#168 – You're told to be an independent learner at university—but no one actually shows you how. In this episode, I'm unpacking why independent learning feels so hard at higher education level, especially if you're returning to study as an adult. You'll learn why the problem isn't your intelligence, motivation or potential—but the lack of proper support. I'll break down the myth of ‘just figuring it out', share the metaphor I use with my students to explain what's really going on, and walk you through what should happen instead. If studying still feels harder than it should be, this episode will help you understand why—and give you a clearer way forward. Michael Nelson, a dedicated single father and accomplished web developer, opens up about his transformative journey into homeschooling his three children. Drawing inspiration from his own upbringing under the tutelage of his teacher mother, Michael blends foundational skill-building with fostering autonomy in his kids. He shares insights on managing educational records and navigating college admissions, debunking common myths and offering practical guidance to those considering or engaged in homeschooling. Exploring the dichotomy between homeschooling and public education, Michael candidly addresses initial skepticism and misconceptions, underscoring the value of personalized learning. He relays personal anecdotes, like successfully tutoring his children during an illness, to highlight how one-on-one attention can surpass traditional classroom education. We discuss the importance of balancing public education's foundational skills with the self-directed learning homeschooling provides, noting the growing acceptance of diverse educational paths. Crafting a curriculum that caters to his children's unique learning styles, Michael, with the support of his homeschooling community, illustrates the power of flexible scheduling and diverse resources. As we navigate socialization challenges and evolving homeschooling stereotypes, he reassures parents by emphasizing the benefits of connecting with local communities and embracing flexible teaching methodologies. This episode serves as an empowering guide for parents, particularly single fathers, offering reassurance and encouragement to confidently embark on the rewarding path of homeschooling. In this week's episode I'm talking about my new interactive workshop, which is all about the challenges that we can face as advanced language learners. We've got our language to a good level, but then, for whatever reason, we feel stuck and it's hard to move forward. We'll explore 5 challenges that you might be facing and what you can do to move past them.Talking about problems isn't fun, so I wanted to make it a bit more approachable and light-hearted. I also didn't want to make case studies with these 5 challenges in case anyone had the same name as the characters. So instead, we have 5 dogs. You can see the retriever in the picture here - she struggles with perfectionism. Does anyone relate to that? If you do, come along to the workshop! We also have 4 other dogs with different situations, so if you come, you'll discover whether you're more like the spaniel, the labrador, the German shepherd or the collie!Or maybe you'll have elements of more than one. As a language learner, I do!This is where you can find out more about the workshop on 28th November 2024 and book your place:https://englishwithkirsty.com/dogs-and-language-learners-tips-for-advanced-learners-to-get-unstuck/ And this is where you can listen to the episode on my site:https://englishwithkirsty.com/podcast/episode263/
Today I'm sharing a tip from one of our language exchange for language professionals meet-ups and it's something that I'm doing to help with my Portuguese. If you commit to giving yourself regular opportunities to write, this will also help your general fluency. Finding time for something quick is often easier than finding time to write a long essay! You can always extend the word count - I often go well over mine - but it's a minimum and you can always make the task harder as your language skills increase. You can also add new rules such as "don't use the dictionary" - so you have to use the words that you already know. I'd do that for German and Romanian, but the Portuguese practise for me is also about vocabulary building. You can be more prescriptive about the text.Or, if stories are more your thing, you could commit to writing a bit more of your story each time.If you try this out, let me know how you get on!Find out more on the show notes page:https://www.englishwithkirsty.com/podcast/episode251***********Send me an email if you have any questions or suggestions about the English with Kirsty podcast:podcast@englishwithkirsty.comor come and find me on LinkedIn https://www.linkedin.com/in/kirsty-wolf-a8478235/

This week we move from the practialities of starting and planning revision to the learning itself. The focus is on how we can help students to build learning so that it is retained in long term memory. Whilst there are lots of ways to approach this today's episode focused on 3 key concepts: Levels of processing, spacing and interleaving. I mentioned that there are several podcasts that delve into these concepts in more depth. Further information can be found here: Levels of processing: https://changingstatesofmind.libsyn.com/getting-stuff-to-stick-in-long-term-memory Interleaving: https://changingstatesofmind.libsyn.com/interleaving-a-useful-learning-strategy Finally please do fill in the podcast feedback form so I can make the content even better! https://forms.gle/jJzpJwWDNovwAPez5
I would argue that good planning is an art or at the very least a skill that needs to learned and perfected and yet we often cut our planning teeth on a revision timetable just before we do exams. How many student's plans turn out to be too vague, over ambitious or too rigid? This week's episode explores this skill and how we can best encourage students to become effective planners: understanding what they need to get done, what the time frame is in which they need to do it and how best they can plan to suit their own context. One question I get asked often is this, “How do you get your kids to learn independently? How do I teach them to do their homeschool on their own?” You want them to grow up to lead and not follow the crowd. . . to not be dependent on someone else in college, in their job, in their family. Amber Smith has ten kids and had to figure this out on her own. Today, she shares practical ways for you to avoid her mistakes and teach your kids independent learning. In this episode you'll discover:✅ Most important thing to do in your homeschool✅ 3 tips to create independent learners✅ What to do when you feel so far off track and don't think you can finish the school year✅ 1 tool to help you stay focused in your homeschoolResources Mentioned:Life Skills Leadership Summit 202430 Days to Homeschool ResetMom BinderAs a mother of ten, Amber Smith doesn't have time to waste. I bet, neither do you! That is why Amber creates clear action plans to help families find the right tools and develop the mindset they need to create a homeschool that fits their unique, individual lives. On her blog, 200 fingers and toes, she serves as a homeschool courage lender. To encourage first time homeschoolers, Amber created In Due Season, a site that hosts a course to overcome the top six roadblocks keeping families from experiencing a successful homeschool year. You can find continued support on the In Due Season Homeschool Podcast where Amber shares reviews of tools and curriculum, technologies and products that solve specific problems for homeschooling families like yours.
What is it that motivates students to study? A few lucky people may genuinely enjoy the process of memorising facts and preparing for exams, but this is probably rare. For most people studying requires effort and despite the high stakes, the reward of good exam results (or fear of bad ones) in the distant future is not enough of a motivation when there are far more exciting and immediately rewarding things to do instead. So this week we consider how we can motivate students to engage in independent study by bringing in short term, tangible rewards. If you want to learn more about planning the link I mention is here: https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/epdf/10.1177/237946151500100205
In this second episode we explore why study habits may help students with independent study and how we as teachers can support students to build effective study habits. Behavioural change is really hard, as anyone who had already forgotten their new year's resolution, can attest to! There are a few key things that we can help students with if they want to build in independent learning to their schedule. We consider the role of homework in building habits, habit stacking, cueing habits and reducing friction. Finally we think about how we can help students embed behaviour change when it needs to happen outside of the classroom context. These behavioural change tips are equally applicable to other behaviours such as exercise, sleep and work, so worth a listen if you want to change your habits too! The two books for further reading are Wendy Wood's Good Habits, Bad Habits and James Clear's Atomic Habits.
Inherent in our educational system is the expectation that students will study independently to achieve at the higher levels. Some students are lucky and hit on strategies that work, others flounder whilst motivated to do well they don't know how to learn. As educators why leave the effectiveness of independent study largely up to chance when we have a whole host of excellent tools at our disposal, we need to share them with our students in a strategic and coherent way to give students the confidence to use these tools effectively in a wide range of different scenarios and ultimately to take control of their own educational success.
This week hosts Mike Nawrocki and Sarah Humphrey talk with author Danika Cooley about her new book in the BIble Investigators series, Creation Puzzles and Activities for Independent Learning. Bursting with 90 brain-teasing puzzles, 40 Bible passages, and 30 concepts regarding God's creation, this lesson-and-activity book will give kids aged 8-12 skills to investigate the Bible for themselves—like a real investigator! As kids apply logic and solve challenging puzzles, they will dive deeply into Scripture and examine the Bible's account of creation, picking up lots of skills for reading and interpreting the Bible. As well as lots of puzzles, there are journaling boxes for kids to reflect on, interpret, and apply what they have learned. Great for use in homeschools (independent work, morning time, or Bible lessons) and also great for churches to use with kids. Fun for road trips and rainy days too! The book includes a link to free downloads that include reproducibles for more than one child, so families or classes can easily work together. Win the Game of Independent Learning at Home, School or Work Recent trends in education and even employment have us learning remotely on our own at home, or virtually via platforms like Zoom. This has thrust many students, parents and managers into the stressful position of ‘teacher' for which they have no official training. While subject matter is always changing depending on age, maturity, sophistication of content or purpose, there are some underlying disciplines for effective learning and thinking that will serve everyone regardless of age, stage or type of learning.

By the time Gefen Skolnick finished college she had already dipped her toes into the world of venture capital, and was well on her way to a tech career in Silicon Valley. But in 2021 she put down the laptop, founded Couplet Coffee, and became an immediately successful CPG entrepreneur. A year later, Couplet is wildly successful in both online DTC and on retail shelves and Gefen is exploring what it means to grow a business intelligently and intentionally, all while having fun and enjoying great coffee. Welcome to the Emergent Human with Michael Ostrolenk, where we explore optimizing health, embodied spirituality, and post-conventional living. Today I speak with Luba Vangelova (http://www.lubavangelova.com/), a co-founder of several pioneering, mixed-ages co-learning groups for independent learners, including The Hub (https://thehub.community/), and author of numerous articles on the future of learning for media outlets such as The Atlantic and the NPR/PBS MindShift websites. Vangelova discusses conventional education, specifically how the approach does not adapt to the various needs and skills of individual children. She details alternative models in which children are a part of the selection process of their learning. In response to concerns often raised about alternative methods of education, Vangelova notes that children, with rare exceptions, have an innate drive to learn the skills required to be productive members of a community. Key among the benefits is that children are responsible contributors to their own educational process, fostering drive, ownership, and self-determination. To learn more about Vangelova and her work, visit The Hub (https://thehub.community/) and her website (http://www.lubavangelova.com/). You can also find additional resources at https://alternativestoschool.com/. Key Takeaway->It takes some effort on our part to encourage independent learning, but the rewards are well worth it!One of the key skills that we as homeschoolers can impart to our students is to teach them how to learn independently. This is a gradual process, but today I want to share with you three tips to help you encourage your students to get on the road to independent learning. These are the three things we have done to set our kiddos on the road to independent learning:1. Know when they are ready.2. Choose a curriculum that fosters independence.3. Do we have this mentality that in order to learn a language we have to attend a class? Penny is considering returning to uni to do a Diploma of Chinese language. Bec and Penny debate the pros and cons of class/group learning versus independent learning and how technology has changed how we approach language learning.
OverviewWhat if the goal of a school was “to learn to” learn, live act and be? And it looked like a place where students worked on whatever topic there were interested in for the day, had the freedom to choose when to take tests, actively participated in regular trips and might be expected to travel the world speaking about the school. The Evangelical School Berlin Centre is that school. Today I talk with Jamila Tressel a senior student at the school all about her experiences and why she believes the way she is learning is best way for all our students.BioJamila Tressel is a student at the ESBZ School in Germany and a young author, speaker, trainer coach and change maker, empowering young people to unfold their potential and make a change. After many negative experiences in the traditional school system the student is campaigning for a drastic change of the education system since she was 12 years old, speaking at national and international conferences and leading trainings for students, teachers and managers, often in collaboration with “Schule im Aufbruch” (Schools in Transformation)

My Favorite Type of Podcast Episode More than any other type of podcast episode, I love listening to interviews from “regular people” doing incredible things. During these types of episodes, you can tell that the interviewee is checking all the #adulting boxes without even know that financially speaking, they are exceptional. The podcast episode with Crystal Barnett was one such interview, and it was an absolute pleasure speaking with her. The most special part was that her two girls, 14 and 12 years old, actually helped with the setup and execution of the interview! Crystal (and Co.) is a mom worth learning from! Who is Crystal Barnett, JD Crystal Barnett is a new attorney in the Virginia area. She is also the mom to two young ladies, and wife to a Naval officer. The thing that makes Crystal so special to me is that she is a long time friend of mine! Unbeknownst to me or her, Crystal was doing all sorts of FI "hacking" activities well before “Hacking” was even a buzzword. She was the first person to use credit card arbitrage, the first person I knew that qualified for the southwest companion pass, and she is my go to person to learn about teaching or homeschooling your kids, which can be useful tool within the often traveling FI community. All About Alternative Schooling Crystal’s first daughter started in a Montessori school in Connecticut, and they both loved it. However, because of the age rules in CT, when her daughter turned 4, the school district tried to send her into kindergarten! This seemed too early and age to Crystal. She decided to take her daughter out for just the year, and teach the basic curriculum herself, instead of push her into full-time school. When her husband came back from military service, the family was forced to change locations, leaving the school behind. Once her second child was on the way, it became clear that they needed more flexibility in educational options! Honestly, who wants to search for quality schools every time you move? What started out as a short term solution (teaching the young kids herself) eventually extended to 9 years of Mommy-daughter(s) learning. Did you know?... When you have your own homeschool, you get to name it!! The Barnett family named their school The Candid School of Independent Learning! But Wait, What About Socialization? This question, “What about Socialization?” is the number one question that their family receives. It is a complete misperception about the homeschooling community! In fact, a great point that Crystal made (and that I have personally witnessed) is that the kids actually get to socialize not just with kids their age but with people of all ages! I’ve personally experienced this, so I can relate to this idea. This summer, my daughter was able to socialize with freshman high school students. It was an awesome experience for her to learn from kids of different ages- not just from other 10 year olds who have a similarly limited scope as hers! Here is a question for the listeners - do public schools teach socialization, or are they teaching institutionalization? The Flexibility of HomeSchooling Alternative schooling offers something that is useful to those pursuing FI with families. The first time Crystal and her husband realized the benefits was in the 4th year of homeschooling. They were able to take an impromptu Disney cruise for a lower rate! Why? Because all of the other kids in the US were in school! Homeschooling tip: You can really take advantage of that time between holidays to take a cheaper vacation! Homeschooling Questions We Covered Listen to the episode for more details. We got great tips on the following questions: How to Homeschool FOR FREE? How to decide on curriculum, how to research it and choose it? What’s the difference between online schooling and traditional textbook? How to choose between religious and secular texts? Also traditional vs. kinesthetic formats? How can a person find other homeschoolers/families? What is a good homeschooling budget? What are the requirements for proof of learning? What type of testing do the learners have to take? What type of discounts can you get for being a homeschooling teacher? Here is a website to check out that offers decent options and pricing: Home School Buyers Mastering Travel Crystal is not a “travel hacker” in the normal definition of the term, but she does use points to travel! Since her family uses Delta and Southwest more than other airlines, they focus their credit card bonuses and spending towards those cards. They do the same with hotels! Listen to the Podcast to learn how they use the Southwest Companion Pass to fly to Disney 5 times for FREE! And what about learning during all those Disney Trips? Year round schooling lends itself to lots of vacation time! Add that to autonomous learning and you’ve got yourself the perfect family schedule! For more tips on credit card rewards, a great site is Travel 101. Law School For FREE While pursuing her Master’s degree in Education in 2013, Crystal was encouraged by her professor (also a lawyer) to attend law school. She didn’t pay it much mind at first, but the professor encouraged her again! Eventually, she decided to look into it, and eventually began to study for the entrance exam. In this episode she goes over what she did to qualify for scholarships, and gives motivating advice for others looking to go to law school for free! WHAT!! Wendy and I paid over 6 figures combined for all of our schooling - we needed to hear these details! Crystal on the final questions: Know how much you are spending, we aware, but remember money can be replaced, but memories can not. You may have learned a lot about finances, but never stop trying to gain more knowledge about money! There is more to learn. Crystal's life hack for parents - Teach your kids to cook using Hello Fresh! Crystal gets the boxes delivered and now her 14 and 12 year old cook dinner for the family twice a week! Sounds GREAT to Wendy and I! Crystal most recent favorite purchase? A new pair of her favorite running shoes! Wanna see the business Crystal's daughter started? go to tripleLyarn.com

Well-known connected educator Connie Hamilton says the most critical component of kids becoming independent learners is to be clear about what they should be learning and how it’s connected to a broader purpose. In another edgy, unabridged, unedited edition of Hack Learning Uncut, Hamilton, co-author of Hacking Homework: 10 Strategies That Inspire Learning Outside the Classroom, discusses a much-needed shift in education away from kids learning at home “because my teacher said I need to.” to students choosing to work outside of school because the activities “help me solidify my learning.” In this brief Uncut interview, Hamilton makes clear connections between in-class lessons and real-world learning at home that students will always choose to do—not because they’re told to but because they want to learn more. The High School for Independent Learning of Albany and Piedmont California addresses the learning requirements of those students where a typical learning environment has not been successful. This school seeks to enable these students to be successful and enjoy learning, perhaps for the first time in their lives. The student body also includes youth who have work or practice requirements that preclude going to regular school. We talk with Shary Nunan, the Co-Director of the school, who tells us how the school got its start and how the needs of its students are addressed. Teaching a less traveled way.
