In this episode of Half Hour, we take a deeper dive into the Broadway production of The Fear of 13 at the James Earl Jones Theatre, written by Lindsey Ferrentino and directed by David Cromer. We break down how the original documentary has been reshaped into a theatrical experience, and what is gained when Nick Yarris's story of wrongful conviction and years on death row is told live onstage. We talk through Adrien Brody's performance as Nick and Tessa Thompson's work as Jacki, along with contributions from Ephraim Sykes and the ensemble, and how their choices shape the evening's emotional impact. We also examine Cromer's pacing, the production's minimalist set and symbolic lighting, and how music and sound design reinforce themes of justice, systemic failure, and the human cost of the appeals process. Finally, we consider The Fear of 13's partnership with criminal justice advocates, its relevance to ongoing conversations about wrongful convictions, and where we see this production landing in the Tony Awards conversation this season. Mackerel will soon be disappearing from the shelves of Waitrose as the supermarket says it's 'taking a stand against overfishing'. In September last year the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES), recommended that North-east Atlantic Mackerel catches should be cut by 70% to help rebuild stocks to a sustainable level. But four countries which fish for Mackerel in the North East Atlantic cut their quota for 2026 by just 48% compared to the previous year. As a result, Waitrose has decided to suspend sourcing from the end of April. Fishing organisations in Scotland say they are disappointed and feel they have been unfairly penalised because - they say - the UK has led the way in trying to secure sustainable fishing for Mackerel.Anna Hill reports from a Cromer seafood processor who's experiencing a drop in the availability of Crabs following fishing disruption due to wind farm construction. It's been a worrying winter for poultry farmers, with cases of avian flu in England, Scotland and Wales. The Pirbright Institute's Head of Avian Virology updates us on what he describes as the 'third worst ever' epidemic of high pathogenicity bird flu in the UK, and reflects on what might lie ahead over the spring and summer. Cambridge University's vet school will not be closing after all. The University's governing body has rejected proposals to cease taking new entrants.Presenter: Anna Hill Producer: Sarah Swadling

This month, Practice Life podcast hosts Drs. Jessica Dunbar and Travis Boston chat with Dr. Casey Cromer about the critical topic of inter-generational communication within the equine veterinary profession, covering interactions with colleagues, staff, and clients. Dr. Cromer provides a breakdown of different communication preferences, values, and characteristics associated with the Silent Generation, Baby Boomers, Generation X, Millennials, and Generation Z. The discussion emphasizes the importance of understanding these generational differences—such as the Silent Generation's preference for formal, face-to-face communication versus Gen Z's preference for short, visual information—to improve workplace dynamics and client care, highlighting that effective communication is paramount to successful veterinary practice. In today's episode of Three Ravens, it's series finale time, and Martin is guiding us through the history and folklore Norfolk! We begin by acknowledging quite what an extraordinary journey we have been on in just over two years, and then discuss Appleby Horse Fair which is happening right now - get along to it if you can! Then, we navigate to Norfolk and chat through all sorts of wonders to do with the county - from the prehistoric landscape of the Grimes Graves flint mines to the feverish revelations of the first female writer in English literature, Julian of Norwich, with a joyful stop-off at Cromer for some dressed crab, and much more besides. For this week's County Dish, the last one of the series, Martin plies us with cheese, seafood, and some weirder options, including Norfolk Milk Punch and Norfolk Dumplings (a.k.a. 'Fillers' and 'Swimmers') which sets us up nicely for the final leg of our jaunt! In terms of the county's folklore, we have ghosts - including one very dramatic one, and another that's absolutely terrifying, chat about Black Shuck (of course), the Fenland Secret Society of the Goose Feather, a Georgian 'Wild Boy' called Peter, plus plenty else, all enriched with some excerpts from Saturday's upcoming Local Legends interview with award-winning writer, storyteller, and all-round hero of the modern English folk tradition, Hugh Lupton. Then it's on to the main event: Martin's telling of "The Pedlar of Swaffham" - one of England's best-known folk tales, and perhaps Norfolk's most famous. Although this version of the story might not pan out quite as you'd expect...We really hope you enjoy the episode, and will be back on Thursday with a Seasonal Special bonus episode all about Midsummer and its associated traditions, all before the full interview with Hugh comes out on Saturday! The Three Ravens is an English Myth and Folklore podcast hosted by award-winning writers Martin Vaux and Eleanor Conlon.Released on Mondays, each weekly episode focuses on one of England's 39 historic counties, exploring the history, folklore and traditions of the area, from ghosts and mermaids to mythical monsters, half-forgotten heroes, bloody legends, and much, much more. Then, and most importantly, the pair take turns to tell a new version of an ancient story from that county - all before discussing what that tale might mean, where it might have come from, and the truths it reveals about England's hidden past...Bonus Episodes are released on Thursdays plus Local Legends episodes on Saturdays - interviews with acclaimed authors, folklorists, podcasters and historians with unique perspectives on that week's county. With a range of exclusive content on Patreon, too, including audio ghost tours, the Three Ravens Newsletter, and monthly Three Ravens Film Club episodes about folk horror films from across the decades, why not join us around the campfire and listen in?Learn more at www.threeravenspodcast.com, join our Patreon at www.patreon.com/threeravenspodcast, and find links to our social media channels here: https://linktr.ee/threeravenspodcast Hosted on Acast. In 1997, a group of white pro-life evangelical Christians in the United States created the nation's first embryo adoption program to “save” the thousands of frozen human embryos remaining from assisted reproduction procedures, which they contend are unborn children. While a small part of US fertility services, embryo adoption has played an outsized role in conservative politics, from high-profile battles over public investment in human embryonic stem cell research to the overturning of Roe v. Wade. Based on six years of ethnographic research with embryo adoption staff and participants, Dr. Risa Cromer uncovers how embryo adoption advances ambitious political goals for expanding the influence of conservative Christian values and power. Conceiving Christian America: Embryo Adoption and Reproductive Politics (NYU Press, 2023) is the first book on embryo adoption tracing how this powerful social movement draws on white saviorist tropes in their aims to reconceive personhood, with drastic consequences for reproductive rights and justice. Documenting the practices, narratives, and beliefs that move embryos from freezers to uteruses, this book wields anthropological wariness as a tool for confronting the multiple tactics of the Christian Right. Timely and provocative, Conceiving Christian America presents a bold and nuanced examination of a family-making process focused on conceiving a Christian nation. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose new book focuses on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars. Wade. Albert Einstein, one of the 20th century's most transformative figures, found refuge in the secluded expanse of North Norfolk's coast during a critical juncture in his life. His odyssey to Roughton Heath was fraught with danger, yet it proved to be a defining moment in his evolution as both a scientist and a public intellectual, whose revolutionary ideas had the potential to reshape our understanding of the world. If you're captivated by such narratives, please consider leaving a review, subscribing, and recommending our podcast to others who share your passion for history, folklore, and the macabre in East Anglia.
