marketing, financial services, faith, education and insurance. Rich Donnelly spent three decades as a major league baseball coach. This was his dream since he was a little boy. In attaining this dream, he set everything else in life aside, including his marriage and children. Today, Rich shares how the news of his daughter's terminal disease shook him out of his detrimental focus on success and how he's been driven to lead a life of significance since. Ever wonder if people can change? My friends, this episode is for you. SHOW NOTES: Get your copy of Rich Donnelly's new book The Chicken Runs at Midnight here. Don't be average. You were put on earth to inspire and help people. Thank God I had cancer. It strengthened me. My son gave his life to save a strangers life. I lost a son but I gained a grandson, the woman is naming her son after Michael. I've had a lot of storms in my life, but I've also had a lot of sunshiny days. The storms taught me to not waste the sunshine. The average age is 80, so I hope I've got about 3,000 days left. I don't waste a day; try to do something good everyday. What is your encouragement to people going through a storm? It's not going to happen over night. It's going to be a step by step, hour by hour, process. Go out and do the best you can. If you're fortunate enough to have a family, a wife, kids: Be good to one another." "We are on a super highway and we are flying right past our family and friends. Stop and take time to notice, care, speak." Thank people by passing on their goodness to someone else. Don't put value on material things. They're just temporary wins. Everybody's favorite 4-letter word today is "busy." But ask yourself: What's really important? Are you making time for it? Tonya Dalton's company InkWELL Press empowers you through productivity to live your best life. Tonya will be our guide in learning how to do more with less at work and at home. And, most importantly: Forget "busy" + get ready for space to do what you truly love. SHOW NOTES: Get the first chapters of John's #1 National Bestselling book ON FIRE for free here. Listen to Tonya interviewed John on her Productivity Paradox Podcast here. Productivity is not "doing more" it's "doing what's important." We're so busy we feel like discovery is a luxury. But discovering what our passions are + what brings us joy is important. Our lives should be at the center; systems should work around them. Discover what is important + create a productivity system that works for you. Check out InkWELL Press courses, trainings and podcasts to help facilitate the best life you could possibly have, here. We think in order to grow we have to add, but often if we cut, it allows us space to create what is truly amazing and important. We often confuse urgent with important. What's important? Things tied to vision, mission, goals; things essential to you. We cram our days so full! We don't realize we're choosing that life for ourselves. You choose how to fill your day. Stop and ask: Is this what I want to do? How I want to spend my time? Relationships are built on conversations. Make time for them. It feels unschedule-able, but in our heart it's most important. Life ebbs and flows. There will be times when happiness is a really hard choice to make. Remember, lightness always comes after the dark. Take a good look at your life + where you spend your time. Identify where you spend time mindlessly (likely in between activities). Recoup that time to end your day happier. If you enjoyed our discussion about "productivity" check out ep. #5 with Rory Vaden to explore "discipline." TONYA DALTON'S LIVE INSPIRED 7 1. What is the best book you’ve ever read? Jane Eyre. I read it every year. It brings me back to my English studies roots and love of writing. 2. What is a characteristic or trait that you possessed as a child that you wish you still exhibited today? I see it in my daughter! That feeling of self confidence. You just don't care what anyone else thinks. I hope to foster that into her even in adulthood. 3. Your house is on fire, all living things and people are out. You have the opportunity to run in and grab one item. What would it be? I love this! It boils down to priorities and that is what I talk about all the time. I have some pictures from my wedding and when my kids were born. Those are really important to me. 4. You are sitting on a bench overlooking a gorgeous beach. You have the opportunity to have a long conversation with anyone living or dead. Who would it be? The conversations my husband and I have keep getting better and better (we've been together for 20 years). If I could spend the whole day with one person, I would pick him. 5. What is the best advice you've ever received? Be yourself. Be true to who you are and never lose sight of it. Hold fast to what is important to you, morals, values, ethics. I couldn't do a project that I wasn't 100% proud of. I love going to bed at night feeling proud of what I do. 6. What advice would you give your 20-year-old self? It gets better. You think in your 20s that life is great, and it just keeps getting better and better! Because the longer you are with yourself, the better you get to know yourself and the more time you take to really delve into who you are, the more in love you can fall. 7. It’s been said that all great people can have their lives summed up in one sentence. How do you want yours to read? She taught people to live with priority all while keeping her own at the center. *** If you enjoyed today’s episode: Subscribe, rate & review on iTunes or wherever you get your podcasts. What makes someone superhuman? Is it their cape? Their blue tights? Their ability to fly, jump or leap? My guest today was curious about the subject and, instead of turning to Marvel, Superman or the X-Men franchise for answers, he searched the world to find the finest examples of individuals who personify the 11 'super-human' traits. Today he shares what his research means for us. Grab your journal, your cape (put it on!) and get ready to soar into life with Rowan Hooper. SHOW NOTES: "People who try lots of different things are more likely to find things they really like and are really good at." Check out this recent article from chess grandmaster John Nun who Rowan shares innately understood math since age 4. "IQ itself is quite stable throughout life, but it does not guarantee personal outcome. Lots of people who are incredibly successful do not have particularly high IQs." Memory, on the other-hand, is something we can all improve with tricks and practice. John and Rowan discuss the Marshmallow test check it out. This video shares the story of Ellen McArthur, the British sailor, Rowan talked about her drive + her world record for fastest solo circumnavigation of globe. What have you learned about focus, that we can apply as we try to sell more insurance + lead better lives? "It's about having a goal, something you want to do in the future or something you need to complete in the next hour. Either way, identifying the reason for doing it + keeping it clear in your mind. It doesn't have to be dramatic. Identifying a goal and finding steps towards it will help you achieve that goal." "That moment her life changed + she chose to make something of it. She was empowered by this appalling thing that happened." With longevity comes happiness. People I met over 100 had an incredible positivity, can-do attitude + innate happiness. Get back up again and carried on. that is something we can all strive to do a bit more, not to get disheartened or knocked down. to carry on. they had a curiosity about life, that trait did seem to be spread across all the people I met in different ways. Get a copy of Rowan Hooper's book SUPERHUMAN here. If you enjoyed thinking about what you can do to improve your business, life + impact through Rowan's insights: Check out episode #103 with Brené Brown to get tips on how to improve your leadership through vulnerability. Or, episode #98 with Radha Agrawal on how to improve your sense of community + feel more connected. ROWAN HOOPER'S LIVE INSPIRED 7 1. What is the best book you’ve ever read? Lonesome Dove, Larry McCurty. It's an American Western, the characters in it stay with you forever, just like Huckleberry Finn. 2. What is a characteristic or trait that you possessed as a child that you wish you still exhibited today? Intensity of focus + ability to become obsessively interested enough to delve in and find new things. 3. Your house is on fire, all living things and people are out. You have the opportunity to run in and grab one item. What would it be? A steal box with old travel journals and photos. The reason it is in a steal box is that if there ever is a fire, it can survive. 4. You are sitting on a bench overlooking a gorgeous beach. You have the opportunity to have a long conversation with anyone living or dead. Who would it be? Charles Darwin. He was my hero growing up because he was an incredibly wise and passionate man who changed our world. The first question I'd ask: What do we do now about understanding the world? I'd try to update him and then ask his advice. 5. What is the best advice you've ever received? Do what you want to do. Don't force people to do things they don't want to do. Let them find their own way. 6. What advice would you give your 20-year-old self? Don't drink so much! Just enjoy your youth. Feel it while you've got it. 7. Scott Harrison made a lifetime of mistakes by the time he was 28. His journey, though broken, ultimately led him to starting charity: water, an organization that revolutionized the nonprofit model and in doing so, provides clean drinking water to 8,000,000+ people. Today we'll learn lessons on redemption, creative problem solving and creating purpose in our lives and work. Scott reminds us that making BIG change, though difficult, is possible and that the best is absolutely yet to come. SHOW NOTES: Scott was named to Fortune's 40 under 40, Forbes Impact 30 + Fast Company's Most Creative People. Check out these articles share insight on Scott's approach that turned the nonprofit model upside down + increased his impact 10x. Get Scott's new book THIRST here. "We're trying to bring clean + safe drinking water to everyone on earth. There are 660 million people drinking dirty water. We think that number should be zero." "I was rotting on the inside... I realized there would never be enough. As I looked around [I realized there would always be] people with a little more." "My epiphany was like a game of musical chairs. The music stopped and for the first time there was no where to sit." I hate my life. I'm morally + spiritually bankrupt. I asked what would the opposite of my life look like? My answer: Serving God and the poor + quitting all this crap that I'm doing. I said okay + I pledged to do that. Volunteering in Africa I realized dirty drinking water was responsible for much of the disease. Instead of volunteering to get more doctors, I made my life's mission getting clean water for everyone. Scott's research showed that people didn't trust nonprofits / he had to create a model in which 100% of donations would go directly to the cause. charity: water has 1,000,000+ donors supporting 30,000 well projects. They created an online community to expedite their goal of ensuring everyone on earth has clean water. I joined + invite you to join, too: Check out my page here. Love hearing about Scott's impact? Check out episode #96 with guest Tom Logan who is tackling the same issue with a different approach. Love hearing about how Scott went from a high-profile life of vice to a high-impact life of virtue? Check out episode #58 with Matt Emerzian for another refreshing story of redemption and impact. Co-hosts Jan Rutherford and Jim Vaselopulos interview Colleen Abdoulah, former Chair and CEO of WOW! Colleen, who was the only female CEO at a top-ten cable operating company, is widely respected for her passionate focus on customer experience and company culture. In this episode, Colleen motivates young professionals to lead passionately with purpose, by first learning the history, then seeking and engaging existing organizations. Colleen maintains that everyone has gifts and passions, and when directed meaningfully, these strengths will help guide leaders to success. She encourages leaders to reflect each day by asking, “How did I show up? Was I an influence for positive or negative?” She discourages passive-aggressive behaviors, and promotes accountability and learning to confront differences with courtesy. Listen in to learn the value of individual accountability, the best use of the inherent gifts all people have, and why methods matter along the way to your goals. Key Takeaways [5:33] Colleen gained awareness as a teenager that women across the world have had to fight for rights. In her 20’s, she was pulled to work for social justice and compassion towards the marginalized, especially women and children, and she continues those efforts today. [8:01] Colleen’s advice to young professionals looking to help a cause is first to get some context, find out the history and background, and do their homework. She says some young women today don't even know what a suffragette was. [11:46] Colleen recalls being counseled that if we make a difference in one life, then what we’re doing matters. [15:16] Ask yourself, “where can I contribute and be fed in the process?” Finding an enriching purpose makes the difference between a passion and an obligation. [17:15] When looking for a mentor, find people in your communities who have similar values to you, get their attention, share who you are. Your mentor's role is to listen, probe, draw out, and help guide and instruct you, not to advise you what to do. [20:38] There's diversity of lifestyle and ethnicity, but also diversity of mind. Many organizations make the mistake of finding people who think alike, because it's easier. Getting diversity right comes down to one basic thing — do I value it? [25:54] Regardless of our background, we all work with the basis that we're human beings who want to know, “Do I belong? Do I have something to contribute? And “A”m I valued and respected?” [31:03] How you love, how you interact, how you navigate through your career and your exchanges with others, differentiates you as a person. Books Mentioned on the Show How to Win Friends and Influence People, book by Dale Carnegie Bio Colleen Abdoulah, who was the only female CEO at a top-ten cable operating company, is widely respected for her passionate focus on customer experience and company culture. Currently the Chair of the Board at WOW!, Colleen guided Internet, cable and phone as CEO for 12 years. In those years, WOW! quadrupled the customer base, with revenues of over $1.2B, and earned multiple awards from J.D. Power and Associates, Consumer Reports, and PC Magazine Reader's' Choice. WOW! was named in the National Best and Brightest Companies to Work For in 2012 and 2013. Before joining WOW!, Colleen worked at TCI as Assistant COO and EVP of Cable Operations. She serves on the boards of the American Cable Association and C-SPAN, and is a past Vice President of the Executive Board of Women in Cable and Telecommunications, and past Chairperson for the WICT Foundation. She is past Chair of the Board for the Rocky Mountain Children's Law Center, serves on the boards for The Women's College of the University of Denver, the Colorado Chapter of the International Women's Forum, and World Pulse. Jay Papasan is a best-selling author and co-owner, alongside his wife Wendy, of Papasan Properties Group with Keller Williams Realty in Austin Texas. His most recent work with Gary Keller on The ONE Thing has garnered more than 238 appearances on the National Best-seller lists including #1 on the Wall Street Journal best-seller list. Jay serves as Gary Keller’s co-author and executive editor on best-selling titles including: The Millionaire Real Estate Agent, The Millionaire Real Estate Investor, SHIFT: How Top Real Estate Agents Tackle Tough Times, FLIP: How to Find, Fix, and Sell Houses for Profit,HOLD: How to Find, Buy, and Rent Houses for Wealth, and The ONE Thing: The Surprisingly Simple Truth Behind Extraordinary Results. He also co-authored SHIFT Commercial. Before joining Keller Williams Realty, Jay served as an editor at HarperCollins Publishers where he worked on such best-selling books as Body-for-Life by Bill Phillips and Go for the Goal by Mia Hamm. Growing up and going through the “normal” steps as most adolescents do, Jay went from high school, to college, to working in New York in search of his passion. Noticing that he had been living in his comfort zone, Jay set himself up for a challenge. He quit smoking and decided to run his first marathon. “It opened up a spotlight, that if I really devote myself to something for a long period of time, something extraordinary will happen.” Focus and determination was the thought process now, behind all that Jay set out to do. It’s a good lesson for all of us to learn, that anything is possible when you put your mind to it. “I started to say “yes” and I meant it.” Jay is a great example of an all-around success. As he says in the interview, he started saying yes to all conscious decisions and hasn't looked back since. Jay continues to keep a healthy marriage, a healthy business and an in-general healthy lifestyle. I think we under estimate how much opportunity life has for us. Thankfully, Jay is on today to remind us to get out there and chase these opportunities, with of course, the “better you” in mind. “If it’s not a hell yes, it’s a hell no!” Time is the most valuable currency, spend it wisely. Golden knows something about running. Between the ages of 10 and 14, Golden ran 5 marathons, debuting with a State Record 3:08 performance.
