Reflecting on her career choices, Erin Sawyer tells us that one pivotal point stands out—a decision that involved moving her family across the country. This step triggered not only a geographical shift but also a change in Sawyer's professional life, when her work alongside a CEO ultimately fueled her aspirations to become a chief financial officer. She had always been so captivated by numbers that by the tender age of 5 she had determined that her destiny lay in accounting. Her initial steps into the corporate world at Honeywell Aerospace as a cost accountant laid the groundwork for years of steady career advancement. Yet, it was her transition from accounting to a more dynamic role in financial planning and analysis (FP&A) that sparked her true passion—driving business forward through strategic finance. Sawyer's tenure in the Yellow Pages industry during its transformational phase sharpened her skills in business transformation and strategic partnership, preparing her for the challenges ahead. However, it was an opportunity at insurance software provider Vertafore that finally aligned her with a CEO mentor, whom she greatly admired. This relationship deepened her expertise in operational excellence and marked a decisive step toward achieving her eventual CFO ambitions.

Like other industry disruptions preceding it, the InsurTech movement was widely viewed as a threat to the existence of the independent agency channel.  Thus far, the independent agent has proven to be an invaluable component in meeting client needs and expectations. Still, technology advances are the ecosystem in which they must operate – together with their carrier and digital partners. In this panel, leaders representing the three components of this dynamic, IA's, carriers, and tech, share their thoughts on how to make the customer journey a smoother one and why collaboration is a win-win for all parties. Don't miss this conversation... Episode Highlights: Ryan introduces his guests: Amy Zupon, CEO of Vertafore, Tyler Asher, President of IA Distribution for Liberty Mutual, and Matt Masiello, CEO of SAA. Amy Zupon mentions that the increasing amount of M&A in the industry is catching her attention right now. (8:50) Amy Zupon explains that there is a huge amount of money invested in the space right now, and she sees this trend continuing. (11:07) Matt Masiello shares that we are currently seeing a lot of exclusive business channels being converted to independent agency channels. (13:25) Tyler Asher explains that in the next few years, what he sees is better quality service and continuous growth in market share. (15:55) Matt Masiello believes that small businesses need to be a part of other organizations to remain small and independent. (22:27) Amy Zupon explains that as a software company, they believe in an open platform, and they belong to groups where they participate with tech companies that are similar to them. (27:12) Amy Zupon explains that the Orange Partner Program's concept is to be open and to establish relationships because the partnership is about trust and communication. (33:06) Matt Masiello mentions that partnership has two bookends, first, you have to like your partner, and second, you have to have the same goal as them. (37:40) Tyler Asher shares that the agents, carriers, technology providers, and vendors still have a lot of work to do when it comes to integration. (45:24) Tyler Asher explains that retention is materially higher when customers engage in online digital capabilities for service. (54:24) Matt Masiello shares that the two things independent agencies can do to scale their business are lead generation and digitization. (57:47) Key Quotes: "We did start that Orange Partner Program with the philosophy of being open and building on relationships and collaborating with others to build things." - Amy Zupon "To really grow, it means taking a look at the digital resources that are out there and getting them into your agency, which includes building a digital brand, whether you're in a geographic market, or a digital market." - Matt Masiello "I think right now, the biggest gap is making sure that we're serving customers in the way they need to be served today." - Tyler Asher Resources Mentioned: Amy Zupon LinkedIn Matt Masiello LinkedIn Tyler Asher LinkedIn Vertafore SIAA Liberty Mutual Insurance Reach out to Ryan Hanley

Director of Data Science at Vertafore, Scott Ziemke joins Wendy on this week's episode of Would You Data Scientist to get in depth about data science in the insurance field. Find out how data differs from sector to sector, how it’s sometimes the same, and how data differs from academia to the world of work. KEY TAKEAWAYS Vertafore has the largest insurance policy data set in the world. One of the biggest use cases in insurance data science is re-marketing, essentially catching people who may leave for a better deal elsewhere and targeting them with something to incentivise them to stay. Academic data sets still don’t measure in complexity to an enterprise data set. The scale and size of the data problems are much greater in the industry than people are used to seeing while studying. Some kinds of data science apply to all businesses. For example, every company has a HR department and there is HR data science. If you’re looking to get into data science then get experience hands on with a real-life data set. Employers will generally look for the person with experience rather than just the learning. He shares what Foodmaven does.   [3:15] 40% of the food produced in the country is wasted, for an estimated 200 billion dollar loss annually. Ben explains Foodmaven's mission in this landscape as well as how some of the varied industries he's worked in have similarities that he was able to use and be more adaptable and sometimes even innovative.   CEO EXPECTATIONS [8:45] Being newly minted, Ben touches on what he expected being a CEO would be as well as the people, preparation and path it took to get him there. He also touches on the great board he can count on to help him navigate the learning curves.   CRITICAL EXPERIENCE [12:59] Ben breaks down the different ways you can get the critical pieces of experience you need in order to get to a CEO position as well as the importance of surrounding yourself well while still being knowledgeable.   THE MOST IMPACTFUL ROLE [15:43] While there wasn't one role that made him the CEO he is today, Ben does highlight a few of the key positions he's held and how they drove his management style and general business knowledge — and that includes his military service.   FOR THE AMBITIOUS VP OUT THERE [18:52] Ben's advice is about figuring yourself out, picking your opportunities and planning your path.   WHEN THINGS DON'T GO AS PLANNED [20:40] Without singling out one specific moment or decision, Ben touches on his broader tendency to make decisions that seem not to follow a straight line and what may have helped him land the CEO position.   DENVER STARTUP WEEK [23:40] Ben shares how it started, with whom, and why — today, it's the largest free entrepreneurial event in North America. He also takes a moment to reflect on the possibilities for the future.   [31:47] Ben speaks to the great network the Denver Startup Week has facilitated for him.   [33:20] Organizing Denver Startup Week has taught Ben a lot about community and that giving up a measure of control is both hard and necessary. He shares how he has now begun to move away from the frontlines and into a board position.   SO YOU WANT TO BUILD AN EVENT? [36:44] Ben shares his best advice for people who may be interested in building an event of their own. He also gives the three rules he uses with new teams: Get stuff done. Don't screw your team.
