Dr. Kyle Cromer is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Surgery at the University of California, San Francisco School of Medicine. In his lab, Kyle takes gene editing a step further beyond just modifying “the typos” in DNA to correct them back to what the code should be. He uses genome-editing approaches to introduce new functions into cells for different therapeutic purposes. Kyle has always been interested in visual art, so he enjoys visiting art museums and has dabbled in creating his own art as well. He and his wife have been stretching their own canvases and creating their own abstract paintings, each meticulously planned and sketched out in advance. Most recently, the two of them have been immersed in preparations for the birth of their first child. He completed his BS in Animal & Poultry Sciences at Virginia Tech and his PhD in Genetics at Yale University. Afterwards, he conducted postdoctoral research in Genetics at Harvard Medical School. Next he worked as a postdoctoral fellow and subsequently an instructor in Pediatrics at Stanford University before joining the faculty at UCSF. He has received various awards and honors over the past several years, including the Stanford Bio-X Star Mentor Award, the American Society of Gene & Cell Therapy Career Development Award, the UCSF Program for Breakthrough Biomedical Research New Frontier Research Award, the American Society of Hematology Junior Faculty Scholar Award, the Mary Anne Koda-Kimble Seed Award for Innovation from the UCSF School of Pharmacy, and the Catalyst Award from UCSF Innovation Ventures. In this episode, Kyle shares more about his life and science.

In 1997, a group of white pro-life evangelical Christians in the United States created the nation's first embryo adoption program to “save” the thousands of frozen human embryos remaining from assisted reproduction procedures, which they contend are unborn children. While a small part of US fertility services, embryo adoption has played an outsized role in conservative politics, from high-profile battles over public investment in human embryonic stem cell research to the overturning of Roe v. Wade. Based on six years of ethnographic research with embryo adoption staff and participants, Dr. Risa Cromer uncovers how embryo adoption advances ambitious political goals for expanding the influence of conservative Christian values and power. Conceiving Christian America: Embryo Adoption and Reproductive Politics (NYU Press, 2023) is the first book on embryo adoption tracing how this powerful social movement draws on white saviorist tropes in their aims to reconceive personhood, with drastic consequences for reproductive rights and justice. Documenting the practices, narratives, and beliefs that move embryos from freezers to uteruses, this book wields anthropological wariness as a tool for confronting the multiple tactics of the Christian Right. Timely and provocative, Conceiving Christian America presents a bold and nuanced examination of a family-making process focused on conceiving a Christian nation. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose new book focuses on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars. In August 2021, Cromer fired shots at his on-off girlfriend during a dispute near Lake Allatoona, though she was unharmed. Two years later, while out on bond, he assaulted another woman, choking her twice and preventing her from calling 911. Cromer was apprehended the next day. Deputy Chief Assistant District Attorney Rachel Ashe prosecuted the case, emphasizing Cromer's violent behavior. Judge Tony Baker imposed the sentence, banning Cromer from Cherokee County and contact with the victims, aiming to protect the community and offer healing to the victims. STORY 2: Holly Springs Man Convicted of Child Sexual Abuse Sentenced to Life Bryan Lamar Gay, a Holly Springs man, received a life sentence in prison after being convicted of multiple child sexual abuse charges. Chief Superior Court Judge Ellen McElyea imposed the sentence on May 28 following Gay's conviction on May 16, which included counts of aggravated sexual battery, aggravated child molestation, and child molestation. The investigation by the Holly Springs Police Department and Cherokee Sheriff's Office began after a middle school student disclosed abuse on January 25, 2023. Testimonies during the trial revealed years of manipulation and abuse within the family. Assistant District Attorney Alana J. Driscoll emphasized Gay's systematic abuse, which shattered trust and harmed innocent children. Despite Gay's attempts to deflect blame during the trial, the jury believed the victim's testimony, leading to the life sentence. District Attorney Susan Treadaway expressed hope that the sentence would bring peace and healing to the victims and prevent future harm to children. Gay must also register as a sex offender and have no contact with the victims. STORY 3: Georgia Appellate Court Sets October Hearing in Trump's Bid To Disqualify Da Willis The Georgia Court of Appeals has scheduled former President Donald Trump's appeal in the Georgia election interference case for October, delaying the trial until after the November 5 election. Trump's legal team sought the removal of Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis from the case due to her prior relationship with an attorney involved. Despite a ruling allowing Willis to remain if the attorney stepped down, the trial will likely be postponed. Trump faces charges related to the 2020 election and the January 6 Capitol attack, alongside federal charges and recent convictions in New York City. This delay means only one of the four criminal cases against Trump is likely to be tried before the election. We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. STORY 5: Cherokee County Wants Your Input on Highway 20 East Overlay District The Cherokee County Planning and Zoning Department is seeking public input on the draft ordinance for the proposed Highway 20 East Overlay District until July 1. This initiative stems from the Georgia Department of Transportation's SR 20 Corridor Widening Project, focusing on the east side of Highway 20. Religion & Spirituality Kindle eBooks @ Amazon.com. What is Disability Justice? - Disability & Philanthropy Forum (disabilityphilanthropy.org) There are many articles online that address the intersection of disability and faith. Because I am not anxious to endorse any of them without time to read and consider them carefully, I can only encourage you to explore how the church, and most especially the Evangelical and Pentecostal churches, view and treat disability. My personal experience was an emphasis on praying the disability away; which will be familiar to anyone who has ever attended a faith healing service. This puts a tremendous burden of shame on any disabled person who appears to lack the necessary faith to receive Gods healing. Shame is the predominant theme of most of the churches I encountered between 1984 and 2015. I'd like to say I just had really bad luck with churches(and this may be true on a grand scale) but at least one of these churches was a very well regarded mega church in Colorado Springs. This Week's Guests: Greg Cromer and Jeff LewisEver felt the heartache of having to choose between the thrill of victory and the smiles of children getting their chance on the field? Then pull up a chair in The Parents Lounge, where we tackle the emotional rollercoaster of youth sports coaching, and laugh off the Thanksgiving prep pandemonium with Jeff Lewis (Keenan, The Guild) and Greg Cromer( Better Things). We're slicing up more than just turkey as we carve into the debate over remaking films like "Die Hard," and share some film industry insights that'll have you looking at your holiday favorites in a new light. The world outside is a whirlwind of news and pressures, but within the walls of The Parents Lounge, we're turning down the volume to focus on mental health awareness. We'll navigate the minefield of 24-hour news cycles and the sometimes dark corners of social media, all while sharing a few heartfelt tales from the parenting frontlines. Our conversation is a reminder that amidst the laughter, there's a place for the serious stuff, too—a place for parents to come together and support each other through thick and thin. Now, don't think it's all heavy topics; we've got our share of stories that'll have you chuckling, like Jeff Lewis's very own 'tooth' adventure, tying back to the wonders of dental technology. We're also musing on the mysteries of love and relationships, and whether the essence of romance could be captured in a pill. So whether you're here for a chuckle, a contemplative moment, or just a sense of camaraderie, there's a little something for every parent in this episode of our show.Grab yourself a drink, and join us!You can catch more of Jeff Lewis on Instagram at:https://www.instagram.com/jeffylew/You can catch more of Greg Cromer on Instagram at:https://www.instagram.com/gmcromer/You can catch The Parent's Lounge live every Tuesday Night at 10pm EST/7pm PST at:https://www.facebook.com/theparentsloungeJamie Kaler's Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/jamiekaler/Jason Gowin's Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/jasongowin/Justin Rupple's Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/therupple/The Parent's Lounge TikTok - https://www.tiktok.com/@theparentsloungeshowSupport the show
