Is studying music theory really useful? Yep. You heard right. I really said that, and I'm a total theory nerd. I'm not going to leave you in suspense. Of course, knowing music theory is useful and helpful and part of being a good musician. But only - and this is a big “only” - if you know how it's useful. Did you ever take a class in school and the whole time you were sitting in class you were thinking, “I'm never going to use this stuff”? Of course, you did. I remember sitting in my calculus class in high school - which, incidentally, I really enjoyed - knowing that I was going to music school and very unlikely to ever use any of this kind of higher mathematics again. Maybe your useless class was a math course, or it could have been just about any other subject. Sometimes we discovered later that we were wrong; for instance, a little understanding of chemistry is helpful if you're trying to work out ingredient substitutions in a recipe. At the time, though, the information falls into the category of “good to know, but I'll never need it.” I taught classes like that when I was teaching at Curtis. The theory and ear training classes I taught were certainly full of information that would be necessary for a professional musician, but that didn't mean that any of it seemed relevant to students who just wanted to practice. You may sympathize with that feeling, if you've taken theory courses with the idea that these courses would help your harp playing significantly. Please understand - I know with every fiber of my being that music theory makes you a better musician and can absolutely be of benefit to your playing. But unfortunately, I have found that most of the time, harpists take theory courses and are left wondering what use they can make of all this hard-won knowledge. These courses don't come with a hands-on way to apply this knowledge at the harp, a way to make it really useful. That's what I will share with you today, some common sense ways to make theory practical. Shel Silverstein wrote a beautiful and supremely short poem that perfectly fits today's topic. The poem is called “Woulda-Coulda-Shoulda,” and in just seven short lines, Silverstein sums up the ultimate way to prevent regret. He tells us that all those woulda-coulda-shouldas vanish with one little “did.” Doing beats wishing every day. So if we were sitting in the same room together, sharing a cup of tea, and you asked me what I thought your next piece should be, I'd have to ask you a question right back, “What do you think you want to do?” Life is filled with “shoulds” and “have tos;” our music doesn't need to be. Our music is personal to us. The music we play, our repertoire, is something that reflects what we like and who we are. It is a personal expression at every playing level. Your personal musical expression starts from the very first day you are capable of playing a melody on the harp. Your music is in you and your music is you. So if you need to choose your next piece to learn, it should be something you want to learn. Back to our conversation at the tea table. When I ask you what piece you'd like to do, you are probably going to tell me you don't know. So we'll dig a little deeper. If you are thinking that there is a skill you need to develop and you're looking for a piece that will help you do that, that's great. I can suggest half a dozen pieces that will help you with that specific skill. But have you considered trying a sort of piece you've never done before? Or what about that bucket list piece that you aren't sure if you're ready for? This is the problem; there are too many choices. There is simply too much music in the world, and it's impossible to play everything we want to. So we need to choose. And what if you chose to make your next piece one that created a “did,” filled a want, or prevented a future regret. That's what I want to help you with today. I want to give you a little system to help you choose. I also decided to take a sort of light-hearted, fun approach to this topic, so since today is the fifth of May, I've created five possible categories to choose from in honor of Cinco de Mayo. After all, we can't take ourselves too seriously! Fact number one: Your focus is in your control.Fact number two: Your focus is a critical factor in your success and harp happiness. Conclusion: What you focus on matters… a lot. In the last episode of the podcast, we were talking about focus in terms of placing your chords. I cited one of my favorite Zig Ziglar quotes, “You hit what you aim at.” I'm going to put a different spin on that today. We aren't going to talk about focusing on a goal exactly. We're going to discuss how to shift your focus to get you beyond a sticking point or a challenge. Here's my idea in a nutshell: when we focus on the hard thing, we lose perspective on why we are doing the hard thing to begin with. That can cost us a lot in terms of time, energy and enjoyment. Consider some of the things we focus on that can leave us with a feeling of letdown or even loss. We spend weeks preparing for Christmas, only to realize on December 26th that we didn't really remember to enjoy the day. Or we put days of effort into making a special meal - Thanksgiving dinner comes to my mind - and everyone is finished their meal and watching the football game almost before we've sat down to our own plate. Or we prepare so much for a special performance that we don't know what to practice the day after it's over. What about the things we focus on when we're practicing or performing? Are we focusing on the things that will help us grow and move us forward? Or are we only concentrating on the difficulties that are in front of us, whether those are wrong notes or stumbles or performance nerves? I believe that often we are looking through a microscope at too many of those moments, when we really should be using binoculars to see what lies ahead, beyond the hard part. Instead of going into the rabbit hole where our perceptions are distorted (that wrong note really doesn't matter that much!), we need a healthier perspective on what we're actually trying to do, so that we can get past the sticking point and get back to loving the music. The great Zig Ziglar, much-beloved author and motivational speaker, never played the harp as far as I know, but one of his most often quoted remarks is perfect for today's topic. Zig said, “You hit what you aim at, and if you aim at nothing you will hit it every time.” If you have ever had difficulty placing the notes in your chords, today I am going to teach you how to fix your aim. Of course there is more to placing and playing chords than just aiming at the strings, but you do have to get to the right ones. This is what makes three-note chords more difficult than two-note intervals, and what makes four-note chords even more challenging. And then there are those four-note chords in both hands at the same time! The more fingers you have to put on the strings, the more possibility there is for error, which is why we're going to take our time today and really explore what you need to know as well as what you need to do to increase your chances for success. Naturally, none of us gets every note right every time, but when we can read the notes faster and place our fingers more automatically, even the biggest chords are less daunting. By the way, the techniques we will be talking about work for placing arpeggios too, so it's a double win today! This episode took us a year to make... Well, at least it is the byproduct of a year focused on focus and rest for Bruce. If you read between the lines of Meditations Book 9 you'll find an emperor who also shares an obsession with finding ways to increase his focus and find rest. For instance Marcus says things like: "You can remove out of the way many useless things among those which disturb thee, for they lie entirely in thy opinion"Or "Let there be freedom from perturbation with things which come from the external cause and let there be justice done by virtue of the internal cause that is, let there be movement and action terminating in this, in social acts."In this episode we explore practical ways we can sharpen our focus and deepen our rest.
In our hyper-connected world, digital distractions can prevent us from hearing God's voice and lead to spiritual exhaustion. Drawing parallels from Moses' experience with burnout, we learn the importance of delegation and creating boundaries. By implementing practical steps like scheduled digital check-ins and dedicated prayer times, we can better manage our modern responsibilities while maintaining spiritual health. The key is creating intentional space for connecting with God, free from the constant pull of notifications and digital demands.

What do you do when your energy is low? What do you do when you lose focus? Well, most people just push harder and deplete themselves. There's a smarter way. In today's episode Satori will share his secrets to boost energy and get you aligned with your values. Let's get into the episode... Good morning, good afternoon, good evening wherever you are in the world and whenever you’re listening. It’s time for a brand NEW episode of halfass to badass. As an entrepreneur with a lot of moving parts, it’s easy to lose focus on what is important (there are tons of distractions looking for your attention) and sometimes it could be tough to maintain energy throughout the day. A lot of our clients that come to us, they want to be productive, they want to make more money and achieve more but struggle to keep the energy alive, they lose focus and build up a lot of stress and frustration. Many times they are very overwhelmed. Obviously this is very draining and taxing on their bodies and their minds. So in today’s episode I want to give you some simple, but effective and doable activities or actions you can do daily to boost energy and focus and watch your productivity and efficiency Sky rocket. Here are my 5 hacks to boost your energy and sharpen your focus. WATER Water is the best solvent to eliminate toxins, alkalize and remove inflammation from your body. I nourish my body and my brain. Anytime I feel my brain being tired or I experience some kind of brain fog, I drink water. How much water should you drink? Lots of people have different ideas around this and some even think you can overhydrate. For most people that will never happen. Of course it may differ depending on body weight, if you move a lot and which climate you’re in. But I have two simple rules you can adopt if you want. I drink half a liter (16 ounces) first thing in the morning. No matter what. That’s how I start my day. After that I do one of two things or a combo. Anytime I pee I drink a glass of water. Empty one way fill up another way. Or I drink water in combo with my time blocks. I’ll tell you more about that in a moment. If I sit and work for 50 minutes, then after that I get up drink some water. I don’t drink water after 7 or 8 pm depending of when I go to bed so that I don’t disturb my sleep I use my breath for relaxation But I also use it as a way to balance my nervous system. When we feel stressed or worried or overwhelmed we tense up, so by actively and intentionally breathing we start to balance our nervous system. Think about about it, you body gets tense automatically (unconsciously) you don’t have to think about it. But to relax you have to be intentional. BREATHING I do some stretching in the morning. I take walks in the morning and stack the breathing to it so I multiply the effect. Meaning intentional breath and walk together. MOVEMENT I was never a coffee drinker. Actually I was very against it for years because it is very acidic. I still believe coffee isn’t good for you. I used to work hard to get people to stop drinking coffee. But then I discovered a new way to drink it that has brain performance benefits and I made a new decision. I still believe you need to get quality coffee because a lot of coffee has mold. So here’s what I do differently. I brew coffee in a french press, I pour the coffee in a blender, add some organic grass fed butter, I add some kardemumma (for taste and because it is an anti-inflammatory spice) and mix it for 20 seconds. Then it’s ready. I do add cinnamon on top. Then it’s ready to drink. Why butter? Because the fat fuels your brain. So instead of having my brain get energy from sugar my brain is turned on by fat. Much more effective and keeps me balanced throughout the day. BUTTER COFFEE I connect to things that matter that inspire me. We all have things we value more and things we value less. I focus on filling my day with things that inspire me, fill me with energy and aligned with my values because that will make me not only productive but it will keep me fully charged throughout the day. This is also where the time blocking comes in which I mentioned earlier. I block 50 min for my most important activities. I have a timer on so I can focus on the task and not have to think about anything else at that time. Then when the timer goes off I do all of what I shared with you. I drink water, I breathe, I stretch, walk or do something to move and connect to the next inspiring thing I want to accomplish. CONNECTING TO WHAT INSPIRES ME Take what you’ve learned today and implement it in your day, your week, your month and watch your energy, productivity and inspiration grow massively. We can all have excuses or reasons why not to do something, but this isn’t one of those. You may have your habits in place, but if you add this into your routine you’ll be happy you did. If you’re focused this won’t take more than 2-3 minutes inside of your time blocks. I’ve got a lot of NEW and exciting episodes coming up so make sure you subscribe if you haven’t that yet, and share this podcast with people you care about.

Hey you amazing women of God! I know...you’ve already heard a ton about narrowing down your niche, right? But if you’re like most of my clients and students, you either feel like: Your niche is narrowed down enough and don’t really understand how to do it better or You don’t want to niche down any more at all. I get that. Really. I used to think this was all a bunch of fluff and just wanted to reach as many people as possible (because I thought it would be more profitable). Have you felt that way, too? But not wanting to niche down is really a false belief and not a great business idea. Guys, we can't market to a whole bunch of different people all at once. The more specific and narrow our niche, the easier it is to market our offer. Sharpen your focus, fire up your sales. To make more sales, you have to market to one specific person. #truth As I worked with my Focus Accelerator students through this same challenge, I wanted to share my process of niching down with you, too! The process is actually a lot of fun. Jump into today’s podcast and get ready for massive clarity. If you're struggling with sales, this is the place to start. A confused mind never buys, but also a confused mind never sells. It's easy to love what you do and wake up every day with a passion when you serve the people you’re called to serve. I truly love the women I get to serve and I’m so thankful for them! You can feel the same in your business, too. So grab a pen & notepad or open up a fresh Google Doc and let’s get started!
